Hey great video, I just bought an old Transalp with spoked rims so this video really helps! I was wondering if you dont have a garage at home and minimal maintenace equipment. Does owning and maintaning a motorcycle become easier at home and travelling by having a centrestand? or is a portable motorcycle jack more useful?
@@philsc6028center stand, very useful in many circumstances.
Actual rim lube makes a hug different and is well worth the few dollars to buy it. Saves time and is safer also.
I caught how at the start you placed your rim protector between the tire and lever. It should be between the rim and tire iron. We all have made an error when doing tires. Lol.
Another tip: you can use a c-clamp to keep the beads clamped together and down in the center of the rim channel on the opposite side of where you're working the tire irons to get the bead over the rim.

Thanks for the helpful hints! I learned how to change my own tires when riding a motorbike in the mountains of Germany. My secret is to keep water on hand. It always helps! 🤗👏💪

I use a shovel to break the bead. Works every time and it’s free. Also windex works great for lube
Ian, You make it look so easy. Having watched this video, I'm ready to try it myself, especially so I'll be confident doing it on the trail. Heck, years ago I watched Bronson straighten his front forks over an open campfire! (That was an old 1960s TV series about the ultimate adventure biker. Check it out.)
Thank god its just not me that find changing tires hard, huffing and puffing! The rear tire is really heavy when you have to flip it around the stand.
Thank you for the tip about the center channel, i will try this next time instead of forcing it with the bead breaker.
Last rear i changed was to the Dunlop Trailmax Mission and good god that sidewall is so stiff, im sure you can ride that without air... I do not loop forward to remove that.
Hey Ian, are you still using this tire machine? Anyway if you haven't already, make a designated stand, anchor that to the ground, say 2 ft. high and about the same diameter as the base of your machine, then bolt your tire changer stand to it. If your working at waist height the ergos are great you can use your upper body weight and strength more, and when the machine is fixed its not moving around on you. As always great videos, love the noisy car part, lol.
hmm. i'd cut 4 inches or so off the tire changing gizmo. can't see why the spindle (?) is so long?
Many rear wheel hubs on street bikes are much wider than this bike's front or rear hub and need the long spindle on the changer.
For atv wheels
Looks like a good workout Ian! (As long as you don't get bloody knuckles. 😁) I'm just back from the dealer, got my front tire off, but then got stuck at 1/4 of the final bead not seated on the new one. The stiff TKC70 wouldn't stay down in the "trench." Need some hooks or clamps to keep it down there for next time...

My biggest challenge is not damaging rims. My 1200GS rims look horrible from all the scratches. The rim protectors did not work well for me

Like someone else said, it's very important to keep both beads inside the drop groove. I will state the obvious one time. The diameter of the rim is larger than the diameter of the bead. Use your knee (if the rubber is squishy enough), a clamp, anything the keeps the beads together. I'm noticing that some of the tire irons on Amazon are coming with rim ptotectors and clamps. Just food for thought. It doesn't need to be that hard.
great video: most street bikes have a double balanced kick stand.. / the back tire off the ground... / add a brick for weight on the seat/ now front tire in air :>)... DAWN dish soap is what dragsters use to keep tire from spin on rim! it dries and glues on tire to rim = B- to remove.. but dont slip or leak... use alot soap .. 6 table spoons to like 12 oz bottle water! .. if u got old rusty rim.. wire brush it.. then add tire rubber sealant! no leaks air ever! luv this stuff!
tried this method and it works great ... only changes were I cut that center bolt down to the top of the wheel center hub and I used Silicon slippery spray on the wheel rim and tire inner circles.... oh yea cheated by using cable ties also 175 lbs prf
Question about what if tubes? Based on your reco (why didn’t I didn’t think about that) to carry tubes for tubeless tires in case you have to deal with more than a puncture. Do you have to carry a tube that is the same spec/size of your tires? I ride a Touareg 660 and I cannot find tubes that fit just right so I am thinking that maybe close is good enough. I know this is probably a rookie question but at 62 years old I have no more time to learn the hard way.

how does it not leak air being spoked wheels do each one of the spokes have a rubber o-ring ?

Never seen a pressure gauge used when seating the bead. With small compressors, leaving out the valve can help get enough air to seat the bead. I've never not had a bead go pop when seating. I'm sure I could hear the paint being scraped off the rim!!!

I didn't cover that, but most people will want to balance. I usually skip it.
Great vid Ian, tk! Marc Parns makes a sweet balance rod, it's actually machined in spec. I use glide, its an auto clay lube diluted 10:1, I spray, taking it off, putting it back on, and spray for the bead seat....works like magic
I learned a tip from another video. For the front, tighten the pinch bolts on one side first. Then bounce the forks up and down a couple times which aligns the forks correctly then tighten the other side pinch bolts. The video said if you don’t do this, the forks can be slightly off center which puts pressure on the fork seals and can cause them to fail sooner. I’m no expert but seems like sound advice.
Check fork alignment by sliding the axle through both forks. It should move very smoothly, no binding.

I change my own tires, 1, because a friend got the local car shop to do it, and they were fit crooked, 2 , because you might have to do it on the trail, so build up your competence by practice at home. My tips... always use soapy water for lube, and Cable ties ! about 5 for a 19" rim. Works a treat. Videos are on RUclips.
Great video again, but you didn't balance the tyres? Is this not necessary for dirt bike tyres? I've always balanced road tyres...
I’ve always changed my own tires, or only does it save a little cash, it’s too inconvenient to go to a shop, minimum 30 minutes each way.
The tire changer looks kinda dangerous with that bolt sticking up so high impaling yourself could really happen if not careful

Brake calipers are hanging free! Never do this on a bike or car. You must support calipers so as not to damage your brake hoses!
