Well, for me, I really like the 100mm 2.8 macro. It is great for what I do. I am trying like mad to get the SL2 since my other cams often fail me when filming. Their focus goes crazy when filming and as a nature channel, much of my subjects are pretty small. A lot of my videos are viewed by naturalists and students, so I really want to give them good content and quality.
Hi!
I'm trying to do some relatively close head shots in video, for youtube.
I currently have the kit lens, 18-55mm.
do I still need to get a 24mm? is the 24mm wide?
I've been hearing for so long to get a nifty-fifty.
but it seems the 24mm is better for my indoor use.
18-55mm IS STM
I need to make videos where I'm in front of a whiteboard so the focus needs to be able to allow the text on the whiteboard to not be fuzzy. The default lens with the T3I it seems to be unable to do a good job of getting both the speaker and the whiteboard. Any ideas?
Please Update the information's!!
Imagine saving up money only to have your lens show up under "Top 3 Cheap Cannon Lenses" on youtube lmao
🤘🤣
😭😭😭😭
😂😂😂
Haha 😂😂
Emotional damage 😂😂
The 10-18mm is soooo perfect for vlogging ! I bought it before going one month in India and it stayed 90% of the time on my 70d. Definitely recommend it, great focus, great stab, great angle.
Cool, good to know. I just ordered it along with an 80d so I can start vlogging in Tanzania where I live. I'll check out your India footage right now!
Great combo, you'll love it for sure ! (My videos are in french, so won't understand a lot I guess... :) )
hey where you have been in india?
Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Goa and Kerala. I've posted a 4min video about it if interested.
Antoine Lavenant I'm indian
great video ! I like that instead of talking too much you actually demonstrated the lenses that awesome
Thx - glad the video was helpful!
THiNK Media TV what do you think about me using some of these or at least the wide angle lense and a tulip and the adapter ring for my vixia r700?
THiNK Media TV thank you so much for your knowledge
YEs, Sean does a good job showing the quality of his ideas.
he looks like a dead corpse
I did an experiment...I watched other reviews before I went to this video. You stuff is just better than most. Your videos are super clear and easy to watch. Nice work dude as always
Already have the first two lenses and the 3rd in your list is getting delivered tomorrow! Can't wait to test it out on the vlog!!!
I just picked up a 24mm 2 weeks ago, and its one of the best lens ive used. Def worth the money!
Is it a great choice for recording yourself talking? Indoors
Thanks for creating this video. I currently use the Canon EF-S 10-18mm for my vlogs and I love it. It just doesn't take good night/dark videos so I'm looking at the EF-S 24 now. Great video! Please let me know if you know any other good nightime wide angle vlogging lenses.
Whenever I need a new piece of equipment, I always come by your channel to get your input first! Great job per usual!
The pancake lens is awesome. Great bokeh. I'm actually ordering the 10-18 tomorrow. Nice and wide. Gonna be great for my vlog. Great vid, Sean.
It's going to be awesome!!!! Keep crushing it Colin! :-)
Sean, I just want to throw a BIG THANK YOU at your direction. You're a great example of what it means to provide kick-ass, valuable content for your audience.
Thank you for this video!!! I just bought the 50mm lens and had NO Idea how far I'd have to be away from the camera. But, to my utter shock - after only using the stock lens - I hardly need any light and the quality is INSANE - insanely amazing! :))) I am so happy. But, now need to get a super long mic cord (just bought it) and some other cords and things so I can keep the camera that far away. I am very impressed though. I had so many great lights setup - so many, but they were not enough with the stock lens. Now, I hardly need two basic lights (I have no natural light where I'm shooting) and the video is stunning.
Free to Speak if we shoot handheld ll it be to shaky with 50mm
I had to get the 28mm f1.8 in the end. Noit as cheap but much more useful on a crop body. Turned out great when I moved to FF, so a bonus there too.
You're always thought-provoking. Thank you for the recommendations.
Thanks David! Your welcome! :-)
G
GREAT instruction without any fluff; thanks Sean!!!
SIGMA 17-50mm f/2.8 works great for a WIDE array of videos. I use it on all of my vlogs. Pair it with an ND filter and you get amazing quality for an affordable price.
Thank you for captioning your content! As an aspiring editor who is deaf, I sub AND rely on channels like yours for tips and information!!
Thank you so much! I've been looking for a lens that's around 10mm - 24mm. This helped a lot!
Awesome - keep crushing it!
Thanks for sharing this! I have the Canon 70D for filming my youtube videos. I have been mostly using the 18-55mm lens, but wanted to get that blurry background so purchased the 50mm STM lens. I love how it blurs the background but don't like how the camera has to be so far from me. I've had the 24mm lens in my amazon cart and this video has helped me decide to pull the trigger and purchase it! Thanks Sean!
Sean I love your stuff it's helped me so much over the years! Just wondering what lens would be best for youtube videos, not too worried about price as it's Black Friday and I'm happy to invest in my work? I have a Canon Eos 6D (not mark II) - Joe
Crazy seeing you here haha. Seems like the channel has been getting on quite well! God bless 🙏🏽
So helpful. Thank you!!!
I adore these types of videos, they are SO incredibly helpful, Sean! Between you and DSLRGuide, I feel like I'm really challenging myself and creating more interesting and creative content on my channel. I'm primarily a fashion/vlogging channel but I feel like I'm taking it to the next level thanks to you!
P
2019 and I keep watching your videos because they are amazing (always go back to the basic information to refresh the memory)✌️
I have the 24mm pancake lens I use on my 70d it's amazing, I highly recommend it
mary how loud is the af?
will the 24mm pancake lens be capable for the Canon eos rebel sl2?
Does it work for a Canon 1300d?
Great video! How does the info in this video hold up now that it is 2020? Any newer or updated recommendations?
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens Great lens...
For video ?
For video it more zoom
Thanks for all of the useful info, great video!
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, is also a great cheap lens!
The canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is the same Lens but for APS-C cameras
On my vids - this lens always gives me the best look.
João Maria Vasconcelos Fontes de Barros Taveira is it better then the 50mm ?
That 10-18mm lens reminds me of a Puffy and Ma$e video from the 90s.
Starting my RUclips channel and I’m so worried I will buy the wrong lens.
I have the 24mm. I use it on my Canon 77D. In my opinion it’s worth a lot more than the $129 that I paid. Sharp, Silent focus, beautiful bokeh. It’s a nice walk around lens.
I make videos in abandoned places. Anyone could answer this, but would the first one be the best bet for me? Obviously I need to shoot in low light. Thanks!
Its surprising how much brighter it actually is! You should definitely check it out!
I would say an 18-35mm, or anything that is wide and has a small aperture, perhaps a fisheye!
No, shaky af for handheld
Sold me on the third option, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. This was a great video Sean, I always find amazing value in your videos!
You don't need expensive glass at all for video. Video is not expected to be as sharp as people only pay attention to things in focus, and everything is so dynamic. That being said, if you want your lens to double as photo and video, and you have a good camera, please look up DXOmark sharpness ratings. My older Sigma 50 1.4 is perfect for video but is trash for photos.
I'm into photography (hate video because it's such a hassle). I was raised super cheap and hate spending money more than making video, and I've learned there's no such thing as a cheap lens for photo. For video you can get by because things aren't expected to be as sharp. I shoot on the Canon 5Ds, and I've noticed all my older lenses are not sharp at a 1:1 crop (it's a 50MP sensor..). After some investigation DXOMark lists perceptual MP for each lens tested on a 5DsR. The sharpest canon lens to date is only 45MP (not 50!) at a price of $7000. Most of the L class lenses range from 30-35MP res, and most of the regular lenses range from 18-23MP. So if you're shooting for sharpness, note the quality of your shot really depends on the glass! A lot of my old lenses are not sharp and now I hate them. Upgrading to a 16-35 f4L and a 70-200 f2.8L II. My older Sigma 50 1.4 is only 18MP and is severely disappointing at a 1:1 crop. It holds up at around a 1:2 crop (but is still soft).
Great tips Josh - thank you!
Yo, thanks. I've been so confused and disappointed at the quality of video on my canon t3i. Lots of noise and damn near impossible to focus... I've never been much of a gear junkie, either... But feel that the body is solid enough. Might be worth investing in a sharper lens. It sure would be nice to be able to test it out to begin with!
Okay, so you recomment to buy good lenses ? In another words buy expensive lens?cheap lenses dont give you a good photo shapr like expensive one? Just for photoshop? And for videos you dont need expebsive lens right? Ot I miss understood?
Excellent video. You not just talk about what each lens is for, you actually show examples and tell us how far the subject is from the camera, the background and so on. I find too few reviews do this, which is very important to know as most of us are working in small spaces. Thanks!
Sean I need to have a conversation with you about the choice between the t6i and the 70d .. How can we talk about that
Your videos are always really slick and you transmit enormous enthusiasm, but the items like this where you demonstrate so clearly "what" you're talking about really work for me as a novice.
Got a question, I do up close nail video's where you need to see every detail. I have a canon 70d. What would be the best lens for that? I just got this camera and am learning it. Not sure I like the stock lens. It does pretty great but not as focused in as I would like. I need a good lens that zooms in really nicely and clear. Thanks
3140Babygirl 50mm
shorab hossain Thanks
wc baby :*
Depends on what camera you have. If it's apsc crop sensor, I would go for he nifty fifty :)
I love this channel bro, it's the real deal. I appreciate your thoroughness/research, and ability to communicate potentially confusing topics/terms in super simple terms (i.e. saying "cool blurry effect" instead of bokeh). Really helpful. I just ordered some gear based on the past few videos I've seen and am feeling confident about it which is always a good thing!
i have cooking channel i have canon 700d which lens i should buy Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens or Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens ?
Which lens did you choose ?
?????
In 9 minutes this is one of the most educational videos I have seen on RUclips
I want the Canon 10-18mm IS STM so bad
Try to save up and get it! Its really worth it!
Kristian I feel you
Thank you! Your videos are incredibly helpful and so good!
we are confuse 50mm or 24mm for 700D
Your videos are so helpful, especially to someone like me just starting on RUclips. Thank you
I literally stopped the video and ordered the 24 mm HAHHAHA
Gulsen Melda that’s what I use!
Gulsen Melda then you regretted after watching full video ?
i love your videos. Your an amazing youtuber and your extremely helpful when ever I need a tech question answered. Keep up the amazing work and never stop because you have an amazing talent for making videos!
The canon 50mm f1.8 stm is NOT QUITE AT ALL! Just bought it its very noisy
Deja Mitchell not quite what?
@Mario Olivier 50mm with a STM motor is as noisy as one without the STM motor, IT'S NOISY so if you want quiet focus the DO NOT buy the 50mm
Deja Mitchell yours is, had mine for years and it’s quiet as hell
To think this vid was done 7years back, beats me. You guys are videography gods 👍
I have a canon t6i is there a lens for both myself and background to be clear? Also what lens for nail looks designs and demos.
This video should help ruclips.net/video/IO-yiQavM2U/видео.html
any lens just stop down to like f/7 or thereabouts. I'm guessing a macro lens for nail tutorials
awesome stuff, got my subs sir 😎 love these tips on youtube gear!
I bought the 24mm lens based off of your recommendation ( I LOVE your videos) and when I film the lens auto focusing is picked up by my rode mic throughout the entire video. What am I doing wrong?
Alexandra Beuter Probably nothing, but what is your mic?
My rode mic was wayyy too sensitive at the default setting. Bringing the sensitivity way down in the camera settings helped a lot. The audio records pretty quiet but we turned it up when editing and it sounded great.
Nice video. I bought the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 to replace my kit 18-135 f/3.5. Excited for the much lower aperture and overall better quality. I am definitely interested in the 10-18 for vlogging!
What camera was used in this video?
Nelson Rodriguez canon 70d I think
I just purchased the Canon 1.8 lens, and I wanted to come on here to look at some reviews. I stumbled on your video and I gotta say I really enjoyed it! Thanks for going so in depth and making sure every point was made. Awesome video!
I have a Canon 1200D
Would 24mm STM work?
Mine doesn't autofocus in videos... at least not that i know of..
It does not work, because of kit lens . I think.... )
The lens will fit the camera, so yes! 1200d can take both EF and EFS lenses... The fact you don't have auto focus in video mode is down to the camera :)
TheSuda which means it would work normally right?
in photos autofocusing it would the same job as in another camera right?
Yes the autofocus works just as normal when taking photos! I got the EFS 24mm at Christmas - I have a 550d (quite old!) so mine doesn't autofocus in video mode either... You can fit any EF or EF-S lens to your 1200d and they will all autofocus normally when taking photos! (The STM lenses find focus faster, and are quieter, than older lenses) So you're good to go! :)
These videos are so helpful! I love that you use them instead of just talking about them!
I really don't know anything about filming, but I'm shooting all of my videos with a g7x mark ii and would the 10-18mm be compatible with my camera? Can someone answer this for me?
No, your camera has a fixed lens, you need an interchangeable lens camera to do that.
YOLO Ciber & Papelería Thanks dude appreciate it
Really good video. Thank you very much. I have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens and sometimes it is a pain because I don't have auto-focus...
I'm trying to find a good lens for the 700d for vlogging please help!!!
P.s has to be cheap😂😂
shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-s-10-18mm-f45-56-is-stm-refurbished?searchTerm=canon%2010-18
10-18mm refurb with 1year warranty at 170$
Ahh thank you your videos have been so so helpful! I'm trying to figure out new camera equipment for my birthday, so I've been watching your face all week haha
your face is green, just saying
Be careful, you wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Hes an alien
Thanks for the continued insights Sean. You're genuinely helpful and its appreciated!
Exactly what I needed! Thank you
thanks Sean!Soon I get my SL2, and getting ready to up level my youtube and social media game. keep it up!
Thanks Sean for this video and all of your videos. Just began youtubing and this is a huge help in deciding which equipment to buy with so many options out there. Your videos are concise with quality information. Please keep making them!
What a great bunch! I've owned all of these lenses for a good 4 months now and I totally agree!! What an excellent choice!! If you've got more money I defiantly recommend the 70-200 f4L for a telephoto! It's my favourite !!
totally agree, I own 2 out the 3 and let me tell you the pancake lens is just amazing, i barely take it out of my camera
Good to know! I have a 50mm and it's amazing in certain instances but SUPER annoying how far away you have to be sometimes. I may get that lens one day, didn't even know about it until just now. Plus it's obviously small so less attention grabbing in public I'm guessing.
Oh men I highly recommend the 24mm lens is great and very affordable
Question of the day answer: Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS II or STM
Not really for Vlogging (except you are/want to seem weird) but I looked down on this lens for no reason, got really nice shots of out of reach Ornaments on Architecture and moving animals like Birds or Rabbits. Though the new STM is nicer, a second hand IS II for around 100 Euros/Dollars is also money well spent. Surprisingly good results for a budget lens, only downside APSC only.
really want that 10-18 thanks Sean!
You have a great voice that people can listen too. I enjoyed this video and look forward to watching more.
finally someone showing difference and not just taking about lenses! great video man! subscribed and liked!
This is such a video has been so helpful! I’ve done a lot of research on lenses for my canon t6i and this has been the most useful! Thank you so for your informative content!
I like how you put thing in short and to the point videos, well done Sir! Thanks for not wasting my time! 👍🏼
Wow, thank you for the awesome explanation. Especially the distances (in-front & background) required to make the 50mm effective.
Can't believe this video is 3 yrs old, but the info is still relevant and the products are as well too. Good job.
Good information. I have shot with the "nifty fifty" for years. I have an older version. How does this newer one focus? It looks like they improved it a LOT! Previously, it really had a hard time in low light.
You have taught me a lot about lens in under 10 minutes than all the other videos I've watched on RUclips combined. They talked a lot but said nothing that a novice like me would immediately understand. Therefore, I HAVE to subscribe to your channel. Your energy is infectious and I was hooked from the beginning to the end. I'm picking up the Canon 80D today (Black Friday) and I am also picking up your recommendation of the Canon EF-S 24. Thank you so much. Now onto your lighting videos. Happy Thanksgiving!
As always a great video, thank you so much!
I have all three lenses. I use the 24 mm the most but the 50mm looks the best on camera but the camera needs to be far away but when you do that it looks amazing.
I just start using the Yongnuo 35mm f2.0 lens, and it's perfect to begginers its Cheapers and the quality it's awesome, I recommend!.
thanks for your videos Man!!
Hi from Colombia!!!
Thanks for the help! Awesome video 👍🏻👍🏻
I have the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens and still have problems with AF being too loud. 🙈
Great video. Thank you! I have all these lenses with my 80D and it's nice to see how they work and how to apply them properly with my videos.
congratz on 50k well earned thx for the content u produce
Wow! I have finally found a site that explains what lenses can actually do! Thanks Sean--this is awesome!!!
Thank you so much. The info on your channel is the best. So underrated.
I have a Canon SL2 with an 18-55mm lens, since the 18-55mm covers both the 24mm and the 50mm all I need is the 10-18mm to have it covered.
I've watched a ton of your videos. You've taught me a lot and now I can make my RUclips channel look professional! Thanks man!
just used your link to get the 24mm lens investing in my youtube channel!! been watching all of your videos its helping me for sure to grow as a youtuber!
I clicked on this where I’m shopping for a new lens but now I’m even more interested in your 🎤 🎙mic! Compared to the videos I watched prior to yours I was blown away at the amazing audio quality! I normally would never notice audio but yours really stands out to me! I’m hoping you have it linked in your description box! Because I’m about to go look.
Finally, been waiting so long for the next one Sean!! :D
BOOM! :-)
Your videos have been incredibly helpful. I’ve literally just followed them step by step to build my setup. I’m really excited about being able to get great video to my constituents.
I'm rocking the 18-55 and 70-300 and it's good. I like the 10-18 mm idea
The video is so useful. I want to know which lens is prefer to vlog
Sean, you've done it again! Another super helpful video! Thank you!
This is one of my favorite channels. Thank you think media for the awesome videos !
A really powerful video for me just starting off since I am set on a T6i. Thanks a bunch, this has made my day.
Hi can someone asnwer my question, does canon 60D work with the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens ? Refer back to the video, he said the 24mm lens only work with crop sensor camera. tq
I have the 50mm, 18-55mm and I just got the 10-18mm for vlogs 😁 and I like all of them 😍
Dude this video is so convenient thank youuuu !
dude always has some really SMART advice on getting better video and shots for less cash!!!
