She-Hulk has been breaking the fourth wall ever since John Byrne's Sensational She-Hulk run from the late 80s and early 90s. But what does it mean to break the fourth wall, and what can we learn from ancient philosopher Plato's allegory of the cave? Let's find out!

Hey, guys. Just to clarify, the point of this video was not to make a list of all the characters who have ever broken the fourth wall. That would be boring. So yes, I'm aware that there are plenty of others that I didn't mention. That was by design. I wanted to talk about She-Hulk. But the ideas in this video can be applied to your favorite fourth wall-breaking character without me needing to explicitly mention them in the video.
So with that said, who is *your* favorite character that has broken the fourth wall?

***** since she understands she's a comic book character, wouldn't that make her immune to things like the Ultimate Nullifier much like characters who know their characters being immune to the anti life equation...the same way that Barry Allen is immune to it. while to my knowledge he doesn't openly break the fourth wall, he's physically broken it when he became the speed force.

@@janejohnson4946 If you ask me She Hulk could kick Deadpool's arse by picking him up, carrying off the set of the movie (or in this case show) get in a cab, travel to the writers office at Marvel studios, go inside and forcing Deadpool to ask the writer to change the script to benefit her like having a fashion montage and giving Deadpool the worst clothes to wear.

She-Hulk has always been one of my all time favorites, she even broke the fourth wall during the cartoon in the 90s.

I initially got into She-Hulk because I stole one of my sister's comics. Then I bought the whole damn 60 issues on back issue, they were cheap back then and had no TPB. The Dan Slott 2000s run was great too.

finally, some love for she hulk. I actually used to read this one old comic at a local barbershop where she outright asked the artist to give her a little privacy, prompting the panel to split in two so she could take a shower.
I think it gave an appreciation for meta humor at an early age and also may have led to my love of strong, funny, and Badass female characters.
Love the comment. I learned to read from comics. Brought Cap to the barber shop and typically left them.

I think now is the perfect time for us to have a She-hulk movie. Banner is god knows where, he might be hiding with her and that is her origin story. She is known to have a romance with Tony and he is extremely lonely now. It is a good excuse for a hulk movie with a couple avengers with it.

I really liked lobo too. I wasn't a big DC fan, but I won a DC graphic novel from a local radio station. I chose lobo and it was strange. He killed Superman and darksied in the same book.

There is actually a few popular philosophies, based around the idea that we are just fictional characters, that don't realize we are fictional characters. Technically a philosophy that will never be proven or disproven, but a fun thought to play around with. Could explain why most people have a Protagonists Concept, basically they are the protagonist, in the story they exist in.

DC should make a comic where Batman starts to notice little things that aren't right and decides to investigate. When he does he figures out that he is just a comic book character and breaks the fourth wall. Thank you, I will be working on getting a job at DC.

One of my fave 4th wall jokes is also from the Damage Control issue with She-Hulk. As She-Hulk and the baddie are fighting, they keep breaking the walls of the building they are in, and a Damage Control character is just standing there, counting. After breaking the last (and fourth) wall, the building collapses as the Damage Control character comments that he keeps telling them breaking the fourth wall causes everything to come crashing down, but no one ever listens. Thanks for this fun video!

And now in 2 months, we have Disney+'s She-Hulk.
She broke the 4th wall in the two trailers twice.
First was at the end when she turns towards the camera and says "you won't like me when I'm angry.
Second was in the release date announcement trailer when she says "and adult orphans for some reason" Possibly because Tatiana Maslany's starring role in Orphan Black.
I was at India Grill (Arlington, TX) earlier this week for lunch with my darling wife. It was SO GOOD! At one point I turned to an empty booth and started talking to it about how good the food was.
Mrs. Tex asked, "What are you doing?"
"I'm breaking the fourth wall."
"Well, stop it!"
If you think about it ... they say there are an infinite number of alternate universes. In one of those they're bound to have developed the technology to view into other universes and watch them like TV shows. Right now someone from another universe might be watching you as entertainment. I say break that fourth wall and let them know you're on to them.

I think one of the next characters to be "dragged out of the cave" will probably be Hawkeye. His comment in AoU along the lines of "Im just a guy with a bow!" and stuff happening in his comic like "...this dogs name is arrow? ugh" makes me think his "eyes are adjusting to the light".

DC's Ambush Bug is always the first comic book character that comes to mind to me when I hear the term "breaking the fourth wall". I learned in this video there is at least one, and possibly several others that broke the fourth wall way before Deadpool.

Didn't She-Hulk's awareness of being a comic book character expand quite a bit when she was exposed to the insanity inducing villain Madcap? I always took this as the reason why she knew she was a comic book character. Madcap left her "insane" so she think's she in a comic.

They sorta retconned her fourth wall awareness in a more recent series, while also maybe not. The CCA was revealed to be an in-universe comic book publisher basically serving as newspapers/tabloids for adventures of super heros in their own world. All the fourth wall breaking was added in for dramatic effect or entertainment, by the in-universe "reporters". Maybe.

Animal man's fourth wall breaking in Grant Morrison's run is my personal favourite. Like when Grant goes into the comic to explain to Animal Man that his life is so Shit so more people will buy his comics.

This is an insane coincedence. I've never seen this video till now which is literally the first thing I watched after this week's episode of legion. This weeks episode of legion had a part that showed Plato's cave shadows allegory! It's almost creepy how I stumbled on this immediately after.
Maybe in the She-Hulk movie (if there is one), she can read "The Allegory Of The Cave" before turning into She-Hulk.
My favorite 4th wall breaker is Mr. Mxyzsptlk. Before Infinite Crisis, he literally goes out of the comics into the DC office and talks to the executives.

What I like about She-Hulk is she also had to learn when to not acknowledge her comic book existence and how it still follows her in different ways.
When she was hired as a lawyer at Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway (GLK&H) her legal research expanded beyond Matt Murdock's because the larger law firm has a morgue full of old comic books with the Comic Code Authority labels. The CCA label meant the comics were legally binding as history and legal precedent in court.
Later She-Hulk learned that there was a interdimensional tourist business where the alternate versions of themselves from a world without superheroes got to switch bodies and live in the Marvel superhero world. This explained when a character acted out of character or when they died and came back for no good reason. The writers used this to explain why She-Hulk slept around for no reason, but doesn't remember doing it ( She-Hulk vol.4, #21).
Benjamin Abruzzo The CCA thing was really interesting when I read it. Especially the issue when they were in a comic store and fans were berating her with questions about why the continuity was all screwy. Then there was a nice speech about how comics fans should try to find ways to fix the continuity instead of just yelling about its flaws. Perfect!

In her recent comics, recent enough to have the Civil War arc, she hints at it because in that universe Marvel comics exist as chronicles of the acts of the heroes and someone actually asked if she can break the fourth wall still and she winks at us.
That bit where She-Hulk rips through the page and she and the others escape across the adverts is my favourite of her 4th Wall breaks and was the one I thought of when you first started discussing She-Hulk.

I'm not upset you didn't mention Deadpool (double negative). I'm disappointed you never mentioned Ambush Bug; another green character (this time from DC) who also breaks the fourth wall a lot. He was breaking the fourth wall at least a decade before she did.
I forgot She Hulk was before Deadpool when it came to fourth wall politics. This screams sexism.

Byrne's She-Hulk run helped cement my adult love for comics. It was brilliant. When people go on about Deadpool breaking the fourth wall, I just roll my eyes. She-Hulk was a post-grad-level fourth wall breaker before DP was an itch in Fabian Nicieza's (or the other purported creators') brain(s).
But who was the FIRST comic character to routinely break the 4th wall?
And did it actually start with comics?
I'm not an expert, but I think a couple of Shakespeare's scripts made comments about being characters in a play once or twice, didn't they?

I have been a fan and subscriber for quite some time (beginning with a different YT acct), and have always enjoyed your videos. This is the first time I have been compelled to comment. Thank you for making this video! It was so well done. I have long been a fan of meta and self-referential humor, breaking the 4th wall, etc., in comics, TV, and movies. However, I have never considered the connection to Plato's Cave. This was brilliant and so well explained. Job well done! And keep making great videos!
