    UPDATE: For anyone that was interested, the 35 pan palette is now available here: www.studioofmm.com/store/35palette

  • @babytuksbaby
    @babytuksbaby 2 года назад +27

    For the last pan you could insert some schmincke oxgall. I like to use it with mijello because on top of being non-granulating it’s a bit lazy on paper and doesn’t spread on water like western watercolors. The oxgall helps adjusting that property a bit

  • @starr-starr

    First set I bought after Cotman. Agree with the person who suggested adding a touch of ox gall or synthetic ox gall if you want a little more flow. Mission Gold and Holbein dont put any ox gall in their paints, so they tend to stay where they are put. It’s part of their painting tradition. But that also makes them good for beginners IMO. I started with the 24 pure pigments, and eventually collected all but 2 of their pure pigments, including a couple that are very difficult to get outside of Asia. I love this line of paints, and they are wonderful to paint with. The other thing I like is their color chart, which is great for learning how to mix colors. I spent hours as a newbie just putting together the pigments on that chart. I learned a lot! Also, I ran lightfast tests on them, and their ratings are quite accurate, at least for the mid-Atlantic. A two star will definitely fade - bright clear violet I’m looking at you. Thanks for your take on this brand!

    • @studioofmm

      That was something that I wanted to mention and completely forgot! Definitely wish that the 1 purple in the set was more lightfast.

I was looking out for this 34set but unfortunately couldn't afford it this time around 😭 so I got my hands on the 12set Mission Gold instead 🥲 which is far better than nothing. I wish you would compare Shinhan with your Miiello Mission Gold set.
    I agree that it would be better to put black and white in a 6 tube set with other things like operas, for those that want it.
    Another thing that would improve sets is not having 2 or 3 of the same color, warm, neutral, and cool. It only cuts down on variety like greens or purples.

  • @katiealleena2049

    Jeez that bright opera looks like highlighter ink lol. I have been meaning to try this brand's single pigment line for awhile now. For drying watercolor, a tip I've learned is to fill especially full pans about 1/3 to 1/2 way, let dry and then fill the next 1/3 or 1/2 etc until it's filled to the top. It tends to prevent cracking. If you like a lot of the non-granulating properties of this, the first professional set I'd ever used was Sennelier :D I switched for Qor eventually and then a few other brands for more of that granulation I like to work with. But I think you'd really like that brand, too.

    • @studioofmm
      @studioofmm  2 года назад +2

      It’s definitely a bright one, haha! A bit unusual for an opera pink colour to be included in a set of this size but it can be a fun colour to incorporate.
      Yeah I definitely shouldn’t have gotten carried away with filling up the pans fully, especially with the size that they are.
      I’ve always been intrigued by the Sennelier paints and the Qor ones always look so cool! More to add to the wish list lol

    I wish I had NOT bought the 36, 7ml set including palette years ago but did not know enough at the time. Should have bought the single pigment set or Started with Daniel Smith 15ml primary colors. One of the benefits of tubes is that you can create your own convenience mixes. In this set even ultra marine blue and cobalt blue are mixes and they should not be. There are 4 fugitive colors. Even indigo is fugitive because it’s mixed with Prussian blue so that makes no sense as now it cannot be used as a neutral tint. The bright opera pink however is decently less fugitive than most brands so that’s a good thing. Also none of the colors granulate. I do LOVE this palette design though but it cannot be bought separately. Because I love the palette I reach for this set more for practice and journals, than my White Nights set whose paints I like better than mission gold.

      How do you do custom colors?

    • @valasafantastic1055
      @valasafantastic1055 2 года назад +2

      @@a.humphries8678 You study the pigments and practice making mixes with different colours and pigments. Using tube paints you already own and reserch on youtube and purchase specific tubes to fill in the best pigments/colours for your collection. You take swatch and written notes. You review the colour mixes you made during this study/practice and find the best ones. then you try several similar colour mixes. Both from the pigment and visual hue standpoint. Then you test them on paper right next to each other with clearly labeled written notes. Also indicate the approximate ratio (ie: 1 part yellow 2 parts blue) of the individual paint used in a given mixture. After this you find the best of the best, cream of the crop custom mix/convenience mix. Then you prepare empty half/full pans with magnets stuck to the bottoms and a magnetic metal pallet (or other empty pallet configuration to your taste) Then you squirt approximate ratios of those exact selected tube paints into the empty half pan and use a stirring stick (such as a toothpick or knitting needle) to thoroughly mix them. if the paint is hard to re-wet or very dry (or you live in a very dry climate) You can also add a drop of real honey and/or vegetable glycerin. Now swatch out and test the mixed pan. If the mix is 'off' correct it by adding more of the colour (colours in the case of a mix that uses three or more separate tubes). If its too full get another empty pan and push some into it using your mixing tool or a pallet knife. Then add more as needed and mix until the colour is as close as desired to your perfect selected 'cream of the crop' colour you were aiming for.
      Thats exactly step by step what I do anyways! Hope it helps.
