- Comic book superheroes have some of the greatest (and sometimes lamest) origin stories. But what exactly is an origin story, and why do we as readers care about them so much? Today, we're breaking down the three kinds of superhero origins, and what elements they need to include to help establish the character and the world they live in. Most importantly, we're not just teaching you how to write origin stories, but we're also exploring the psychological reasons why they are important, and why almost every comic book movie is doing it wrong! I think characters like Aquaman and Black Panther have the best origins. They can have anything they want, but their biggest goal is protecting their people.

Exactly! It all depends on what you classify as "living" - criminals in a phantom zone, etc. would indicate that Superman was not the last survivor of Krypton, unless Kryptonian society strips the right to life or recognition of life legal status away from criminals and prisoners?

I think we can consider the Last Survivor as being the Last New Born of Krypton before exploded, although whatever other babies born before or during the explosion of Krypton is irrelevant for the story, Superman is the Youngest survivor of Krypton, and the youngest is the last one to be born, by that logic Superman is the Last Survivor of Krypton.
Remember that a whole kryptonian city gets saved by Brainiac.
Not every origin story HAS to come from tragedy. Barry Allen's original reason for becoming the Flash was the same reason he became a cop; because he was inspired by tales of Jay Garrick. That's it. He was inspired by (originally fiction, retconned post-Crisis as previous) heroes to become one. His parents were still alive. The whole murder thing was added fairly recent as DC tries to give Batman's motivation to everybody.
In fact, my favorite origins are ones where the hero becomes one because he/she has powers or some high-tech thing now and it's the right thing to do to use them to battle villains that are too powerful for the police or in ways they can't. Those seemed to have faded away in favor of trauma-only origins. That saddens me.
One Character that I have played in several games is a shape changer who takes on the form of a HUGE tiger. Sure, his mother died when he was a child, but it was the monks who raised him that instilled a sense of morality that led to his becoming a Bahg Khan (Tiger Lord.) The Bahg Khan exist to destroy evil. You identify evil not by what people say, but by what they do. Weretiger (an intensionally misleading name), sometimes called Rakshasa (also intentionally misleading) understands that his purpose on earth is to destroy evil. He is what most consider an anti-hero because he has no 'code vs killing' and will kill villains and their minions without remorse, though he uses restraint against the mearly stupid or selfish. His mother;s unfortunate death does not shade his actions or outlook because that wasn't the 'defining event' in his life.
I should add that he doesn't know who his father is, nor does his father know that he is his child or that he even had a child with Weretiger's mother.
ShadowWing Tronix I completely agree. I don’t understand why people believe that there are no good people in this world who just want to do good.
I also like it best when both of Superman's parents, the Kents, are alive. Sure in the Golden Age the Kents died of old age before Clark became Superman and Jonathan Kent died when Clark was still a teen in the Donner Superman movies but in Post-Crisis and Post-Doomsday Clock, both his parents are alive. The same in the DC Animated Universe. Not every Superhero has to be born of tragedy, just a powerful event that inspires them to do good.
Heck, before Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore's Killing Joke, the death of Bruce's parents did not traumatize him, as it is portrayed today, but _motivated_ him to be a crime fighter so no one would suffer like he did.
@@foldabotZ My "favorite" version of the Kents passing was when Superboy was talked by the Kents into taking them on mission and they ended up catching a disease or something. They got to experience something amazing and then passed together. I prefer them passing together like with Jor-El and Lara. It's more...I'm not sure romantic is the right word but it's the best I can think up at the moment.

I feel like what makes Marvel and DC different is what kind of heroes they make...Marvel makes heroes based off of normal everyday people and they're characters that you relate to more than DC heroes
DC however make legendary characters, basically mythological gods and characters that you look up to

Not like Batman who was traumatized by his parents death. Spider-Man who destined to be bitten by radioactive spider cause the mysthic spider chooses him. And superman was lucky cause it almost kill all of his entire race cause of the explosion of the red sun.

I think my favorite origins are the ones that are really more of a lack of origin, like Tim Drake. Tim Drake's life was going fine, there was no radioactive spider or gamma bomb, no dead parent trauma (initially), just a kid who thought he could help and did. Superman's like that a lot, too: he does what he does because he can and feels he should. Whether he came from Krypton or Kansas, he would still be helping people in whatever way he can. Those are my favorites because they're the most human, the most relatable, and the most transferable. People try to romanticize Batman, saying that anyone could be Batman, since he's just a guy, but no, Batman was created by a perfect storm of circumstance. Tim Drake just did it. Shit, Carrie Kelley literally just bought a costume from a drug store and started going after crime. These guys remind us that anyone can make this world better, anyone can make a difference if they just go out there and give it their all.
Very true. People tend to forget that Bruce could have gone either the Punisher route, or even Lex Luthor route - by having money, and therefore access to some power, they could have tried to reshape the world in their own image, either at the end of gun or through privilege and connections. Or even as a crime lord himself. His trauma could easily have manifested itself into murderous anger, making him even more dangerous than the Joker.
@@sigmacademy Yeah, you are right. I could think how to make a villain from Batman's origin story and I believe everyone could too. It is easy. Just twist it a little bit. "From that night on, Bruce hates criminal. The very same type of weapon, gun, that takes his parents' lives will now be used by him to take the lives of scums that reminded him of his parents' murderer, criminals. Now he becomes a villain that swears to kill all criminals and will go even as far as killing any hindrance that will prevent him achieving that goal. His name is Batman, the villain of Gotham."

I feel that we love origin stories the way we do not because we want to "understand" or "humanize" the character, but because we need to know why should we root for them. This is true for both the heroes and the villains
We need something to empathize with. All of us want to be able to fly,but most of us prefer to be Superman over, for example, Captain Atom, because we can relate more to the life and struggles of good old Clark, the farmer, than Nathaniel, the nuclear soldier.
Excellent point! But I wonder if we can achieve this same empathizing goal without the need for origins. If we can see who a character is now and root for them without needing to know their past. What do you think?
Oh, I think we can, but the origin story is like... a safer bet?
An origin story, as you said, gives us insight about why a character does what he does. Maybe I can't really empathize with The Penguin, as I see him as just a murderous gangster and whatnot. But I can relate to Oswald Cobblepot. I get to know why he is who he is now.
What I'm trying to say (even though I can't really find the correct words to do so) is that, even though we can root for a character just by seeing it today (We can all root for Spiderman when we see him saving orphans on a fire), by seeing how they became who they are, we can kind of "forgive" the things that didn't let us really connect with them.
Maybe, now that I think about it, it does have a lot to do with understanding the character, but not for the sake of it, but because understanding them lets us root for them.

I've invented a character who just decided to be a hero when she got her power, and just though why not. But then she struggles because it is ruining her life, but she can't stop because she realises that when she doesn't people die, so she gets on with it and sacrifices herself for the greater good. What category would that fit in?

Resignation, rather than "With great powers comes great responcibility." Occasionally you have characters who would rather not have the powers and just live normal lives, but circumstances just keep dragging them back into conflict with bad guys. This was the story of Havoc, brother of Cyclops. He just wanted to be left along, but bad guys kept intruding on his planet and he would be forced to deal with them to keep his family safe.

Once there was a boy who had no friends so he read comics his parents were shot in an alley way, his planet blew up, he was struck by a bolt of lightning and was the chosen one, the chosen nerd. From then on he used his amazing researching powers to create NERDSYNC the world's nerdiest superhero

+Deebo Molina Nerdsync's origin is when Scott was a kid, he saw a camera but the camera only spook to him in obscure comic book references...however one day his parents came into his room and all over the room's walls were written random comic book quotes like "you're one bad day to becoming me" and "I am the night" and desperately they researched and found out that these were comic books...so as they began to collect comic books, Scott began to see all the boxes and receipts from the CB stores and wondered where are the comics, but terror struck!! When Scott picked up The Flash and opened it up to Mopey's introduction...the wizard came out of the page and placed Scott's Parents into the camera and Mopey said, " in order to find your parents...your inner Nerd must be in Sync!" Thus Scott began the RUclips channel Nerdsync, in hopes that his parents will be freed from the camera that Mopey put them into!
actually, that whole thing about how the hero and villain can go through the same things and come out completely different is something I'm toying with exploring in a superhero webcomic I'm drafting.

In my estimation, the "origin story" is the shortest possible way of answering the question "who are you?" I'm much more interested in the "normal" mutants from the Marvel Universe who HAVE super-powers but struggle to live a life like everyone else rather than get drawn into the X-men's drama. The Jessica Jones series was AMAZING for that with their version of Luke Cage.

I always appreciated heroes that have had to train hard to become what they are, especially when that training is ongoing. That is one of the things I always liked about dragon ball z. All the characters, but especially holy and vegeta, train super hard (hyperbolic time chamber/room of spirit and time anyone?). One thing that kinda always bothered me though is how vegeta always seemed one step behind goku, despite how hard he always trains....
What you are talking about is called Character Progression. A lot of comics just gloss over this, introducing new powers when it is convenient without ever showing the characetrs working to enhance/expand/hone/increase their abilities. 'Golden Age" Superman was the worst, every other comic had him inventing some super power to save the day that we would never ever see again.
In X-men they used the Danger Room to work on their abilities and skills and this fits into the idea of working to get better. There are so few skill based supers like Batman or Multipleman (sure he could make copies of himself, but that was his only power) and even then they rarely cover training to become better at what you do.
The Jester - Fool Of Hearts it's pretty good, but I'm burnt out on "family/friends/roommates/strangers die, hero swears vengeance" trope.
Goku always being ahead of Vegeta is simply because Goku is the main protagonist and Vegeta is his rival - if the rival does better than the protagonist, it's usually just to serve as the protagonist's goal to overcome, which Vegeta only does for Goku when he's clearly evil (via his own pride and superiority from his arrival on Earth with Nappa or through possession by another villain like Babidi or Baby.)
Goku will always be the main lead for Dragon Ball, has been since the very beginning, so he must always be somehow ahead of Vegeta no matter how much training the Prince of All Saiyans does to try and best him, that's just the way it is.
I always thought it kinda served to show somthibg like how vegeta is highly prudfull with ego , as he is the Prince of All Sayians , was destined to rule the planet.
But Goku , someone born of a lower class sayian , is his rival which is kinda a forced humility by life , that no one really is entitled, that's why Goku and Vegeta are actually equal in my opinion , just that Goku has had more experiences as he was always fighting and strugglein against someone who was stronger and Vegeta was naturally strong , but probably didn't struggle as much with anyone in the beginning of his life.
Plus you can also count cell saga where Gohan was stronger than everyone.
@@SirFailsalot91 if a story is the way it is, "just because" then that's bad storytelling. though, it's a bad message for the proud one to be glamorized. since vegeta is consistently bested by goku, i'd expect for vegeta to grow more humble- hence realizing the need to train. it's been awhile since I've watched, but I think that is at least hinted at. now, if there was a reason like, since athletic performance is mostly determined by the mind, and vegeta is unwilling to be honest about his feelings (inferiority/surprise/admiration/respect/anything) towards goku, that he never really performs his best when he consciously realizes that the two are competing... that would be huge. I'm hoping that goku was raised with the earth's ideas of mental training you might expect of a monk, and that he is therefore better prepared for handling his thoughts/feelings explaining his relaxed/happy mentality, and better performance.
I like this headcannon, I think I'm going to keep it.

Dear Scott, it has been months since I stared following your channel and although I am way too novice to be called a comic book nerd, I must admit you have given me a fresh new perspective on comics. I wanted to share with you that this particular episode on comic origins is the best one yet and has really struck a chord with me. We all face multiple adversities in our life and have to struggle to make meaning out of it, how trivial it might be. But this video has reminded me why I love comics so much, not only because of the flair and pomp, but because it gives me a little bit of hope to try be a better person and rise above the struggle. I wish I could feature in your centennial video but have nothing to offer as interesting as you discuss here. I thank you again for making my day and keep up the good work.
This actually really helped me with the development of my own characters story and I am rushing for a pen and paper to write down the ideas that you have given me, love this channel.
Near the end you mentioned that superheroes and villains have different reactions to "one bad day". What if Batman became a villain? What made him become a good guy? If somebody killed my parents, I would probably be a villain and seek revenge but that's just me.
You should read up on Prometheus (who is one of the few people to have ever beat Batman in a fistfight, by the way) if you haven't already. He is basically exactly that. He's like the dark mirror of Batman.
While the deaths of Bruces parents is the trauma, it is not realy the difing moment. It is when Detective (later Commissioner) Gordon puts his caot around Bruce and comforts him, and later befriends him) that is the defining moment. It is the reaction and later actions of this man that promts Bruce to become a force for good, even if he is a vigilante some of the time.
Deathstroke is basically Evil Batman; that's why he's Robin's foil most of the time; he's all the worst aspects of Robin's mentor.

I love the channel and don't miss an upload but this video really stood out to me because I want to create a comic book universe and I've been working on it since I was 18 and I just turned 24, I have the characters and everything set up and played out but your video put a lot into perspective for me and I'm going to revisit what I have to make the best stories I can, I have no formal writing training or any know-how so I doubt that anything I write will make to shelves but it's the inspiration that guys (and girls) like you give that make and help people create so who knows man maybe this is just my successes origin story. regarding Spider-man, when he fought his first super-villain, the Vulture, he actually wasn't trying to defeat him. He was merely tailing him as Spider-man to get photos to sell to Jameson. Vulture didn't like being followed and attacked him. So Spidey's road to crime fighting was kind of organic.
Phil V Actually...that's partially true. Peter had already faced off against the Chameleon by that point so he had already fought some crime. But supercrime was kind of new.

Personally I love the Flash's origin. (Bit bias because Flash is my favorite) It's what makes him a better version of batman. One who wants to do good in the light as a good person (and a good character, sorry bat fans).
Batman is not a good man.
But he is an extremely interesting character who coincidentally is also a Badass. Hence his popularity.

This is probably my favorite NerdSync video of all time! And I've watched almost all of them!
I'm making a comic Batman spoof, except he's a corn, and a hawk.
It started as an anti-vegan joke, "SAVE THE VEGETABLES"
Then, it turned pretty original. I think, while keeping the vibe of Batman.
ANYWAYS ENOUGH WITH THAT NIT-WIT!
His father got eaten, his mother married an abusive man afterwards, he turns into an alcoholic, he gets kicked out from the house, he's homeless, gets drugged, sent to prison, police found evidence of drugging, releases him, is on trial, someone gives him a briefcase ("someone" is the first villain), gets rich from that, gets a good school, courses in technology, and computer science, learns martial arts, and improved science. The first villain sets up a first technological attack (Percy made an AI and HH corrupted the system, so that it would follow his orders), not knowing it was Percy (our protagonist) and gets traced, Percy tried to invade him. Percy is injured, he retreats, his city is attacked, his mother dies in his arms, her last words "Your father will see me, but I may not see him." (as she knows she's going to hell for what she's done to her family) he immediately found evidence that Hooded Hack (the first villain) did it. He sets out with armor, gets attacked, and goes with the signature present day armor. Is it too sad or edgy?
It's like Ralph Wrecks the Internet.... on steroids. :P :)
I made a super hero called Captain Nimbus, he can control smoke, wind, air, clouds, etc. He was a Captain for the U.S. Army when he was exposed to minor radiation from a bomb that had been dropped about half a mile away, but he escaped into a helicopter to get away from the explosion, then when he flies into the clouds, the clouds fuse into his body allowing him to control wind, and when he gets back he gets really depressed because all of his men had died so he makes an oath to himself to avenge his comrades and to put an end to unjust evil.

Maskot has massive strength he got his powers from a strange blue liquid so lets say he wanted his arm to be strong quickly ittl turn blue and light. He can regenerat awfulky fast. If u cut off his head itll grow faster than 1 second. He ends up getting stronger where he can brake dimaond by poking it
Secter has similar abilitues because maskot is his power but has a high tech suit that helps him in battle
Wizery can bassicly do anything u think of. He is a sourcer but can do much more
Warfighter is a soldier trained where secter also got trained
Rid receives powers from gods wgen they die. He can control ur mind or take ur soul he also can brainwash u he trained secter and warfighter..let ne know if u want to know more

When did Superman stop being a symbol of “the American way”? Could we get a video about that?
It just feels like in the last ten years that has dropped from his motto.
Whenever I heard that phrase it always made me think Truth and Justice was the American way.
Probably because Truth and Justice has become subjective in modern society. The motto was created in an era when Americans believed absolutely that they were the moral guardians of the world, but over the years, many scandals, secrets and revelations has indicated quite a lot of times where certain Americans have been involved in many shady things all over the world. In the same vein, Superman has also been tainted by hard choices and unforeseen circumstances, and he's no longer the Boy Scout, but the disillusioned, conflicted hero. The absolute belief in what is right and wrong has been replaced with which losses are acceptable and where and when these sacrifices and losses needs to be taken in order to preserve more life. Dying probably gave him a brand new perspective on what can happen when vigilance is replaced by complacency. I would think that it would have the same trauma on him as Thanos beating Iron Man, or Sinestro against Hal Jordan, or Starlord finding out that his dad is a ruthless superbeing that regularly engaged in the destruction of entire branches of his own family?
That new lens though...

I personally think a villain is best when said villain's goals and/or intentions/motives are relatable. For example, a villain who's end goals and intentions are good, but who's methods and ideologies are incorrect. That way said character is still technically the villain, but at least you can see where he/she's coming from. That's just what I've always thought.

As for a origin story I would say, Daredevil is one hell of an origin story. Not really for Daredevil, but the villain, The Kingpin, it was a very well story and not really we see a lot where the villain gets the focus of the origin story.

So was Deku in My Hero Academia (a Japanese manga which the artist explicitly states was inspired by Marvel comics). In a world where X-Men-style mutants are the _majority_ of the population, Deku's trauma stemmed from being a rare person born _without_ a power.
He tries his darnedest to become a "superhero" anyway, which causes his idol- a famous superhero with super strength, _who turns out to have the secret ability to gift his own powers to other people-_ to take notice.
After having the power gifted to him, Deku finds out the downside is that super strength does not come with *invulnerability.* _Human finger bones are fragile little things when used to punch a badguy straight into next week..._

Now,origins story:the reason why I love origins stories is because is the beginning of the character that we fall in love with,in my case:batman...he trained to become batman using his money to travel around the world learning detective work,scientist,criminal behaviour,psychology,martial arts...the origins story is where we find out the purpose of out favourite characters:why they do what they do ??? Why he dress like that ??? Etc etc

I want a future X-Men movie, to contain Deadpool from the new movie, but be PG13, so there can be 1 F-word in it, and deadpool goes around carefully avoiding swearing and then Wolverine uses it right in front of him, and he flips out, and proceeds to replace every swearword in his vocabulary with the word "bub", including giving the finger, with a big paper sign on his hand that says "bub", always while looking at wolverine and being angry. He was going to use that F-bomb perfectly, and it was going to have the best comedic timing, and be so over the top and nope, bub stole it from him. Thanks for reminding me about wolverine calling everyone bub.

I think predictable is not the word. It's more like plausible.

Though not having an origin makes him more mysterious and sometimes even interesting as it often makes people ask "How did he end up like this?"

Great video and topic for discussion. I think us as readers care about the origin story as it resonates with some event or circumstance that we experienced and hooks us into it. I think it's that in part where we become invested with the character or drop interest based on our perspectives.

I have a character called Cudi. He's just a human. That's it. No powers. He just wants to do the right thing. His parents always taught him that. And their deaths was his main motivation. When he was a kid he heard his parents die then saw their lifeless bodies beneath the feet of they're killer. He was next. But before they killed him he was saved by his hero. The Dart. Cudi's main motivation is that he doesn't want some kid walking into the entrance hallway of their home to see their dead parents on the ground and having to live with that for the rest of his life like he has to.

One being a rich guy a taxi driver and a mercenary. He also gets stronger under a full moon. He’s nothing like Batman! There are a few similarities but really not much

Nice video. I watched a doc about comics before, and it explained the various origins of different eras too. It went something like Mysticism/alien origin (Green Lantern), then science fiction became popular (getting powers from Gamma Rays, etc), and then some sort of traumatic event (Batman). Don't know if there are any newer kinds though.

Some origin stories weren't meant to be told, it's the mystery that makes them interesting. That's why Wolverine's origin sucks.
It was cool when we didn't know his exact origin, only seemingly incongruous snippets. That was one of the things that appealed to me about Wolverine, that and his laconic speach. We never got to know the real Logan for ages because he just didn't tell people everything about his life. I guess that's one of the things that makes the Logan and Kitty Pride mini-series so great, you learn more bits about his past as the story unfolds without having pages and pages of exposition.

What makes Bruce Wayne interesting before his parents' death
the interesting thing about bruce was formed after their death because he was just a kid when they died and his identity was still tied to them. We actually get to track him forming a subsequent identity because he had an undeveloped one

Before the death of his parents he was just your run of the mill 9(?) year old child of loving parents. Remember, back in the olden days he was a vigilante, it wasn't until recent remakes that he has been a full fledged Hero. His story could have gone the other way, and has in alternate stories. I contribute his rise as a good guy to those who were in his life after the deaths of his parents being a good influence on him.

Spider-Man definitel has the best origin, which clearly shows why Marvel changed the comic book industry back int eh 60's. It made their characters real and flawed.
Also, Wolverines "Origin" is total bullshit. James Hawlet my butt. He's Logan. End of story.
Actually, the bad guy that turned good because he's lost all his memories and therefore part of his personality actually works. It shows the viewer that even "bad" people aren't inherently evil, but is both redeemable and worth being redeemed. Which is why Logan is such a badass character - he's still the angry, wolf cub we've all come to love, but at least he's not a ruthless, calculating murderer (like Deathstroke, for example).

Very interesting; very enthralling video and a truly fascinating concept and topic to explore....wow. Exploring origins and their basis is really fascinating. As far as my favorite origin I'd have to say Superman. Superman is fascinating to me because of how he grew in time with love and nurturing to be a great hero and because of that he uses his powers wisely and with compassion.
