@@Dreaxes Except you don't get one game with a VR set, you get an entire console's worth. It's like saying "imagine only having Uncharted or Bloodborne justifies getting a PS4"
One important thing I've noticed in this video: The combat level design and combat systems themselves are specifically designed with VR in mind. One of the problems I see with a lot of VR combat is that they drop players into a standard map, like one that you would see in a normal game. What this means is that there's usually a lot of higher cover that must be peeked around, which doesn't lend itself to VR (since the chest is not tracked - only the head and hands are). So by designing a map that forces more crouching and ducking makes the VR better. Also, the amount of physics interactions is great. Using a car door to block bullets is something a normal game really can't do because that would require a dedicated button or other system to make use of, which might interfere with the player's vision or sacrifice other abilities to allow that functionality. VR excels with player freedom, and I'm glad to see Valve taking advantage of it. This is also compounded by the amount of pick-up-ables and actually throwable throwables, like the grenades. Having a system that rewards the player for interacting with the physics system will make them a lot more likely to use it. In addition, a common problem for VR is when a player is forced out of their covered position, like when a grenade is thrown into their corner. In a standard game, it's not difficult to quickly move the camera back up to the exit and sprint out, but in VR this becomes a lot more difficult. By allowing a player to prevent a scenario like this from occurring, there's a lot fewer wonky motions to get out of danger, which I find myself doing quite often in other games.
@@Jmcgee1125 Car doors were dumb but port-a-John doors? Come on. I think penetration is more of a fun game mechanic than being able to use everything as cover.
As someone who only recently started playing VR you don't fully understand the greatness that is happening by watching the gameplay on a flat screen and never experiencing VR before it's only after being in the *_metaverse_* that you truly see it
It's really true though. Everyone who hasn't tried it thinks It's a gimmick, they won't understand until they actually try VR. Every single one of my friends was like this, and they changed their mind as soon as they tried it for themselves.
@@ArodoraaSFM to be honest, I use VR from the start and I still think it's a gimmick. Let me elaborate. Generally, there are two kinds of VR games: VR experiences (small games that play cool in VR but doesn't offer enough content and/or gameplay depth) and VR ports (big AAA games with VR literally tacked on as a gimmick after the fact). The first category is nice for a week or so until the novelty factor wears out and it stops being exciting. The second one is impressive but rarely playable (seeing Fallout 4 world in VR is cools, but I can't imagine somebody actually completing the game like that). I'm probably more nitpicky than most of the users, but after using VR since Oculus DK1, VR just for the sake of it doesn't do anything for me... and without that, you start to see a lot of technical limitations. As far as immersion goes, so far, nothing in VR impressed me more than something like God of War on a nice 4K HDR TV. That being said, Alyx may be just what VR needs - an actual AAA game made specifically for VR. Now that is interesting. If the game is as good as it looks... it won't be enough to push VR into the mainstream, but it will definitely show that the format is viable. Anyway, I really hope Valve can resume Index shipments in time for the release, I want to experience the game the way it's intended to be played.
@@bezrodnyigor yup. VR is a gimmick and ived played every game there is for it. Its simply not well enough made and overpriced. Also bad for your eyes and gives migraines.

Until now I've never realised, that HL2 actually has an art style. I always considered it a game that tried to reach realism, but was blocked by the technology of its time. Now when I see all the added details, effects and technology, it is obvious to me, that HL2 didn't just use the best technology for realism. It used it to enhance the chosen style and it still does it now, both with better graphics and by being a VR title. Not all game series' can say the same.
Half Life 2 introduced HDR into gaming for the first time, exceptional Lighting and shadows, even the realism of ragdolls also it introduced character AI to be able to show facial expressions and carry what feels a personal conversation with the characters. Before HL2 paved way for a lot of what is gaming today, HL isnt just a game, its the introduction of a new gaming era... Welcome HL: Alyx the new gen is finally here
Give thanks to Viktor Antonov; the unique and awesome art designs of Half-Life 2 and it's episodes were designed by him. The fusion of the Combine's jet black utilitarian industrial metals and machinery and decaying Eastern-European factories and warehouses is still something that looks and feels unlike anything else to this date, save for the Dishonored games (which were coincidentally also artistically designed by him). I'm so glad Valve is sticking to his designs for this game as well.

The metal is too thin to stop pistol bullets though, but this is in line with how it worked in HL2. I wonder if they will add penetration for weaker materials (drywood etc).

Reddit moment
These sound effects bring back a lot of memories...
Most games don't have car doors to block bullets, mostly because car doors can't block bullets.
@@MT-yd3yc Realistic or not, it's a fun game mechanic. Half-Life isn't exactly a purely realistic series.
@@Jmcgee1125 Car doors were dumb but port-a-John doors? Come on. I think penetration is more of a fun game mechanic than being able to use everything as cover.
@@MT-yd3yc So in a game about an alien invasion of Earth, you care about the realism of bullet penetration?
Lucas Kriger It can be fun, just not in this one.
As someone who only recently started playing VR you don't fully understand the greatness that is happening by watching the gameplay on a flat screen and never experiencing VR before
it's only after being in the *_metaverse_* that you truly see it
i read meatverse at first and i was like oh that makes sense because meaty and 3d and it feels chunkier then i was confused
It's really true though. Everyone who hasn't tried it thinks It's a gimmick, they won't understand until they actually try VR. Every single one of my friends was like this, and they changed their mind as soon as they tried it for themselves.
@@badusername723 welcome to the VR meatverse

If you never realised HL2 had an art style, you never paid attention to the game then
Even HL ALYX has an artstyle.
Welcome HL: Alyx the new gen is finally here
@@javsld568 Great comment!👏
Give thanks to Viktor Antonov; the unique and awesome art designs of Half-Life 2 and it's episodes were designed by him. The fusion of the Combine's jet black utilitarian industrial metals and machinery and decaying Eastern-European factories and warehouses is still something that looks and feels unlike anything else to this date, save for the Dishonored games (which were coincidentally also artistically designed by him).
I'm so glad Valve is sticking to his designs for this game as well.
