Yeah, the show is a lot less uplifting when you take all the subtext into consideration. For instance, this song is about Evan convincing himself that what he's doing is okay, even though he knows it's horrible. I mean, we literally never see Connor again after he commits suicide, it's all just Evan talking to himself (which is referenced later in the play). Think of how kind of self-manipulative it is for "Connor" to start singing "if you're falling in a forest...", even though the real Connor would have no idea what that means. Even just doesn't want to think of himself as a bad person. The animatic this person made for "For Forever" also shows some of the true meaning of that song. It's Evan kind of rewriting what actually happened in order to feel better about himself, to the point that he himself seems to buy into his own lie. It's kind of bitter-sweet when it comes to "If I Could Tell Her", since Even is kind of proclaiming how much he loves Zoe, but at the same time, he's lying to her in a way that convinces her to feel false sympathy for a brother that was probably abusive ("don't say it wasn't true that you were not the monster that I knew")

If you watch the full musical, there is this heartbreaking scene where "Connor" tells Evan to stop lying to himself and asks if he fell or he let go. Basically, Evan didn't fall out of that tree, he let go. This gets even more sad the more you think about it. Especially because in one of the cut songs we learn that the way Connor committed suicide was by overdosing on pills and he wasn't found for a while. Connor and Evan are very similar characters. The only difference is that people cared enough about Evan to find him quickly and rush him to the hospital. At this point in the musical Connor's starting to fade from peoples memories. Evan could easily end this whole thing and stop all the lying. But he doesn't because he could have easily been Connor. This song is him getting the idea for the Connor Project and deciding that he needs to keep the memory of Connor alive because no one deserves to be forgotten. At this point in the musical, the whole thing becomes more personal. He's not just doing this because he has to anymore. Sorry that was really long. Also, sorry for all the feels. I obsess over this musical way too much.

In most animatics the "conner project" just kinda appears out of nowhere, it's just there, and it's clear that Evan made it, but it doesn't show how. In this one, he first made the page, then a flyer and then worked on the page with connors family and his friends. It makes it more realistic and shows that it indeed wasn't as easy as just "It's there, it's called the connor project, Evan made it". IT'S A PROCRESS AND I ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT!!!

It makes no sense to try to prevent people from watching bootlegs. Most of the people who do are already fans of the musical (or Broadway fans in general) and, given the opportunity, would totally pay to go see it live. I live in Finland, there is absolutely no way for me to see this show live, so I see no problem with watching the bootleg of the show. It just made me love it more! And if there's ever the chance for me to see it live, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

One thing that bothers me about this musical is how douchy Evan is, like the "everyone should matter" line comes across as just so non sincere? Like he's profiteering off connors death- nothing bad about this animatic though, just the musical itself has some really unlikeable parts
I think that it A) might be the actor's usual voice or B) it was intentional, since he thinks that he shouldn't matter (which is kinda debatable but kinda canon) - plus this is when he turns into a massive douche.
In my opinion, it really shapes the character. Evan starts as this shy, anxious kid whom is about to graduate from high school. By the middle of the musical, he starts to open up more, however, it's due to his "friend's" death. And then at the end, he feels as though he back at square one, but it's the complete opposite. Just by the way he says certain lines, or does certain things, it can really show how the character is developing which I LOVE about Ben Platt!

I mean the reason why he did this from the begging was because he thought he would fix things for the Murphy's and that's explained in "words fail" when he tries to explain why he felt like lying was the good thing to do! Of course he felt guilty at the end and he said the truth! Okay he felt kind of nice for himself as well like when he first started creating fake memories with Connor and he said to Jared that the Murphy's didn't want him to stop talking but that wasn't his main goal. I like how his character was realistic and he wasn't the good innocent child that doesn't make mistakes. He was real and the musical passed a variety of social messages in a really smart way! In fact if he didn't lie we wouldn't have a musical at all cause that's what started everything 😂
Personally, I think thats what makes this musical so amazing. It’s realistic. You’re not always going to like the main character. No one is perfect, in fact, humans are the most selfish creatures out there. When someone dies, all we care about is what is missing from OUR lives. What they can no longer provide US. He is hiding from the parts of himself that are undesirable and trying to turn his manipulation into something good. Keyword, trying. The audience can tell this is wrong, but there is still pity for the kid that doesn’t want to be lost in the crowd. Evan just wants someone who isn’t obligated to care about him, to do just that. This fake image of Connor remains unnerving, it’s hard to know how to feel about Evan as a person, he really believes he’s doing whats right, “keeping Connors memory alive”. I’ve often said, if a person walked up to me and said, “the Earth is flat” and that is what they truly believed, then they are not lying, they are not a bad person. Evan believes he’s doing good, but it’s still built on a foundation of lies, which makes it hard to analyze him properly. As humans ARE. We just wait to see when the building he’s created inevitably crumbles. Evan tried to kill himself, he’s completely given up, people in this mindset tend to make irrational decisions. He might have thought this was his second chance to do some good, which is yet another reason for pity, we KNOW this will not end sadly, like when a child’s dog is dying and no one has the heart to tell them, “this doesn’t end well”. The songs near the end are him coming to terms with the life he’s been given, that no ones life is perfect. Not even Connors, with “the dad that stuck it out... a mom who just was there” and someone who could see the good in him. He has what he needs, and he can learn to be happy on his own. It’s honestly beautiful.

It makes no sense to try to prevent people from watching bootlegs. Most of the people who do are already fans of the musical (or Broadway fans in general) and, given the opportunity, would totally pay to go see it live. I live in Finland, there is absolutely no way for me to see this show live, so I see no problem with watching the bootleg of the show. It just made me love it more! And if there's ever the chance for me to see it live, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

One thing that bothers me about this musical is how douchy Evan is, like the "everyone should matter" line comes across as just so non sincere? Like he's profiteering off connors death- nothing bad about this animatic though, just the musical itself has some really unlikeable parts
I think that it A) might be the actor's usual voice or B) it was intentional, since he thinks that he shouldn't matter (which is kinda debatable but kinda canon) - plus this is when he turns into a massive douche.
In my opinion, it really shapes the character. Evan starts as this shy, anxious kid whom is about to graduate from high school. By the middle of the musical, he starts to open up more, however, it's due to his "friend's" death. And then at the end, he feels as though he back at square one, but it's the complete opposite. Just by the way he says certain lines, or does certain things, it can really show how the character is developing which I LOVE about Ben Platt!

I mean the reason why he did this from the begging was because he thought he would fix things for the Murphy's and that's explained in "words fail" when he tries to explain why he felt like lying was the good thing to do! Of course he felt guilty at the end and he said the truth! Okay he felt kind of nice for himself as well like when he first started creating fake memories with Connor and he said to Jared that the Murphy's didn't want him to stop talking but that wasn't his main goal. I like how his character was realistic and he wasn't the good innocent child that doesn't make mistakes. He was real and the musical passed a variety of social messages in a really smart way! In fact if he didn't lie we wouldn't have a musical at all cause that's what started everything 😂
Personally, I think thats what makes this musical so amazing.
It’s realistic. You’re not always going to like the main character. No one is perfect, in fact, humans are the most selfish creatures out there. When someone dies, all we care about is what is missing from OUR lives. What they can no longer provide US. He is hiding from the parts of himself that are undesirable and trying to turn his manipulation into something good. Keyword, trying. The audience can tell this is wrong, but there is still pity for the kid that doesn’t want to be lost in the crowd. Evan just wants someone who isn’t obligated to care about him, to do just that. This fake image of Connor remains unnerving, it’s hard to know how to feel about Evan as a person, he really believes he’s doing whats right, “keeping Connors memory alive”. I’ve often said, if a person walked up to me and said, “the Earth is flat” and that is what they truly believed, then they are not lying, they are not a bad person. Evan believes he’s doing good, but it’s still built on a foundation of lies, which makes it hard to analyze him properly. As humans ARE. We just wait to see when the building he’s created inevitably crumbles. Evan tried to kill himself, he’s completely given up, people in this mindset tend to make irrational decisions. He might have thought this was his second chance to do some good, which is yet another reason for pity, we KNOW this will not end sadly, like when a child’s dog is dying and no one has the heart to tell them, “this doesn’t end well”. The songs near the end are him coming to terms with the life he’s been given, that no ones life is perfect. Not even Connors, with “the dad that stuck it out... a mom who just was there” and someone who could see the good in him. He has what he needs, and he can learn to be happy on his own. It’s honestly beautiful.
