It's the sincerity of it. Charisma delivers it perfectly, especially coming off her previous comedic lines. The contrast really hits home.

Yes, it's very rare for a slayer to reach their 18th birthday, only a handful get there. The theory is that the council actually want the slayers to die during these tests, as younger slayers are easier to control.
Only problem with that theory, is that in this particular instance it wouldn't work. The Slayer line lies with Faith not Buffy 🤷♀️ I can get the idea that "that is how it's always been done" and "Faith doesn't care about her Slayer studies"... But if Buffy were to die, they would only have a rogue Slayer on their hands that is only a few months younger 🤷♀️

Cody & Sergio, Jeff Kober is the name of the actor who played Zachary Kralik in this episode.
You are correct he did play Jackson Ward in episode 1x20 | "The Power of Two" of "Charmed".
Jeff has also stared in 168 episodes of "General Hospital" as Cyrus Renault, 57 episodes of "China Beach" as Sgt. Evan 'Dodger' Winslow, 13 episodes of "Sons of Anarchy" as Jacob Hale Jr., and 4 episodes of "The Walking Dead" as Claimer Leader, Joe.
I love that the episode about a literal witch hunt (complete with burning at the stake) turns out to be a goofy and delightful romp, while the episode about a girl's birthday turns out to be a heartbreaking and horrifying nightmare involving deep betrayal and a VAMPIRE SERIAL KILLER.
Also, SMG's little yodel on "Did I get it?!" will forever crack me up. :)
These episodes started probably the longest quality run in the series. Every episode here to the finale is just so good in all the ways that make Buddy great.
My favorite moment in this episode is when Quentin tells Giles that he has a father's love for the child. The look on Buffy's face breaks me a little bit.
My friend Jack plays the assistant mayor this season. I'm always so jealous of him. He's been in so many shows I watch.

@@adgato75 He's always good in everything. I moved to Hollywood in 1997 but we didn't meet until 2003, so he had already done Buffy. He was making a film called Girls Will Be Girls with CoCo Peru and Varla Jean Merman and we met at a charity event. We are both from Ohio and really hit it off. I moved back home to help my mom out a couple years ago so I don't see most of my old gang very often now. I'm going to West Hollywood in October for Halloween so I can't wait to see everyone.
So you'll see a lot of actors who were in both Charmed and Buffy, because they are 'monster of the week' shows running around the same time so they cycle through many of the same people. Which is awesome. It's so much more funny when you see the same actor back playing a different role seasons later. Like Brian Thompson has played two different characters in Buffy AND Charmed.
The one that surprised me was Armin shimerman 😂
And Brian Thompson was in Hercules also.
My head canon is that the Council pulled strings to force her dad to work. So that she would be free for the test.
Sarah Michelle Gellar not getting all the awards is a crime. She kills me in Helpless.
Helpless shows just how The Watchers Council view the slayers as nothing but tools in the war they wage against the supernatural. They don't see them as human at all, just disposable soldiers. Imagine how many slayers before her that lived to 18, died because they weren't like Buffy or a Watcher like Giles.
Exactly, I also believe they are not opposed to them dying in this trial, the younger the girl is the easier she is to control.
There's a reason why they didn't exactly tell Giles what was happening, because he would not participate. If he was aware of their plans, he'd most likely directly ask Buffy to get her consent or simply refuse it if it didn't really have any benefit.
There is a fan theory, to which I subscribe, that the real purpose of the test is to eliminate slayers before they become too independent--or leave them so traumatized they don't challenge the council's authority. After all, if the slayer dies, a new one is activated.

I love Cordelia in episode 11 she starts off wanting to persecute the people responsible but then immediately wants to go help when she sees the town has gone too far
Giles and Cordy working together is always comedy gold. They should have done it a little more often.
Gingerbread was an interesting episode on many levels. The main message here is showing how 'mob rule' can easily be influenced by misinformation and even turn on their own friends and family. The burning of the books also an obvious reference to The Nazis who did the same in the 1930s. The overt references to Hansel and Gretel regarding the children very interesting too. Again when get some comic relief with Oz and Xander falling through the roof at the end in their rescue attempt. A very decent S3 stand alone episode again.
The direction of Helpless was so good, as you guys mentioned- they really leaned into the horror aspect and the music was amazing. As for the Cruciamentum - it’s been speculated that the reason why its done, it’s not just to test a Slayer- because what value does taking away powers do to a Slayer? It’s a false test but. It’s just another tool of the Council of Watchers to control the Slayer. If the Slayer survives, great, if they don’t… well… a new Slayer will be called.
After every reaction I just think "Honey, you've got a big storm coming" because it just keeps getting better and better. Always a highlight of my Fridays. Also have to love how they can have such heavy scenes cut in with Cordelia making sure to keep it light hearted.
Jeff Kober did a amazing job giving, Criminaly insane vampire, Drucilla level. love his interactions with Kristine Sutherland.
He also played a vampire in "Kindred: The Embraced". One of the main cast.

Among many other roles, he was Luke in the Buffy pilot and "The Judge" in Season 2 Buffy
This episode is a study in psychopathy, and they painted Kralik as a Hannibal Lecter. Jeff nailed it. I love the 'I have a problem with mothers - I'm aware of that'.
With the Slayer trial, there is something to the idea that the test was designed not to make Slayers stronger by teaching them to use their wits and not be too reliant on their strength, but rather to kill them. When a Slayer dies, a new Slayer is called. So they will never run out of their foot soldier by sacrificing them. So, what does the Council get by intentionally killing a Slayer on their 18th birthday when they have obviously proven themselves a formidable warrior after 2-3 years of battling evil. What they get is a new Slayer that is younger and likely more prone to be controllable. As people get older, they become more independent. Buffy, turning 18 is becoming an adult, and thus more independent, and thus less likely to be controllable by the Watchers. From the Watchers perspective the Test is a win-win. If the Slayer fails, they get a new Slayer that should be easily controllable for the next few years. If the Slayer passes, then they get a Slayer that is even more formidable than before (at least in theory).
The head honcho also stated that the test is not just for the Slayer, but also for her Watcher. They have a vested interest in the Watchers not get too attached to the Slayer. Slayers die. They die a lot. Most it seems die within a couple of years. If a Watcher becomes too attached to a Slayer, then they may prevent the Slayer from going into dangerous encounters where that Slayer may die. We saw this in season 1e12 when Giles was going to face the master instead of Buffy. Buffy had to knock him out to prevent him from taking her place. If a Watcher gets too attached to their Slayer, they may try similar things, or avoid telling their Slayer about dangerous evils so as to prevent their Slayer from fighting that Evil and dying.
The Test, by forcing the Watcher to, essentially, poison his charge, forces him to detach himself from her and from her fate, so that he will always be willing to send her into danger, even knowing that she may die. So, if the Slayer fails the test, the Watchers get a new, younger, more easily controllable Slayer. And if the Slayer passes the test, but the Watcher fails, then they assign a new Watcher who will have no prior attachment to the Slayer.
Giles actions in Helpless give his determination last season that Buffy's birthday be celebrated a different context.
Helpless is one of my favourite episodes and SMG once again showing off her emotional acting chops.
Cordelia is always the Queen of being blunt, but that "of course" without a moments hesitation when Buffy asks for help shows that she immediately recognised this was a situation she was needed to be helpful and not bitchy.
Seeing Buffy vulnerable is heartbreaking.
Also the reveal of Giles injecting Buffy was one of thee most unimaginable moments of the whole show. We were all devastated.
Aw, Sergio had a tear streaming from his eye when she found out what Giles was doing to her. Love seeing such strong emotion.

Tonight's episodes are two good ones.
Episode 3x11: A real witch hunt involving Buffy, Willow, and Amy vs. the parents, including Joyce and Willow's mom. Love the Cordy and Giles along with the Oz and Xander team ups at the end of this episode to rescue Buffy and Willow.
Episode 3x12: One of my episodes of the season and series. We meet the head of the Watchers Council. Even though Giles goes along with what they have planned for Buffy. In the end he helps her best he has "a father's love" for her. Which is accurate. I've always seen Giles as a father figure for Buffy pretty much since the beginning.
Can't wait for the next two episodes.
And looking forward to the next reactions tomorrow night. 😊

The vampire in Helpless was played by the guy who played the Alcatraz killer in Charmed "The Power of Two" .

I always felt like the shows use of magic by Willow and Amy is perfect believable. They are young and new at it and still learning so it makes perfect sense that spells would go wrong or not as intended.

These were two of my favorite episodes that really stand out in my memory because of how much my heart broke for Buffy! Really enjoying this ride with you two!
It's not even that Buffy struggled for years to come to terms with her life as a slayer and what that might mean beyond high school... it's also that she's aware of the fact that many slayers didn't even make it into adulthood... and she's already died once. Just the reality that she lost all her abilities and was very vulnerable to the things she's been killing for at least 3 years would be terrifying, test or not.
And one has to wonder what kind of council would spring that type of test on young girls, especially when the "norm" is that they're stripped away from family and friends with only other Watchers guiding them. One might wonder if there's some other sinister reason behind that.
Sarah Michelle Gellar's crying as Buffy always gets me 💔 I remember being in total shock that it was Giles giving her the shots! But it was an ep that I remember genuinely feeling like a horror movie too 😮
Two incredible episodes back to back! I LOVED the whole Hansel and Gretel thing. So fun but so dark, and still relevant in a non-supernatural way today. Mass hysteria convolutes very real issues and blind people to the real evil. Cordelia has two badass moments in these episodes - first breaking that glass no questions to get to the fire distinguisher (also lots of Cordy funny lines that episode), and immediately saying "of course" when Buffy asked to take her home. Giles broke my heart with that betrayal and it is VERY sweet that it is now an open knowledge that he has a father's love for Buffy. I get that he had no choice but it would take me some time to fully trust him again if I were Buffy.
27:48 The benefit is control. It’s not about the Slayer at all, it’s about The Watchers. The test makes no sense: The Slayer needs to show she’s more than just her powers to pass the test. By that logic, you don’t need a Slayer, you just need to train people to be resourceful and smart when facing vamps and demons. The Slayer is The Slayer because she has her powers - Her powers are the only reason why she can fight vampires and demons. Without them she’s just a human. Most Slayers don’t live longer than a year after activation, and they’re usually activated at 14/15. In the event a Slayer reaches 18 she may not feel like she has need of her Watcher, and by extension, the council anymore. This test is a way they can either kill a Slayer they feel like has grown too independent, or scare her back into being firmly under her control. It’s almost like they’re saying “I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it”.
Helpless was a very good episode exploring trust and betrayal. Many were so angry watching this at the time that Giles could do such a thing. You can see the anger Buffy has towards both Giles and The Council, and yes The Council are highly irritating. This episode reminds us of course that Buffy is indeed human, and all the weaknesses and fears that go along with that. Even though she passes her test, we still feel cheated for her you can see Giles hates doing it too, and has nothing but contempt for Quentin Travers. This episode actually was a watershed for Buffy as she was now truly leaving her adolescence behind and becoming an adult. A very touching scene at the end when Giles tends to Buffy's wounds. A very good but disturbing episode.
That last scene couldn't have happened had Quentin not said why he was firing Giles. Those few words unintentionally saved their relationship.

Helpless is one of my very favorite episodes. It was a spec script submitted by Drew Goddard who eventually became part of the writing team. In his original pitch, Giles was fired but got his job back by the end of the episode. But the show runners liked the idea and made it permanent. As a fan, Drew was pretty horrified that he had actually got Giles fired!!
The third act of season 3 (and probably one of the best on television) is about to begin, be ready
The actor who plays Kralik the Vampie is Jeff Kober. He's one of the "it's that guy!" kind of actors. He's been in Buffy, Charmed, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Sons Of Anarchy and so on. He's an underrated actor in my opinion because no matter what show he's in, he fucking brings it.
Also I feel like your little head in the background is sometimes watching me, lol!

The actor playing the insane vampire was on Charmed He is Jeff Kober. He played Jackson Ward who was the serial killer ghost stuck on Alcatraz. Good catch. Yet another cross-over actor. The WB loved him.
Sergio is chattering away over an excellent Willow speech at 8:50 , but the look on Cody's face tells me he was picking up on that poetry. 😂 "You do doodle too..."

Yeah, I imagine that. Maybe 1 or 2 or something have made it to their birthday. I mean, if it's a time on or tradition, because how often must that occur? I think Buffy's technically already died, so she's literally passed her expiration date and an anomaly. Is she even under their council anymore, uncharted jurisdiction?

3x11 In my opinion, the end of the _Becoming_ cleanup.
3x12 My favorite moment was cut out of the youtube video. The look on Buffy's face as Travers says Giles has a "father's love" for her. It's the reason they will be able to get past Giles poisoning her, in my opinion. Considering the patriarchy The Council represents, Giles being fired was a good thing, in some respects.
At that point the council couldn't count on him being their puppet. And there was no way he'd fully trust them after this. I think because of his past as the ripper he overextended himself with them to gain their trust, but now he knows better. Buffy and the gang know about his past and they still trust him and look up to him, they saved him when his past caught up with him so he owes them his loyalty. I think Buffy knows he was also played by the council by the end of the episode.
Oh yeah, the Satanic Panic era was *especially* rough in the 90s. The West Memphis Three case from 1994 is probably one of the cases during that time that inspired this episode. Three teenage boys in Arkansas were tried for a supposed ritualistic murder of three young boys. Their convictions were after some *really* sketchy evidence and a big helping of the Deep South version of the Satanic Panic. One of the boys, Jason Misskelley Jr., was put under a harsh, solitary interrogation despite the cops knowing the kid had a very low IQ (low 70s, I can't remember the exact number). He was interrogated for 12 hours, but only about 40-ish minutes were recorded. He confessed, but out of not understanding and being terrified of the cops. He got life plus two 20 year sentences, one of the other boys got life and their supposed "ring leader", Damien Echols, got the death sentence.
Thankfully, everything came out about how badly both the cops and the jurors behaved in the case, and they got released for time served. Sadly, they lost 18 years of their lives because of this crap.
I think that scene where Buffy chases off the jock that pushed the goth kid against the lockers is supposed to be a shout out to the trial, as the supposed "ring leader", Damien Echols, was something of a goth kid.
And nah, Xander needs no wins after his "little lady" comment.

Biggest question in the second episode (which is very good, this isn't an actual problem to be clear) is where the hell did Kralik get all the polaroids for that camera at such short notice at night and then find the time to take that many pictures and do the whole shake to make them show up properly deal. Real organisational skills on that vamp.
Shaking actually doesn't help the Poloroid photos. That's a myth. So he just had to take photos and then post all of them... of course, as you say, he had to get the film. Perhaps he robbed a local store; those Poloroid kits were still popular at the time.
IMO a simply superb episode. One of the greats.
I agree with the test as a way to keep the slayer young so they don't have to deal with them and be accountable. Buffy is now thinking about going to college, will be getting a job and will possibly have kids. The slaying might become less of a priority to her, they'd have to pay her full-time. When you keep the slayer young don't have to accommodate her or respect her, as a kid she doesn't know much or better. You use her and send her on a suicide mission before she becomes an adult or realizes you're using her. They might also wanna test if there's a new line through her which makes you realize they care more about their hold over these girls than their safety and the world's safety. Giles went against the council once he realized her chances of surviving were slim if none. If it's tradition, why didn't Giles know about it? That's because they know the watcher would never go along with it.
In a broad view, the test makes a little sense in the respect that the Slayer shouldn't rely only on her powers, but there's no reason at all to keep it a secret from her. No wonder few slayers make it into adulthood.

Well, to be fair to Amy, the only spell that we've seen Amy conciously do on her own free will was getting out of doing her homework, which is wrong, but let's be real, what teenager wouldn't do that every once in a while if they could lol. The first time we met her, it was her mom doing the magic. When Amy did the love spell, she was being blackmailed by Xander about the homework, and then when she did the rat spell on Buffy, she was under the love spell, which made all of them ready to commit double homicide by the end of it, and she reversed them both while under the spell still...
The vampire in the second buffy was also one of the gods released from ice in charmed!

With Gingerbread we now know Willow also has a shitty home life, albeit in a different way than Xander’s alcoholic assholes. It makes the found family of Scoobies make even more sense.
Jeff Kober is always great. You guys may enjoy a 1990 occult thriller movie starring Jeff called "The First Power". He excels at comedic roles as well. Check him out as Booga in "Tank Girl". I don't want to spoil anything, but you made a prophetic statement about Xander during this reaction. You'll see soon.

Helpless is such a good episode. And I always say, I would have loved a spin-off with Kralik's backstory. He's such a fun villain. Also, I understand him - migrains are horrible XD
Also, since you guys like all the witch stuff, I have to ask, have you seen "Salem", the tv show?
Actually I think that there is an arguement to be made for willow being a lot more of a level-headed Which, she is into doing research and casting magic only after she really knows what she's doing or what she's going to be doing. plus she trains at doing little things sort of like magical exercise to build up her power. All of it makes her a much more responsible witch. I think with willow the danger is that like with the spell she did for angel... Since she started so young and while injured (important note* never do magic while injured) something in her is way more open to the magical forces(like she has less defences) and it seems like she is in control only until the point where she isn't and something else takes the will driving her body around/saying the words of the spells in languages she doesn't know/having an effect on reality without her realising. I'll remind you that she wasn't even sure if the spell for angel worked or didn't and I'm sure that even though the powers that be were the ones who saved angel it must have had something to do with the spell that was cast on him while the gate was open returning his soul seconds before he got sucked away.

@@oferarubas Absolutely! They aren't wrong about the addictive nature of magic in general though. Magic, while difficult to master, lets people do things they couldn't do normally, or do quickly and easily things that would take more time and effort to do without magic. That is very tempting stuff.
In a way, some modern technology is a lot like magic. Our smart phones and tablets now give us access to information almost instantly if we know how to ask the questions, where once we might have had to dig into the encyclopedia or slog through lots of microfilm of old newspapers and the like to get the same information. But the Internet also has a LOT of misinformation, biased websites that tell like-minded folks what they want to hear, etc., which means people may too easily be satisfied with the first answers they get even if those aren't the correct answers. There are a lot of echo chambers and a lot of pure craziness out there, sometimes digging up the real truth is hard.
Like with using magic, using the internet is fast and easy, but you need to be careful how you use it. The quickest fixes the quickest answers, those aren't always the right ones. And these kids are in fact still kids, regardless of how talented they are - not fully mature, not yet wise in the ways of the world. They are becoming adults - legally at least, at 18 - but they still have more maturing to do.
This show is just too darned good...
I don't want to give anything away, but I really think 3x13 should be watched on its own because 14 & 15 go together. They're not technically a two part episodes, but finishing 14 will make you want to go on to 15.
When those dudes started cat-calling Buffy, I think she felt too afraid to respond with her usual sass and witticisms. She basically was robbed of being herself and the audience is reminded of what most women have to deal with when they walk home at night, where walking past even seemingly benign men can be turn extremely dangerous at the drop of hat.
Gingerbread is considered a filler but I love it. It gives a lot of importance to Joyce, we see Willow mom, Cordy in action, Amy becoming a rat and the overall story with kids/demon brainwashing the adults.
I always find funny the writer for Helpless David Fury gave the idea of Giles being fired just to have a strong pitch for his first episode as a writer but then they made it official, Giles was really fired from the council.

Honestly, I think, it's a bunch of old English white men that have seen actual power, and want to take control (British trope), But Buffy is the ultimate female/american hero, She destroys that concept. Yeah. Historically, that's why the Slayers are female. So that they can be controlled. The assumption was that any guy who got that power would just automatically seize power. Not be an underling.
I think you should pause buffy to let the charmed ep count catch up then you could compare seasons too

The only thing I hate about the "Helpless" is that, it treats Buffy as if she hasn't been training almost every day of her life (past 3 years). Like, even without the Slayer powers, a person who is training that much should be able to do better physically. Even her coordination would not be as bad as they make it out to be. That and the casually sexist throwing like "a girl"...
All I I know is I watched a behind the scenes of some CW shows and this was one of the ones that was talked about. Apparently season three is when it popped off with the actors who played angel and Xander. Knowing that NOW. I’m like OK. A lot of things makes sense with how the season went down.

@@Frogface91 Nicholas Brendon has had a lot of issues in real life. It is sad, and uncomfortable to read about, but the information is out there if you want to delve into it. He definitely has some resentment against David Boreanaz, and there are different stories but it seems related to David getting the spinoff and going on to a successful career and Nicholas not doing so well. But there were apparently other issues as well. 😢

Satanic panic, oh god. My family was members of a certain church and as a young kid alot of things were forbidden. Voltron, dungeons and dragons, anime, rap, rock n roll, comics, garbage pail kids, nintendo, pogs.
All these and more were from satan to allow demons into your life and man it sucked big time! Parents would literally take those things and pray over them then burn them.
i love the birthday episode. its sad and scary but its really well done. the council sucks so much. and files does love her like a father, but he's not supposed to. and he betrayed her, which was so hard to see. ihate that he got fired. fuck the council. also her dad is awful.

the first episode was only a few years removed from the end of the Satanic Panic the swelled through the late 70s and blossomed into full swing in the early 80s...tapering off just before the 90s kicked into gear. It is a nearly perfect example of the random swells of hysteria that took hold, and the equally stupid conduct of normally rational adults that fell into the sway. Book burnings, clothing bans, music bans, etc etc etc. Once whipped into a frenzy, the saner people slipped into the background and numbly accepted that actions were being taken for good reasons, even if they seemed a little extreme. The episode Gingerbread still has its potency today...in this era of people freaking out over gay frogs/5G phones/transphobia etc. An old fashioned witch hunt is a big fave over meaningful engagement with other human beings, actual communication and the pain of actual thoughts.
Helpless, on the other hand, is a darker episode. Horrible to see Giles betraying her by following his orders from the Watcher's council, even if he hates it. I get the idea of making the Slayer test their abilities while limited to normal human strength...but pulling it as a surprise is just hideous. Love the Edgar Allen Poe reference tho...good reactions, always a pleasure!
"Helpless" leaves me conflicted.
On the one hand it's a well written and beautifully acted episode. Kralik is the scariest thing since Angelus.
On the other...the Cruciamentum makes literally no sense.
The popular "The Patriarchy wants to control the Slayers" theory is kind of nonsensical...the problem with the Council isn't that they try to control Slayers, it's that they ignore them. Exhibit #1: Faith. Exhibit #2: Buffy. For the last 3 years they've made zero effort to influence Giles' training or direction of her, or any of her actions. They never told Giles about Kendra, or Faith, or Gwendolyn Post.
Plus, the Slayer is a nearly priceless asset to humanity. Buffy has averted several world ending apocalypses and saved innumerable lives. In combat, experience offsets skill and training to a huge degree. Every fight that The Slayer wins makes her many times more valuable than a new Slayer. Living to gain that experience is the central issue, because the Slayer casualty rate is so brutally high.
Yes, few make it to 18. Buffy lasted less than a year before she was killed.
I think from a storytelling perspective the issue is that in Whedon's original concept, both Watcher and Slayer were reincarnated throughout history, thus needing no Watcher's Council. That was changed for the series. Perhaps the demands of a network TV schedule simply precluded the thorough development of the concept.

11:36 Yeah Joyce didn’t know what she was talking about. The Slayer’s job isn’t to eradicate the vampire race or demonkind as that would be impossible and in some cases - inhumane. Her job is to keep them in check. It’s like an ecosystem. The vampires and demonkind overall need someone to stop them from making the world like it was in Cordelia’s Wish Dimension, or the Prison Hell Dimension from the season 3 premiere. Essentially the slayer exists to stop the Demons from taking over and ruling the earth like they originally did in the Primordial times(Giles talks about this time period in the beginning of Welcome To The Hellmouth Part 2)
Most likely, the benefit of that “test” is that the slayer dies and they get a new one, who is young and easily controllable.
Banning / burning books, persecuting the dissidents (also known as the "others"), blaming minorities for crimes they didn't commit in order to justify violence against them. I love when shows and movies portray the rise of fascism, because sadly this is something that continues to be relevant to this day. And it's not a phenomenon only in the West, it can happen to any country / society, any time (specially when we let our guards down).
