This is unbelievably accurate. True deep, dangerous depression takes it all away from you. The food tastes like ashes. It’s frightening how badly your senses go, even the ability to perceive color is dulled.

Mande Peer so true. When I was at my worse, food would taste like ashes, my mouth would go dry, and I'd get nauseous. I thought I was the only one until I saw this movie.

Terrible feelings. Everything around you looks like it is lost of the energy, power, colour and joy. You can't even move your mouth to eat.

I get the depression take on it with it tasting like ashes, I thought at first she said ashes because she is so tuned in to what’s to become of earth in the next couple day, Ashes!

I suffered from severe depression and when I did, food would always taste like ashes. My mouth would become dry and I'd feel nauseous.
Or, I'd be in my car driving and think, so casually, how easy it would be to let my car veer off a bridge or drive into a tree and kill me.
But I always remembered the distinct taste of ashes, when it came to food. It would physically keep me from eating. So for me, this scene was 100% accurate.

it shows how depressions works differently from person to person. my kind of depression was more like avoiding eating than not enjoying it, because it was like a self punishment for existing. just my personalexperience tho.

A beautiful moment in this film: a few aspects r being presented. Justine FEELS that she eats corpses (1) and Justine FEELS the future (everything's going to end) already, b4 others realise it. A special sensitivity and an extra sense: depression. I soooo love it cause that's EXACTLY how I feel with my depression n it mirrors it soooooo freaking well!!! PPL STOP STIGMATISING DEPRESSION NOW!

@@brijmsn I'm not the person of the comment above, but I've been going through a similar thing, so at least for me, exercise is like a moment of silence in my brain. The pain in my muscles and the gasps for air take all my attention. It's as if I was just a body at that moment, with no other thought but how tired I feel or how much my legs or arms burn. It's sort of a escape

Von Trier is commenting on something deeper here than just mere depression. Her personality at the beginning completely falls away and her true self emerges, no longer suppressed. When your mask for the world is stripped away along with everything else it can be hard to move, like how she has trouble getting in and out of the bathtub. It is extremely unpleasant being stripped down to your most primal form.
