Bike Licence Categories In The UK

  • Getting a bike licence in the UK can be a bit confusing when you start learning. There is essentially four types of licence, AM, A1, A2 and A.
AM and A1 are in my opinion are the type of licence you would go for if you really needed at full licence at 16 or 17 years old, i.e work related. To save costs I would recommend doing your CBT and waiting until you're 19 and doing your A2 which would allow you to apply for your A licence at 21 rather than 24. It all depends on the individual and the individuals circumstances

There's one thing I forgot to mention in the video. In order to start training for your bike licence you will first need to apply for a Provisional licence. If you already have a car licence you don't need to this and can start training straight away and make sure that if you're doing your A2, check the bike you're planning to get is able to get restricted down to 47bhp.

If the DVLA made sandwiches, they'd make you sit a theory and hazard perception before they let you eat it. Then make you wait til your 21 to advance from egg mayo to spicy chicken.

Got my A license today. Mod 1 no faults . Theory with 48/50 and 68/75 in the hazard perception. Mod 2 first attempt one major on positioning on a dual carriageway. Mod 2 second attempt clean pass. First thing to say. Put aside at least £1,000 for the process to include the hours you’ll be on the bike to get ready. Some riding schools in my area have intensive courses that cost £2,500. That basically takes the license out of reach for many. The testing system seems like a good way to force people to learn to ride properly. But my God it’s expensive. My bigger nerves on the mod 2 was that I was forking out £150 every time I was going for it. So my first failure really upset me and my pocket. I wish the system was cheaper but the US system is maybe a step too far as you’re basically getting cbt and then can get 1000cc monster.

Such a hassle nowadays...In 1986 (at 17) I only had to do Part 1 which was off road exercises around cones etc and then Part 2 on road. The examiner stood on a street corner and couldn't see you for half the route! That was it for a "full" bike licence. When the A1/A2 etc came in (1997??) went automatically onto a "full" A licence by default. Not ridden for years (the wife won't let me) but happy days...feel sorry for people going through all those tests nowadays

A very important detail that almost fkd me up- because I left it so late; The MOD1, only lasts as long as the Theory. I had 35 days left on my Theory, and then I booked the das course, so I basically had to pass both mod 1 and 2 first time, if not I'd have to start all again (minus the cbt)... luckily it worked, but I wouldn't recommend leaving it so late, the stress and pressure is a lot. But when it paid off(in my case), it was amazing. Good luck everyone.

Got my category A license in 1989 in Southampton UK. taking part 1 offroad on a moped and part 2 onroad limted to 125cc, I had to sit out part of the offroad part of part two as my steering lock on my bike wasnt large enough to make the turns around the cones (MZ 125). long before all this CBT and Theorey test stuff started to happen but ive often wondered if it has made a difference to safety for Motorcylists on the roads or do you think it was just a cash grab when it came out?

There’s a lot of drivers of cars that also have their full motorcycle license combined and when they send their licenses away for either a renewal or change of circumstances their licenses are coming back with no motorcycle licence on,but the DVLA in all their wisdom says they don’t make mistakes, well apparently the amount of drivers this has happened to is in the very high thousands and they have to resit their motorcycle driving licence, highway robbery

So many groups and options. Just looking at my licence and it has listed AM, A, B1, B, C1, D1, BE, C1E, D1E, fklnpq. All expire in 2041, start date 1989. I have no idea if I need to do anything to retake any tests due to changes. I still drive a car, but have not ridden a motorcycle for 15 years which was 1000cc at the time. I am considering possibly riding again, but unsure as to whether I need to retake or re-apply for anything.

One little thing I'd add about the am license is that if you've got your car license and do a CBT it automatically updates. So for example since I got my car license and did my CBT I automatically got an am license, so it can also be useful if you need to save money on the fuel prices nowadays whilst still getting about!

I have a full no restrictions MC license. Where I currently live. I contacted DVLC. As a visitor. I can ride any bike I want. If I take up residence I have a year. If I want to get a MC license on my British licence, I got to do something called direct access.

is there anything more difficult about the test when doing a full A instead of A1? I am old enough to do any of them, but really only plan to get a 125 for the forseeable future, but I don't really see the point of getting a A1 if I could just get a full A, unless the test would be vastly more difficult.

As a P.S. to newbies who've never even driven a car, never mind a motorcycle - LEARN HOW TO GEAR DOWN FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS!
If you stop at traffic lights in 4th or 5th gear and keep your steel horse in neutral by holding in the clutch (!) then you'll be holding up traffic trying to find 1st gear when the lights turn green - in 5th gear, the bike won't even move unless it's a V-Max or a ZZR 1400! So, learn to gear down GRADUALLY if you have to stop at something you can see in the distance - roadblocks, traffic lights, nudie sunbathers (Eh? Ed.) etc! Gearing down TOO quickly and you'll get thrown over the handlebars....

Hi , I got a question for you , hope you can help. I'm 69 yrs old been driving a car for ever but never passed my bike test. Well I'm going for it now so i booked the CBT. My problem is i went online to get a quote for insurance for a 125 but one of the questions was , how long have i had my provisional licence. I might be thick, but I dont know how to answer that. As my car licence is full it acts as a provisional, but I've had that for over 50yrs ...see my problem. Great vids watch every one. Stay safe. Cheers.

so i'm turning 16 next year and i was wondering if i just did the CBT at 16, ride with L plates with a moped without doing the full test , then when i'm 17 with a 125 to complete the full test. Is that possible or would i have to do the full test and then again for the 125.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  3 года назад +2

Hey, Midnight. If you want to do your cbt when your 16, you can ride about on a moped with L plates without doing a full test, but when your 17 you'll need to do another cbt if you want to ride a 125 geared bike. Again, you don't have to do a full test to ride a 125, just a cbt. You can do a full A1 test at 17 for a 125 but you'll be restricted to a 125. You would be able to take off the L plates but it means doing theory, Mod 1 and Mod 2. What I'd I do if I were you is to hold off until your 17, do your cbt on a 125 geared bike, then ride the 125 for 2 years until your cbt runs out, you'd then be 19 and qualify for the A2 license. For the A2 license you will need to do a full test but you'll have more flexibility on what you can ride. Basically a 600cc or similar restricted down to 47bhp. Then after 2 years you can then sit your full A unrestricted license at 21 instead of 24. Either way if you want any of the full licences before you're 24 it's going to involve doing a few sets of tests. That's why I'd recommend the A2 route unless you just want to keep renewing your cbt every 2 years until you're 24. It can be a bit confusing when you first look into it but if you need anymore info just ask. Apologies for the long message. 🙂 🤜🤛

Hey, Josh. You have to either have completed a CBT or had an A1 licence for 2 years before applying for the A2, but it really depends on your needs. The only real benefit for the A1 is you can take off the L plates, carry a pillion and ride in the motorway but you're still restricted to a 125cc. It might be handy if you have to commute via motorway.
