Hardy is the most unique among British actors. He is neither better nor worse. He's just different. Another level of acting. He is not playing a character. He creates it. Hardy just fills the screen and you can't take your eyes off him. I love it ❤
I love how when Billy Kitchen returns Alfie's gaze, then looks away, Alfie keeps gazing at him for an unnecessarily long time as if to state that he can do whatever he wants in his house. His power in that domain is unquestioned.
And by staring back, Billy lets him know that he's not scared of him, but then hums in agreement to show that, out of respect, he won't give Alfie any problems.

As a Londoner it's very difficult for me to tell what actually Alfie is supposed to be because if I remember correctly, he's supposed to be from Camden which is North-West London, on the border of the city. You don't typically get cockneys there. You do get some people who speak like Cockneys in West London but never Camden really so I'm curious to understand this portrayal myself. Tom Hardy is from Hammersmith and there are some people in that area of London (Hammersmith, Fulham, Chelsea, Kensington) that do talk like this - but from the old generation (given that entire circle of London is highly out of reach in affordability for the locals). So I feel like he's drawn on that old Chelsea style of cockney (you know, before Chelsea was a millionaire's playground) for this role. It makes zero sense of course due to Alfie being from Camden but it's the only excuse I have. If you want a comparison, watch some clips from Legend where the same actor plays an East London cockney, it's VERY similar to the accent he's putting on here (but it's not the same dialect).

What's interesting here is that they were already sus men before the war, but its almost like the war left a permanent imprint on them, so much as its like they can't even leave the mindset of being a soldier, and fighting battles against whomever the enemy is. Even after coming home they are still looking for a war to fight, and will continue to do so until the day they die.
So, the touch of this is. More times than not in the military. When in formation/training/exercises/etc. You were not the one punished, although yes you'd get smoked. But, most times others would recieve the punishment while you stood there face to face with whomever you rubbed the wrong way. Mainly this was to show you worked as a unit and a f*ck up from one person will most likely hurt everyone, but also it was damn good for accountibilty. Much rather get smoked in front of everyone, than everyone else get smoked and you get balled up that night.

Still searching for that elusive all-encompassing part that wins the BAFTA/OSCAR golden trinket, yeah?? Wonder which director he admires enough to accept a really 'off his comfort zone' part... something so not him but super challenging to his understanding of his art. My 2 cents. {:-))

The contrast in tactics works superbly... for a while. Eventually, the "rabid" one either becomes traitorous or brings down way too much heat. However, when it's working, few can stand in the way of a calm, rational tactician and his bulldog. That's not to say Alfie isn't brilliant in his own way. He built something large. Buuuut he was going to lose the war without Shelby.
