I have a Motorola (Android) phone that I use primarily as an MP3 music player. On my old iMac, I could just connect with a USB-cable and transfer between my Motorola and iMac to transfer music; but when I bought a new iMac, the iMac would not recognize my Motorola. I downloaded the Android File Transfer app, but Apple won''t allow me to open and use the app because it wasn't downloaded from the Apple App Store. The only Android file transfer apps on the Apple App Store require $$$ (yearly subscription). Your tutorial on how to use an external drive to move files from an iMac to Android is the only "free" solution that worked for me. My Motorola didn't have the same appearance as your Android phone when transferring files so there was a "trial-and-error" learning curve to figure how to do the transfer. So far, so good! THANKS!!!

Open MTP didn't work for me either, on my Samsung s23 with my M2 Mac (the same connection error than most people). But luckily, the external drive solution worked like a charm.

okay i did everything you said for open MTP, and it seemed to "work", but where do I find my files now on my computer? i transferred videos recorded on my google phone that I need raw files of to edit in Premier on my mac, but I cant find them anywhere in my computer files (outside of the mtp application..) Am I missing something? did they actually transfer? Im confused.. plz help!
I used the Snapdrop but for some reason I don't know where it downloaded it to? Is it defaulted to the "Downloads" folder? Because I don't see it. But when I do the reverse and send a file from my MAC to my Android, it works.
I have a NAS server (Qnap) connected to my Mac mini M1. It has a usb-A connection. When I connect my android phone to the NAS with a USB cable and put the phone in transfer mode I can use the finder on my mac as normal to transfer files both ways. Or just browse through files on the phone.

It would take FOREVER to select them all individually. In OpenMPT, using shift + click doesn't work for selecting the second end of a group, like it does everywhere else. Apple M3 max is not allowing the Open MTP to be installed as it is not verified !
Finder -> Applications -> Right click on Open MTP App and chose open

Solution:
Go to "Applications" in Finder => Hold Command button and right click over the app icon => Click open
Right-click the application and select Open. A different prompt should appear, select the open option again.

Try to activate the debogging mode on your smartphone maybe... But here, it works for 4-5 files and after crash... And never worked again 😢
