Please please please do more of these. Incredibly valuable to Reference users when looking at buying monitors. This is the most useful information I've seen in a monitor review. Even if they're less in depth than this incredible review, It's great to have an idea of how monitors respond to reference 4 software, and what to watch out for.
i will tell you know that the first pair of monitors i got were KRK rokit 5's and it was a massive mistake and sold them right after i heard the hs5's and got these and they are pretty clear to me have been making music for like 7 years now.
I agree with Rick James. The Rokits were my first 'serious' monitors, and I thought they were pretty good... until I got my hands on some Focal Alpha 65s. The Rokits have poor clarity in the entire mid-range. My mixes weren't translating well at all. Get yourself some decent monitors and you will finally hear what you've been missing out on with the KRKs.
This is a very detailed review, have you covered other speakers- I can't seem to find any. Not to be critical, because this sounds like a very in-depth analysis, but you’re almost alone in the conclusion that these are not accurate across the frequency spectrum.Thank you!
Every mix I've done on these have always translated well in the real world. Some of my best records have been mixed on these bad boys! The mid-range is a bit much if you're not used to them but you can roll it off if needed. AND they sound great in just about any studio as long as it isn't too dead. After using these, there's no way I'll ever use NS10s again!
Hey great review! I am currently looking for a pair of monitors. I'm holding back from buying yamaha hs5 because of the spiked mids. I was checking out JBL LSR305's. Please do a review on it or let me know your opinion about it, thanks!
As I am thinking of replacing my aging and comparatively cheap Z5500 surrround 5.1 set from Logitech I have been toying with the idea of getting a bunch of decent studio monitors and pairing them with some sort of audio interface that has 10 or more outputs.... This all to do surround sound mixing in DaVinci Resolve... I must say. I am tempted to get a couple of HS5's at a time to build up the surround sound environment over a few months. Going from standard 2.0 stereo at first. Then adding another HS5 as the center and a subwoofer to get 3.1. Then continuing adding pairs of HS5 to get 5.1, 7.1, and finally 7.1.2 for the full Atmos setup... I just need to find a good enough audio interface that can handle that throughput.
+Patricio Campos I'd expect them to go a bit lower and play louder. If you're looking to get your system calibrated, it would better to go with the HS8's.
iv just bought these speakers which they work perfectly fine until i open FL Studio and it says 'Couldn't create the main streaming DirectSound buffer? Can anyone help please?
Nice review. Would be nice to know what really are the best reference monitors now the Yamaha NS10's has been discontinued. I understand the HS8 is the closest replacement to the NS10.
Good stuff, even if that isnt how you spell 'Perceived', at least not in this hemisphere :D I appreciate the effort you've put into these measurements.
Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong but the negatives center around mostly higher end studio use of this monitor whereas I think Yamaha designed this as more of a home studio monitor. Maybe even an entry level one at that. That's not to say it can't function in higher end environments nor is it to say that you can't get serious stuff done with home equipment (I'd like to think I've at least scratched the surface). But my point is that those with needs that this monitor isn't going to solve SHOULD have much higher price points anyway. Right?
You're absolutely right. Yamaha is competing with other manufacturers of home studio monitors and colored the bass to satisfy the dj's and electronic music producers. What a lot of these reviews fail to mention is if you want more bass with the HS series then just get the HS8 subwoofer
Manufacturers go to great lengths to design speakers that enhance audio quality with rich bass, mids and high frequencies. Makers of studio monitors go to great lengths to design monitors that do not enhance sound, and strive for flat-response of all frequencies.
Hey guys. I am among them, KRK Rokit 6 G3, ADAM T5v and IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitor . They are all around the same price. I have a Creative sound blaster Z and want to listen to music on PC through spotify. Which would you get?

hey, bud, I just bought this speaker and I'm kinda confused in choosing the cables to connect to my soundcard. which one is better, xlr or trs cables? does the cable types will affect the speaker performance? (latency, noise, etc) or I can use either of the cables without any difference? a little advice would help! thanks, bud!
+Gusti Arya Wiriadhana I have these and I can recommend you to connect it to your soundcard using balanced XLR cables. To me it made a big difference mainly in terms of interference and noise reduction compared with the TRS cable I used to to use. So my suggestion for you is to go for a balanced XLR to XLR connection to your soundcard or, a XLR to TRS if you sound card don't have XLR out but does have balanced TRS out.
Would you recommend a pair of HS5's for a mainly digital mastering setup? I don't do live instrument recording in my home office. I spend most of my time with electronic/big beat and dance music there, and I want a great pair of monitors to do the trick. Are the HS5s the winner?
I have an old teac A-X55 MK2 amp unit that i got handed down from a friend. i dont have any passive speakers to go along with it. i'm in the market to get a good speaker system and was wondering if i would benefit from having an active system like those yamaha HS5 speakres or spend the money on good passive speakers. i guess my question is: would the audio quality coming out of my speakers depend more on the speakers themselves or the amp? would me A-X 55mk2 give a good quality signal if i spend money on a quality passive speaker set or would they always be colored because of the amp? thanks.
get krks they have a better sounding low end. these monitors are for mastering and mixing. for what u want to do you really dont need that flat of a sounding speaker...
I recently bought a pair of HS5s and I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t really like them, virtually no bass and when I finally got my songs sounding nice on them it sounded very different on headphones and other speakers, I thought these were meant to do the opposite I thought if I get it sounding nice on these it will sound nice on anything!
i bought it this evening, and i use focusrite scarlet old version, RCA cable. and ive got noise in both speaker, is it normal? or i need to change the calbe?
You need a balanced connection to avoid noise. RCA cables are always unbalanced so there is no work around besides using a different input cable like XLR or TRS.

Agreed. I don't know if I'll call them 'Trash' but definitely 'muddy'. Until your mixes sound super sweet, don't worry about monitors. I got the Neuman KH - 120A - pricey but worth it. Mixing should be taken seriously. The Neuman's are better then KRK by a long shot, Yamahas HS series as well (Yamahas have no bass) and are big as f**k. Neumann KH 120 A Studio Monitors are small in size like the Rokit's 5inchers but the sound including bass is awesome. Perfect for EDM music. I love them and did a brief review on them on my channel as well.
jaybii well starting with no monitors, krks are great but im at the point now where i need yamahas to get a better mix, what do you mean the hs series has no bass?
Why cant i just make my own EQ settings before i make music using a regular EQ in the mastering channel :D? with other words i can make a yamaha hs5 more flat with help if this diagraph ^^
JBL imo, a friend of mine uses the hs5, they're very clinical and have very little bass, now don't get me wrong they're good speakers and all studio monitors take getting used to, but let I'd find it difficult mixing frequencies I can't hear considering the hs5 really drops off at 70hz, the midrange is also very forward on these. I find the jbls to have a much better balance in terms of high, mid and Low, they have a very good pronounced low end that isn't hyped however it let's you hear the low frequencies you're mixing, considering it goes down to 43hz, they have a wide sweet spot as well thanks to their waveguide and yeah that waveguide works! Honestly it's completely up to you, I just find the JBL to have more balance between the different frequency ranges as well as being flat and detailed at the same time.
ok pros, my room is 10'x10' /drywall... i have 2 HS5's...primary musical use is with a MOOG Subsequent 37 Analog synthesizer...but also use a DAW (Logic)...what are your opinions on this speaker in this room and, do you have any recommended settings?
From what i can tell this product isn't doing anything but just running an EQ curve that is basically offsetting or neutralizing the EQ curve of the headphones or speaker.system in the room. This anyone can basically do themselves at home with their daw. You simply need a test mic and some test tones. That theory has been around forever for attempting to correct for room accoustics. As I understand from pros that have talked about this,, it doesnt work that easy. Its not so simple. If you have a 5 db. dip at say 1500hz, you cant just simply boost 5db at 1500hz. Other surrounding Frequencies react to any boosts and cuts in different ways which makes theoretical calibration or neutral much more complex and difdicult to achieve than that. Ultimately, I have not given much merit to products that do this. How is this product different?
Hi, thanks for your comment! Sonarworks SR (Studio Reference) is a digital technology solution for delivering consistently accurate studio reference sound across all existing speakers and headphones. The Sonarworks SR standard sets the frequency response target to be completely neutral for speaker-based playback systems, i.e. a flat FR curve across all audible frequencies as perceived by the listener in the listening position. The headphone FR target is designed to emulate neutral-sounding speakers. To elaborate a bit more, in order to attain neutral frequency response for speaker systems, their frequency response first needs to be measured. Sonarworks solves this challenge by taking speaker measurements across multiple points, while also recording coordinates of those measurements. As a result the software sees the individual measurements in context and builds itself a map of the room acoustics. Seeing the room’s acoustic map enables our software to build a smart average of the individual measurements in a manner that is similar to how the human brain perceives the room acoustics and excludes attempts to correct for acoustic phenomena that cannot be corrected on a software level. We recommend checking out our research in our blog here: www.sonarworks.com/blog/research

@@Switzur Didn't go for it. A friend of mine let me borrow his for a while to demo it. and I did. They're not my type in terms of listening enjoyment but for accuracy, they're great. Eventually gave them back and grabbed myself a pair of adam audio t5v's. Don't regret it.
Why not test HS8 is more popular?
do same video but for the NEW G4 rokit 5 PLEASEEE
HS5 need 110V - 60Hz, right?
yes
The frontground music is way too loud to hear what the narrator is saying. Why is it there?
WHAT?! I CANT HEAR YOU
So I have hs 80 but now should I get a new pair of monitors or will sonarworks compensate hs 80?
I am using krk ergo .
Review JBL LSR305 please, thanks ! ;)
Can you use this speaker for your computer?
No
These or the KRK Rokit 5?
Same question here bud - HS5 or Rokit 5 - I'm leaning towards the HS5
jaybii a lot of people told me these are too flat and you'd need a sub with them
krk trash
Review the HS7, please.
Why cant i just make my own EQ settings before i make music using a regular EQ in the mastering channel :D? with other words i can make a yamaha hs5 more flat with help if this diagraph ^^
JBL LSR305 or theese?
I also want to know this!
me too
JBL imo, a friend of mine uses the hs5, they're very clinical and have very little bass, now don't get me wrong they're good speakers and all studio monitors take getting used to, but let I'd find it difficult mixing frequencies I can't hear considering the hs5 really drops off at 70hz, the midrange is also very forward on these.
JBL is WAY more balanced.
ok pros, my room is 10'x10' /drywall... i have 2 HS5's...primary musical use is with a MOOG Subsequent 37 Analog synthesizer...but also use a DAW (Logic)...what are your opinions on this speaker in this room and, do you have any recommended settings?
How do you calibrate the HS 5 so it could be flat like the video?
+Yos Rabung With our Reference 3 calibration software. You can find more about it here - sonarworks.com/speakers/overview/
What these are above and beyond everything else is very cheap, and probably great value for the money.
Does it have dat bass? dat window shaking bass?
But does it have dat bass?
nope looool
I'm a budding studio guy
can you do the ik iloud micros??
Made it to 2minutes then the music killed me
are you serious? your software costs more than one of these speakers. this is ridiculous.
You must be new to the music world, lmao. Nexus 2 with all expansions is like $2400.
LOL... what gives with that 90ties video game sound track?!?!
Ridiculous Lol
They are essentially a poor man's genelec.
It's perceived not percieved.
Wat
You haven’t reviewed HS8 or HS7. Dirtbags.
