The writing of this show is stunning. The only time he could be honest and show empathy to another boss is when they're alone. It is all about strength, business, and competency when the crew is around, but man-to-man, it comes down to respect. This was shown with little groans, silences, and gestures. Truly incredible writing.

That moment after Tommy says they're using his boy and we see a close up of Alfie's face, it's the first (and maybe only?) time Alfie has genuine fear in his eyes. This is what Tommy is referring to when he says "I saw". Because of Alfie's reputation, for him to be genuinely scared, he has to be massively caught off guard to lose his composure. This is what makes Tommy realise he actually had no idea about what he was talking about.
Compare this to when Alfie meets Changretta about taking his men to the boxing match (trying to avoid spoilers for those who haven't seen it) and he doesn't break a sweat.
    Unbelievable acting.

@@eneveasi Yup. The Blinders starting a fight with The Changrettas unprovoked is one of the biggest flaws in the series. I understand that it probably had to do with John wanting off from the series but the way they did it just doesn’t make sense at all. Also, the reoccurring theme of “ I made friends with the people above your rank therefore I can take you down” made the story pretty stale.

Tommy's gift for reading people, is what what scares Alfie. Nothing else. They're equal in all other regards tactically. And Alfie can't counter it, can't read tommy back, not well enough to make a winning difference. Intensely frustrating for them both because of what it is tommy reads on Alfie keeps surprising him and breaking his stride. Tommy is like amazed at the show, and sorta gave up trying to work out why Alfie's putting it on. They are both made of scars.

I would bet anything on this:
Cillian Murphy’s silence during Hardy’s monologue might have been scripted, but I don’t think that mattered.
Because I believe Murphy stood there in silent awe at just how balls out brilliant Tom Hardy as Alfie Solomons is.
    I know I was.
Hardy as Solomons is one of the greatest acting turns in television history, and concrete proof that Hardy is quite possibly the Gary Oldman of his time-and that is high, high praise.

    • @YanzBra
      @YanzBra 10 месяцев назад +27

Partially yes, but the pay-off of this entire scene is the final line, "i know, i saw". The subtext being that these two characters are so intertwined that Tommy recognised the response pattern from Alfie after learning they had Tommy's boy going from playing coy, to anger and deflection, which is our of character for him. People who are guilty and lying generally don't get aggressive like this and i think thats what makes thia scene so great. The subtle read Tommy makes on Alfie and that he lets him get his monologue out once he realises. Great writing and a brilliantly acted scene.

But nobody becomes the person they are portraying like Hardy. He is a chameleon. Watch him in Blackhawk Down. Then watch him as Bane in Batman. Then watch him in this performance. You get the distinct impression they are 3 different people even though you know better. Or just watch his performance as Charlie Bronson. And do not get me started on Cillian Murphy. Foolishly enough I was apprehensive again with Heath being cast as the Joker, and we all know he destroyed expectations. The only character who doesn't seem like an amazing casting choice was Anne Hathway as Catwoman, even though she did fine in the role. In my opinion, he has the best cast Batman in history, only close second for me would be the animated series.

If you could an Oscar for one scene, Tom Hardy would get it for this one. He's amazing how he calls Tommy out and the world they live in.

The complete 180 from "Alfie, you are meant to have these things." to "You fuckin' what?" gave me whiplash. Tom Hardy is an absolute treasure. Five words from Tommy and he went from 0 to 100 with nothing in between.

You got to have dirt deep down inside to be able to play in the mud like Tom Hardy does here. He plays 100s of emotions here, loud and subtle without skipping a beat. Dude is really something else

The first thing I'd ever seen Tom Hardy was in Peaky Blinders. My first thought was what an amazing actor. Even with all of the other amazing actors in this show, in his first few seconds he mad an amazing impression. Here he is again, just owning the scene.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen tommy as defeated at this point in the story than this scene. Alfie is one of the few outside his family that can humble the shit out of tommy
    They’re on the same wavelength

This scene is just the benchmark of gangster's meeting, when one is up to kill but the other saved himself with his mind of presence & factual words, the character tom hardy adopted was just one if the greatest performance of gangster's role.

    • @austinlee43

The only thing that saved him was it’s a tv show. If you crossed a real gangster, sold information to their rivals, and part of the reason your son is kidnapped…you’re 💯 not living. Idc if you’re his brother, dad, friend, etc. That’d be your last day.

The acting is BRILLIANT. I HAVE to say though, w. Such brilliant minds doing these scenes, lines etc etc ....is it not possible to draw from the vast history of wordage of explicates. In order to NOT OVER/abuse the 'f' bomb. I know, I know. It's today's 'power house' verbal punch, but WRITERS HAVE AMAZING RESOURCES, and with, Ie; from -THESE CHARACTERS could be the smooth, narry a glitch in performance or 'speechifyin'

Tom Hardy is so good at playing Alfie because in Season 2 peoducing he asked the director to do his character as he likes him to be. That is why he is epic to see with his dialogues because it is most likely Tom Hardy being a bit himself, he liked to play in the show so much he asked to be brought back in S5 after being shot in the face at the end of S4
