This ONE Move Added 57 Yards To My Drives!

  • It's no secret that distance is key now in golf. In todays video I will show you one crucial move to optimise your drives so you can hit the ball further and straighter than ever before!
    The downswing, impact and follow through are the money zones of the golf swing. I see so many golfers struggle with having the correct amount of shoulder tilt through impact. As a result your angle of attack, club path and overall strike is compromised. This then affects your distance and accuracy. By having the correct amount of side bend and tilt through impact you will optimise your impact conditions helping you your drivers longer and straighter than ever before.
    In this video I run through a series of downswing drills, impact drills and follow through drills that will help you learn how to extend the lead side of your body correctly through impact. Do this and you might just gain 57 yards like me!

    Awesome Giles! You gave it a "little bit of a knock!" I like the swing you are promoting in order to generate more distance. I have been using something similar but not quite as severe (after all I'm a senior golfer) but I am definitely generating more distance. I'm trying to takeaway with a left shoulder push and pulling back the right shoulder more and then rebound off of that movement on the downswing. Always a pleasure to watch what you're advocating Giles! Keep up the good work!!

Especially getting the pressure to their lead leg and the side bend you’re referring to. I’m glad to see this on a video. Giles you seem to offer more great things that will really help. Wow! I like math and physics, and have KNOWN that the tilt in the shoulders is needed. Over the years, I'm sure there was a tilt during the "longer drive" years. (I used to try to "finish high")
    Today, standing in the kitchen, trying to do the chopstick drill just with my shoulders - I can really feel my body trying to go to a flat shoulder turn. It takes effort to change, but knowing what I'm striving for sure helps!

    Great video and stick drill. My question is: does the side bend promote an inside club head path? And are you trying to hit up on the ball or does that happen automatically with this technique? Thanks

    • @Gilesgillgolf
      @Gilesgillgolf  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes it does promote more of an inside path and I’m just focusing on the body movements. When you do this the angle of attack will largely take care of itself

  • @TeddyCavachon
    @TeddyCavachon 11 месяцев назад +4

    If you stop an consider the role the mass of the lead arm in the golf swing you will realize what adding side bend action to the downswing does.
    Lead arm and club are, mechanically, very similar to the dual-level action of a Trebuchet which rapidly accelerates a rock in a sling around a more massive and slower moving lever arm. The rock gets flung a great distance in whatever direction that heavier, slower ,moving primary lever is pointing.
    When what side bending of the spine affects in the golf swing is the direction and force vector of the lead arm mass relative to ground (affecting gravity assisted acceleration and more distance) and relative to the target line (affecting accuracy). It also affects the shifting of the axis of rotation for the club head during the downswing.
    During the backswing and start of the downswing the club head swings around the lead shoulder joint. But as the club force is allowed to pull the trail arm straight the axis of rotation starts to shift to spine then trail shoulder as both arms are pulled straight, then lead arm starts to fold down and trail arm and shoulder socket bear all the swing force. This will occur in swings with and without side bend action; what the side bending does is change the timing of when it occurs.
    A swing with side bend will have a more elliptical path which keep the club head tracking near the ball-target line longer. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line so given the same amount of striking force the ball hit straighter will go further. 😊

    I believe the longest drive in a PGA tournament (Senior Tournament) was, Mike Austin at the age 0f 64 hitting the ball 515 Yards. In 2004, it was Davis Love III hitting his drive 476 Yards.

    Just starting out. 57yrs old. I fully understand the logic and physics behind your swing. As an older beginner, is there a concern about the stress placed on the back when trying to max it out? Is there a more body friendly version that can sort of achieve similar results regarding weight shift? Thanks

    • @Gilesgillgolf

  • @davidgraham8058
    @davidgraham8058 11 месяцев назад +2

    I think a lot of amateurs get into this movement by trying to fix an early extension. They end up not extending at all because they get scared of standing up out of posture.
    But you actually need to stand up (extend) once you have shifted weight to your lead side. As you feel you stand up, it actually creates rotation and clubhead speed as it releases.

    • @Gilesgillgolf
      @Gilesgillgolf  11 месяцев назад

      You do always extend but like in the name players do it too early. It’s understanding how to get into the right position and then extend from there

    Oooh !!! Good one. I will certainly report back. I can tell you that my carry at this moment with a Ping G410 plus is only about 200 yds. with range balls. If I hit the back fence that will be about 225 yds. so we'll see. My goal has been just a bit more I would like to see 235 but that's a bit of an ask given my age. 235 yds. with some rollout would be very satisfactory because actual play would be with a much better golf ball.
