QOTD: What lens do you use the most? LMK 👇 👇 👇 Also, check out other videos in our BEST Budget RUclips Equipment series here ➡️➡️➡️ bit.ly/BestBudgetGear
I am starting out my channel with the 24mm, what is the typical distance you use with it you did not say in the video. thanks love your channel. i'm using t5i so crop sensor.
Excellent explanation and examples. I use a cheap 50mm lens because my "set" has some depth to it, with lighting in the background, so I like the blurring back there.
Was searching on RUclips to learn about what the numbers on lenses mean. after 3 different videos, I clicked on yours. Your video made me understand not only what the numbers mean but what the numbers on the lenses help to achieve. Really really love this video for learning. Will be coming back to take more notes. Thank you!! Liked and Subbed!
Just to throw out some important info to consider. If you are using a Canon Rebel series camera- you have to multiply 1.6 (crop factor) by the focal length to get the TRUE or actual focal length. Example: Canon EF 10 -18 mm X 1.6 (crop factor) actually = 16-32 mm or 18-55 mm X 1.6(crop factor) actually = 28.8 - 88 mm Thanks! Great video!
True. However, that doesn't apply to EF-S lenses correct? The 10-18 EF-S is a crop sensor lens ... vs... the Canon EF 17-40mm. The 17-40 on a crop camera would be multiplied by 1.6... but a native crop sensors lenses should be true to the focal length they promise. Unless I'm wrong...
EF-S lenses are still the same focal length and still need to multiply by the crop factor but the actual lens only needs to let light in to cover the smaller sensor. A crop lens put on full frame will actually have part of the image cut off because the sensor is so much larger. (If the lens even works as some will and some wont) crop cameras can use larger lenses meant for full frame as well.
Was going to mention that the mm distance you mention isn't the same on all cameras because of sensor size but you hit on that at 15 minutes in. Good explanation of distances and showing how they appear.
Ive watched 5 different videos on lenses and this is the first one that actually explains the mm effect on how the subject looks and not just the difference between the focal lengths. Thank you!!
i have been saving this video in my watch later playlist for so long so that i'll watch it when i have a dslr, now that i have one this video helped me so much, thanks for your help
This is excellent. I'm a newbie photographer, not a RUclipsr, but the way you portrayed the different focal lengths while providing the side camera shot at the same time is invaluable for everyone. Also, you're an excellent teacher. Your delivery is spot-on, you have excellent emphasis with your voice, and the raw examples of everything like the two cameras that I mentioned above is fantastic. I'm not sure if you follow Jonathan Morrison, but you two have very similar vocal delivery and "we're going to show you raw examples" kinds of approaches to things, which is awesome-it's a compliment to you and him, I think you two could work together. :D Great video overall, thanks for making this!
I have been solely using my kit lens zoomed in as much as possible for the space I have. I'm wanting to get the Nifty 50 for filming (maybe the 24 now that you bring it to my attention they seem similar for what I'm hoping to achieve) I also want to get a telezoom lens for nature shots soon
Shelbizleee just remember if you are getting 50mm lens it will be 80mm if u have crop sensor camera. You probably know this. I didnt know this for very long😅
You have hit the nail right on the head by this topic. We new users or DSLR or potential buyers need this and more to figure out what’s best for us. Please do a bit more of these videos especially Art Lens and Fixed Focal Length Lens
My tip is to start where you are with what you have, and be creative with it! I have two kit lenses with my Nikon and I just picked up a Nikkor/Nikon 50mm f/1.8 used for $60! So, I'm learning to maximize in the limitations until I can move up a notch or two, I am LOVING the 50mm though! That depth of field effect is intoxicating!
Just getting into DSLRs as I am going on a Euro trip with the GF and going to be blogging. I can't thank you enough for the detail and explanation in the video. Keep up the great work!
thanks sean, i'm a beginner and learn a lots from this channel, i use canon 1200d with 18-55mm IS STM Lens & yongnuo lens 35mm & 50mm, after watching this i'm going to buy Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens
Great video, I really enjoy your tutorials. Out of interest, what Camera and Mic settings do you use for your Rode Vid Mic Pro (on boom) and the camera?
I was just going to buy a new DSLR for shooting my Recipe videos which currently i am doing with cell phone Mate 10 lite. So i was actually confused about the lenses as i have no idea or experience about DSLR. Now due to this video i understand what i will need. Thanks.
I’m a film major and the biggest thing I struggle with is understanding lenses. I bought a canon rebel T6 two years ago without doing any research and it’s not that good for video and I’m trying to upgrade now. I’ve been researching non-stop the past month on what camera to get or just to get lenses. I decided I’m gonna get the Canon SL2 and get some lenses you recommend. I also watched your review on the SL2. Thank you for all your help I subscribed
The scope of lenses is absurdly huge and complex, so I appreciate the focused (pun intended) subject matter of this video for vlogging and the wide-angle lenses, especially with the use of different camera bodies.
this is video is perfect timing, we're just starting RUclips and this information is extremely helpful. Currently we shoot with the 18-55 that came with the camera, however we just bought the 24 mm, 10-18 will be the next on the list.
I have been considering which lens to get with a Blackmagic Pocket 4k, and I have been swimming in gear videos - but YOURS is the first video that helped me to immediately grasp what the numbers on these lenses mean and look like. Thank you so much for the clear and concise info!!
At the moment I am using a 18-55 kit lens on a Canon 80D but there is a lot of distortion...I think it is because the lighting isn't too good...I am really happy that I heard about the 24 mm lens it is not too expensive and I think it will work for me! Thank you so much! Your videos help me a lot and also inspires to push through wen sometimes I feel like quitting! Thank you!
At 6:00 the shot is actually less wide than the 24mm point and shoot. The SL2 is a crop sensor, so the 18mm is essentially giving the field of view of a 28mm focal length...
Great video! I'm starting my technology channel and I'm thinking of buying a lens for my canon sl2, but I do not know which to buy it. Which one would you recommend? 50 mm or 24mm? I want to make macro shots of product and medium shots for myself. I hope you can help me. Thank you!
you explained it so well, i would love to see a much longer video with a lot more detail's and some examples of different example shots and how to get different results. 18 mounts ago i started filming constant for my youtube channel, on an old note 3 cellphone, 5 months ago i started posting, and then 2 weeks ago i got my first DSLR, a cannon T2I with some lens, and this week i finally got all the cables, and battery's, so i have no idea how to use it, i am hopping i'll have the time and energy to play with it this week, it was your "just hit record", saying that got me started, and i am very slowly trying to follow all your advice... i hope to see a sequel to this great video. and i am hopping one day my video's would be at half the level that your video's are on.
Hi, I record lectures and my primary objective is to shoot a lecture while being focused on the whiteboard. If possible, Please suggest a camera lens + mic setup to invest in. Thank you in advance.
Great video! My fiance and I are starting our vlog channel this week and we have ordered a 11-22 lens from Cannon for wide shots in the car. We have just the stock EOS M5 lens right now and it's great for videos of us talking like about a topic, but not so great for walking around and vlogging. Thank you so much for your tips and your feedback! Your videos have helped this novice editor and cameraman actually come to this RUclips platform with some pretty cool stuff. You're crushing it and I hope to see you soon!
Τhat was very helpful! As you ve promised, I am waiting for the next video on lences, and if I may propose could you please take it to a couple of different events, like a sports game inside or outside, a low light evening party or wedding etc, and explain why you are choosing the lens you 're choosing and what aperture, ISO, shutter speed? 2-3 min per event for 2-3 different events will be a very informative and real life situation video that we all need. Thanks again for your good work Sean!
Additional thoughts for beginners on lenses, with fixed focal lengths: Fixed focal lengths can be really affordable and have a tendency to have sharper glass than the kit lens. But you really can´t zoom with these, which is not as bad as you might think. Also they are usually "faster", so they can let in a lot of more light than other lenses. You say they are "faster", because with more light coming into the camera you can increase the shutter speed in low light and also in general. Possible downside on these lenses: Unlike the kit lenses, they are not stabilized, so to get good footage you either need a slider, a solid in-camera stabilization or just a tripod for static shots. Or (!!) a really steady hand. But they are the most affordable lenses on the market and usually you will always find a great purpose for these lenses! QOTD Answer: I use 3 different lenses right now. An 8 mm fisheye 3.5 for filming skateboarding, the canon 18-55mm kit lens, for skateboarding and other filming and the canon 50 mm 1.8 for photography ( and also for filming). I love the sharpness and the bokeh for this unbelievable price.
I studied Film Production at university but we never looked at lenses so i was never sure what was best for filmmaking with my canon 700d. So thanks for the video, the examples helped me to understand better
Hi Sean! Thanks for the video. It's nice to know the distortion on each lens for each focal length. By the way, same here, my favorite lens so far is Canon 24mm f2.8 (pancake) too. But, most of time I'm not using it for video, just take picture use the lens. From my perspective it's a really great lens, the size is not too big (so flexible to bring it), the focus is fast, and the focal length is enough for anytime I use it.
I learn alot by watching your channel. I cant thank u enough for all the information and examples you give. I will put them to use for sure. Keep it up Think Media!

Ok... I think I'm wrong... reading this community.usa.canon.com/t5/Lenses/Does-an-EF-S-lens-focal-length-have-the-1-6-crop-factor/td-p/145516 👊💯
Yep, the crop still applies. :) That's where the weird focal range numbers come from...
Same also applies to the EOS M series cameras as well. :)
EF-S lenses are still the same focal length and still need to multiply by the crop factor but the actual lens only needs to let light in to cover the smaller sensor. Depth of field depends on 2 things, image magnification and aperture size. The focal length is irrelevant.
