    I loved the opening overture. I like the fact that Von Trier didn't want us not knowing if the planets would collide, so he straight up shows us that they do. I love that the opening is not only a musical overture, but an emotional one, highlighting key emotional moments in the film.

    • @ginofactap
      @ginofactap 9 лет назад +3

      +Adrian Adams I precisely hated that we get to know right from the start if they collide, it took away the suspense from the ending, which is incredibly frightening on its own, but could've been ten times scarier.

    • @Battury
      @Battury 9 лет назад +11

      To paraphrase what he said in an interview, he said that because the movie isn't about not knowing if the planets will collide, he didn't want us to be distracted with the question. He wanted us to be able to focus on watching the character's reactions. He wanted there to be dramatic irony, and not suspense. And even still, I found myself succumbing to suspense at the end of the film anyway. Just watching the characters was enough for me, personally.

    • @ginofactap
      @ginofactap 9 лет назад +1

      Adrian Adams since i'm not a sucker for Mr. Lars, I still think it would've been much scarier without the knowing. you would still focus on their reactions, it's not like we're watching this movie waiting for big explosions and nothing else, you can tell from the very beginning this is a drama-driven film, not a popcorn time.
      I feel like he's treating us kinda like retards or something; 'let's put the big collision at the beginning so they can pay attention to my movie after' lol
      don't get me wrong, I understand his choice, I just think it wasn't the right one.

    • @Battury
      @Battury 9 лет назад +4

      While totally get your opinion, and I understand that I'm probably the minority, but he did go into the making of this film specifically to examine the idea that morose people seem to act much more calmly during times of crisis and catastrophe. And I think he just didn't want to pull away from that aspect of the film.
      Again though, totally get where you're coming from. The anxiety levels would be through the roof for me if I didn't know how the whole things ended, lol

    • @SaraStar7373
      @SaraStar7373 8 лет назад +2

      +Adrian Adams I sort of felt like it was also a way for the audience to really focus on the performances because when the man says to Claire it'll be fine and she sort of believes it, we are (or at least I was) totally struck with empathy and it really helped me get in the mood of the movie. I think if we weren't shown it or not, I'd be so focussed on whether it happens or not instead of the emotional consequences which Trier is showcasing.

    Also, in a lot of reviews I’ve heard people saying that people with depression would handle something like the end of the world because they are feel like the world is ending regularly. I don’t all the way agree. I actually think that a person with depression would handle it with grace because finally, there is an end. Relief is what I would feel. Which is why it seems like Justine’s character gets lighter by the end-she’s eating more, bathing, she knows that there not much longer before she’ll be at peace.

    Makes sense then. His films don't follow a standard narrative most of the time and are often divided into chapters (the traditional three-act thing doesn't exist in his world), so you'll have to get used to that when watching a Von Trier film. I'd suggest you watch Antichrist, it's the most "mainstream" film he's done, but still with the Von Trier elements (arthouse-like style, mixing symbolism with gruesome images and beautiful cinematography, unconventional characters, etc.)

    I’m in the minority but I agree with Matt. I think the wedding scene ended up being an hour of the 2:15 minute movie and it was about 20-30 minutes too long. I got that Justine was sliding into a deeper depression, but so many other things were included that were (to me) distracting to the plot. Like why did she keep saying that she wanted to talk to her father (and it seemed real urgent), and after several opportunities to chat she just set him up in a room for the night. Was the purpose of her and her mother taking a bath at the same time just to show that neither of them care about what’s happening? If so, I already gathered that 1000 times over by then. Now the second half, that was where I grew to love the movie.

    the blonde sister is the planet and Earth is the other sister...the blonde sister wanted to express to everyone what does it means being depressed....I think the movie is an attempt to express depression with galactic tools...

    It was one of those arty movies that don't make a point and nothing really gets explained but look pretty

    It's the second time I hear Matt being taken out of the movie he's watching because he's focusing on issues he shoudnl't be focusing on. Alexander and Stellan are related but their acting abilities and their characters made theiir performances and part of the sotry believable.

    I don't get how you don't see she inherited depression from her mother and also how you missed she is clairvoyant that's why she is so depressed she knows how many beans are in the jar, she knew civilization was over. For me, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen , but should have edited out the animal abuse nobody needs to see that.

    I hate it when movies ignore the fact that we've known Newtonian physics for centuries, even if it's not primarily a sci fi movie. A planet that has been hiding behind the sun?! come on...

    Right, because that's what someone with chronic depression needs... a movie about chronic depression.

    I just watched all 3 of the Depression trilogy, they were all good but from worst to best: Melancholia, Antichrist, Nymphomaniac (Director's Cut)

    And yet the world didn't actually end. Its about the title and 18 holes of golf. Not to be cherished. Tomorrow is Tuesday.

    I liked this movie. It was slow yes. But it's pace is very nice. A great piece of work.

      Thank you. This sums it up nicely for me. There are intricacies and niceties if you want to dig in but very simply this.

    Her husband isn't not there he just doesn't understand depression isn't just that simple where you have to always be there as you could sorta tell she was pushing him away a biy
