F-16 "Passionate Patsy" P-47 paint scheme time lapse

- Luke AFB aircraft structural maintainers apply a paint scheme paying homage to the 310th Fighter Squadron's 80 years of continued service. The paint scheme takes after that of the "Passionate Patsy" P-47 Thunderbolt flown during WWII.
This was the very first livery we were tasked with painting for the 56th Fighter Wing. Prior to this, our crew, made up of a lot of first time painters, only had experience painting single and two toned gray aircraft. There were a lot of headaches, setbacks, and errors we worked through. Although it's not as flashy as some other liveries, we were proud once it left the hangar. After this was painted, we were tasked with two more custom paintjobs that we had designed and received higher command approval for. You can find these liveries on Google if you type in "F-16 MiG Killer" and "F-16 Wild Duck".
• WWII ‘ Passionate Pats...
As with all professional paint jobs, whether it's a house, car, mural or F-16, the actual "painting" is the fun part and just a tiny bit of the entire process. Amazing.
Yeah, I was about to say the same. The man hours needed for sanding, filling, masking and decalling are insane! The painting part itself is the quickest thing in the entire process :)
No doubt.
It takes a long time, sometimes weeks to prep a vehicle for that special paint job, even if it’s one solid color.
I’ve had my share of painting a lot of vehicles, and gotten a lot of tips from other painters along the way.
Some were very challenging.
I still have photos of a lot of them.
@@dangeary2134 What vehicles did you paint? Planes?
I "only" painted cars and it's a hell of a job. A plane must be that times 20.
@@marcusaureliusantoninusaug2161 I restored and painted several classic cars, and countless street cars. Did a few custom jobs, too.
Semi trucks are also in that mix, as well as quite a few steel buildings, and more than a few speciality epoxy finish jobs for industrial use.
I have a couple questions for you.
Do you think that these guys were just born with their skills?
You must think that, otherwise you wouldn’t me knocking me or anyone else in the nuts about someone you don’t know, and have never met, or even seen his work.
Next question:
How long have you been a jealous narcissist?
Either you have never painted a car, or you have, and you think you are so special that nobody else can do it correctly except for you.
Could I paint an aircraft?
No doubt in my mind whatsoever.
I already know what goes into it.
I also have no doubt that I could do it solo, but it would take time to do it right.
You would do well to learn the difference between someone that is blowing amok and someone who is confident in his abilities.
That dinky little F16 would be a piece of cake compared to some of the things I’ve done.
For one thing, it’s not full of dents….
People complaining about how the F-16 is the "wrong plane" for a P-47 tribute: when the 310th Fighter Squadron became operational exactly 80 years ago, they were equipped with P-47's.
Yeah too many people acting like their opinion is the 'correct' one. What you said is correct. To the ones thinking the color scheme looks 'wrong' the P-47s came in multiple color schemes too. This is only 'wrong' because you aren't used to it.
Gabby Gabreski approves!
that makes sense then. but otherwise, I would equate the F-16 with the P-51. Even down to the ventral air scoop. How great would an F-16 look dressed up as "Big Beautiful Doll"?
I can't help but wonder what modern fighter jet would be "appropriate" in their minds.
@@MatthewvMayo most likely the A-10 Thunderbolt II, since the aircraft is named after the P-47 Thunderbolt.

You can find these liveries on Google if you type in "F-16 MiG Killer" and "F-16 Wild Duck". Out of the three, most people enjoy the Wild Duck livery as it's the flashiest and was arguably the most fun to paint. The MiG Killer livery is a throwback to an experimental paint job tested during the Gulf War. The jet was also the first American F-16 to shoot down a MiG.

I noticed the flat green portion go past the cockpit and thought this was a 'take' on the original livery but the idea is to replicate it.
I was the Shop Chief there in the 80's and early 90's. Good to see they finally installed the inserts. We complained for years about the paint fumes getting into the offices
While I do like the "Wild Duck" paint scheme, the "MIG-Killer" looks much better in my opinion. Either way, the team did a fantastic job!!
Cool stuff! How many days/hours are we looking at here? Looks amazing.
@@mallard206 roughly 9 days, about 8 hours a day.
After watching tons of model building videos recently, it’s funny to see the painters being smaller than what they are painting.
And they can get away with whatever color they use lol
Spent several years in the 310th. That was a good flying airplane. Love the paint job!
That is pretty frickin' cool. I just love how they pay homage to their heritage, never forgetting those that came before them.
Awesome job guy!!!
So I guess a wrap would just peel off at super sonic speeds......
For some reason, this video reminds me of a time some 40 years ago when I spilled a large can of paint stripper on the left wing of an A-7D I was working on. The paint stripper worked really well.
Looks great. Very nice tribute. I think the F16 is one of the best looking fighter designs ever!
30years USAF and ANG (retired) on T-38's, F4-D's and F-16's mainly as a crewchief and I could almost smell the Solvents and Paint being put down while watching this video, it looks totally awesome ! Congratulations !
How often is an aircraft repainted in normal ops?
@@DaylightRobberyCA Wow that is a great question. From what I remember it really depends, not sure what the regulations say today on how often (I didn't work in sheetmetal shop/corrosion control) but seems like it is often 3 years or 4 years between paint for most of our F-4's and F-16 aircraft from what I remember. The Commanders aircraft will likely be painted the most often (every year or two years based on how it looks). It takes some days to do a repaint even on a small F-16 like in this video because a lot of the old paint and primer is usually sanded down to near metal before repainting because repeated repainting over old paint can make an aircraft gain weight.
@@Bowhunters6go8xz6x thanks! Yeah, I figured the old paint would have to be removed for weight constraints
For those not in the know, the Commanders jet is repainted more often because they fly them to Wing/Group staff meetings. It's like making sure your Ferrari is perfect before driving to the golf and country club for a match/event. Everyone's ride will be judged for scrapes, smears and imperfections.@@Bowhunters6go8xz6x
@@DaylightRobberyCA Take in mind that It has been 27 years since I retired from the Air Force where I used to do this kind of work. Things I'm sure have changed. The life cycle of a repaint is suppose to be three years.. But that depends on the location of each plane, how it's stored and how often it flies. Bases like Kunsan AB in Korea fly quite often. Those mostly got a field touch-up. Where as training bases might fly less hours. At Luke AFB where this video was filmed might have a repaint every 15 months prior to the installation of flight line aircraft covers. The sun will bake the you know what out of a paint job. And lets not forget about the ones that just needed to be pretty just because who flies them, Wing and Squadron Commanders get pretty from their boarding ladders right down to their wheels.
This is eye opener! I've never seen paintjob on a military plane before. Im only an enthusiastic warplane builder so this is absolutely grand full scale!!!
Excellent idea and finished product. Lately I have been seeing a few brand new Peterbilts and Kenworths come off the assembly line with throw back paint schemes from the 60's 70's and the 80's. I like it.
With a name like Passionate Patsy, that finish was no where near what I was expecting.
ASM 2A7X3. I did corrosion control on the F-15E airframe and got to help paint a famous legacy model at our base. Definitely a cool job
Not so much about the type of plane but a tribute to the 310th Fighter Squadron. Very cool I think. Great job and kudos.
Thanks for all the work! Painting USA War Birds is a great tradition!
Haven't seen ole 768 in awhile! Looking good.
I used to help 'prep' Sea King coastguard choppers years ago.
That feeling of sitting on deckchairs watching the sun rise over the airfield whilst off your tits on thinners and drinking MaxPax coffee will stay with me forever
I was lucky (and surprised) to see Patsy in person at March AFB's open house, absolutely beautiful livery!
The tail paint changes the normal perspective of the plane. It has a lawn dart (Jarts) feel.
Might have been cool to have shown the P47 in its version of the scheme for comparison.
Very comforting to see that craftsmen are still present for duty in the USAF, salute!
That one guy needs a raise! He is doing a lot of the prep work.
Airframers having way too much fun :) Sweet livery folks!!
This is just the right homage to the great P-47, a dream airplane,a legendary warbird as is the F-16.Lots of respect!!
Stavros in Florida caught your video and enjoyed it thank you. Wow what a beautiful, slick paint scheme.
I love custom and unique plane paint jobs. Gives them so much personality.
the F-16 is definitely the most beautiful of the fighter jets there is. and they have been around for quite some time.
That’s awesome. As a civilian I had the good fortune to get to fly the F16 Falcon. It was amazing. I was awarded a 9g pin and certificate. I had a great video of the flight I took with my compact super C vhs, and left it in my VHS tape player so the next day my wife turned it into a soap opera. She’s my ex wife!
Everyone has their onw favorites for their own reasons, but i think we can all agree the F-16 is one sleek looking bird for how old it is, and that paint job looks amazing.
While working civil service at Hill AFB, I got to inspect paint jobs on different acft. My favorite scheme was the F-16s for the guys up in Alaska, They were white , gray and black. Quite a contrasting color palette.
Wicked job. Fun practice and motivational task.....get the guys to each paint one of the desks in the hangar/office. They get to express themselves and hone their capabilities.
What a great tribute to the WW2 generation.
I love it and couldn’t care less what other think.
We need to see more modern fighters painted in tribute liveries to the old heroes of wars gone by.
My wife was in the navy, i used to take her up to Nas jax every morning when she wasnt deployed, anyway there was a large hangar and from time to time it was open. They fit a handful of what looked like f-18s to me into it for painting but they were mostly disassembled.
SO MUCH WORK - and it turned out GREAT! I was stationed at Luke from Jan 81 through March 83 and I don't think any aircraft based there had a special livery. While the F-4s, F-15s, F-16s, and F-104s looked superb in their "normal clothes", it would have been wonderful to have at least one of each in a special livery. We did have a private company flying F-86s to tow darts out over the desert for air-to-air training and they looked good with all white with a small blue pinstripe - if I remember correctly. Similar to a NASA paint scheme.
Was with the 314th, been in that booth many a time. Press on with pride airmen!
Fantastic work, just Beautiful !!! 👍 Semper Fi
I like it's cool obviously a boat load of work. Congrats 😊
Now that is a lot of hard work!!! Imagine having the job of "customizing" an F-16!
i love newer aircraft with older (ww1, ww2, korea, vietnam, etc.) era liveries
they look so badass and are very creative
i painted F16s at HAFB in the 90s.. block 40 and block 50.. curious why the green was sprayed then sanded and then sprayed again.. im guessing it didnt flash out properly.
Yup. Issues with paint required a redo of the green.
My Son flew that jet last weekend. He just sent me the pictures!
Personally I think she looks stunning
Impressive job! Well done!
Rusty’s Prime and Paint, Main and 5th. Two guys, two days. Satisfaction guaranteed.
Earl Scheib, home of the $199 paint job.
I want to see one painted with like, Candyapple Red with absurd metal flake, Grabber Green, Plum-Crazy Purple, a bunch of ghost flames- just some kind of insane automotive-style paint job.
Seeing fighters in a throwback paint scheme is cool, but cant we get a bomber in a reto scheme for once? Imagine a BUFF or a Bone in a WWII scheme. Green over grey with a big red tail. I guess i can only dream.
The weight of that much paint has to be deducted from the payload capability.
Wow, I think those P-47 stripes and lines look great on an F-16 . I've not heard about this tribute - I approve
Looks fantastic 👍
Loud and Proud well done.
Wow that looks so good.
goddamn thats a nostalgic scheme brother
This is so cool. Wish all our aircraft were painted up like this, not all just shades of grey. Thanks for sharing!
Nice job, Paint Barn!!
somehow that just doesn't look like the original... and its not the shape of the f-16 vs the scheme, its the proportions of everything. Like the black stripes are way too big and too far apart.. the red strips on the tail should be smaller and there are not enough of them, but... nice try though..
Decision by committee...
very cool. looking forward to seeing this Viper in the sky.
Looks like they pulled this out of a cartoon, looks cool as hell!
Wow, that is absolutely beautiful. A lot of hard work put into that one.
Gray on gray. Cool.
Seems like a lot of work, materials, etc. to commemorate another aircraft. I like it though. The F-16 is such a beautiful plane.
Every squadron should paint several aircraft in its historic paint schemes.
An A-10 would be a better canvas for a P-47 tribute.
Just what I thought too.
I agree. This is a valiant effort. But to me, the F-16 - with its bubble canopy, vertical stabilizer shape, and belly scoop - is more evocative of the P-51 Mustang.
The 310th was a viper squadron at the time they honored the history of Passionate Patsy P47.
Incorrect. THis squadron was formed with P-47s and this scheme is a tribute to that time. Has nothing to do with A-10 as it's not a Thunderbolt tribute but a squadron tribute.
WRONG. The A10 dosent deserve the thundebolt title. The P47 was top of the line mid war tech. Its performance and role were more like the F15. The A10 is only durable no other aspect of it is similar to the P47
That is sick!👍
This Viper has nine different colors in its Heritage Scheme, and that's the most that I've seen on one airframe.
Great paint job EXCEPT . . . it needs the original nose art to be truly complete. If only we hadn't gone too PC.
Thats awesome, there was a P-47 that is shown in several
WW2 documentaries called
Hun Hunter, that was a very cool paint job too!!
Ive torn that jet apart and put it back together multiple times. 310th tophats baby
That looks absolutely amazing
boy those fellas were FAST, I hope they weren't hopped up on drugs!
Warts and all recording of the task. Good job! I couldn't help but think of the 'invasion stripes' from WW2 and the 24 hours that the crews had to paint them onto every allied aircraft, big or small.
It looks bad ass nice job.
Looks cool. It’s always hard doing an out of the ordinary paint job on these jets. I noticed a few redo’s in the time lapse and I felt the pain of Amn lol.. getting after it, only to have to remask, sand, wipe, mix paint and respray after you cleaned your paint gun out lol. Aggressor camo paint jobs were my favorite, thunderbirds were my least.. too many stencil placements.
I love this.
That was sweet
Excellent..
The armed forces should really bring this kind of stuff back, because it looks awesome! Except for maybe the stealth fighters, as they rely on special coatings to evade radar.
It's always cool to see the throwback paint schemes. However, if I have any say in this I'd have done an A-10 over the F-16. The F-16 plays more of the P-51 role.
Looks awesome!
looks awesome! great work.
I can appreciate the effort, as it's not an easy job. That said, I'm not at all fond of WW2 paintschemes on modern aircraft. It just looks off.
I think it looks awful. Glad it's not just me.
Thank God you two are in the extreme minority.@@davewalkden7248
Cool video!
Holy crap I thought this was the paint barn at Cannon AFB until I saw how small it actually was, we could paint 3 jets at once if we really wanted to. Crazy y'all don't have it on jacks with the doors closed before sanding. also different not seeing forced air respirators, those things are a blessing when the barn heat is set at 115°. Must of been like pulling teeth to get the scheme approved...it took years to approve an updated tail flash for use at Cannon when we updated all 4 squadrons. Never did get the incentive flight I was promised for that but ended up getting one years later for some random BS.
Gabby Gabreski approves!
Very cool. That’s a lot of work.
That man lift near the tail looks like it's got a slow leak. Appeared to drop down as they worked elsewhere. Around @2:00
why didn't you show the plane the paint scheme was based on? it would have been interesting to see a comparison.
At first I thought that was zinc chromate primer on the top!😯
How sick is that🇺🇸🇺🇸🔥🔥
What a great video! I have two questions 1) any idea why the top was painted green twice? Was there a mistake? And 2) what was the actual, total elapsed time?
Good questions. I think some form of mistake had to have been made with the green on the first attempt. The time had to have been in the several hours if not days.
The green cured incorrectly and had to be removed and reaccomplished . The entire paint job was 9-10 days including all the cure times between coats and layouts.
@@michaelcichonsky8714 Thanks!
Such a beautiful airframe.
You forgot to show the part when MX control walks up to you and asks can we fly this bird in 2 days when you just started sanding
What happened to the red stripes on the tail in the last shot? It looked like they used the wrong color green the first time they sprayed since they took it all off. I'm sorry to say that the F-16 looks nothing like a Jug and the paint scheme doesn't work on it. Kudos to the men who did the work but it was the wrong plane.
This is an F16 with the 310th fighter squadron out of Luke Airforce base.
It wasvpainted this way to honor the 310ths 80th year of service.
Guess which plane the 310th flew when it was formed.
That's right, the P47. "passionate patsy" was 2 different P47s Flown (I belive) in both theaters, by the same pilot with the 310th - in the pacific she was a razorback with a mainly olive color scheme (same cowl art) and no invasion stripes. In Europe, she'd have sported invasion stripes, and was mainly unpainted aluminum with olive accents.
It might be possible that there are no color photos or models of any of the other P47s of that squadron from that era. And likely many/most of the surviving veterans of that squadron from WW2 have passed away, so asking a 310th member for help recreating HIS old 0lane would impossible.
The air force may have kibboshed the pacific scheme (without the obtrusive I stripes) for some reason.
Can’t say I like it, but awesome job!
So cool, love it!
Id like one please? But can you also stencil BAD-ASS near the canopy? 😅
Those guys work fast
Excellent!!
Looks really cool! I’m just missing some kind of nose art….
Beautiful, a lot of work
Hey, looks great and I want to paint my F16 1/5 to the Passionate patsy. Do you know the Paint codes? That I can get the correct colors. That’s would be great!
So nice to see the Fighting Falcon emblem on there instead of all this viper shit now.
