Im curious what close air support to ground troops can the F35 deliver.

    • @robman2095
      @robman2095 4 года назад +2

Well it was supposed to be taking over from the A10 when the USAF wanted to scrap them, except nobody really believed it And the A10s got a reprieve. So it must have some capabilities for ground support. But it would have to be in beast mode I think and I seem to recall that the gun has very little ammunition on board. Maybe there’s some sort of external pod that can help with that. I also don’t think you’d want to get that thing too close to the ground with people taking potshots with their manpads. You don’t need an aircraft that costs this much to do effective ground support And it’s main strengths of course Are to do with sensor fusion, networking, stealth and radar that allows it to shoot the enemy Before the enemy even sees them. So using them for ground support seems to me to be taking unnecessary risks with them, but I guess they will be used in that role at some stage by the RAAF.

@@robman2095 do we only have that many people?? That sucks

    • @robman2095
      @robman2095 4 года назад +2

@@thangchano no I was exaggerating a bit. We could man at least two Nimitz class carriers and still have a few people in Canberra to do the paperwork but we would have to decommission all of our ships to do it. That would be a problem as Nimitz carrier needs a whole task force around it to protect it and we wouldn’t have any ships or people left to do that. But to be serious for a minute, the cost of running a Nimitz class carrier would really be prohibitive for an economy the size of Australia. We would have better ways of spending the money, like not shutting down the rest of our Navy to do it. The best we can hope for is maybe one day putting a few F 35Bs on a modified Adelaide class ship if we want to project some air power away from our own shores

Joseph McDermott I'm not sure where you are getting your info on the F35A, but your cost per aircraft is way off!! The current cost for the A version is 94 Million not 236 Million. Where did you get a figure like that??? Also I could not find any information on Norway buying F18 aircraft. You also mention F35 being beaten by F18 in dogfights. Please supply the site, video, etc., of any dogfight between these two planes (other than in Operation Red Flag) where the F18 has won a Dogfight?? Please supply info from a reliable source not some supposition or fake made up site.

      FALSE,
      From www.airforce.gov.au/Technology/Future-Acquisitions/F-35A-Lightning-II/?RAAF-ZRnYQhJUh1u0e44uR32olOT1rt+Ym4K3
"The first F-35 aircraft will arrive in Australia in 2018 and the first squadron, Number 3 Squadron, will be operational in 2021. All 72 aircraft are expected to be fully operational by 2023"
"The total capital cost of $12.4 billion for this acquisition includes the cost of associated facilities, weapons and training."
"Around $1.6 billion in new facilities and infrastructure will be constructed, including at RAAF Base Williamtown in New South Wales and RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory."
      ----
Australia is upgrading it's air bases together with F-35s. Some JSF countries wouldn't be bothered with airbase upgrades.
Minus the airbase upgrades, its $150 million AUD or $131 million USD for each F-35A which includes the cost of weapons and training. Australian Dollar is slightly weaker than US Dollar.
Minus $1.6 billion AUD base upgrades ,
$150 million AUD = *$114 million* USD per unit (18/03/2015)
F-35A's R&D cost will be soaked up the US tax payer (larger economic strength)

since the last update all the knockers pretty much shut up and ran away.
the software now allows it to pull 9G+ with a full internal weapons load (I believe). it accelerates far better than anyone realised and is far more agile than the early software allowed (prior software for example only allowed ~7G).
its radar and avionics are outstanding etc.
I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's pretty damn good - especially if you're in an aircraft lacking the sensor and radar tech that the f-35 has.
in that case you're just dead.
search for the 2018 RIAT F-35 display and you'll see what I mean about it's agility.
and that isn't the end of it.
it is still computer limited until they finish research and testing etc - the airframe is technically capable of pulling enough G forces to rip itself apart, so there is still room for more turning performance etc in future upgrades perhaps.

I wonder how long the RAAF channel will allow this comment to stay up: The F-35A is a grossly overpriced and overhyped, fragile, poorly performing aircraft that cannot supercruise, with a tiny payload and major structural flaws such as trans-sonic buffeting and overheating elevator edges. Its showcase capability, namely the detection, identification and engagement of targets far beyond visual range is dubious. It will operate on visual engagement rules, because its systems are prone to false positives and duplicates. Its real price is way more than the quoted one. It relies on mission data that takes hours to load and can only be produced in the US - which means that the US has an effective veto over any mission. Even if the US approves, the undersea cables that are the only secure method of passing the data will come under immediate enemy attack in the event of a real war. Its availability rate remains at 50% overall, which is of course completely unacceptable. Eighteen years after it first flew, twelve years after going into full production, it is still not rated combat-ready by the USAF, with a list of over 150 potentially deadly problems. We take this dodo on at our peril.

      Bullshit.
Year 2013's transonic buffeting is not major issue for F-35A Block 3F.
Year 2013's overheating elevator edges are been fixed for F-35A Block 3F.

The trans-sonic buffeting was not fixed, the performance specs were downgraded. It now accelerates more slowly through the sound barrier. This is a bug, not a feature. The elevator leading edges were still a problem on fast low passes as of 2017, and there is no sign of a fix. The air bases would not need "upgrades" on this scale - mainly, building the clean covered maintenance facilities this prima donna must have - if we hadn't bought it. Your projected dates for operational readiness are a wish and a hope in a program that has never met a deadline yet. The same goes for its cost. The cost estimates given to the 2016 Senate enquiry were $A90 million per aircraft, which everybody knew was a lie. Now you say $A150 million each. I'll believe it when I see it, and at that it's too damn expensive for what it can actually do.
The rest of what I said stands unchallenged. It's a maintenance hog with an availability rate of around 50%, according to the latest DOT&E report. It still has a list of over 150 potentially disastrous flaws. It requires hours of downloads before and after every mission, and it can't be scrambled. Its weapons load only allows one strike per mission, or drop stealth. And one bogey, after which it has to run. If it opens its weapons bay, it drops stealth anyway. The data it must have to fly any mission can only be coded in the US - IF the US approves - and sent by undersea cable.
It'll never be used in anger, most likely. That's the only comfort in this sorry saga. It'll only be a complete waste of money. Better that than lives. All the same, it's my money.

puffin51, That's FALSE with trans-sonic buffeting argument since you misapplied F-35C's trans-sonic problem for F-35A.
The downgraded specs was with Block 2A era with 4.5G for F-35A in 2012.
The leaked year 2015 F-35A AF-02 vs F-16D incident has resulted this F-35A AF-02 unit reaching 6.5G turn! This is before F-35 Block 2B/3I's 7G

Please re-post 2017 DOD report from US gov link. I already have the web link.
"The elevator leading edges were still a problem on fast low passes as of 2017" is false. Quote it. Hint: it has nothing to do with "elevator leading edges".
F-35 has all moving horizontal stabilizer.
Under DOD YF17's "F-35A Flight Science", there's no mention on "Excessive heating on the horizontal tail surfaces" like F-35B's problem.
It's only under "F-35B Flight Sciences" has "Excessive heating on the horizontal tail surfaces"
      DOD FY17 talks about 9G F-35A Block 3F which is distant from 2012's F-35A 4.5G.
      F-35B and F-35C lagging behind F-35A Block 3F status.
DOD FY17 expects F-35A Block 3F software to be installed on Lot 9 late 2017, hence DOD FY17 is missing a few months from year 2017.
      I'll take you on.
      Try again.

My notifications tells me that Rnl Valen has responded, but I do not see his post here, and I assume there's been some sort of YT stuff-up. From his first few lines, he denies that there has been a trans sonic buffeting problem in the F-35A - only in the C. I think he's wrong about that, and all versions of the aircraft had to have their performance downgraded - but that's relatively minor. What about its availability rates? What about its download/upload times? What about its small payloads consistent with stealth? Because one thing's for sure: if it's caught on the ground being serviced or downloading, its questionable performance in the air won't matter in the slightest.

You're mistaking actual cost for flyaway cost. The F-35A costs less than 90 million a piece, but it'll cost more if you consider all of the attached infrastructure and additional costs. Basically no one just buys aircraft without tools, weapons, simulators and so on. You can look at any aircraft and make the same claim about it being too expensive if you add all of the costs, but that's just dumb. If you compare the F-35A to other aircraft, using comparable numbers, it's simply a much better bargain.
Availability rates were low because early production aircraft were accounted for in the numbers. Those had extremely low availability rates, while newer ones (talking about last year's numbers) were above 90%. Yet again, you're looking at numbers without really understanding what they mean.
The F-35 can very well be scrambled. Again, it's a continuous improvement process and you can't just make assumptions from early production models or practices.
Here you're making a really idiotic comparison. The F-35 can either carry a rather small weapons load for stealth missions, which no alternative can do in the first place, or abandon some of the stealth to do a full load mission. In the second case, it's still stealthier than any alternative aircraft, which means it still holds an advantage. So basically you're claiming the F-35 isn't good because it's limited in doing something that other aircraft can't even do in the first place.
Weapons bays aren't open for long, they're open for a few seconds then go back to normal.
You're really digging for issues to the point where most of them are just utterly wrong and based on misunderstandings. This is why you don't listen to idiots like Pierre Sprey and Carlo Kopp.

The RAAF Waste money on the F-35 While the Navy Waste money on a stupid diesel submarine. "New tech" when you place orders for the F-35 16 years from when you get the first 2, while other countries are building better aircraft just shows how far behind we as a nation are in our military equipment. If you are going to spend $125 mil a pop you could have spent an extra $25 mil and got a decent aircraft such as the F-22 Raptor.

Yes defence is very expensive in both dollars and blood. You are enjoying security now that was bought by others. The biggest problem with modern defence systems is that they have 10 to 20 year leadtimes, so if you wait for a threat before you decide to do something about defending yourself it is already too late. So maybe you should stick to climate change and let the defence experts work on keeping you safe.
