- Emma Slade, author or 'Set Free' and founder of the charity 'Opening Your Heart to Bhutan', talks about her path to buddhist, and the situation in which she found herself which caused this change. Emma was previously a successful investment banker and talks about the dichotomy between her current life and her previous occupation, and how this has allowed her to view the world in a fresh light.
Emma was born in Kent and was educated at universities in Cambridge and London. She had an exciting international career in finance which she committed to with mental drive and a tasteful selection of suits. But a deep seated desire to enquire into the deeper aspects of what it is to be a human being was brought to the surface following a life-changing visit to Jakarta, Indonesia. She resigned from her financial career and began travelling and exploring yoga and meditation. Since then she has taught yoga and meditation for over 15 years and continued to deepen a life - long interest in Buddhism.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
Buddhism is an universal philosophy ..... not a typical religion
wait can buddhist fly?
Mikhail eru They have a Fortnite profile pic. What can we expect?...
Its funny most westerners have to almost invariably mention that this or that is not a religion...
... if there is acceptance for everything ... then why not show some compassion to the word "religion"
Its more like a way of life...
They take Buddha as their teacher, a human ... and not a god...
@@marcus.the.younger but what is the need to mention it...
The statement could be - "Buddhism is an universal philosophy". Seems like a complete sentence.
The need to mention the last phrase, "not a typical religion" - is somehow weird.
Because, you are disregarding all religions in one go. Well, didn't Buddhism teach acceptance.
Ooops... they are just running away from something ... since their early years.
Think about it deeply before responding mate.
Active duty Navy, I found myself surrounded by marines. I fought to the best of my ability. You are a fighter just as I am, Buddhism has saved me. We owe nothing yet we owe everything. Siddhartha would never ask for anything from us. We survived.
I’m active duty female marine, and I’ve found I’ve come to desire and perfect half of these practices without even knowing about Buddhism. Looking forward to doing more.
Being a Buddhist is a great relief for me in this life. I am from Sri Lanka.
JOHN 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
JOHN 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
REVELATION 3:20-21 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
MATTHEW 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Hi, greeting from Jakarta, Indonesia. I am a Buddhism Practitioner. Agree with her speech, Buddhism is not just a religion, but it is a way of life, which called Dhamma (in Pali) or Dharma (In Sanskrit). You have to practice it in your everyday life. Buddhism never force somebody to believe it until you come and see for yourself, which called Ehipassiko (Come and Prove it). Hopefully someday, we can invite her to have a dhammadesana (spiritual speech) in Indonesia.
Much respect to this woman. Sacrifices are what makes you a buddhist. Its hard but to see a woman of endless possibility strive for something else than monetary gain is astounding. You are awakened. You have become Buddha
MonkGoneGamer it's possible but it takes more than the sacrifice of money to become a Buddha.
I like this
@@enlightenmentandphilosophy Yup.
It seems that leaving everything behind isn't a sacrifice, it's running away from responsibilities. I'd love to become a Buddha right now but who's going to do everything I have to do. I can't even go shopping as I'm needed 24/7 every single day. How becoming a Buddha can help the society? I really don't know anything about it. I thought it was a religion but people here say it isnt, it's a way of life.
@amila Ss you're not kind.
Buddhism is the law of nature. Right way of living.
Never has, never will be.
How is it the law of nature? God crated nature, but Buddha was anti-God. He despised the Brahman god because of all the suffering in the world.
@@glorifythyname7777 BAHAHAHHA, I remember replying to your comments on another video,. Here again ha?
@@glorifythyname7777 nature of life and humans have always been created by ourselves nothing else. Believing god sometimes limits the factual beliefs of science. science is fact and god is religious faith. Can’t compare the two

I just came back from Bhutan.its pureland of the lotus born one.even the dogs there are happier than some of the comments found here
WANG ZHE well said
The dogs probably get treated better there as they are regarded as sentient beings. Would love to visit Bhutan.
O
I visited bhutan in 2018, I just loved that country soo much, so much of peace everywhere, clean and pure air, waters , atmosphere and everybody is so happy to help each other, no noise and pollution, just a great country
Obviously, the dogs are treated better, than here!
"The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and
avoid dogmas and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based
on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a
meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that would
cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism."
(May 19th, 1939, Albert Einstein’s speech on "Science and Religion" in Princeton, New
Jersey, U.S.A.)
I do agree with you except that I view Buddhism as a way of being rather than a religion.
a right path leads to another level of evolution.
That's the religion of the NOW, in those who are enlightened, not the FUTURE. The future will be worse than the present.
You are entitled to your opinion, however I do not believe one religion is better than another. I love Christianity, I don’t believe it is superior to Buddhism. The bible has some of the greatest teachings I’ve ever encountered. Jesus was the kindest most giving man that ever walked the planet. That being said, I do like Buddhism. All religions point to the same God. We are all connected, we are all one.
@@Me-yf9lt not all religions point to the same God. Buddhist doesnt believe in gods. Only Abrahamic religions point to the same god.
I am a Theravada Buddhist from Bangladesh, a south east asian country. I do believe that there is no difference in different schools of Buddhism as all schools aim at the final target, Nirvana in different ways.
How are Buddhists treated in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh? I visited Bangladesh in 1990. Didn't notice much of a Buddhist presence, if any. There was a small Christian presence in Chittagong.
Abir Barua Bangladesh isn't a South East Asian country though
i am buddhist from bangladesh. and we treated well in here..dont care really which religion you are.every religion can practice their own religion.
there many buddhist by birth....bangladesh is not like other muslim majority country...there is freedom of choice. and government always take care of minority religion..
@Atheist of course they know...currently I am studying in Canada.. and I live with my friends..and they are Muslims... not all people are same as you think..
Buddhism opens your eyes to another dimension and lets you see and identify people with similar vibes, who understand the meaning of life.

Unfortunately, I was born in the US, and first was introduced to NSA Buddhism in 1981, and that did not satisfy my needs. When I journeyed to Thailand in 1983, I discovered Theravada, and from that point, I determined to BE Theravada, and someday live in a Theravada Temple (WAT) in Thailand. In 2010, I achieved that goal.

To be a Buddhist is to abandon all wordly desires. Are you sure you are ready?
MonkGoneGamer that’s to be a monk. we can be lay buddhists and be enlightened as well
Anybody can be a Buddhist and one doesn’t have to give up your worldly belongings. But once one understands the philosophy of Buddhism they no longer mean that much to you. Some adherents give up almost all of them but others just get emotionally detached to material things. One will gain great insight into the silly things and emotions that drive their actions.
Buddhism helps to learn the reality about the purpose of this life, that is earned by us via "Karma". We have earned a short span of time in this life - in that we have to self realize, find ourselves. Its "Damma" is a full and complete narration of the existence. Like presented here, it is well rooted and described in depth in all South Asian Nations, the monks are well versed and capable of sharing its wisdom with those who are keen to find the path to "Enlightenment".
Buddhism is not a religion, its all about Nirvana and Compassion. Very inspiring and touching talk.
Buddhism is a religion my friend. Nirvana and compassion are states and teachings of the Buddhist religion
It must be a religion, because she said she was praying in the video.

Brother, there is no need to hide the truth. even Hindu is against Buddhist philosophy and had lots of action taken from Hindu against Buddhist.
Fortunately, Tibetan has kept the main teachings of Nalanda University and great masters of Tibet.
Try to revive the lost knowledge of ancient Indian wisdom about mind.
1st Hindu needs to learn how to accept the mistake, and then individual development will start.
Otherwise, always remain in the loop.
Indian leaders try to carry the relics of Lord Buddha to other Buddhist nations to gain political support in geo politics and economics. On the other hand, shrilanka's top religious leader brings the Lord Buddha relics to offer His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.
What did you see from that.

I am a student of Tibetan Buddhism (Sakya) but I wonder if it’s for me or whether my path is that of Zen.
I worry about the spiritual materialism and the school of Mahayana I am a sangha member of.
Our Lama is wonderful though.
sandeep r I don’t have the time to explain it in any great depth- research a bit more if you’re interested.
There are 4 major ‘schools of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism- Ngyingma, Sakyapa, Kaguyu and Gelukpa.
Zen, in Japan, and Chan in China, were introduced into these regions by either Indian practitioners (or those from the Himalayan regions) and the Chinese and Japanese then adopted and adapted Buddhism to fit in with their other cultural and spiritual beliefs and practices.
Buddhism is deviod of dogma and theories. It teaches about rational and scientific analysis
Scientific analysis?

What tickles me about western men and women is that they decide to become monks in their late 50s and 60s and so on in their elder years after they've lived their younger lives partying and enjoying life, then they make the big decision. It's very different in Buddhist countries when they do it at a very young age 20s and less even.
you say ''partying and enjoying life'' like that is the right way to live your young years. but what I have realised that those kinds of people are the emptiest.. There is a reason here in the west young people are so depressed, anxious and stressed. and I'm one of them. I would much rather live life in a more peaceful way, surrounded with nature and peaceful people. But instead I'm surrounded by chaos.
batman 😂😂😂
Perhaps in the West we must experience who we are not before we can remember who we are.
I have been of the way for some time. This is my first time in a society.
