Hard to believe this came out just one year after When Harry Meet Sally (that Ashleigh reacted to last month). Such drastic different genre films, yet I'm pretty sure there's a scene in Misery where you can see a video cassette of Sally in the background of a store.
First OMG I’m officially hooked on your reviews and have been BINGING LIKE CRAZY!! Such a great movie!! Had an oral presentation college class where occasionally we would break off into pairs and reenact scenes from our favorite movies…100% chose Misery with my buddy Mike. He agreed to “let me hobble him” if he got to “bash my brains in with a pig statue” SO MUCH FUN! :-) Also…. Kathy Bates is Queen!!! 👑 And you’ve probably seen James Caan in memes from Elf. He plays the bio dad and is a minor role in the “angry elf” scene. If not that’s definitely one to watch in December 😁
There has been a lot of talk about a remake of this film the last few years and lots of people say the reason that hasn’t happened is because Kathy Bates and James Caan are irreplaceable.
In order to make the movie now there will have to be a transsexual, homosexual, 3 different minorities and lesbian in the script before it gets cleared to be made. Those are the standards of today.
ABSOLUTELY. Don't be fooled by the reputation of Rambo. That comes from the terrible sequels. First Blood was a classic. Supposedly the book was better and Stalone watered down the message a bit. But still great. Maggie Mae Fish just released a video essay on it a few days ago.
This is actually an outstanding choice. Everyone hears Rambo and they think mindless action movie (nothing wrong with that i enjoy them myself) but this is so much more.
@@kemmdog4444 Fun, sure, but totally different from the smart original. Kind of like Rocky. The first one is smart. The others are fun. Until Creed, which was basically a remake of the original and a return to form.
True story. Misery was the first movie I took my now-wife to back in college. I refuse to call it our first date. Her friend bailed on going that night and I was a last-minute fill in. We went to Dances with Wolves the following week and I call that our first date. We're married 28 years this month.
I picked up the book "Misery" in hardback at an airport during a layover, could not out it down, finished it in the flight. I saw the movie in theaters when it opened. Kathy Bates was the perfect Annie. She's always great. As others have said Fried Green Tomatoes and Titanic have not mad characters portrayed by Kathy.
I remember seeing this in the theater. During the "hobble" scene, in a packed theater, the whole audience gasped and cried out in horror and the reaction to that scene lingered for about a good two minutes. When the sheriff is shot, in addition to the reactions of shock, you could just feel the energy go out of the audience. This movie was so incredibly well done, and I'll say it, movies of this caliber aren't made anymore. It seems that all we get are superhero vehicles, sequels, remakes and agenda pieces.
Maybe for good reason? I'm not trying to be a smartass. It's one of the reasons why spooky movies aren't made that often: if every movie that was released month after month had nothing but jump scares, then people would get used to them. I'd point out Saw was sorta in the same genre, but frankly I'm no fan of Stephen King, nor his books/movies, and I'd be content to leave his works in their own genre. Saw was scary horrific. Stephen King's movies are just twisted drama (when it is plausible reality) or twisted fantasy to me. My point to ragging on King is that I don't really consider his work to be HORROR. Twisted yes, but not creepy at least not in the traditional sense. My brother LOVES Stephen King and he says it's because no film maker can adequately adapt his stories to film.
@@Leon-wz1js I wasn't referring to movies of that genre. I was saying that movies of this quality are no longer made. The list that I came up with is what we seemingly get all the time. The real tragedy is that I'm betting that there are hundreds of scripts sitting on shelves and in boxes gathering dust that would make absolutely fantastic films with the right resources behind them. But studios are only content to follow the money and shovel out the same old, same old year after year.
I used to watch Misery so many times, every time I loved it and I still love the movie. As I will never get tired to rewatch it... the suspense works so perfectly that I can still be in tension for some of the most intense scenes of the movie.
Fun fact: In the novel, when the hobbling scene happens, Annie actually cuts off Paul's feet with an axe, and then immediately cauterized the wounds with a propane torch. Also, in the movie, the hobbling scene was done without CGI effects, as CGI in 1990 was still not the greatest. Prosthetic legs of James Caan were made, and they were filled with gelatin and PVC pipe, along with hinges in the ankles.
I’m glad you brought this up, there are many instances where serious elements of Stephen King adaptations even the most popular, had graphic material cut
Cathy Bates crushes EVERY role she plays. In my opinion, she's the most underrated, under appreciated, incredible actress... possibly of all time! She really made the movie!
She did such a great job of turning the crazy on and off. There are characters (and everyday people) who just walk in crazy and there are the sociopaths who do crazy things but act like it's a normal day. But then you have ones like Kathy portrayed in "Misery" where the psycho switch goes on and off. Such a great job and very scary.
Kathy Bates and Toni Colette are two of the greatest actresses who rarely get the awards they deserve. I'm glad Kathy got an Oscar for a horror performance because it happens so rarely!
I love the bit at the end, when the waitress stops to tell Paul she's his "Number 1 Fan", and you can see him trying so hard to be polite while at the same time he's struggling not to vomit.
James Caan's most famous role was Sonny (Sandino) Corleone in the first two Godfather movies. He also was in the tear jerker ABC TV movie Brian's Song. He was also in the very underrated Rollerball, a dystopian science fiction movie that actually was dead accurate in too many ways.
"El Dorado" (1966) a great western was one of his (James Caan) first appearences... Regarding Kathy Bates: please take a look to "Fried Green Tomatoes" (1991)...
While I recognize The Godfather was a good movie, I wouldn't say it's Caan's "most famous" movie, because he didn't star in it. The two I think of as starring in it are Brando and maybe Pacino. Mostly Brando (the title IS Godfather and not Sonny). Whereas Caan starred in the other two movies you mentioned. I agree Rollerball is underrated.
It's even worse in the novel. Instead of breaking his legs, she chops one of his legs off and cauterizes it with a blowtorch and then later cuts off his thumb
@@carpetfluff35 yeah like The Godfather, Brian’s Song, Rollerball, A Bridge Too Far etc... I liked him in the movie El Dorado with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum.

Also, this movie was directed by Rob Reiner, Carl Reiner's son, who got his big break in show business as Meathead in All in the Family. He also directed The Princess Bride. One of his other movies you should see is Spinal Tap.
And Stand By Me (more Stephen King)
😳😳😳 I had no idea this was Rob Reiner... 😳😳😳
Hell YES on Spinal Tap!!!!
And A Few Good Men
Hard to believe this came out just one year after When Harry Meet Sally (that Ashleigh reacted to last month). Such drastic different genre films, yet I'm pretty sure there's a scene in Misery where you can see a video cassette of Sally in the background of a store.
I saw this back in the theater and when the hobbling scene came the collective reaction from the audience is something I'll never forget.
Yes, I admit it. My hands flapped and I went "OOOOOOOOOOOH!" when I saw the notification. 🤣😅
❤️❤️😂😂
"I'm gonna vomit."
Honey you got a big storm comin'.
First OMG I’m officially hooked on your reviews and have been BINGING LIKE CRAZY!!
Such a great movie!! Had an oral presentation college class where occasionally we would break off into pairs and reenact scenes from our favorite movies…100% chose Misery with my buddy Mike. He agreed to “let me hobble him” if he got to “bash my brains in with a pig statue”
SO MUCH FUN! :-)
Also…. Kathy Bates is Queen!!! 👑
And you’ve probably seen James Caan in memes from Elf. He plays the bio dad and is a minor role in the “angry elf” scene. If not that’s definitely one to watch in December 😁
"Oh his leg bones are gonna heal all wrong"
Pass the popcorn, I'm gonna enjoy her reaction in about 5 minutes. lol
The scene where she breaks his ankles, the most shocking part of the movie, was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
I would have to agree
Yeah, but beyond that and the typewriter fight scene (which I always laugh through, especially the sweep kick move)...its kinda slow.
In the book she cuts off his feet

"Kathy Bates 'crushed' it". Great double entendre!
THANK YOU FOR SEEING IT.
There has been a lot of talk about a remake of this film the last few years and lots of people say the reason that hasn’t happened is because Kathy Bates and James Caan are irreplaceable.
Absolutely no remake. This is perfect
@@awkwardashleigh season 2 of castle rock is a prequal to this movie
In order to make the movie now there will have to be a transsexual, homosexual, 3 different minorities and lesbian in the script before it gets cleared to be made. Those are the standards of today.

Have a look at the original Rambo "First Blood" as it deals with PTSD from a Vietnam Vet coming come and dealing with all the hate towards him.
ABSOLUTELY. Don't be fooled by the reputation of Rambo. That comes from the terrible sequels. First Blood was a classic. Supposedly the book was better and Stalone watered down the message a bit. But still great. Maggie Mae Fish just released a video essay on it a few days ago.
The sequels are fun.
@@Sam_on_RUclips You’re not wrong.😁
True story. Misery was the first movie I took my now-wife to back in college. I refuse to call it our first date. Her friend bailed on going that night and I was a last-minute fill in. We went to Dances with Wolves the following week and I call that our first date. We're married 28 years this month.
I guess if you ever threaten to leave, Misery showed her what to do
I picked up the book "Misery" in hardback at an airport during a layover, could not out it down, finished it in the flight. I saw the movie in theaters when it opened. Kathy Bates was the perfect Annie. She's always great. As others have said Fried Green Tomatoes and Titanic have not mad characters portrayed by Kathy.
'I'm also a nurse.'
'Oh, that's good.'
Yeah, it's not good. It's reaaaally not good.... 😐
Well, at first, it was good. Until she went psycho.
Misery is one of my favorite King adaptations. I am immensely glad that you liked it.
"Dolores Claiborne". Also based on a novel by King. But this time Cathy gets to be the "hero"...
I like Dolores Claiborne more than Misery
I remember seeing this in the theater. During the "hobble" scene, in a packed theater, the whole audience gasped and cried out in horror and the reaction to that scene lingered for about a good two minutes.
When the sheriff is shot, in addition to the reactions of shock, you could just feel the energy go out of the audience. This movie was so incredibly well done, and I'll say it, movies of this caliber aren't made anymore. It seems that all we get are superhero vehicles, sequels, remakes and agenda pieces.
Ari Aster and Denis Villeneuve tho
And CGI.
@@hippychikforever very true.
Admit it, when she said "if I hear bones cracking, I'm going to vomit". Everyone who has seen the movie had an evil grin on our face. 🤣
**whistles innocently**
Fun fact: In the novel, when the hobbling scene happens, Annie actually cuts off Paul's feet with an axe, and then immediately cauterized the wounds with a propane torch.
Also, in the movie, the hobbling scene was done without CGI effects, as CGI in 1990 was still not the greatest. Prosthetic legs of James Caan were made, and they were filled with gelatin and PVC pipe, along with hinges in the ankles.
Nice! We love a good Fun Fact!
I’m glad you brought this up, there are many instances where serious elements of Stephen King adaptations even the most popular, had graphic material cut
Also, there's no reason to use CG for such a simple effect. They still use practical effects for shots like that.
yeah, like the cutting off of the thumb with an electric knife when he complains the typewriter is dropping letters.
@@kobeanderson6718 except movies like Pet Sematary where they upped Jud’s death by like a thousand
But maybe they could have had the apparition saying it, before it cut back to show she was someone else.
James Caan plays Wil Ferrell's Father in the movie ELF.

While I recognize The Godfather was a good movie, I wouldn't say it's Caan's "most famous" movie, because he didn't star in it. The two I think of as starring in it are Brando and maybe Pacino.
