Deadpool and Deathstroke may seem like very similar characters, but was Marvel's Merc with a Mouth truly a shameless rip-off from DC's Deathstroke? Did Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza intentionally set out to make a carbon copy of Slade Wilson when they created Wade Wilson? Or is it possible that the whole thing was a crazy coincidence and Deadpool's likeness to Deathstroke is completely unrelated or perhaps even subconscious? A lot of questions here, so let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I think Deadpool is a parody of Deathstroke kinda like how Austin Powers is a parody of James Bond, except differentish...
I thought The Same thing 😂
Not really cause back in tiem marvel was trying get that audience back then cause dead pool was a lot darker back then
@@justinrobertson9116 yeah but he's still funny in the comics.... But I think even now he is dark but he's always funny
I'd say more a comparison of Frankenstein and the hulk
Very well said!
Look, guys. I don't even like Deadpool that much, but I haven't found a ton of evidence that says he's a rip-off of Deathstroke other than people quoting the same interview with Nicieza for many years. There's nothing for me that strongly says one story is more true than the other. It's really just one person's word over another at this point, but I think Liefeld's story has some credibility to it.
Plus, the fact that Deadpool is too similar to Deathstroke to be a coincidence isn't actually evidence that he was an intentional rip-off. That sounds more like a conspiracy theory.
Keep an open mind, and, most importantly, do your own research. Don't just take what I say or what anyone else says as fact in this matter. Just because the internet has written about how Deadpool was a shameless rip-off of Deathstroke for years now doesn't make it true. Argument by assertion is a logical fallacy. Just keep an open mind is all.
***** Aw, you don't like Deadpool? Why not? :(
Sabrina The Traveller Just not my cup of tea is all.
I do believe it's a coincidence that Deadpool and Deathstroke are similar, but I also think it's possible that there could have been some communication between the creators of these two characters. Certainly Deathstroke inspired the creation of Deadpool, but the two characters aren't completely like each other and therefore Deadpool isn't a ripoff. I also must point out that these are two of my favorite characters in comics because both are great at what they do, and I find both to be very entertaining in their own way because they are unpredictable.
*****
Oh, okay. I'll admit I did like him better before he became really popular. I think I can see where you're coming from. Amazing sketch at the beginning btw lol I rewatched it!
both are mercenaries? cool. both use guns and swords?. I can take. but SLADE AND WADE? thats just silly!
Here's a thought: Since he breaks the 4th wall so much, let's turn it around and break the fourth wall from this side and ask *him* if he feels he's a rip off. 8D
Slade Wilson
Wade Wilson
Yes he is. Case closed.
+142doddy
Barrack Hussein Obama
Saddam Hussein
Same person. Case closed.
he did say the do creater had a little bit of inspiration but mainly suppose to be a copy of wolverine
+Nicholaskgaming213 A "little" bit?
Other than the fact he heals, he is nothing at all like Wolverine.
Deadpool is more successful
People say that Deadpool was a parody of Deathstroke.
That seems like the most obvious answer to me.
***** i agree too :)
neo mccarron i've seen shorter names
That's because he is.
Marvel even said he was
Actually, he's a rip off of Spider-man and Wolverine....
and Deathstroke.
No, only deathstroke
DeadCry ... and Spider-man, and Wolverine.
Roper122 *ONLY*
Roper122 spiderman isnt insane nor funny. Wolverine is serious
Roper122 deathstroke has healing factor aswell
Both are right. His powers, backstory, mask, and all around personality are very unique to him with some clear inspiration from Spider-Man and Wolverine (I used to legit think he was a murderous Spider-Man fanboy when I first saw him). However, his look, name, and using guns and swords were probably not a rip off of Slade at all. A rip of is when you take someone's idea, and claim it's your own. But considering Deadpool was intended to be a throw away character, it's fairly obvious that the similarities were to parody Deathstroke. It makes sence, if they never truly intended to keep him, it makes sence for then to parody a character from a rival comic book that they enjoyed.
Error Macro A very reasonable conclusion. Thanks!
***** no, thank you! You are an amazing RUclipsr! I absolutely love your videos!
wow finally an intelligent responds to the video. No deathstroke = no deadpool is what i believe
Bat man not nessecarily, but he would be very very VERY different. Wouldn't be as comedic, would have a different name (not Wade Wilson) and would probably be a cold hard villain
Error Macro xtu
Maybe it started out "unintentional" that ended up being "intentional"....much like Deadpool's personality, he is intentionally a killer, a mercenary, a psychopath, but also unintentionally noble, funny and heroic....His conflicting origin is what brought the character to life, and his conflicting nature perhaps is what sustains him throughout the years. ^_^
Gerard Arceo That seems to be probable I think.
Yeah I agree... like they made him based on spidey and Logan and then realized he was similar to death stroke and basically memed it by naming him wade instead of slade
Marvel does this a lot.
Black Cat came after Catwoman
Hawkeye came after Green Arrow
But a few go the other way too.
Wasp came before Bubblebee
Galactus came before Impeiex
But stand back and take a look at it. The ideas in the world aren't infinite and if an idea is good it's bound to be had again in a slightly different way. It could also be said that Deathstroke is just an evil Captain America. It doesn't mean they're rip offs just that they're similar ideas.
***** I think it was Joe Simon who said something like "If an idea is good, then it's okay to use it at least 8 times." I'm totally paraphrasing here -- and I could also be attributing the quote to the wrong person -- but I've always liked that quote.
Namor the Submariner came before Aquaman......just saying
DC's Red Bee (a female insect-themed superheroic member of the Freedom Fighters) came years before Marvel's Wasp. So here we go again...
Wade Wilson
Slade Wilson
lol lolson
Love the idea of a sketch at the beginning
a very comedic way to introduce the video
Comic Taco Productions Thanks! I had a lot of fun with it.
*****
Productions ehh!?
Just a lot of stuff being produced between the three of us apparently. Haha
*****
This needs to happen more!
The Godless-Nerd I'm the first person to reply in 2 years so you probably forgot that you commented
The fans of Deadpool really seem to own his being a ripoff, and the not fans of Deadpool really seem to own him being a ripoff. So who are these people in the comments fighting?
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of DP, but I like to keep polished on the comics in my house. Good video, fresh take. Will sub.
You are awesome! Thanks for subbing. - Nali
I'm a fan!:3
Um it's inspired not copied
@@Reuvinn it's stolen
@@leonrussell9607 It's a 5 year old comment but yeah
Obviously some aspects were taken but not all. And I love Deathstroke
I like how people are like "He's so similar it has to be a rip off" Meanwhile, there are TONS of mercinaries in comics, TONS of people in masks in comics, and also a lot of sword and gun users.
Slade Wilson... Wade Wilson... I'm sorry, but that's not even possible.
It literally has to be marvel and DC have been ripping eachother off for years tho
+Bill Nye did you even watch the video
SHINOBIKAZ Duh.
It is technically a rip-off; both have same surnames, same powers, same costumes, and weapons, but i don't mind it at all because they have the same writer and have different stories.
Simplest answer, Rob Liefeld is an untalented hack and if it weren't for his co-creator, Deadpool would have been just another generic early 90's beweaponed anti-hero
He was though. He was originally way too serious. It wasn't until after Liefeld that DP became the jokester that people came to love.
weldonwin truth
weldonwin Not only is Liefeld a no talent hack, he's a known and proven plagiarist.
He actually was a little more serious, with the same grim humor and has been smartass since the beginning
Rob Liefeld is a hack is just trying to cover his ass for ripping off other's ideas... Of course he would walk back Fabian's quote. Additionally, Deadpool wasn't even remotely interesting until well after Liefeld rode McFarlane's coattails to IMAGE when other writers/artists got ahold of him.
I think Deadpool is a rip off of Deathstroke but it doesn't really matter, does it? Either way, I love both characters and i find it hilarious how similar both characters are.
By the way, I loved your introduction to the video! So funny :D
Christine Kim haha, thanks! And I totally agree. It doesn't matter who was a rip-off of whom. It's about whoever/whatever you enjoy reading.
***** I think your theory of it being subconscious is right. And I'm not a deadpool fan and in all honesty I despise the character. Just my opinion doesn't mean he's terrible I just dislike him. Whereas I like deathstroke alot.
Just inspired not ripped off
Deathstroke>Deadpool
Eric A thank you
An homage or a pastiche maybe. Both characters have different personalities when you think about it.
As fun as the stuff about memory and that one quote is, I think you're kind of overlooking the simplest answer here.
Deadpool was created with a Spider-Man design and Wolverine's powers because Spider-Man was easy to draw and Wolverine was popular. This, to me, seems kind of like a no-brainer, and both in terms of design and powerset he really IS closer to Spidey and Wolvie than to Deathstroke. And maybe that's all Liefeld had in mind for him!
Nicieza saw those powers and his backstory and his design and said "Deathstroke!" Rob said "Sure, why not", and Nicieza was the one who came up with the name, which is the most damning thing linking one Wilson to the other (throwing a bit of the patented Marvel name alliteration in there for funsies).
Nicieza's story about calling Rob up on the phone and calling him out and Liefeld admitting may be true, perhaps with Liefeld's "You caught me" simply having been a funny quip with the resemblance being unintentional, or it may be a dramatization, but the important conclusion to draw is that Deadpool has influence from a variety of characters, and by way of his name the conclusion can be drawn that Deathstroke is almost certainly one of them.
Didn't everyone in the 90's have a sword craze going on? Nightcrawler was sporting swords, Shatterstar, Deathstroke, ect ect.
It seems like the comment made in the Nicieza interview has the tone of jest, like they realized it was sort of an indirect copy of Deathstroke but not intentionally. It's easy to dismiss it but the characters name is Wade Wilson, and that's pretty far beyond coincidence and backs up the claim pretty substantially. Lets face it though.... they're both colorful ninjas. Comics have been doing those for years.
I'm really not crazy about Deadpool but I think of him as something that started as a parody and spun out into this massive thing and became his own character. Good video. Looks like you did a lot of leg work on this one.
Lol, so much hate, its hilarious. Anywho, I personally think that Deadpool was indeed based off of Deathstroke. However, while that may have been the original case, he has definitely evolved and grew into a much different character than Deathstroke, even to the point where he has surpassed his ancestor in nerd fame and approval. His refreshing 4th wall breaking and hilarious dialogue are a sharp contrast to Deathstrokes more darker (and wiser) nature. I would not call it a 'ripoff', far from actually. I just think that ideas were taken and improved upon.
Ritty Ratty I agree completely.
+Ritty “Seth” Ratty Not improved Deathstroke is better in my opinion
He was. People that actually read comic books know this. Deadpool was more of an in your face sort of thing by Marvel. That's why they have similar abilities. However, Deathstroke has defeated Deadpool on numerous occasions in the comics.
hahahahahhahahahaha wait
your serious?
I find myself in that same kind of situation all the time. I think I've come up with an original chord combination for a song. I later realize that it was my mind recalling what I heard from another song spliced with a tiny bit of originality to make it my own. I often tweak it further to try and distance it from what I later realized I was inspired by.
In the case of Deadpool they seem to have done the same thing, but instead of tweaking it further to distance it from the thing they were inspired by, they seem to have tweaked it to be more similar.
I always liked the idea that Deadpool was mesh up of Spiderman, and Wolverine though this the first time I head that Punisher also some how made it into the mix. I just always thought t would be easier for Marvel to mesh-up Marvel charters then to try to copy some one else.
...and schrodinger would be like "why not both?"
Tony Stark: "Is it too much to ask for both"
I love these videos. Keep it coming man!
Tony Stark Will do, sir!
yeah, deadpool is cool, but iron man is cooler *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*.
I always thought Deadpool was based on Deathstroke, Spiderman and Jason Voorhees because his face is burned
I loved what you did with the intro. I have yet to even look into the back story of Deadpool so this was very informative. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work!
Jacob King Thanks so much! I'm glad it was helpful in some way.
hes obvious an intentional not ripoff, but spoof, of deathstroke. Wade Wilson/Slade Wilson, both having swords and guns, being mercs, having a healing factor and having some iteration of Death in their name, there is no coincidence here. plus it wouldn't be the first time Marvel had taken something DC made first, and slightly altering it so they could use it.
First time ever commenting on any video say congrats for that. Taking characters putting half a twirl on it and slapping his name on it is Liefeld's bread and butter. Deadpool being his most famous...let us not forget Youngblood who he remixed from his days working on X-Factor, from when Image first started or how about Agent America from when he had another falling out with Marvel during the Heroes Reborn fiasco. Liefeld is a notorious hack (although this is my personal opinion).
Deadpool is an amalgam of many characters, Deathstroke included. He's got Todd McFarland Spiderman look, Snake Eye's weapons and Wolverine's powers.
As Boba Fett said....he's comic sloppy seconds. ;)
I think when you create, you're inspired and fueled by what you've seen, heard, etc. I will give Liefeld the points for the fact that coming up with something original is tough, but come on dude the similarities are WAAAAAAAAY to abundant. He's the luckiest man on Earth, taking no talent and turning into a business. He's the Kardasians to the comic world.
I think, when comparing two characters like Deadpool and Deathstroke (or Superman and Shazam/Capt. Marvel) you should first remove the generic traits that can be given to anybody.
So, for DP and DS you remove the assassin, mercenary, guns and swards/blades. That leaves you with "genetically enhances supersoldier" and then their personal traits and backgrounds. In this regard, you'd have to call them both a "copy" of Capt. America for their non-generic trait. But these terms are still vague enough to overlook.
If that had been done with Fawcett and DC Comics, the super powers would have been ignored and the origins and characters would have been what determined copyrights and trademarks... and we'd have a different story behind Billy Baston's and Clark Kent's media lives.
You know, this reminds me, maybe somebody should do a video on the differences between stereotype, archetype, trope, pastiche and copy for characters. This is probably not up CMC's alley, but somebody should explain the differences.
Benjamin Abruzzo I really think you're right. Sure Deadpool and Deathstroke are similar on the surface, but so are many other characters.
***** thats not the point here....its not just the simularities and the look its also the name...its pretty obvious its a ripoff.... its almost like saying what if marvel made a character like superman (gladiator) and named him stark kent....seems like an intentional rip off to me..maybe even a spoof
Bat man Other than the name Wade Wilson -- which was added to Deadpool late in the game and was said by both creators to be an intentional joke towards Deathstroke -- everything else about the character doesn't feel like a rip-off to me. People keep saying it's obvious, but there's no explicit evidence that says he was specifically and initially created to be a rip-off of Deathstroke. That whole thing sounds like a crazy conspiracy theory that people latched onto for some reason.
Bat man "its pretty obvious its a ripoff.... "
So a well-planned, evil mercenary with both no loyalties to any criminals, but heavy loyalties to his family and a very long streak of revenge towards one very specific team of heroes... a man with a very striking good, if a bit rough, looks and and strategic mind...
That is the same as...
A spontaneous nut-ball, with lot's of loyal people in his life, but who he'd really not care a thing about unless they made some sense in a plot-line in his mind that is really thin and might as well be the latest episode of the Brady Bunch, and has no real specific enemies because if you pay him, he'll kill them all... a man with a messed up face from his cancer and treatments and a lack of train of though that isn't another guys (Madman's).
Yup, I can see them as being exactly the same character. I get them mixed up all the time. Like the time Deadpool's daughter Ravager joined his arch enemies, the Teen titans and The time Deathstroke just sat around eating Mexican food and arguing with himself because he didn't have anything going on.
" its almost like saying what if marvel made a character like superman (gladiator) and named him stark kent...."
Well, Liefeld did have this problem in the 1990s making 20 "superhero teams" that were basically the exactly the same characters over and over again. He called most of them Youngblood, but all his teams had a Wolverine clone and a Deadpool-like clone and a Cable clone and so on. But that's just the one man copying himself.
As for Superman, you are comparing Clark "Kal-El" Kent with Supreme (Rob Liefeld), Mr. Majestic (Wildstorm/DC), Tom Strong, Hyperion (Marvel), Mon-El (DC Comics), Captain Marvel (Fawcett/DC), Sentry (Marvel), Blue Marvel (Marvel), Gladiator (Marvel), Icon (Milestone/DC), Prime (Malibu/Marvel), Mighty Man (Image; the Savage Dragon), Marvelman/Miracleman (Marvel Comics).
Most of these DC sued the pants off or bought in the past. Now it is being accepted that just because you have super powers, you aren't a copy because your personality and background is different.
And you might be right, if, say the Tick came out with a Superman copy called The Caped Wonder, who was a reporter and was named Clark, yes, we would be talking about a rip-off/parody. But remember, Superman didn't fly at first, didn't have eye-beams or x-ray vision at first. And many copies are merely flying strong guys.
And do we really want to list how many assassin, mercenary, guns and swards/blades characters there are? Those are your generic cannon fodder. And "super-soldier" is as near generic and a "really great soldier".
just because the origins are different and thier stories/looks differ... doesnt mean they arent copies. Creators often use past successes as inspiration. Without deathstroke there would be no deadpool.
I personally agree with the combined story you offered. The interview with Nicieza didn't really say that Liefeld did it on purpose. More like a playful or sarcastic "admission" that they laughed at and poked fun at. Like me making a character who happens to be a lot like Cyclops and a friend saying, "So is this Cyclops, or what?" We would shrug and laugh it off. I think the similarities are just a coincidence. They're personalities are just too different.
SennKuro That's kind of where I'm leaning on this one.
That's right! You better agree with me! If you don't I'll... I'll... I don't know. Eat ice cream?
Ummm Scott, we are gonna need another Deadpool episode. You covered one thing (the deadpool/deathstroke thing). THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO DISCUSS.
WE WANT MOAR!
Also thumbs ^
ThexInsidexMan How much more is there? I had a hard enough time trying to find one topic with Deadpool that fits on this show.
You could explore his time spent doing "good things" for selfish reasons for plain old bad merc-for-hire things. The whole anti-hero schtick.
Also, there seems to be confusion among the masses regarding the voices in hsi head.
Also, you could a do a video on comic characters who break the 4th wall, in general.
Boom. Good ideas free of charge, from worst to best, thought of in about a minute, WHILE eating some chili, I might add!
Eh, I mean, Deadpool just isn't interesting to me. Wouldn't you rather have me make videos I'm legitimately enthusiastic about?
Fair enough, to each their own, I guess. To me he's the best, even if just for his relationship with Wolverine, or Spidey.
Hell the Deadpool and Bob, Agent of Hydra dynamic is pure gold. He's like a hard liquor, because you can't truly appreciate him until you've had all the beers that are the generic comics.
But you're the expert. Regardless keep up the great work!
No we don't.
That intro lol
Nice video, keep up the good work!
I came here for Deathstroke, because I like him more.
And none of you can stop me! >:c
I never made the connection between Deadpool and Deathstroke. They're actually really different from each other. Its like saying Spider-Man is a rip off of Batman because they both lost their parents at some point.
FaceUnreality That is possibly the worst comparison I've ever read
Andre Rebeiro That's the point I'm making. Deadpool and Deathstroke is a really bad comparison.
Andre Rebeiro What about Iron man and batman? both are millonaires that fight crime with their own gadgets
FaceUnreality It''s more like if batman's name was skeeter parker, also had superhuman strength and reflexes, wore a costume very similar is style, and used the same web shooters.
It's mostly in the name (Wade Wilson and Slade Wilson) and choice of weapons. It is also stated, I believe, that Deadpool's symbol is parodied from Spawn's symbol.
I've heard it more than once stated that Deadpool is a parody of Deathstroke for sure. this has been played on a number of times. Also in Batman/Superman Annual (I wanna say 2) Kelly had DP show up as one of many Deathstrokes in that issue. Though the compairson brings up the fact that Deadpool is the better man. DP doesn't want to kill kids, has a problem with it. DS just can't kill kids no matter how hard he tries.
Wednesday's Serial Do you have sources to where you heard Deadpool was a parody of Deathstroke? Is it a credible source?
it was annual 1 and a fun issue
***** I mean I know I've read it before, but this isn't so much a "is this a source" issue. This is more of a reading. If something is considered Parody, Satire, or funny at all rests more in the hands of the audience than the initial intent.
That's why the question is really asking if Deadpool was intended to be a rip-off.
***** fair. I hear your two stories, but it's really hard to me to believe Leifeild over anyone for numerous reasons. Plus Nicheza was the writer, continued with the character, and had more to do with him early continuing with this first mini. Also come ON he was named Slade Wilson, that's clearly intentional.
Slade Wilson Wade Wilson come on is dat an coincidence
not really a rip off, more like a spoof of Deathstroke, Wolverine, and Spiderman
Shea Lupkes Definitely not Wolverine
When you consider how similar the 2 characters looked in the early days (Deathstroke now looks a lot more heavily armored) and the whole Slade Wilson Wade Wilson thing, with them both being genetically enhanced mercenaries, I don't really wanna take the side of Rob Liefeld. It seems too obvious that Deadpool was based on Deathstroke.
Amazing videos man! I love how your vids are so organized and worked out.
Ameen Hershey's Thank you so much!
Great intro lol.
Drew Perkins haha, thanks!
I liked the whole thing! Go on guess why, I will give you a clue, look at my name. Have you got? No? Oh, OK then...
This is unrelated to the video but i just want to say your channel is absolutely phenomenal, from the editing, quality, entertaining yet very professional tone. Really good stuff.
deadpool was definitely a rip-off of deathstroke.
How? What do you have to back up your claim
hail hydra can you not see their names
Slade wilson
Wade wilson
@@Cytise91 that's because the person who named deadpool saw how much he lookd like death stroke and just made his name wade Wilson.
@@Cytise91 and its not like dc hates it hell they even made their own dead pool!
hail hydra wtf are you smoking
Deadpool is Marvels Deathstroke, but Deathstroke is DC version of The Taskmaster
Sean Boulton 100% Correct
Truth be told- Deathstroke is a version of Captain America if he had not been frozen. They share the same power base and history getting into the project they were elected for are very much on the same track. Deadpool was created to be more like Spider-Man, Punisher, and Wolverine. Remember that he was created to fight mutants....which having a healing factor weapon using guy will make it more interesting.
I still prefer the serious Deadpool over the break the 4th version. I also prefer Deathstroke over Deadpool.
Does not really matter who is ripping off who....fans will still cosplay, buy figurines and comics, and spend money to see their comic characters. Betcha their will even be a stand alone movie for one of the D characters soon.
Be well all.
Deathstroke and Taskmaster chare the same creator artist, that's where the similarities on the costumes came from
Awesome, perhaps you can make a video about Aquaman being a ''ripoff'' of Namor? Just a suggestion you don't have to do it.
dude
I think Aquaman came first
The Epic Green Mask | Minecraft Gaming not really
Namor came first but it showed aquaman was an atlantean first
***** You really dont know what a rip off is do you
Thx man, finally got that deadpool video out!!!!!
I think you're being way too nice about it it's clear to anybody with a brain that Deadpool is a deliberate ripoff of Deathstroke. with that being said I for one hate the sea and I love Marvel I love Deadpool and I could care less about death stroke. even though originally Deadpool is a deliberate ripoff of Deathstroke they have done so much more with Deadpool as far as his personality goes it makes him very unique and very different from Deathstroke
+frankie b ... Why do you hate "the sea", man? :'(
The modern Deadpool grew out to be a very different character from what his so talented creator intended.
Gabriela Moekoe no idea
frankie b
*DC?
XD
Fun fact: Deathstroke can be considered an amalgam between Captain America and Taskmaster form Marvel Comics, Deathstroke has enhanced physical abilities with a kind of super soldier serum just like Cap, and George Pérez is the designer of Taskmaster and Deathstroke, but Taskmaster came out earlier in Avengers# 195 (May 1980), that's why they have similarities on their costumes, even with Cap.
Do you think the human torso skeleton with the horse skull on the pike in the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy is Beta Ray Bill? Or just an Easter Egg to him? Or just a coincidence?
Deadpool is a fuckin rip-off. Deathstroke was created first. That's your answer. The fact that both Slade and Wade use guns and swords, along with having other similarities, just makes it obvious.
Even if it's true, they couldn't ever officially admit it.
yeah deathstroke died in the original teen titans TV show
+Elijah Busse no but he is hard to kill, he's been shot through the head with a .50 cal and regenerated, his healing factor isn't as good as Deadpool, he also doesn't have Death trying to get his D like deadpool does.
I know nothing of comics and don't really care to, but it seems obvious to me that the character is inspired by him, but is nothing like him in practice.
Inspired by and rip-off aren't the same. One is trying to deceive the public by taking something and calling it your own, the other is you taking a liking to something a reinventing it. As far as I know, the latter is the only way you can create anything as a human creature. Perhaps parody?
John NoNameGibbon
Definitely agree with you. Dc and Marvel get inspiration from each other throughout their history in the business and I think calling it a rip off is very disrespectful. It's an homage and a sign of respect to the competition in my opinion. It's like they say "Imitation is the highest form of flattery."
***** Exactly. I'm not saying they stink, I just don't want people to think I'm the Lord of Comics. I know little. But I have an opinion. And it is interesting.
honestly this is a very interesting debate, especially since even the newer writers make nods to this "fact" in canon (I.e sabertooth in volume 34 of the 2013 deadpool run), which honestly just makes me think of Marvel's whole fluid time theme (y'know, from the Ultimates comics where they turned Galactus good) where a large enough event in the present makes ripples into the past. Either way this was a fascinating thing to learn as always with your videos.
DEATHstroke, DEADpool, Slade, Wade...enough evidence for me ;)
+greatperformer88 same surename aswell
Slade Wilson, Wade Wilson
Max Waghorn Yeah, forgot the surname :P
Mew Ace Yep, missed the surname
The Slade/Wade Wilson was supposed to be a joke by his creators but then other people found the other stuff.

CONSTANTINE VIDEO CONSTANTINE VIDEO CONSTANTINE VIDEO
Yet another great NerdSync video. Very well thought out.
I like the effort you put into both sides of the argument. A lot of people find that hard to do, but you present both sides so well....I can't decide which side to lean on!
Robert Wilson Thank you for the kind words!
Hope you cover something like "How is Deadpool able to break the 4th wall" or something.
Because deadpool
+corwindotsonful oh that's good👍🏻👍🏻
+nOnOy borbun Nanomachines
+nOnOy borbun I think Deadpool might just be crazy, instead of breaking the 4th wall. There are often times that characters are confused who he is talking to, he also has multiple voices that speak to him. is it that absurd to look at Deapool and think his cancer progression/regression is always messing with his mind?
When he does break the 4th wall, could we not assume that he is guessing based on observations? Or that things from his perception are being reflected in the comics?
If he really is breaking the 4th wall, perhaps it's a similar answer though. His cancer attacks his brain, and regresses just as fast. This makes his mind work differently than many other characters. This could break the illusion that he's just a character, and he know is. This could give him insight in to our world, just because of it. All in all, if he /really/ is breaking the 4th wall, it's because the creators want him to, and that's just how it is.
The only way that explanation couldn't be said was if he's crazy. So I stick with crazy.
Probably wrong, but that's okay.
TheCaliger That's actually a valid point. Though, I did hear one time that he does break 4th walls, as stated by the creators, just that I wanted to know if Nerdsync can actually determine of find any interviews or write ups from the creators themselves.
the names I think show off the most. My take is that they aimed to make a throw-away villain that they could take some liberties with, while taking inspiration from Spiderman/Wolverine. As a creator you often don't see where the inspiration for your works comes from. I think Deadpool was created and just happened to look like Deathstroke because they both loved the Teen Titans comics. I think the similarities in his character were added more to mock that they had accidentally created a similar character rather than to blatantly try and make a Deathstroke clone. It is easy to think this though, because Marvel has had a history of making copycat characters (Aquaman/Neymor, Black Cat/Catwoman, Every failed Superman clone/Superman) and even the X-men shares similarities with a DC Comic that was created before it. Both characters are fan favourites for very different reasons and have evolved to become distinct entities.
I think that in a way, all comic characters are based off of another. Take for example Superman. Superman himself had four similar characters created to him whether it was Shazam, Captain Mar-Vell, Hyperion and The Sentry based on power sets. Some have very similar backstories, others have similar designs. I honestly think without Superman, we would have never seen Batman, Wonder Woman, The original Flash, The original Human Torch, Namor, Captain America and the original Captain Marvel.
Michael King Everything is a remix.
dont forget Icon, his black counterpart.
A character remarkably similar to Superman came out in a series of novels beginning in 1912. That character was John Carter from the Barsoom series. John was a human who found himself transported to Mars (Barsoom). On Mars, he becomes a super man. He had incredible strength, speed, and could leap great distances with a single bound.
The original Superman concept was a bald villain with mental powers, but he was later re-imagined by his creators into the gaudy circus strongman with the "s" on his chest and the red cape. His powers, with the possible exception, of being bulletproof were identical to those of John Carter. Most people credit superman as the first modern costumed super powered adventurer (brightly costumed and in comics, yes), but John came first.
You know, I've never really cared about the DP and DeathStroke arguments, but an idea just fueled my head again.
What about Black Spider and Spiderman? His original appearances arent so give away, but in Young Justice he is modeled so sleek and nimble, and his powers and costume are too similar.
If only Deadpool, had actually been thrown away. Hate Deadpool. JUST MY OPINION.
I believe it's both. McFarlane teased Liefeld and Liefeld set out to deliberately create a masked character similar to Spiderman but still vastly different, and as he was a huge fan of Teen Titans he loved Deathstroke's level of badassness. He combined the looks of Spiderman and Desthstroke to create a New character, gave him Wolverine's upgraded healing factor and Slade's fighting skills.
To be fair, isn't Deathstroke basically a rip-off of Taskmaster?
OHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+MorbidMist Aw shit. Taskmaster was made in May of 1980 and Deathstroke's first appearance was in December of the same year.
+MorbidMist Nope,they are nothing alike.
Isn't Taskmaster just Batman with powers?
+Bromystic no because he now more than batman and can keep writing copying batmans moves
As a designer it happened to me a couple of times, you have a great idea for a logo, and then someone tells you it looks like the Warner Brothers logo, or something like that, and you go: " Oh yeah, I haven't noticed it". I think it was unintentional, it was just a matter of visual references.
RamoneCelso I did a similar thing in college. I was playing around with making 8-bit music, and my roommate was binge-watching Futurama at the time. Subconsciously, my first and only 8-bit song ended up sounded exactly like the Futurama theme. I didn't notice it at all until I played it for my friend and he immediately recognized it and asked if I was just doing an 8-bit cover of that theme. It was disheartening because I thought I was really onto something.
I hate deadpool for 2 reasons one is he is way overpowered. He can't die, just plainly cannot die which makes him boring. Second I do find him a rip-off of Slade because they are very similar and some other evidence. Plus I loooove Deathstroke being why he's my current picture. Oh and I guess three reasons because I think people way over rate him and like him way to much
I think Liefeld loses the benefit of the doubt when you see his other rip-offs or "homages" which tend to suggest he traced other artists' work without attribution.
Demasx "Suggest" nothing. He's a proven tracer and plagiarist.
I HATE deadpool but I love this video.
Walobolo Fair enough! haha
Me too
I get that he something funny but most of the time ugg
To me, all of this just sounds like Deadpool was their version of Deathstroke mixed with other inspirations, but when they admitted to it in that closing comment, people got upset, so they decided to only reference the other inspirations from that point forward.
I can't see how they're really rip-offs or anything because from what I've seen [from games and cartoons] those characters are completely different in personality. Deadpool is hilarious to watch and brings a sort of life to whatever he's in that Deathstroke doesn't really fulfill to me. if I had to choose between a Deadpool movie or Deathstroke, I'd choose Deadpool hands down, because I know his witty banter and habit of breaking the fourth wall make him much more entertaining to me than Deathstroke ever could.
Dude the opening alone for this video makes it one of your best videos yet, great video as always. Got any ideas now that you finally got Deadpool out of the way ;-)
I loved the opening sequence!
Axomite Thanks, man! I had a lot of fun with it. I miss putting together sketches.
Great video, Scott! Love your channel. Keep 'em coming.
sg61c Will do!
Rip-off? No. But a *parody* of Deathstroke? *Now* we're getting somewhere.
Well when Deadpool was first made, he was all about business like Deathstroke. It was until later when Deadpool became what he is today. So practically, Deadpool is a rip-off considering his creator made him originally nothing but a copy of Deathstroke in the beginning.
Amazing vid. Love your channel.
natureboy nineofour Thanks so much!
You most really hate past Scott, as he is always saying stuff that effects future Scott. It's a good thing your present Scott though, because you don't have to worry about it yet.
***** Past-Scott is just a punk. Haha
It doesn't matter to me, Deadpool is still a great character in his own way. Great video like always man.
Slade wishes he was as interesting as me ;)
Wade Wilson who's wade wilson I only know slade wilson.
Lol
(i like dc more, but like marvel too) wade is like the younger brother of slade that learns from his older brother and becomes better LOL
Love the green mustache on your computer
Funkymonkeybacon Thanks! I expected it to fall off forever ago, but it's persistent.
BEST. SKETCH .EVER.PERIOD

ABHIMANNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*****Yayyyyyyyyyy
***** how do you make your intros to your vids?
Abhimanyu Bhati Like the sketch or you mean the little bumper videos that say NerdSync Productions and Comic Misconceptions?
The bumper
I wouldn't say he's a rip-off, but more of a parody of deathstroke in his character, and spawn in his logo
Hrmm. Considering what I've seen and heard about the whole issue, IMO, its probably likely that at creation the character to become Deadpool was just another generic super ninja mercenary character. Just like any other, but once the name "Deadpool" was applied it triggered a "you know that reminds me of Deathstroke" moment and from that the tribute hidden in his real life name "Wade Wilson" occurred. There isn't anything really similar about the characters except for the generic super ninja mercenary template and the name. You could drop in Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow from GIJoe, as similar source types. Hell, even Cobra Commander is closer to Deathstroke style wise. Its just the Joke name tribute that people believe is the reasoning it must be a rip-off.
Thank you!!!! Wow I thought I was the only one who thought that Deadpool and Deathstroke are not ripoffs of each other
Late to the party, but thought I'd weigh in from the perspective of the Court, where we often have to weigh the credibility of opposing testimony. While it's admirable to give both testimonials the benefit of the doubt, attempt to reconcile them, and even provide apologetics for the discrepancy... most courts would *not* give these testimonials equal weight.
Why?
Two man reasons: Nicieza's account is 1) *against* self-interest; and 2) formally on the record.
Nicieza is disclaiming the originality to the co-creation of Deadpool. It is against his interest to do so both in order to legally defend the claim of creation (if it is a derivative of another work) and in terms of public credit. In law, we give those claims more weight because, logically, there's less incentive to lie if your own testimony goes against your interests.
Additionally, Nicieza is doing so for a printed publication, knowing his account is going to be permanently memorialized in writing and published. It's closer to providing something "in writing" or taking an oath before testifying. By comparison, even if we know panels are recorded, there is an ephemeral nature to them where what happens in a convention room, sometimes stays in the convention room... generally people aren't encouraged to videotape or publish and part of the appeal is that the creators talk on the panel more loosely than if they expect their words to go down in a book or to be published / broadcast on the national news. Compare how creators act on the news vs. a panel and you know it's true... not to mention, panelists lie all the time (though, typically to preserve future revelations).
Whether these differences are formally recognized or not, it's likely the intuitive reason Nicieza's version has more traction than Liedfeld's.
Lastly, Liedfeld's denials aren't without precedent in the industry. Especially if financial remuneration, credit, royalties, rights, or the like are at stake... creators have a long history of calculated claims to protect their interests. Jerry Siegel, for example, put himself into a protracted war with DC by suing and losing in 1948 and continuing to raise the issue even beyond grave through his heirs (the blame IS his because DC WAS willing to play ball, as per Bob Kane, et al).
Unfortunately, once Siegel sues for the rights, DC has to disown him lest give any credence to his claims (until hammering out settlements decades later). However, by the same token, in order to support his own claims, Siegel would forever jealously claim credit for his creation in ways that stretch credibility... and he would be reluctant to credit his CONTEMPORARY influences (he'd credit ancient myth or dead intellectual property, but never the likes of Hugo Danner and Doc Savage only when put in a corner to admit it) or even his documented / proven / known ghost writers.
It's a wonderfully sweet serendipity that his second wife turned out to be the model for Lois Lane and the story gets told and retold as an "argument by assertion"... but interestingly its a narrative that Siegel was completely silent on until starting his second round of lawsuits and negotiations with DC in the 70s... it doesn't mean the story isn't true, but awfully convenient the tale was never once uttered before it was tactical to do so.
So Liefeld may be borrowing a tactic from the playbook of the original superhero creator!
Is DEADPOOL a Rip-Off of DEATHSTROKE?
idk
+Distant Empire. There isn't much evidence to support the claim. IDK is a fair stance. - Nali
+NerdSync haha you know I was joking right xD
Distant Empire. Yep! Haha. - Nali
They are brothers...thats why they have almost the same costumes.
yeah deadpool is a ripoff
Nice! It was cool to hear those direct quotes instead of rumors. I had actually never heard of Deathstroke until people started comparing Deadpool to him. Not really sure where I stand, but there are so many copies of characters between DC and Marvel that it's refreshing to see it done tongue in cheek. I didn't know about the Teen Titans New Mutants connection, though. But I think Rob got a two-in-one with Deathstroke, subconsciously or not. When I first saw Deathstroke with his mask off I thought of Cable. Gray hair, one normal eye. It would be interesting to see what other similarities those two have.
I put Deadpool into the same category as characters such as The Squadron Supreme, characters that are based on characters owned by another company but just different enough to keep from being sued. That being said, DC had a much better case against Marvel for Deadpool than they did against Fawcett for Captain Marvel.
#parodycomiclife
I read in a magazine somewhere that the creators of Deadpool went to DC with the idea of Deadpool being Slade Wilson's brother with him keeping Deadpool on a leash sorta and Deadpool driving Slade crazy.
liefeld has never been a truly honest artist. He's been caught stealing panels time and again, so I wouldn't really trust his story here.
For me, whether or not Deadpool is a "ripoff" of another or multiple character(s) doesn't matter because he's become a new being in his own right anyway. He has his own personality, story, history and has broken his mold to become a fan favorite his own way.
I honestly don't like deadpool, I belive he is a rip off of both Deathstroke and Wolverine
I'm inclined to believe that DP is a "rip off" of DS.
The reasons for the differing stories is simple, it's a legal maneuver. Since DP was suppose to be a "throw away character", but since he's so popular now, Marvel doesn't want any lawsuits from DC. It makes perfect sense.
But similarities between the two are uncanny. And the pun on the name is evident.
Fabian was probably telling the truth initially. Rob later came up with a somewhat convincing cover story.
I don't think the analogy about Stan "the man" Lee being forgetful has much merit. He's an old kooky guy, so him having laps in his memory from about 50 yrs ago or so is understandable & funny. lol
Blackton Obvious! while i think that DP was a parody of DS, at first, he later evolved to the point that they are only similar in name only (heck, look at modern DS, other than the mask he doesn't even look like DP), that being said, i think DS himself is a rip off of either Cap. A, Deathklok, Wolverine, or Taskmaster (who debuted a month before Deathstroke) which one he ripped off, i don't know, but i do think he ripped one of them off, the similarity are just too uncanny.
Well, I won't argue that DP has become an entertaining & popular character in his own right. But I'm just agreeing with the fact that DP is a parody of DS.
Personally I like DP better, but won't deny that he's an obvious parody of DS.
Blackton Obvious! I feel that he is not a rip off but a parody. His name is Slade Wilson and he is the exact opposite of death stroke in terms of personality. It was like when someone makes a parody of a song, they aren't ripping it off they are making fun of it.
Below0Gaming He's pretty much a rip off, but DP's creators were smart enough to know about "parody law" which would protect them from possible lawsuits.
He was suppose to be a "1 off" character, who wasn't suppose to be around outside an issue or two.
But they found a use for him & then he became popular.
They also later made DP dissimilar enough in his later iterations that he would stand out. The 1st DP wasn't crazy & funny, like he is today. He was pretty much like DS.
Inspired by, but not a rip off.
+Cc games Well, look no further than The Hulk and The Thing. Both are scientist turned giant mutants with super strength, but to say the Hulk is a total rip off is pretty naive. A rip-off(at least to me) is something where it brings nothing new to the table. I'd say the Hulk and Deadpool are both interesting enough on their own to not be considered rip-offs, but both are heavily inspired by other super heroes.
+rob lucci yah you can
Death stroke and Deadpool are not both from marvel idiot
He is a damn parody of Ds
Shouldn't call people idiots when you clearly can't read. Look carefully at the first line of his comment. See who he's replying to? look for that name in this section of comments. See the name of the person he was responding to? Cool. now this next part might be difficult, and if I'm explaining it too quickly then sorry, just tell me and I'll slow down but...read his comment.
The person he responded to was talking about Hulk and the thing. Hulk and thing are most definitely both marvel.
Don't throw out insults if you don't have all the info.
I am a comic book writer myself. I wrote a story where my main villain gets a break in from an old legend war hero that tries to outfight him in his own home to kind of level the score between the two. Basically putting the main hero in his place so the balance could be right again. I made it so the legend gets into a secret room and steals a suit based on the main heroes suit. They duke it out until the main hero gets beaten and the legends escapes in the suit. The legend then paints his suit and calls himself Patriot (A military Veteran in a mech suit). These two later fight it out multiple times over what they perceive to be right and wrong, before becoming close friends. I was already aware that my Main character was very similar to Iron-Man but completely different, but then I stepped back and realized I had ripped off Iron-Man 2.........A main villain fights a veteran in his own that results in the Iron-Man like character to be beaten and the Veteran takes the suit. He than spray paints his suit Red, white and blue and becomes Patriot......Iron Patriot anyone? They also fight a lot over which moral is right whether its military morals or the main characters self morals but in the end are friends in combat.... This truly bugged me because now there was not only comparisons to Iron-Man but there was almost an exact scene ripped off of Iron-Mans movie...needless to say I changed the stories around a lot....Don't even get me started with Patriot being compared to Captain America either...his origin was a bitch to make more original...so many history books. And to top it off...when my main character and Patriot fought....I was face-palming cause I realized I had created Marvel's Civil War just smaller and only between the two main leaders.......See that is what I mean. You create these great characters but sub-consciously you create what you have seen before in your mind....it sucks. I am happy to say I have a full universe of heroes that I am rewriting and making better everyday and soon I plan to publish them. Hopefully none of them are rip-offs that I am not aware of....
(P.S. I am creating my own Wilson/Wilsons in my universe as well....it sounds like fun!)
Do the vision
Alton English New episode about Vision will be up soon!
Yes, he's a ripoff of Martian Manhunter.
Powerset.
Alton English exactly deadpool is red and black deathstroke is orange and blue
+Chimera1591 nope, he's a straight up rip-off of red tornado. When vision first appeared he had the same colors as well
Deadpool personality when he first appeared was serious not like today.
I always thought he was a parody.
That was my understanding too.
Silver Fang The only evidence of a parody I could find is how his name is similar. I don't think any interviews I've found specifically state he was initially and intentionally created to be a parody.
i truly enjoy these videos...keep coming
Deadpool is terrible.
you are terrible
If you are not going to add anything and just complain please leave.
Rob c more like suck c
If you met him in real life, expect some shooting and stabbing ;)
+Rob C yeah he's pretty annoying
Rip-off?? No such thing in comic books. They all borrow/steal from each other so often that it is just status quo at this point, and how could it not be? Comics have been around for a hundred years now, how many super powers/occupations/weapons to fight with do you think there are before 2 characters have shared information. I see aquaman as a bigger "rip-off" of Namor than this, they don't have the same job, they have the same title of the same mythilogical underwater land mass and exact same powers and weaknesses (and similar personalities depending on the writer). If writers didn't borrow from one another comic books would end because no one would buy the new edition of DENTIST MAN. You see my point, over 100 years trying to make completely different characters from everyone else would eventually lead to creative stifling and eventually nothing new left. It doesn't help any when power pigs like superman call proverbial dibs on every power and ability conceivable at the time.
