I can't answer "why" questions, of course. I don't work for Apple. It’s so weird and I can’t understand why Apple does this, like if you plug-in an android phone into your MacBook, you can drag and drop files back-and-forth but if you plug in your own iPhone, you can’t drag and drop files anywhere you want you’re limited to a few apps that allow the file transfer Very weird stuff and this whole synchronize business is also very stupid like who seriously needs to synchronize music today. Everyone has Apple Music subscription and no one transfers music anymore or photos because 99% of people back up everything to iCloud and have it available on all devices so literally the only thing that I would ever want to transfer our random files and stuff that I want instantly available on my iPhone without having to use Wi-Fi and upload to iCloud and download. And to do that scope copying and pasting Apple makes it so complicated. This is why I was so hesitant about changing to Apple in the first place. It’s for all these little bugs that can drive me crazy.! but I still love the Apple hardware so I don’t think I’m going anywhere so fast
Thanks, Gary; The one sharing option missing for me, is mail. I keep all mail in Mail Boxes "On my Mac" which is great on the Mac, but hidden from me on iPhone / iPad. Photos does not show things that you have as files. It shows images in your Photos library. So if you want them to be seen in Photos, you'll need to import them into your Photos library. View it in the Files app, use the Share button and "Save Image" and it should send a copy there.
Sir at 4:29 what does Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected do? 1) What apps are synced using this? and is this syncing from iPhone to Mac or Mac to iPhone or both ways. 2) Moreover I recently found a very dangerous loop hole, If we go to the photos subsection and Sync photos from our Mac to iPhone by selecting a particular folder, it DELETES all the existing photos of our iPhone and only keeps the photos from folder synced from Mac, instead of just adding the new photos. 3) Kindly confirm if this loophole is there for "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" in general tab as well, as I do not want to lose any file on both my Mac and iPhone ( I don't have iCloud backup). Thanks and regards :)
Lots of big questions there. For the first one see support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/turn-automatic-syncing-on-or-off-on-mac-mchlda9a4a0e/mac For 2, yes, that is what "sync" means. It replaces the photos synced last time with the photos you want synced this time. Maybe consider using iCloud Photos if you want to modernize. Also use iCloud Drive to share your files with your Mac and iPhone instead of syncing.

Do you not have a copy of those photos on your Mac anymore? Not sure if there is a way and I don't have anything in that situation to try things out myself.
Depends on the app. Most iOS apps won't work on Mac. Some newer apps will work on M1/M2 Macs if the developer has allowed it. Just go to the App Store, search for them (make sure after the search you select iOS apps at the top), and then add them to your Mac. Otherwise, see if the developer has a Mac version available.

I am afraid if the file is spread online by irresponsible people. Because I have plans to sell my iphone and macbook. Thank you for your help and time Mr. Gary.
Do you have a Mac too? You can sync with iCloud or with a cable. Maybe you are already doing one or the other. Then copy or export them to the external. Or, you can use Image Capture to do it on your Mac too.
Make sure you have AirDrop enabled on the other device and set it to "Everyone" if you need to and nothing else works. You can use your charging cable or any iPhone lightning cable.
Unfortunately Apple have left its customers out to dry when it comes to OSX. None of your suggestions are supported on my Mac running High Sierra. Bought my first mac in 1993 but the time has come to ditch
How so? All of these should work only many devices using High Sierra. I suppose if you have a very old Mac (you never say which year Mac you have) then some of the options like AirDrop may not work. But file transfer over a cable and network file sharing would certainly work, among others.
@@jasper5016 Why not? And why wouldn't other methods work for you. You have so many options here: iCloud Photos, cable sync to Photos, cable sync to Image Capture, for instance. Apple gives you so many options but you seem to want something else? If so, how do you want it to work that is different than one of these?
Hi. You didn't mention an amazing method. You can just copy and paste files - try to command+C something on the Mac and then to select paste on the iPhone in the files app by taping and holding on any empty space.
Hi Gary. Another clear and easy to understand video! Well done. I find iCloud, once set up, does a masterful job duplicating the files and items you choose on all your devices without any further input. It just works seamlessly. It is a far cry from the old iTunes method of synchronizing, which was ponderous and opaque. Thank you for all you do! 👏👏👏
It's amazing how none of these 10 methods worked. Apple is really going to lose me. I am seriously going back to Windows. Apple has made it nearly impossible to do the most basic file organization/transferring tasks.

Why would my Apple devices all of a sudden stop recognizing any other devices to airdrop to? So you aren't using iCloud and you have no backup of your Mac? And you synced manually from your Mac to your iPhone before? This is going to be tough. You can turn on iCloud Photos and let your iPhone upload the photos to iCloud. Otherwise, AirDrop is your best bet. But you may not even have the full resolution versions of those photos on your iPhone. Not sure what you did to sync them before, exactly. Contact Apple Support for more help on this.

I don't think you can since the iPad doesn't have network file sharing. So put files in iCloud Drive on your iPad and you can easily see them anywhere.
What I want is the ability to just attach my iphone, as if it were a hard drive, to my laptop and then open up a finder window and drag and drop files to a hard drive on my laptop. Apple is so desperate for me to use one of their native apps like "photos" that they make this very simple to process do on a pc, very difficult. Pretend you have a hard drive that you want to move files onto your laptop from. You would just click on that on your desktop and then click through to the folder where your files are stored and then select files individually, or in groups, and drag them onto the laptop into different folders. I don't want to store photos and videos in "Photos", I want them in a series of other folders where I am storing such things for further processing. It's so easy to do on a pc but I have to figure this out every 6 months when I transfer large amounts of files from my Iphone to a mac. Image Capture is the best option for this, but I have to look it up every time I do this instead of just intuitively knowing how. The title suggests screen capture or taking a picture with your mac. Nonsense.
I get it. I know what you want. But keep in mind that for those of us using iCloud Drive (and iCloud Photos) it doesn't matter. I don't need to do this because my files are already available on my laptop. You are looking for one easy step to do this. Meanwhile, I have zero steps to do this. Just a different perspective. Having the option you want would be nice for those that want it, no doubt.

Double check you have VPN off before doing airdrop transfer, it may not work
Thanks, Gary; The one sharing option missing for me, is mail. I keep all mail in Mail Boxes "On my Mac" which is great on the Mac, but hidden from me on iPhone / iPad. I know I can export them as pdfs and then share them or put them into live email address folders, but then they appear in "All inboxes".
I would not use Mail to share files. All of these options are much better.
Hi Gary is there anyway to send a file or photos from a iphone/ipad to a mac without having to turn off it's firewall? When I have the firewall on the item I airdrop just says waiting to my PC, but if I turn off firewall and do it again I can receive an Airdropped file instantly. I can send airdrop something to a iphone/ipad from a PC no problem, but the other way around not unless I turn off the firewall. Kind of a pain in the butt to do that every time for airdrop. Any thoughts Thanks

Thank you for the great video! What is the name of the big cable port that is on the Mac Air model 2014, and also on the MacBook pro 2015? The one that was done away with now.
I don't know the names of these things😅☺
Impossible for me to guess which one you are talking about. This page lists all of the ports on a 2014 MacBook Air: support.apple.com/kb/sp700?locale=en_US

Great video on file transfers. Can I trim the file sizes down for photos and other large graphic images. Similar to what happens when file is sent out in Preview I believe?
Not sure what you mean, but you can certainly using graphics app (or just Photos) to lower the quality of the photo to reduce the size.
Hi, I just transferred images from ssd to my iPhone 15 in files app, but images are not showing in photos app, but these are available in files app. Suggest please
For the first one see support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/turn-automatic-syncing-on-or-off-on-mac-mchlda9a4a0e/mac
For 2, yes, that is what "sync" means. It replaces the photos synced last time with the photos you want synced this time. Maybe consider using iCloud Photos if you want to modernize. Also use iCloud Drive to share your files with your Mac and iPhone instead of syncing.
fact that there is a tutorial about this topic says enough about apple lol
I plug my Xr phone into my mac air with cable -usb but just keeps dinging and flashing trust this computer or don't trust computer

Flashing? Like it is connecting and disconnecting? Could be a bad cable or the port on your iPhone is broken.
Hello, thnx for your video. On my iPhone I have a read-only-photo-album ( transferred some time ago from annoteer MacBook to my iPhone). I don't manage to transfer this album neither by Photos neither by the Image app. Can you help me? Kr, Marc
So that was transferred from a Mac to your iPhone using the old cable-sync method with iTunes? Not sure how you'd get it from your iPhone back to your Mac. Do you not have a copy of those photos on your Mac anymore? Not sure if there is a way and I don't have anything in that situation to try things out myself.
good afternoon i have a problem, i need to copy or transfer all my apps from my iPhone 13 pro max pro to my imac how...
Is it possible to see all your folders on the iPhone or iPad when connected with a cable? It doesn’t seem like it. For example, the “Downloads” folder on my iPad doesn’t seem accessible, just folders for specific apps.
No, it doesn't work like that.
forgive my ignorance but @ 7:25 network file sharing .. im confused with wether I use my computers name/ admin password or my itunes account name and password. please help!
Your account. Network file sharing has nothing to do with iTunes.
Sir at 4:43 why did the folder "docs" containing 3 items not appear on your Mac?
Looks like I'm in the wrong place. You can see at the top it says "On My iPhone" so those are my local files, not iCloud ones.

Question: I connected a cable from my iPhone 13 to my iMac. I clicked to allow WiFi. But the phone did not show up as a device in Photos or Image Capture. Was I supposed to sync my iPhone after I connected the cable? Or should I call Apple Tech-Help to see what happened?
Did you unlock your iPhone? Did you disconnect and try again? But yes, call Apple Support if you can't get it working.
5:45 I checked the “show this iPhone when on wifi” box in finder. My iPhone shows up in finder over wifi, but not in my mac’s photos app. I tried restarting my Mac, but it still doesn’t show up. Any idea how to fix this?
Not sure if it does. I haven't synced photos that way in years so I'm not sure. You may need to connect with a cable for that, or look in the Finder for the option there.
Can you delete from using Image Capture, how do you delete all from iPhone after using image capture?
Yes, you can select and delete. Try it. Note that this won't work for synced photos or iCloud Photos, just "Camera Roll" photos.
Hi Gary, I have been trying to transfer some of my music from a very old ipod touch to my iphone 13. I have been able to transfer to my Macbook air but no matter what I try, I can't get it to copy to my iphone. The problem is only with music that I have taken from actual CD's and not purchased from itunes. I am a very senior citizen and not extremely tech savvy but I suspect that is the issue here. Am I beating my head against a wall? Thanks! Diane Sheridan
You usually don't transfer from and iPhone to a Mac. It is the other way around. Do you have the original files on your Mac from when you ripped the CDs?
Hi Gary thank you. The difficulty I have is transferring files between Mac and Windows. I can format,a drive so it it compatible on either, but dragging files onto the drive on Mac (jpegs) won’t open in windows and vice versa. Please help 🙏🙏
Don't know what would cause that. A .jpg file is just a standard file. It should work on either.
Trying to copy a cd manual with over 15 thousand pages from my MacBook Pro to my IPad. Do you have any video showing that? Thank you
That specifically? No. Number of "pages" doesn't matter. How big is the file? How are you trying to transfer it? What sort of problem are you having?
@@macmost First of all, thank you for reaching out to me. Is a Car repair manual on a CD. I think is in the MB as far as size. Is it possible to copy the contents of the CD into my IPad? MacBook Pro is kind of old with a cd slot. Thank you so much!
@@Vet-zj5lq Is it a PDF file on the CD? If so, you just copy the PDF file from the CD contents like you would from any other drive.
@@macmost so… copy the cd into the computer and then transfer it to the iPad? Thank you
@@Vet-zj5lq Copy the file on the CD, not the CD itself. Assuming it is a PDF, then you can share it to your iPad using iCloud Drive, or better yet, the Books app.
what if the 2 devices are using the same account
Same iCloud account? Then I would just use iCloud Drive to see the same files on both devices. That's the simplest way.
Does this work for music files too?
As files, yes. But if you mean music in the Music app, then no.
@@macmost What is the best way to transfer music from the Music app to my computer? I am finding it almost impossible to do that without having to resort to a third party app
@@joseyzadoria7815 FROM your iPhone TO you Mac? It doesn't go that way. If you use the sync method it goes from Mac to iPhone. So you should have the music on your Mac already. If not, like maybe you deleted it, just go back and get it again from the source or your backup.
@@macmost Yes! I was originally wanting to get songs from I-phone to my MAC because the songs are only on my phone and not in my I-tunes. Is there a way to transfer MP3’s that are in the music app on my iPhone to my
Mac?
It easily, no. Do you not have the original files that would have been on your Mac or PC in order to get to you iPhone? Can you just rip the CD again, if that is where it came from?
@@macmost Thanks for the reply. The original file disappeared from my Mac and doesn't show up in time machine. I can probably find the CD it came from. It just seems like there should be a way to transfer it from the iPhone to the Mac just like any other file. Just another Apple thing.
@@ncwoodie Ah, but that's the issue. It isn't just like "any other file." It is a piece of media in a synced library. If it was a file in the Files app, you could do it.

Hello Mr. Gary, I want to ask you a question. How to reset iphone permanently. On my iphone there are files that are private and I have moved them to the hard disk. I've known on Android, that even if the phone has been deleted and reset, there is still something that can bring back the files that were there. Is this possible on iphone or macbook? I am afraid if the file is spread online by irresponsible people. Because I have plans to sell my iphone and macbook. Thank you for your help and time Mr. Gary.
See support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351 Once you reset it, the files are gone.
How can I put all
My photos off iPhone to external drive ?
Do you have a Mac too? You can sync with iCloud or with a cable. Maybe you are already doing one or the other. Then copy or export them to the external. Or, you can use Image Capture to do it on your Mac too.
What kind of cable? I tried to air drop and it said there is no one nearby to share with. Huh?
Make sure you have AirDrop enabled on the other device and set it to "Everyone" if you need to and nothing else works. You can use your charging cable or any iPhone lightning cable.
iPhone is visible in Finder but not in Photos. Huh?
Unfortunately Apple have left its customers out to dry when it comes to OSX. None of your suggestions are supported on my Mac running High Sierra. Bought my first mac in 1993 but the time has come to ditch
How so? All of these should work only many devices using High Sierra. I suppose if you have a very old Mac (you never say which year Mac you have) then some of the options like AirDrop may not work. But file transfer over a cable and network file sharing would certainly work, among others.
If only Apple would unshackle the iPhone from its slow lightning connector and use USB C like on the iPads. Sigh.
Rumors point to that happening soon. But it is just one end of a cable. It won't make much of a difference.
Isnt it shameful that Apple sells so costly macbooks and still they dont provide a better software for copying files directly.
Huh? What do you mean by that. I give 10 ways to do it here. AirDrop alone is pretty much as direct as you can get.
@@macmost I have 8000 photos in my mobile. I cannot transfer it using AirDrop
It wants to go through iCloud, which I haven't subscribed and I don't intend to. Your method failed miserably.
Which method? I give 10. Whichever method you choose, what makes you think it wants to "go through" iCloud?
This was a very rushed presentation.

Network File Sharing was exactly want I needed ! Once again, thank you Gary 🙏
It's amazing how none of these 10 methods worked. Apple is really going to lose me. I am seriously going back to Windows. Apple has made it nearly impossible to do the most basic file organization/transferring tasks.

Possibly. Depends on the files and how well-organized you are. Try it and see.
WOW! All I want to do is move an MP4 movie from my Mac to my iPad, and have it show up in the iPad TV app. I did not see how any of your procedures would accomplish this. Now I understand why people pay $300 for Walter Pro. Just drag and drop.

Why would my Apple devices all of a sudden stop recognizing any other devices to airdrop to? Wifi connected & signed in on all devices, it worked many times before but now neither phone nor iPad recognize the MacBook from either direction. I had to go as far as use that network shared server option to get my files.. which is handy, thanks for that!
Not sure. Try restarting them.
I synced photos from my mac to my iphone which now appear as "From My Mac" in my iphone. Now my mac got reset due to some reason, how can I sync those "From My Mac" photos back with my Mac ? Photos app in Mac is showing only newly clicked under Imports Section. Airdrop is frequently failing.
Hi Gary I just bought new iPhone 15 and wondered could you help me sync it to my iMac as the cables are incompatible I know its a big ask but Im sure you could help me best wishes Jim
If you want to do a cable sync, you'd need a cable. Just get a regular USB-C to USB-C (assuming your Mac is USB-C) and use that.
Hi, can you do vice versa? transfer photos from your macbook to iphone. like photos you took from sa dslr camera.
Photos as files? Or photos in the Photos App Library? For the first, just use iCloud Drive, that's the easiest. For the second, using iCloud Photos Library is the way to go. Otherwise, the old cable-sync method.
Is there a way to direct photos taken on my iphone directly into a folder/album in photos, through icloud, rather than them just appearing in recents? Then I could have a separate folder for phone photos to access on my mac.

I don't think you can since the iPad doesn't have network file sharing. So put files in iCloud Drive on your iPad and you can easily see them anywhere.
very useful thank you!
