My first gen3 sp was a 2021 and I went to R1 and sold the sp, then sold the R1 and went to a s1kr ....guess what...ive now gone back to a gen3 sp but a 2023. absolutely the best all around and most fun bike ive ever had, from the way it handles to the way it performs, im 6ft 1 and its super comfy for me, when I ride I go out for a full day. hands down the best bike ive ever owned!
Great review. I’ve ridden the Gen2 SP and own a standard Gen3 MT-09. Miss the cruise control at times and limited adjustability of the rear shock, but these are minor points in the smiles per kilometre segment. Keep up the good work and I’ll see you out on the bumpy Auckland roads 😂
I have the identical bike. If you are only getting 160 k out of a tank then you are a very naughty boy. You are right about the brake. Late in a track day session at Manfield was very very fadey. I put some better pads in last night. See how that goes.

I went with a 2024 SP. It's been a while since I had a decent bike but I'm getting the hang of it. I've backed off preload front and back and so far taken 2 clicks high speed compression out of the front. It's better but probably still a little harsh on the wonderful roads around West Auckland for me(82Kilos). I haven't ridden an earlier model but so far find the brakes very easy to use. I prefer to have the bike in rain mode if I'm stuck in traffic as it tames the throttle response while still being responsive if asked. Love the cruise control and navigation on the dash with phone connection.
I find I run around commuting in mode 2 of 4 and at times 3 in traffic. As far I know the ‘24 modes are named differently? Mode 4 being a rain mode on the gen3 and it’s quite lazy then.
I have a 23 09SP. If you want to improve comfort, the following 3 hacks will help. 1) Put front suspension on standard as per manual. On the rear, turn the preload 2 x 360° from minimum. Set both damping selectors to their min. setting. 2) If more comfort required, try Michelin Road 6's. 3) If more comfort required, and riding 1 up, run rear tyre 10% lower pressure than manual says. - You can also try different preloads and you may find a slightly higher settings to be more plush than a lower settings. (Counter intuitive I know), but the relationship of spring rate to damping is not perfectly linear across the range. Good luck.
Have a 22 SP (gen 3). 14000 miles in 2 years of bliss! have had liter bikes (naked and superpsorts) and the MT is the most rewarding overall and entirely more day to day useable. Also have a street triple RS (22) which definitely is sportier, more committed but not as good as an all around bike though fantastic in its own right .
@@captain_midlife Do you have a video tutorial of the setting and your editing flow, camera settings, gyroflow etc...? I just boguth an action 4 and i'm looking to get similar results with ND filter.
I have a 2023 SP09 and I'm totally over the moon with it. I believe it was well worth the upgrade from the Gen2 bike. I don't believe that the Gen 4 bike is worth the upgrade, but if you are in the market anyway, it's worth considering. Higher cost aside (great deals on Gen3's and less long term depreciation). The Gen 4 is fractionally but noticeably better in ever aspect, except perhaps 3. There is less legroom but probably only an issue if you are very tall. In spite of the acoustic grills, the new bike is quieter. The suspension is firmer. Nothing was flawed on Gen 3, but dash, switch gear, quick shifter, throttle response, and turn in are slightlt better on the new bike. Plus intergrated navigation. The looks (my opinion) are better and the bike looks better finished (old bike was more naked).
@@captain_midlife It's seems the main issue with the Japanese bikes brakes is the ABS plumbing and the way the ABS software is calibrated. From a fade perspective, check that you aren't unintentionally feathering the front brake. This can without knowing generate a lot of heat in the discs. There is a hack to disable the ABS. I had a 2005 1200 GS which you could turn the ABS off. When off the stopping distances were noticably shorter. (Risk in emergency situations though).
I have a Gen 3 also and really can't justify an upgrade to a Gen 4. Now in a few years if they make a MT09SP Y-AMT with a next gen AMT (talking to the 6 axis) i'll upgrade.
Get EBC brake pads and the brakes will be great, it's a basic upgrade for any yamaha, stock brake pads are rubbish. I currently own a 24 MT-09 and they feel spongy and weak. I'm getting them changed for EBC FA252HH next raiding season.
I think for comfort, performance and value its one of the best bikes out there. Not the best looking thing out there but I dont think about how it looks when im on it, who cares.

My sk1r got stolen so I'm looking at an Mt09 when looking at bikes it was between the Mt09 and s1k and went with the s1k

To improve the brake feel, move the brake clamp on the handle bars 1cm to the left.
It’s more the brakes just aren’t that powerful and they fade quickly when riding hard.
@@captain_midlife Adjustment adds power, but won't help with fade. Sounds like you give your bike a real workout.

I agree about the front brakes, they are just ok but not that good either. I've heard that just changing the pads makes a good difference !

Triple engine are always fun and you can make full use of it anytime. Powerband is sweet and depends your riding style.

With the osmo action 4 do you shoot with fixed shutter speed with the ND filters? if so what value do you use to avoid the stabilizator freaking out
I shoot 1/50 but I don’t use the stabilisation. I use gyroflow

I might try get the brembos off a gen 4 and upgrade mine I prefer the look of the gen 3
Maybe different pads would be a cheaper and effective remedy for fade.
