How To: Change a Dirt Bike Tire | Motorcycle Superstore

- Want to save time and money? Want to be a dirt bike badass? Then change your own freakin' tires. Motorcycle Superstore's front man walks you through his preferred technique for changing a rear tire. JC covers the tools necessary and explains why he prefers specific ones. He demonstrates how to perform the work and talks through the reasons for each step. This video is great for beginners or experienced spooners so feel free to share it if you find it helpful.
Is it the absolute best method? Probably not, but JC learned the basics and then started tweaking the process as he discovered new tricks and tips that work better. You're here, so you're on the right path. Watch other videos, talk to riding buddies, and when someone is doing a change don't stand around like a wanker, pay attention or help out so you can glean as much info as possible. Once you try several techniques, take the best of each and blend them together.
Changing motorcycle tires is a pain, but the more we ride, the more we have to deal with this regular maintenance. Rear tires are much more difficult than changing a front, and unfortunately they need to be replaced more often. Don't sweat it. It's not as bad as you think. Like with any new project, the first few times are tough, but once you develop a few tricks it'll be easier every time. Eventually, you might even enjoy it. That's what JC discovered after years of spooning new and used tires. Once you become even mildly proficient, tire changes require far less time than it takes to remove the wheel, drive across town to a bike shop, wait around, drive home and reinstall.
Sometimes you don't need a full tire change, just a tube. In that case, simply pull one side of the tire off the rim, yank the old tube out, stuff in a new one and then proceed as described. Aside from wheel removal and installation, the same techniques apply to changing the front tire.
Remember, if you're fighting it, you're not doing it right. Relax, push that tire down into the rim well and take your time. Oh, and have at least one spare tube on hand because you will pinch it at some point!

Good call with editing out all the swearing and throwing things!
GeddyMX yup
Changed my first tire today , alot of yelling 😆
And pinching the tube as I did last week changing a tyre myself for the very 1st time.😭
It was when you said "if you're willing to be a man about it" that I decided to give it a go. I used all the basic stuff just like you did to see if it was possible, and I had never changed a dirtbike tire before. Seriously, this video is spot on! So much easier than I thought! Thank you sir, and thank you Motorcycle Superstore!

Moto Jordan Right!!!!! I commented on the same subject. Hella funny
This guy doesn't skip any steps like most videos, very well done.
Tè4a is so good Dad can be zzz h😂😂
I've watched at least 6 different tire changing videos. I watch one or two videos every time I need to change another tire, and this video is THE BEST BY FAR. Best pace, detail, the fact that you didn't use a stinking tire changing stand that nobody has. Well done sir! Thanks
Just did my rear tire for the first time. Tire irons-check, tire-check, murderous rage- check. I was ready to throw the tire across the yard, after a lot of swearing and sweating I got it done. Glad I did it instead of paying someone but my blood pressure was up. Cheers.
It get's better, Frank B. I'm staring at a 17-inch rear tire off a KLR and I know that bastard is going to fight me. - jc
Motorcycle Superstore Same here lol... Im about to try to put on a Shinko 705 130/80/17 on my '14 KLR. Wish me luck, as this is my first bike tire change attempt. I dont even have an air compressor, but i DO have a tank of nitrogen that im hoping has enough psi left in it to complete the tire change lol.
@@motorcyclesuperstore Tell me about it. I just changed the 17-inch rear on my DR and it is always a b*tch but I like your method of getting the tire off the rim
Great video on a tire change. This guy did a really good job of explaining things without screwing up hardly at all. Give the guy a raise so you can hold on to him as an employee. You can just tell he's got lots of potential as video demonstrator.
Thanks, Gary Smythe!! I'll bring your comment into my yearly review ;-) - jc
This is a very well-done video with a great presenter. My son and I change our own dirtbike tires, including studded ice tires, and we always refer back to this video to freshen up our technique before tackling the job. Thank you!
Young man you did an excellent job explaining this!!!
I'm 65 years old and I have battled several times
installing tires on my Honda XR650L!!! I think the key
for me was doing it on the ground. You can put pressure
with your knees and get better leverage!!! I also liked the
part where you used a bicycle pump to air it up!! I always
carry a small one with me!! Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you!!!
Wow.....best video presentation I've seen ever!! I'll be watching maintenance videos done by that guy again!! Great job
Thanks for the instruction video, it is really well made. Loved the level of detail, the pace, the tone. You did a amazing job with this.
This is my favorite tire change video. I’ve done tons of tires using this as a guide. Works every time!
Thank you so much for being so thorough. I tried my first tire tonight with only tools shown and it really wasn’t bad. This helped a ton. Next one should be no problem.
Great advice. Wish I had of watched this two weeks ago before getting a flat trail riding with a mate. Lucky for me my mate was not only proficient in changing a tube, but he also had the right tools (and a spare tube). The point you made I liked the most was the one about making sure you leave the spacers on the same side as the wheel when you remove them. I ride a 17 yr old XR250 and realized (after much swearing and sweat) that the spacers are different sizes and had tried to get the rear wheel back on with the spacers on the wrong side.....DOH! I also discovered that I didn't have a rim lock on my rear tyre (the reason for the flat) so it was off to the local shop to have one installed. Again, great video, and thanks.
Nice video! Very professional, no music to drown you out, no flogging someone "Brand" of tools, etc.! I have only tried to change a tubed tire once. After pinching two brand new tubes, I took it in to the dealership! Will buy spoons, instead of the irons I have, then try again! Again, great video.
Wow, one of the very best instructional videos I have seen. Excellent guidance, camera work and teaching cadence. I’m doing this, when it gets warmer, but I’m doing it!
I’ve changed about a dozen tires and I always come back to this video. Saved in my vid library! Thx!!
Best tutorial for trailside repair! Changed numerous tires this way, never a pinch flat. Thx
This guy has helped me master changing tires. Just once in a while I rewatch this video to lock it in. But this guy is great with showing all the details to getting it done!
JC, Thank you for this awesome vid. Used your method and was succesful in changing both front and rear. Had to sweat and bleed a bit to get the Sand Paddle rear to break bead, but after that your advice was spot on! The Motion Pro tire spoons were the best. Thanks for the killer vid!
I've been waiting to hear a real success story! So glad it helped, Robert Stronach, and kudos for gritting it out. It gets easier every time, I promise. One tip for getting old knobbies to pop off the bead is to ride around for a few minutes. Take a few psi out and it helps even more, just be careful riding on a low tire. It generates heat in the rubber and softens the sidewall. *Not* something to try with your paddles since riding on hard ground will destroy them pretty quick, but it might help the next time you grab the spoons. You can always remove the wheel and put the whole thing in the sun, too. Sometimes they're just going to make you bleed no matter what! I had to leave it out of the video but a cold beer helps with the sweating and bleeding part... - jc
Great video! I really struggled the last time I did a tire change but I watched this video and did it in no time
Enjoyed the "Less is More" approach to all this, Just showed how super dooper modern fancy stuff isn't always needed, Thank you.
one of the best dirt bike tire changing videos I've seen. keep it simple stupid. straight and to the point with everything you need to know. thank you!
Awesome! Thanks JC and Motorcycle Superstore for this great vid! I'll be changing my first tire in a couple days on my new dual sport. This video should help a bunch!
The best video of tire changing so far! I myself got them monster tire irons, amd they have been giving me hard time, so i better go grab myself some better, slim tire irons! Great tips!
Love this video! The most thorough and explanatory one I have watched.
Excellent and informative video. Nice presentation, smooth, and clear.
Nice, I like these "How To" videos, I love learning about Motorcycles
Excellent video. As far as motorcycle maintenance videos go, this is one of the best I've ever seen. Pronounced presentation from a guy who clearly knows what he's doing. Thanks for the guide MMS, JC. Giving me all the more reason to keep buying tires from you all.
Bob Hannah Wow, thanks, Hurricane!! Wait, wrong Bob Hannah... Oh well, still glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching and shopping with us. - jc
Motorcycle Superstore I was lucky enough to see him race at Unadilla back in the Seventies:)
Professional video. Good stuff. You cover everything. Now i have confidence to do my tires.
Best video I've seen on the subject! Youre very clear and concise!
Very helpful. I just mounted my new rear tire for the first time using your video as a guide.
Thanks for an awesome and very helpful video. After ruining a tube during a tire change I started from the beginning and worked along with this video and success!!!
Good video. Thanks. Did my first KLR tire. Never done a tubed tire in my life on a motorcycle as I've always had street bike tubeless. Followed the vid and did it my self. Thanks for the pearls of wisdom. Oh, and I got my tires from the Superstore at great prices.
Great video. This is the way I have always done it my whole life. One thing I do at the end is before putting the valve back in the tube is pressure the tube in the tire with a compressor and bounce the tire several times around its outside to help seat the tire.
Thank you ,,, this will help more than any other I have found
Thanks for this video. I watched it a few times, got some spoons and Windex and changed my own tires! This video was the key. Michelin AC10s on the Honda CRF250L dual sport. Thanks bro!
thx JC - excellent production and great attitude.
Thanks!!! for your video I watched several videos, your video helped me more than all the other videos put together. You didn't push any products and made it as simple as possible, I changed both tires it wasn't easy but I was successful.
best info video i have seen in some time. this guy gave me the confidence to do it and it worked step by step perfect...thank you!
Very professional and well spoken young man. Great job👍
This is the best tutorial for changing bike tires that I've seen. Everything he says works.
Best tire change video out there. Not trying to sell a bunch of crap. Just good info. Thanks.
Nice..Best tire change vid I have found.I don't have tire irons but some old big screw drivers..Never had a problem. No cuts, tears, regreased my bearings.Tire sits right on nice..Thanks for the tips.
michael cochardo You, sir, are a stallion. I tried screwdrivers once and I shredded everything. Nice work. - jc
So many good tips! Love that you did it without any special tools. Thank you!
Thanks for the well done video. Waiting on the tube to be delivered and then I will try this.
Just changed my rear tire following this vid!! Thanks for the great information!!
Changed many tires but have learned a lot from this. Perfect!
Best tire changing video I've seen for a home mechanic, thanks!
great video... seems like patience is key. my and my father were working way to hard, and being maybe a little too aggressive with the tire today and ended up popping the tube... gonna try ur method tomorrow!! great video
nick ruggiero Good luck! Let me know how it turns out. - jc
Great tips and advice. Great tutorial using old school 👌
Yup, just got a nail in my tire about 1-2 hours outside of town. Valve stem sheared off, had no extra tubes or tools to change the tire. Luckily I had a person I could call to come pick me up. This is definitely helpful, as a newbie.
Thanks for the vid!!!! I just changed my first tire with your instruction. Start to finish less than an hour using the same tools.
+grey man Nice! ~Aimee
Had to say thank you, man. First time I've ever done this and you made it easy!
I'm a cyclist looking to get into motorcycles and i stumbled upon this video. The over-over method you describe hear is way easier than pulling the tire to one side the way i've been doing it for years, great tip. Its weird it never occured to me, guess its one of those things that are obvious once you soeone shows you. Anyway, thanks for the video
Thank you for this! It makes changing a tire look more doable!
Great instructional vid. Covered all points including the ones I got from local bike shop. Covered my situation as I don't have fancy tools. This guy explained it well, easy to follow and understand. Chur Cousin.
Great job! Nice to hear and see a young man do a job and not worry about his hair or nails.
Great vid, and presentation. I have changed a few now and it is always hard. My tyres were very hard to get the valve in and watching that part again popping it off on opposite side did not help but fiddling with a lever in that way let me get to a position to get it in. I tried as an experiment over on both sides to try to get the valve in but then you cant get the rest of the tube in easily. I did not put in the tube first. I put the tyre on and then put in the tube, pump it up a little as I find that reduces chance of pinching. Took me a few hours though. I have watched tyre guys here play around with the bead to centre the rim when it wont pop on the bead in on a tubeless. Loosen it all off work tyre levers in on far side of bit that wont pop and loosen it a bit. Guys who do this everyday get really good at reading how to push the tyre around to make it easier. Also degree of difficulty is changed by size of tyre and stiffness of rubber. Yours went on easily and you can get your hand in for the valve but mine were much stiffer. Anyway never give up and you get better with practise and having good levers helps.
great video quick and to the point, thanks for the knowledge
Your video was the best so far. For instance nobody mentioned the difference in the axle seals. I can see the advantages of doing it on the ground rather than on top of a bucket. Thanks.
Well done and the tips were very helpful.
Excellent, informative tips about what to do if tire won't seat properly all the way around, and not going past 90 degrees so you don't pinch the tube.
Dude thanks so much I've saved so much money learning how to do this 👍
Awesome video man. It must be just me though because I'm always having problems changing tires and/or tubes. If I had a moto shop near me I'd have absolutely no problem bringing to them to let the pros take care of it
Great job. Thanks for sharing the info.
Thanks broski your video helped out a lot for my first time changing my own Dirtbike tire it worked perfectly!! Mad props man
The best dirtbike tire change video on youtube! Thanks!
very helpful video. another vid.I saw said to take the rim lock right out. wish I watched your video before doing my tire swap!
Good on you for showing it with the rear tyre. Most demos use the front, which is way easier.
I have to watch this for a refresher every time I break out the tire spoons. Thanks!
Good video. Using hand tools, on the ground. Just the way I'd have to do it in the paddock. Thanks heaps.
Great info!! Thanks for the tip. You know what you're doing.
Nice tip there to put on the tire with the tube inside. Thanks.
Best part about this video was the end when he says "be a man about it"
Simple tools and a little sweat. I like it.
This is the best instructional video I have ever seen and I don’t just mean tire changing videos. You may disagree with a few steps because they can be done differently, but you will not find better instruction!!!
When putting it back together I put the tube inside the tire as you did, but put the valve stem in the rim as you put the rim in the tire - saves having to put your hand inside the tire. I also use baby powder inside as it's a lubricant and allows the tube to move around in there - good when you only run 6 pound pressure in trials.
Ruined a new tube because I didn't use your "over-over" method.
Well done and thank you.
Really excellent video, I have changed several tires in the past but honestly would just wing it and cuss up a storm eventually getting it done. It has been a few years since I have had to change one out, but will be doing so with some tires I just ordered up from you guys. I think the tips in this video will prove to be very helpful.
Good luck this time around, mactheknife801. Don't underestimate the importance of quality cussing. I recommend it for the therapeutic properties alone. - jc
a bead buddy tool once you set that last side on is a big help... also using a tire changing stand is a big help, allows you to put weight into the side without the whole thing moving. Doing it on the ground like this really sucks
Just got
The tube I ordered love the stickers and the tube. Thanks
Good video man. One ofcthe better tire tutorials for sure.
Excellent presentation and so professionally demonstrated. I have all those tools but unfortunately still somehow managed to pinch 2 brand new tubes and my old tube as well.
Don't know how that's happening. Have another tube I sent away for but am afraid to try and fail once again. Planning to take it to a motorcycle shop for them to do it.
So sad, I really try to help myself whenever I could but get frustration. I am able to do a lot of things on my own but I guess I was born under a bad sign, I'm a jinx to myself.
Thanks for making this very informative video. ✌️
Did this today, technique was real good but then some how I snapped the rim lock and now I have to try and fix that. Thanks for the video any way
Most helpful video I found! Thank bro.
Good video - I like the way you can use the ground for leverage & with a few tools can save $$$...
Was easier doing it on the floor than on the bench like I was trying to do. Thanks good video
Absolute best video on this subject! Thanks
I like the tip of warming up the tire !
Good concise practical instruction. Well Done.
great vid buddy fair play easy and quick
Good points about noting directional tires and using copious amounts of lube. I'm hesitant to spray lube on the spoke nipples because I don't want anything slippery near the bead lock/groove. Also I never saw the "double out" bead method before -- when you were removing the old tire, you pulled the bead outside the rim on both sides, then dropped the whole rim inside the tire and pulled both beads off from the other side. Genius.
What’s cool about the Windex is it doesn’t leave any soapy residue! This is actually what we use when trying to get tight Tygon hose on medical instrument fittings. I’m surprised that some instructions on RUclips indicate the use of butter; I find that recommendation both nuts and dangerous for rear dirt bike wheels that are probably gonna be around 20 to 25 psi. 🎉
Great video. Hopefully I will get the hang of this and save a lot of money by not going to the shop. Thanks again
Man, after watching your video and a few others I decided to change my 21" front today. Had one hell of a time getting a MT21 on. It's on though and the tube has been holding 30# for about 7 hours now so I think I'm good... and I went on a quick 5 minute test ride. I'm seriously reconsidering the 18" rear. If that's "harder" it's probably worth the $25 the shop across the street from my office charges.
Really appreciate the video!!
Excellent how-to video. I just showed my youngest son how to change the inner tube on his bicycle and I don't think I explained it as well as you did.
David -
Thanks for this informative video. I've done tire changes without the benefit of your guidance. Nice refresher. You make it easier. I particularly like doing this myself for safety sake. Years ago, a buddy and I were riding in the Mojave Desert and his front came off at speed. Disaster, as you can imagine. He ended up caught up on a barbed wire fence. I had to unpin him from the barbs. Could have killed him but, fortunately, the barbed wire did not connect with anything critical. Turns out that the brand new tire installed at his friendly moto dealer was done wrong. Overleveraging with the tire iron broke the bead and off came the tire when he reached 40 mph.
Stephen Denlinger That's horrible! Another good reason to DIY. Thanks for sharing. - jc
Best tire video I’ve seen. Thanks
Happy Tool-Time Tuesday!
Do you mount your own tires? If you ride a dirt bike, might as well save some cash and change those rubbers out on your own! Bonus: You will be a dirt bike badass.
Our man JC walks you through the finer points:
You didn't mention the yellow circles, red dots, or balancing. Do you not worry about any of that? I ride a dual sport. Maybe it's not important on a dedicated dirt bike.
Motorcycle Superstore or as he said “ be a man about it”
Awesome video
THIS video my friends is the best one on RUclips. Everyone always misses a step that he does in this vid. Watch this vid and compare to others !!
