      Subjectively, and as an actor, probably very difficult to cope with, but it does only affect the face (and surrounding head areas) and is usually associated with things like viruses rather than circulation problems.

    As much as I rag on Xander in season 3, I absolutely adore “The Zeppo”. It’s the perfect filler episode, the kind of thing we don’t really get now that so many shows only do 8-12 eps a season. Xander walking in on Buffy and Angel being melodramatic at each other, and being like “Alright…I’m gonna go…” is the funniest thing ever 😂 And the musical score! Perfection!
    Also: Yay! Wesley is here! My second favourite character of the Buffyverse

  • @badmannnnnn

    That Faith and Buffy Bronze dance is one of those Pop Culture legendary moments that Buffy spawned, famously X-Men evolution used it.
    Also one of the discussions that is always brought around in the Buffy fandom is how Gay Faith is during "Bad Girls", her fishing for Buffy to admit she gets turned on after a fight, Faith calling Buffy "Girlfriend", the love heart on the window, the skipping school to go on a day date to hunt Vampires then go to the club and the fact that when the guys approach them in the Bronze whilst dancing Faith chooses Buffy by holding her hand up as a symbol of her being the winner. This became such a thing that a fan asked Elisa at a Buffy Q&A if she purposely played Faith that way and she instantly admitted to it.

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 3 месяца назад +7

      Faith basically asked Buffy to be her date to the homecoming dance during Slayer Fest 99 as well. We can see Faith's turn as a result of feeling rejected by the one person she ever had feelings for.

  • @Shoofyou10
    @Shoofyou10 3 месяца назад +12

    I think The Zeppo is brilliant and some early proof of how self aware about the show Joss Whedon was. Having the melodramatic stuff happen in the background of a Xander episode is such a fun way to be meta.

    My commentary on Xander's cowardice and bravery. Xander is a coward when it comes to himself. But he is brave when it comes to the people he cares about. We see this both ways in this episode. When Xander knocks over Jacks food at school playing catch, we see his personal cowardice as he backs away and does everything possible to avoid personal danger. But latter, when it is about blowing up the school with his friends, he faces down Jack with a live bomb. No hint of fear. Xander avoids any sort of danger when it comes to himself, "I laugh at the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away." But he selflessly attacks people who attack his friends, and stands by them fighting things he knows he personally cannot defeat.

      I mean yeah, Xander's life is sad and his humour is disguising this but if you think the episode is sad you've kind of missed the point. This is Xander finding his courage and confidence despite all that. This is kind of the first steps to him becoming a man and I'm definitely talking about the boiler room not Faith. He's willing to die at the end, but not wanting to. There is a difference. You even see him breathe a sigh of relief because he did not want to die. If anything about the episode is sad it's how much he is being dismissed by the other Scoobies. Other than that it's not dealing with the things about his life that are sad. At the end he is happy and confident. That's what the episode leaves me with.

    3x13 One of my favorite head canons for Xander is one I never see Xander fans use and wish they did. The scenes in this episode with Xander are his POV of how he sees the world (which is why they are over-the-top and have broad music playing). The scenes without him are not his POV. He does this in every episode, we just don't always see his perspective I think looking at Xander this way shows that he percieves the world a certain way when things become a way he doesn't like. Not in a he's delusional way, but in an escapist way. And when somebody breaks whatever bubble he's escaping into that's when we see the anger and attitude issues.
    Concerning this episode, his escapism means it wasn't Xander's imagination that he was benched. So, I will always find it strange that the group benched someone that saved Buffy's life during an apocalypse/The Master tried to rise in S1. Other Scooby members have gone through situations that made the group bench Xander. Why weren't they benched when it happened to them? The group can be as upset as they want at Buffy running away at the end of S2 and the beginning of S3, but she saved lives in LA. Personally, I think she needed time away from Angelus, Angel, her friends, and her mom considering the situation between everyone with Angel and Angelus (and the situation with the law thinking her a murderer). It looks like Xander could use that type of time away from the group if they are willing to bench him for something like what happened in the teaser, whether or not benching him saved their lives. Same goes for the fact that Xander feels that "the quiet" isn't a bad option.
    3x14 I always found it interesting that the core elements of S3 main arc were background burnered until this episode while the first half of S3 delt with what I call _Becoming_ cleanup. In season one it's the series premiere, in season two it's Spike's introduction aka episode three, but in this season it was this episode.

    Buffy telling Willow she didn't want Willow to come slaying with her was because Buffy was ashamed of her slaying, for the first time. She wanted to hide that shame from Willow. Notice in the morning, when her mom came into the kitchen, Buffy was reading the paper. She was looking for the crime reports. To see if she and Faith were in there. We can infer this is the case, because we never ever see Buffy reading the paper. So, this is a new behavior for her. Also, Buffy folds the paper when her mom comes in, to hide from her mom what she was reading. Also, Joyce is correct. Waffles never have calories when you make them for your children.

    The Zeppo's still a favorite, not just for Xanders comedy...but also for the self mockery the show aimed at its own tropes, and for the unique direction. In Season 3, its really one of the most stand out stylistic changeups in the season. At the core of Xander's being, when the heat is really on...he can handle it. He may be a wreck the rest of the time, but in a crisis he is a hero.
    Bad Girls is great episode as well, for very different reasons...we see Giles kicking ass, Buff embracing the dark side of Slayer wildness, and Faith showing the inherent flaw of being too wild. All lead ins for season arcs that can't be discussed here...yet.

    Re: The Zeppo -- This is inspired by a 60's play by Tom Stoppard called "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" (a film version was made in 1990). It tells the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet, but from the point of view of two minor characters, the R&G of the title. The play focuses on them, and when the plot gets to a point where they were in a Hamlet scene, Hamlet and other characters appear, do the Shakespeare scene and then leave. Part of the idea is that everybody is THE main character from their point of view.

    I always really loved Zeppo. We have had Xander centric episodes before, but this is the first time we see the world through HIS eyes. Normally, we see the world through Buffy's eyes. Which, as the titular character is to be expected. One thing that exemplifies that we are seeing things through Xander's eyes, is the Buffy/Angel scene. It is so over the top dramatic. Much, much more so than normal. That is because we are finally seeing their relationship as Xander sees it. In a way, this is similar to Giles, normally we see him as sort of bumbling and clumsy and a poor fighter. But then the Halloween episode comes along, and Buffy isn't Buffy, so we see Giles as he really is. As a strong fighter with a dangerous, mean streak to him. We saw that again earlier this season between Giles and Principal Snyder. We saw that at Ethan's shop because Buffy wasn't around to color our perceptions. Once again, Buffy wasn't there in Snyder's Office to color how we saw that interaction. So, going back to the Angel/Buffy scene, they are not *actually* that dramatic. That is just how Xander sees their relationship. We also got to see exactly what Faith was talking about when she said Slaying makes her hungry and horny. Well, the second part anyway.

    "The Zeppo"....Marx Brothers... Comedians / actors from the EARLY 1900s. Groucho (the most famous) along with Harpo and Chico made up the main trio. Gummo left the group when he was drafted into WWI, he didn't return after the war as he decided to go into business instead of theater. When he left he was replaced by their youngest brother Zeppo. Zeppo was in the first five of their feature length movies (out of 14 between 1929-49) but left to become an agent. Gummo and Zeppo never developed their stage presence like the trio.

    I think The Zeppo was a brilliant episode reminiscent of the Martin Scorcese film After Hours from 1985, where the main character has crazy nightmare night getting caught up in some strange underworld he can't get away from. The Zeppo refers to one of The Marx Brothers. Groucho, Chico and Harpo were 1930s comedy legends, their brother Zeppo was considered useless in relation to the other brothers. This episode is so well constructed as we have two stories side by side, but Xander's story is the one we focus on and what would normally be the main story is sidelined. The part where he loses his virginity to Faith is also handled well, as it shows how people can hype this up as really big thing in their life, but the reality is that it is often overrated and really is so unimportant in life in general, Faith showing him the door straight away is comic genius reiterating this. The final part is great too where Xander is now not bothered by Cordelia's insults and put downs, as he know he has saved the school on his own and has grown as a person. It's so well written showing the transition towards adulthood for Xander.

    "No, you don't get it. I don't care [but actually I do care. I care a lot, and this is my mask face because I am scared shitless about what happened]"
    Faith did care. She was washing that shirt, the way Lady MacBeth washed her hands. "Out, damned spot!" If Faith really didn't care, she would not have returned to the body. Notice how scared she looked in that scene. She hid the body to hide her shame over what happened. If she truly didn't care as she claims, she would not have returned to the body. She would not have tried to hide the body.

    Cordelia reading Xander! 🙌🏼 Faith/Xander? 🤮 Hellmouth chaos! Snarky sassy watchers 😂 What in the Jabba the Hutt? 💀Slaying vamps & the dance floor! Double slayage is always 🔥 Mayor’s ascension can’t be good. Interesting to see the differences in how Buffy & Faith approach hunts. Faith is so impulsive while Buffy is more cautious. Not the PTSD of the master drowning Buffy. Oof that ending. I like Faith but come on girl. Loving the reactions y’all 🖤

    Bad Girls was a watershed episode where all what we suspected of Faith comes to fruition. We see her influence on Buffy leading her down the wrong path. Buffy as we know is very much a good person, and rejects this way, but even though Faith kills Alan by accident, as we know it was all her fault due to her psychotic behaviour, and she just doesn't care, even when Buffy begs her to do the right thing she says she just doesn't care, having weighted and dumped Alan's body. And of course we have the introduction of Wesley!

    Watching Buffy as an adult I identify with Zander the most😂😂😂😂shocker. Faith Spike Drusilla and Anya are my all time favorites....bold daring and they all dont give 2 fucks lol. Growing up I was Xander half cool/half geek. I had 2 girl best friends. I got picked on for being little until I into lacrosse and track. The tough guys who bullied me I see them in public we like the best of friends. People evolve and change and grow and Xander did grow up a lot.

    In the Zeppo opening, a lot of things are slightly off. Giles is wearing a sweater, Faith kills that demon girl somewhat sloppily, and so on. The idea here was to make those things appear kinda blurry, out of focus... because they are out of focus for the rest of the episode.

    Angel can smell that the blood on Buffy's hands is human.
    Wesley either is immediately disliked because he's not Giles, but others have warmed to him and he has great character development.
    This is is the ep where you see how faith's energy compared to Buffy's is very different. Buffy wanted to let go a bit but obviously things went to far.
    Side note: i met David Boreanaz last week. So handsome and lovely.

    The Zeppo is one of my least favourite episodes of the series purely because they tried to make Xander this "quiet hero" to redeem him ig cuz of what he did to Cordelia. She was right - he IS the most useless member of the Scoobies. They'll say "he's the human factor" or the "heart" of the group but really?? I didn't like that he barely wanted to apologise to Cordy previously and now it's like "oh she's just being a mean girl and I really do have value and none of her words mean anything". If they really wanted to redeem Xander, have him actually grow as a character. That being said, I forgot how funny this episode is. Left a bad taste in my mouth but it had some funny one liners and transitions.

    Interesting fact: Faith was actually supposed to die at the end of Bad Girls. The guilt of killing a human was supposed to weigh on her to the point where Buffy finds Faith's body, having hung herself in her hotel room at the end of the episode. I am honestly glad they changed their minds and let Faith live because you get a lot of moral implications to being a Slayer.

      One of the problems with behind the scenes stories is that several people involved with the writing and pre production have changed, altered,or created stories based on their audience and challenges about money . One thing that’s is certain that Joss Whedon has multiple plans, many storyline options, and personal gain motivations. We know the shows are the final facts and after that….. accept them all and wonder what if?

    • @GordBalle
      @GordBalle 3 месяца назад +5

      @liteflightify iirc the writer of the episode Doug Petrie said the original plan was to have Faith end her life, it was either in the episode commentary or one of the behind the scenes features on the dvd. There's alot of dropped early drafts from the shows run, and nothing wrong with fans mentioning or discussing the "what if's" of the early development.

    Zeppo Marx was the 4th Marx brothers. He was semi handsome but did not seem to have any natural talent nor comic presence. The most famous and best Marx Brothers movies all included Zeppo with Groucho, Chico, and Harpo. When the Merx Brothers were signed by MGM to star in movies , Zeppo was not. included simply because he seemed unnecessary. The Marx Bros. movies were never as funny, popular, or entertaining. This was created the term Zeppo Effect. It’s a person that seems useless, not very talented, and does not seem additive to a group yet when he is removed, the group- team does not have the same success. That’s Xander… can’t be explained but it works.
    Bad Girls is a major part of the series long study of duality of the individual. We have explore this with Angel/Angelius, Willow, and of course band Candy with Buffy and Joyce. With Faith and Buffy this episode illuminates how 2 Slayers , chosen ones, can be so alike yet when it comes to choices and values… it’s 2 sides to the same coin. The examination is the classic anthropology study as well has the nights- nature debate. Buckle up for 8 excellent episodes and they will be even more superb watching your reactions. Great job and thank you for helping to make Fridays a gas.

    Yes, your BtVS reactions are so good!!
    The Zeppo;
    Ugh, here's that Xander centric episode I always skip. 🙄 (Sorry, not sorry) Just another apocalypse averted. 😅👌Buffy and the rest of the gang in the background is interesting and the little cuts to them and back to Xander is funny tho. I just don't like Xander. 😆
    Bad Girls is another favorite EPISODE! Pretty iconic quotes in this episode too! "WANT. TAKE. HAVE." - Faith
    Faith is a very intriguing character and I love her and her flaws. I felt so bad for her when she accidentally killed Allan.
    Enter Wesley Wyndam-Pryce! He's very silly, posh and by the book. 😂 The character is a fun addition to the gang and makes the dynamic fun. Especially most stuff between Giles and Wesley because Giles is so annoyed and sarcastic around him.
    "Is he evil?" - Buffy Anne Summers not trusting the council or new Watchers and rightfully so. 😂
    Balthazar is a very yucky-looking demon! 🤢
