I think this artist is the only one so far who's been able to capture and reproduce *all* the aspects of this emotional, controversial, beautiful song (and musical). It's amazingly well done, it takes my breath away.. the thumbnail does not bring him/her justice.

The people who Evan Hansen is talking/lying to are the Murphys. A boy named Connor Murphy committed suicide recently, but before he did, he signed Evan's cast at school. They were never friends, and Connor did it so he could pretend he had even a single friend before he went. Connor's parents believe that Evan was really friends with Connor, and wanted to know what they did together. Evan makes up a story about them going out to a field and climbing a tree. The flashing between the fantasy and reality happens because in reality, Evan had gone to the field alone and climbed the tree and jump down from it in an attempt to kill himself. His suicide attempt failed though, but throughout the musical he still struggles with depression and anxiety.

I can't help but think that Connor is just a more depressed and lost state of Evan, especially when in the lyrics the tree that Evan jumped off to commit suicide, is mentioned. When Connor says "Follow me" it must've been what Evan's thoughts were at the time, like "cmon let's do it" and so he does climb the tree and then y'all know what happens. In this song Evan probably makes up the story based on how he was feeling, like thinking what he might do after school, because he was lost or not being noticed by any crushes of his, so he must feel unloved and useless, therefore I feel that there's more connection between the two, even if Evan didn't know Connor he must've had some thoughts and understanding to why Connor decided to end his life.

I think that this might be the best animatic for this musical, and I'm not trying to be biased. You truly encompassed the great tragedy of Connor's death, and the facial expressions of Zoe and Cynthia are phenomenal. Besides your art style being gorgeous, the background color change when it goes to Evan's fantasy of having Connor as a friend and all the facial expressions shared between the two makes you want to think that "hey, they were good friends :)" . But then, you see the little flashes between the reality of what happen, and if your heart didn't already break, now it did. I think what you did best though, is how well you showed the "what if" of the situation. The "What if they were friends? What if because of that friendship Connor didn't commit suicide? What if because of that friendship Evan never attempted suicide?" Truly, amazing work.

This song never made me cry before. But the instant it switched to them in the car (before you even got to the rough part) I started to tear up because you could just tell how much he wanted it to be true. This was so well done.

Sarah Gon but connor did come to talk to Evan and signed Evan's cast and if he hadn't thought Evan was making fun of him they could have become real friends over time (that's how I think of it anyway). Connor was struggling with living up to the disappointment he felt everyone thought he was and so he got angry easily and made bad decisions whenever he felt attacked or scared, hence why he pushed Evan when Evan was laughing at Jared's joke and why he blew up at the prospect of Evan trying to make him look bad by watching him read a letter about Connor's sister. ((this is how I interpreted everything at least))
Colleen W True. Although I must say that Connor wasn't just hard to deal with because of his character, but also because of drugs. Signing Evan's cast was a really nice gesture that shows the person he _could_ have been.. but wasn't. He was probably drawn to drugs by the fact that family fights, disappointed expectations, peers' rumors and inner voices made him feel overwhelmed, searching for an escape in smoke. I guess he felt the pressure to be so strong that he snapped, running away from himself and into drugs, which only enhanced his temperamental behaviour. You can clearly see he, too, was afraid of being ridiculed and mocked by the others - just like Evans, but in a different way. Evans ran away from the external world, hiding from it because he was too scared and just shut in his house; Connor ran away from real life through drugs, trying to step outside of his messy life. The two of them were very alike, both broken souls, but being together wouldn't have mended either. Remember their reactions when they felt threatened (Connor with the letter and Evan that Zoe would break up)? They both curled up in their fears shutting everyone else out, overreacting because they were so scared - because they were so used to tearing themselves down that they wouldn't believe any positive case scenario. I believe that there is some truth in "If I could tell her", because Connor obviously kept most of his thoughts inside his head, which lead him to extreme negativity and self underestimation.. it's never good to keep everything inside, it only haunts you more until you eventually believe it. To get out of the darkness you need to see the light and accept them both, but to see the light you must see things objectively; and none of them could. It's very unlikely (almost impossible) that they could have become friends, but even if under some kind of spell they could have overcome the first obstacles I don't think they could have helped each other up and out of the dark. Felt less alone sure, but still lonely... still invisible to everyone else in the world (Evans) - or too visible and made fun of (Connor).
This song reminds me of my friend. We'd known each other literally since birth because we lived right next to each other and our parents would let us hang out in the backyard in the sandbox and stuff. We always stayed friends, and even when we had problems and stuff, we'd help each other out. We had this little park a ways away from our houses that had this huge oak tree, and we'd always climb it together. Whenever one of us was sad, we'd text each other to meet at the tree and we always would be there. One day at school she told me she'd be moving somewhere an hour away, and I was upset for the rest of the day at school. She knew this and said to meet after school at our tree. I went, and after fifteen minutes she texted me, apologetically, that she couldn't. She had to go check out her new house over an hour away. I said it was fine and sat in the tree for an hour or two, chilling, crying, listening to music, all that. And then she moved. And then she attempted suicide. I don't think either of us are super happy or okay right now but we keep in touch and whenever she comes to my place we go looking for new secret spots and trees and creeks and stuff in my neighborhood. It's not perfect, nothing is, but it's nice and we like it. (Sorry for going on a lot but haha this totally reminded me of us.) (Also if you're reading this, friend I talked about, um,, hi? I know you love DEH so idk you could see this maybe. How are you today?)
I love your work! The art style is nice and the animation is fluid. Another thing I like is that this animatic acknowledges that this was made up by Evan, and I love the part where you switch from imagination (Evan and Connor together being best buds) and reality (Evan committing suicide alone [i think]). I also love that you include the Murphy family! Well done
Connor committed suicide, however Evan had a suicide attempt the summer prior to his senior year. Evan's suicide attempt is depicted in this animatic, where he essentially climbed to the top of a tall tree and let go. This is contrary to the lie he builds, where he and Connor climbed the tree for fun and Evan simply fell. This also explains the repeated phrase of "when you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around" throughout the musical, because no one came to get Evan when he tried to kill himself. That also makes this animatic/song very sad, because in his lie Connor "comes to get him, and everything is okay". (Okay, rant over!)

oh my god... i have been waiting SO LONG for someone to draw this song and do it justice ... and can i just say that your understanding of the musical (the fact that you included Connor's family, the fact you added those parts of reality to remind us that evan was actually all alone, which something a LOT of people fail to show) plus the fluid animation really REALLY makes this one of the best dear evan hansen animatics out there. I havnt cried from an animatic for ahwile but DANNNG this was so emotional. I was looking for something like this for this song. Its not just Evan trying to make the family feel better, i think it was almost as if he was trying to fool himself too. He was trying to create a fantasy of something good but those flashes of what was really happening DANG JUST SO STUNNING

I can't help but think that Connor is just a more depressed and lost state of Evan, especially when in the lyrics the tree that Evan jumped off to commit suicide, is mentioned. When Connor says "Follow me" it must've been what Evan's thoughts were at the time, like "cmon let's do it" and so he does climb the tree and then y'all know what happens. In this song Evan probably makes up the story based on how he was feeling, like thinking what he might do after school, because he was lost or not being noticed by any crushes of his, so he must feel unloved and useless, therefore I feel that there's more connection between the two, even if Evan didn't know Connor he must've had some thoughts and understanding to why Connor decided to end his life.

I think that this might be the best animatic for this musical, and I'm not trying to be biased. You truly encompassed the great tragedy of Connor's death, and the facial expressions of Zoe and Cynthia are phenomenal. Besides your art style being gorgeous, the background color change when it goes to Evan's fantasy of having Connor as a friend and all the facial expressions shared between the two makes you want to think that "hey, they were good friends :)" . But then, you see the little flashes between the reality of what happen, and if your heart didn't already break, now it did. I think what you did best though, is how well you showed the "what if" of the situation. The "What if they were friends? What if because of that friendship Connor didn't commit suicide? What if because of that friendship Evan never attempted suicide?" Truly, amazing work.

Sarah Gon but connor did come to talk to Evan and signed Evan's cast and if he hadn't thought Evan was making fun of him they could have become real friends over time (that's how I think of it anyway). Connor was struggling with living up to the disappointment he felt everyone thought he was and so he got angry easily and made bad decisions whenever he felt attacked or scared, hence why he pushed Evan when Evan was laughing at Jared's joke and why he blew up at the prospect of Evan trying to make him look bad by watching him read a letter about Connor's sister. ((this is how I interpreted everything at least))
Colleen W True. Although I must say that Connor wasn't just hard to deal with because of his character, but also because of drugs. Signing Evan's cast was a really nice gesture that shows the person he _could_ have been.. but wasn't. He was probably drawn to drugs by the fact that family fights, disappointed expectations, peers' rumors and inner voices made him feel overwhelmed, searching for an escape in smoke. I guess he felt the pressure to be so strong that he snapped, running away from himself and into drugs, which only enhanced his temperamental behaviour. You can clearly see he, too, was afraid of being ridiculed and mocked by the others - just like Evans, but in a different way. Evans ran away from the external world, hiding from it because he was too scared and just shut in his house; Connor ran away from real life through drugs, trying to step outside of his messy life. The two of them were very alike, both broken souls, but being together wouldn't have mended either. Remember their reactions when they felt threatened (Connor with the letter and Evan that Zoe would break up)? They both curled up in their fears shutting everyone else out, overreacting because they were so scared - because they were so used to tearing themselves down that they wouldn't believe any positive case scenario.
I believe that there is some truth in "If I could tell her", because Connor obviously kept most of his thoughts inside his head, which lead him to extreme negativity and self underestimation.. it's never good to keep everything inside, it only haunts you more until you eventually believe it.
To get out of the darkness you need to see the light and accept them both, but to see the light you must see things objectively; and none of them could. It's very unlikely (almost impossible) that they could have become friends, but even if under some kind of spell they could have overcome the first obstacles I don't think they could have helped each other up and out of the dark. Felt less alone sure, but still lonely... still invisible to everyone else in the world (Evans) - or too visible and made fun of (Connor).

This song reminds me of my friend. We'd known each other literally since birth because we lived right next to each other and our parents would let us hang out in the backyard in the sandbox and stuff. We always stayed friends, and even when we had problems and stuff, we'd help each other out. We had this little park a ways away from our houses that had this huge oak tree, and we'd always climb it together. Whenever one of us was sad, we'd text each other to meet at the tree and we always would be there. One day at school she told me she'd be moving somewhere an hour away, and I was upset for the rest of the day at school. She knew this and said to meet after school at our tree. I went, and after fifteen minutes she texted me, apologetically, that she couldn't. She had to go check out her new house over an hour away. I said it was fine and sat in the tree for an hour or two, chilling, crying, listening to music, all that. And then she moved. And then she attempted suicide.
I don't think either of us are super happy or okay right now but we keep in touch and whenever she comes to my place we go looking for new secret spots and trees and creeks and stuff in my neighborhood. It's not perfect, nothing is, but it's nice and we like it.
(Sorry for going on a lot but haha this totally reminded me of us.)

I love your work! The art style is nice and the animation is fluid. Another thing I like is that this animatic acknowledges that this was made up by Evan, and I love the part where you switch from imagination (Evan and Connor together being best buds) and reality (Evan committing suicide alone [i think]). I also love that you include the Murphy family! Well done
Connor committed suicide, however Evan had a suicide attempt the summer prior to his senior year. Evan's suicide attempt is depicted in this animatic, where he essentially climbed to the top of a tall tree and let go. This is contrary to the lie he builds, where he and Connor climbed the tree for fun and Evan simply fell.
This also explains the repeated phrase of "when you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around" throughout the musical, because no one came to get Evan when he tried to kill himself. That also makes this animatic/song very sad, because in his lie Connor "comes to get him, and everything is okay".
