  • On the night of her wedding, Justine is struggling to be happy even though it should be the happiest day of her life. It was an extravagant wedding paid for by her sister and brother-in-law who are trying to keep the bride and all the guests in-line. Meanwhile, Melancholia, a blue planet, is hurtling towards the Earth. Claire, Justine's sister, is struggling to maintain composure with fear of the impending disaster.

    The claps in the end hahaha. As much as this movie deals with depression, I love the dark humor it has throughout.

    "Why did you even bother coming?" Everyone should ask that question of themselves and of everybody else in the room at any and all"important" family gatherings.

      Maybe the whole point of the scene is how everyone is living on narrower time, or maybe occasions like weddings are cheap illusions. Everyone seems to ignore the fact it’s supposed to be a happy time but it’s riddled with unhappiness

      Indeed. My most memorable characters he has played was Hazel in Watership Down and Oxley in Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

    The motion of the camera, how it doesn't stay in one position but bounces around is genius, making us feel as if we're sitting there watching this argument unfold, like voyeurs. Then there's the tension building with the sound of the fork and chewing, before it climaxes to Claire's husband telling their mother to sit down..it works so well

    I have no idea why the father divorced the mother. She seems so emotionally stable, cheerful and not petty at all.

    John Hurt was indeed a fantastic actor. It's a shame, he passed away. My memorable roles of him are Hazel in Watership Down and Oxley in Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the crystal skull.

      That’s not something to be proud of. She’s being a bitter old hag because she’s not happy and doesn’t want anyone else to be

      You also like Gabrielle where she turns her back on her depressed daughter?

    • @ace625
      @ace625 3 года назад

      @@headphonic8 I don't think she's bitter. Just not willing to entertain other people's fantasies around romance and marriage and probably upset to see her daughter attempting to fit in while she can't.
