john russo after your 4th or 5th tire it’s like tying your shoes, invest in a stand and good irons and you’ll save big bucks! if your cheap like me that is...
I used to take like 2-3 hours to change a tire (specially the rear) because I was doing it *very* wrong. This time I did it along watching the video. Literally 20 minutes and I was done, no joke. Oh, and I used a big cardboard box instead of a proper tire stand. Never thought changing a tire could be so easy. Thanks for the video!
Hey, used your video to teach my boys how to change a rear tire on a FE 450 today. The process was flawless and we all learned to do it the easy way. Thanks a bunch.
Big help. I will be changing my very first tire using this method and yes....I ordered the tire and heavy duty tube from Rocky Mountain! :) Edit: So I changed the front tire of my Honda crf300l today in 45 minutes flat after watching this video and taking a few notes. There were a few small details which I missed but it got done and I was thrilled with the results. It was my first tire change ever! Thank you Rocky Mountain! BTW I will be purchasing that long curved iron. I now see and understand it's value. :)
I just did my first ever tire change on my 300l today (front)! Unfortunately I didn't watch this first and had some difficulty but got it done. I used a heavy duty tube that had two nuts and a metal shoulder on valve, I guessed that shoulder and one nut goes inside rim and the other goes on outside of rim , I couldn't find any info on this. Anyway I will balance tomorrow and tackle the rear. Went with the Pirelli Rally Cross on front and have the Dunlop 606 for rear. Also added rim locks
Can’t wait to change my tyre for the first time in the weekend. Hopefully it goes well Update: absolute pain. Pinched the tube. Stress, blood, tears and bruises. Ended up going to my local shop and they finished the job and did the front tyre for £8 each ($10). Never want to experience that again.
The key is a good set of tire irons and a good stand. I just changed my front wheel by myself for the first time and wow! no pinch flats!. I bought 2 of the curved type tire irons and two of the straight type.
Thanks, Rocky Mountain. I've mounted and unmounted 100's of bicycle tires, but it didn't prepare me for my recent experience changing a tire on an electric unicycle. This saved me from saying "F it" and taking it to the shop. Your tip about the drop center saved the day.
Followed these instructions with my son to make sure I didn't screw it up. Took us about 25 minutes using the tusk tools on the tailgate of my truck. Good learning experience for him and a good refresher for me. Thank you.
I HATE changing dirt bike tires almost as much as I dislike cleaning air filters! If I take 10 min and watch this video each time, I find the process to be much smoother and most of the time I avoid pinching the tube in the process, lol. All the small tips add up to success! Thx RMATVMC!!!
The most important part of all of this is to take your time and go easy. Make sure when you start you have an hour or two. If you run out of time leave it for later. I’ve done 15 or 16 of them over the last 10 years or so. Pinched 2 tubes and both times I was in a hurry and not paying attention. Best advice is to put a little air in the tube. Just enough for the tube to hold its shape. I’ve never pinched a tube that had a little air in it. This video is exactly the way I’ve always done it. Once you get the wheel inside of the tire it pops right out.
Great advice. Patience is the key. When you see these videos knocking them out in 10 minutes, it could warp your perspective. Unless you've changed as many tires as they have, it will NOT be fast. Take your time, don't rush, and know that it will probably take you a while. Like an hour or two, or more. And if you have to walk away, walk away. Keep your body comfortable and cool, and if you have to continue tomorrow, so be it. Great advice hoffmanshaven.
Appreciate you! My mistake was STARTING with the beadlock. Many pinched tubes and f-bombs later, I changed my brute-force approach following your technique of saving the beadlock toward the end allowing my knee to force the tire into the rim on the opposing side: butter....
i just wanna thank you for that technique of putting the tube inside the tire with a little pressure in it. made it so much faster and easier. in the past ive punctured so many tubes but not anymore
that was the difference for me as well. it was impossible to get the tube valve through the rim hole if the tire was already on. This technique of "tube valve through rim hole FIRST" enabled me to do the change. thanks !
Thia was is a good video. I just did front and rear on a KLR 650. I took me a Day and a half. No pinched tubes! I was Lucky! Not a sign of skill. But now my speedometer doesn't work. So I'll have to fix that.
A BIG thanks for this. I only have limited experience of changing tyres, and I have just changed my front and rear tyres today using this method. I don’t have the stand or the rim tool, but it worked a treat on the floor. And it was far quicker and easier than I imagined. 👌
Piece of cake! Sure makes a big difference having all the tools you guys have in the shop, if you don't have them get them. It's worth your time and frustration. I like to use the old tire for that wheel as my base to work on. Works a treat and doesn't take up extra space!
Yo this actually helped me do my first set of tires last night. The tusk tools are really cheap and useful, just focused on being slow and careful and got both done in about an hr and a half.
Great video got mine off and new one back on no problem. Took me 30 minutes first time going back on with three straight spoons. I love The curved spoon and the other tool you had there. This is essential stuff to know how to DJ
Fantastic video showing how to correctly change a tire (OR tube...) on a dirt bike.... When all else fails, a good size bucket works as a stand... And my personal preference for lube is a nice water/soap mixture... One of the main things that many people may overlook is the actual spoons that are used. Screwdrivers may work trailside, but if you purchase a good set of spoons it makes this 100% easier :)

Dustin, you are the Man! This is my 80th Spring! I previously did the insane struggle method...your method with your tools (Tusk 3-pack) (Plus my BeadPro set) make changing bull tough rear knobby changing as easy as melting ice in the desert! Thank you times infinity!
This really helped got front tire on in 45 minutes only almost gave up 3 time then moved to the back time worked on it for 2 hours and just about gave up but just at the end we still didn’t get it on.
the first time I tried this, I thought perforated inner tubes would enhance tire cooling, at highway speeds. I went through like 3 of them. Then Found out its best to do the tire change while you watch the video.
Tips- let the tires sit in the sun a bit so they are soft. Cold tires are hard and not fun to work with. Windex also works for tire lube. When installing tube tube, inflate until your finger barley puts a crease in it when hanging. I place a trash bag with a bottle of baby powder dumped in it into a bucket and shake it. Helps powder the tube.
First rear tire success, was a little touch and go at the beginning then I soon learnt that small amounts at a time is the easiest way while making sure the opposite side of the tyre is squished into the rim giving you just another gap to get the bead over the rim!! Thanks for the video
Thanks so much for this video, you guys have the best place to learn and buy all things off road!!! I was worried about mounting these Tusk Dsports as they are so stiff, i used baby powder on tube and windex for lube, worked perfectly.
If you get a nail in your tire and have to change the tube, do you also have to repair the hole on the tire as well with those tire plugs - like those they use for tubeless tires? And if so, at what point to you do that - before or after the tube change? is it better to use the bacon strips kind of plug or the slime?
No plugs, just take the nail out and put the new tube in. I always check the inside of the tire to make sure everything is clean and nothing else is poking through. -Charles
newbie here with a question for ya'll, the final step is to snug the valve nut up against the valve cap, is this correct that the valve nut doesnt get tightened against the rim? thanks in advance for the help!
Ya, I just learned in the last 48 hours (after 20 years of riding) that the nut is not supposed to tighten against the rim, but rather against the cap, to keep it tight. Tightening the nut to the rim increases the chance of the tube ripping at the valve stem. You'd think this would be more readily available info. ;)
Thanks for the great video. You did a great job explaining why you were doing what you did. The two things that helped me the most were: 1) more lube 2) drop center, that really helped get the bead over the rim
I also use baby powder on the tube, and inside of the tire, to help the tube move around and take it's shape while inflating. That way it doesn't roll over on itself and possible pinch flat. Just an extra precaution. I also inflate it just a little bit so I don't pinch it against the rim while installing the tire. Nice video. I loved it.
People who know how to do this make it look so easy. Without experience, trust me, it's NO JOKE. The first tires I replaced were PW50 tires. I almost cried, destroyed the old tire, and started to bend the rim. That was without tire irons, and destroyed almost every screwdriver that I had. That was without any video tutorials, but I BARELY got it done. The next was front and rear on a KX85 after watching a few tutorial videos, like this one. I didn't almost cry, but I did sweat like a SOB, and boy was I tired. I'm psyching myself up to tackle front and rear on a 2002 XR250R. Let's see how this goes. I know it will NOT be easy, but I feel confident that I will get the job done. I've got a little experience, 4 tire irons, and even more tire replacement videos watched.
Thanks for the video. followed your instructions and changed both tires on my 23 CRF300l rally without problems. The front bead doesn't seem to want to seat 100%, no matter how many times i mess with it, maybe riding it on the dirt will seat it 100%?
As a 14 year old who has changed 3 paddle tires and 5 different knobies I have learned if you are grunting and cursing at a tire you're doing something wrong
Another really good tip is to warm up the tire, let it sit in the sun for a little or put it front of a heater. Makes the tire softer easier to stretch!
So i bought your spoons and a Shinko 804 for my DR650, everything went smooth and fairly quick, with a heavy duty IRC tube. But seemed like about a 5 inch spot wasn't fully seating when i inflated it, that line on tire was giving me a hard time popping out. i deflated several times and finally ok, never heard that pop when inlflating though, would you have a words of wisdom on this? thanks
*Double x* - Did you tighten your rim lock down before inflating? That usually will cause the 5 inches you're seeing to not seat. If that wasn't the case, what you ended up doing would be the way to fix it by deflating the tube again and maybe even applying more tire lube to the 5" area and then reinflate. Thanks for watching our video sir!
Threw a iron at the wall, tore two tubes, roached two sets of clothes, scratched the wheel a lot, and took 13 hours before I gave up. Pay someone else.
lmao its really not the hard if you have the right tools and actually pay attention to what the guy says. the rim is designed to allow the tire to come on and off easily, you just have to use it the way its designed
I spent a shit ton of time changing a tire tube just to accidentally pop it when seating the tire on the bead. Then have to wait 2 weeks to get another one because rona has all the shops closed.
@20Ian Jury Did you use a set of screw drivers, forget to apply baby powder to the tube, forgot to partially inflate the tube, did not lube up the walls of the tire, or failed to look where the tire iron was seating the bead of the tire causing a ripped tube? Get the right tire irons, bead tool, partially inflate and baby powder the tube (get a Ultra Heavy Duty tube for beginners), and avoid touching the tube, should be pretty easy under 45 min.
Installing a Tubliss/AT81 tire so I can ride tomorrow on my te300. Last time I tried this was on my SX250 and it took hours just to end up pinching my tube giving up to my local dealer 😂
It looks like the wheel rests on the spokes. So when you are putting your body weight on the tire to break the bead are you just putting pressure on the spokes?? or is there something underneath that is letting the hub take the force?
Hahaha easy peasy lemon squeezzee even an old man like myself can change a dirt bike tire now because of this video! So many whiny soyboys, if you can't handle doing it yourself just take it to a shop and pay the bucks while eating your vegan lunch! Thanks for the great upload Rocky Mountain ATV, my only beef with you guys is that you started charging sales tax in California lol 🤣
How come nobody else's tire change vids said what to do with the rim lock? I have a stupid ass bulge at the rim lock. Google, push this video to the top!!!
Many times I seem to get a bulge in the sidewall of a freshly mounted tire right at the valve stem. This makes for a lump as the tire goes around. Does anybody know how to prevent that and once it's there how to get rid of it? It seems to happen often on soft carcass tires such as shinko 241 and others. Thanks
The sidewall? Hmm, this could be entirely different than what you are thinking but... Sometimes the tube gets hung up on the bead by the valve stem. When mounting, put the valve stem nut on a couple of threads and make sure you can push the stem in. If it doesn't push in, it's hung up so pull the bead back with the spoons then push it in. -Charles

Facts lol
Just went through this. Took me like 2 hours too, just to find out I got a pinch flat when filling it up.

Another pro tip for breaking the bead is to ride the bike 15 miles home on a flat.
🤣🤣🤣😂🤣
Facts right there I had my tube pop so I road it a little bit harder and boom the bead wasn’t seated no more
Hey that's what I did yesterday I was no where near my pick up
I did that but it was an accident tho
It also weeds out the weak spokes which is a definite plus

the first time I tried this, I thought perforated inner tubes would enhance tire cooling, at highway speeds. I went through like 3 of them. Then Found out its best to do the tire change while you watch the video.
Great tip! lol thanks for watching

Tightening the nut to the rim increases the chance of the tube ripping at the valve stem. You'd think this would be more readily available info. ;)

Thanks for the video, I’ve struggled for years to know exactly how to change a tire and or tube.
Great step by step video. My 11 year old son used it to change his dirt bike tire without any help.
Following along with video, 5 mins to remove tyre for the first time and 10 mins to fit one. Thank you!
Thanks for the great video. You did a great job explaining why you were doing what you did. The two things that helped me the most were:
1) more lube
2) drop center, that really helped get the bead over the rim
Wait, 10 minutes and no cursing? Fake news!
Ha ha! Having the right tools for the job makes ALL the difference!
thank you so much for this video this was 100 times more in depth than others and suddenly I stopped swearing and was calm and it worked.
I also use baby powder on the tube, and inside of the tire, to help the tube move around and take it's shape while inflating. That way it doesn't roll over on itself and possible pinch flat. How do you get the bead to seat evenly? Everytime I blow it up the bead rises one 1 end?
same for me
Finally got it done, thanks. Didn’t have the proper tools but it still worked

I just changed a tire and installed a heavy duty tube that had two nuts on vlalve stem. Im guessing one goes on inside of rim and one onside ?
I know im late but for anyone reading this: yes. One nut inside one outside
Best tire changing video and the best comments for sure!
Great video. Very helpful. Are the steps to change the front tire the same as the steps to change the rear tire?
Yes they are. Front tires are easier to change too.

Do you leave one of the nuts inside the wheel? Or just the one that holds the valve
There should be one nut on each side of the rim.

Of course you do a demo with the Michelin Starcross tires. Much easier than others. lol
I spent a shit ton of time changing a tire tube just to accidentally pop it when seating the tire on the bead. Then have to wait 2 weeks to get another one because rona has all the shops closed.
Same thing happened to me. rip 33 dollars I have the tire done just a popped tube
Same
Multiple times
Yup, round 2 tonight. I think partially inflating the tube will make it easy.
There is a center rod that goes through the hub to help hold the wheel.
Obviously this How-To Video was meant for me, considering I’m also installing a set of Starcross Mediums on my RM-Z 😂🤘🏻
Perfect! Glad it helped out!
What if the bead isn’t perfect? What about if didn’t came out just in one small part? Does that affect something important or is just aesthetic?
About to change my first dirtbike tire. I’ll update on how it goes.
A tip for everyone is that before you start you should heat the tire by putting the tire in the sun or standing it in front of a heater.
Thanks for not explaining that taping on the bead locks can't be too tight... super helpful >:(
The washer that comes on a tusk tube.....where does it go? inside or outside??
Much easier after watching this video. Thanks!
How come nobody else's tire change vids said what to do with the rim lock? I have a stupid ass bulge at the rim lock. Google, push this video to the top!!!
*Jackson Buck* Agreed. Come on Google! :) . Glad our video helped you out! Thanks for watching.
This helped me with drop center part I didn’t do that before and makes the prices much easier
What spray is being used for the tire bead? Thanks in advance.
That is the Yamalube Tire Mount Lube. The first link in the video description will have all the parts and tools used in this video.
@@rmatvmc Awesome! Thank you. Won’t lie to you guys I didn’t read the description haha.
You can use a rubber mallet and hit it on the last bit, saves leaving marks on the rim with the tire levers.
Extremely informative great job.......
Why did you back the valve stem nut back out to the bottom of the valve cap?
Easy peasy! Just takes time, patience and practice!
-Charles
You guys are such an awesome source 👍
Thanks for this video! I wouldn't have been able to do it without it!
Glad we could help!
Great vid. Took two hours. Box ticked. If I can avoid it, I will never change one again.
Glad we could help. Thank you for watching.
I ride the Dunlop d606. Believe me, it isn't as easy as shown in this video!!!
Most definitely the most helpful video there is out there thank you
Awesome video! Super helpful.
Thank you! Your videos always help so much
How do I correct a bead that won't seat? One side of wheel is fine the other is sunk near the bead lock. Tia
