Quick little reminder that Monty is one of the main reasons why Meg & Gavin are even together. Monty knew Gavin liked her & he managed to track her down at PAX & made them take a walk together so they got to know each other a little better. He played a bit role in their happiness today. Even with the little things he made a big impact. RIP Monty. You'll be missed

I think whatever money she ends up not using to help her out after all expenses paid would be to start a scholarship, charity, or some kind of fund to help kids with the arts, like animating. I think that would be a tremendous thing. If RT started a charity/scholarship/something maybe by selling shirts or simply a donation fund that opens once a year or something would be the best. The Monty Oum Foundation. Help kids everywhere with the arts, with animating, with their creative endeavors or dreams.

The Argument Invalidator Its a form of respect from us in the RT community. Look normally i'd just tell you to go fuck your self but because of this monty. I'll conserve my hate. Now leave the dead to rest and the community to mourn.

    • @NeckWeck
      @NeckWeck 9 лет назад +2

Zachary Osterman Sorry, I'm letting people mourn however they please.. It's just that seeing something already said over and over again makes it seem more like up-vote bait more than anything else which sort of takes away from me mourning him. Sorry if it was a respect thing to you. I decided to leave it at "eh, whatever" before because I didn't want to disrespect Monty's memory with any arguing, but now that it's out there I guess... Again, sorry if it's a respect thing to you. Just decided to let you know where my head is at.

Agree, but it may also have been that she was one of the ones who could hold it in while making the speech to us. A lot of people would have totally broken down. Ive had family pass before (and pets), and for a good while after, so much as thinking or mentioning them, sent me rolling in tears. It was incredibly hard to hold them back. That girl there has some serious strength and self control.

+Biruh Haptu I know the feeling. I'm... not new to Rooster Teeth, but I'm not very well acquainted with many of the staff members. I watched the first several seasons of RvB through Halo Waypoint back when that first started up because I was too young at the start of RvB and then I kinda forgot about RT. I started watching their news stuff maybe two years ago and only started watching their other work recently. I didn't even really know who he was and now I feel super guilty. Worse still is finding out he did Haloid, which I remember watching and I never followed up on the rest of Monty's work.

    Five months without Monty Oum.
Five full months. I remember when I first saw this. I had just gotten out of school, and my friend gave me a few words on Skype.
"he's gone. monty's gone." I knew something was up. Went to rt.com. And found the journal. I had to walk home with eyes filled with tears, eleven days before my birthday. I got home, sat around for about an hour, and eventually lost it. I cried for literally an hour. I was extremely sad and just felt sheer depression.
Hey Monty, if you're seeing this, how's Heaven?? I hope it's nice up there, bud.

You're right, I didn't know him personally. But it's still a touchy subject for some people in the fandom. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death.
So I've finally a moment to gather my thoughts of the events this past summer:
The date is June 24th 2012 and I'm about to board a plane, my mother had just died a few days ago. Off the grid as I have been described for many years now. Even my family of four older brothers and two older sisters expect little response from me. My most convenient of excuses is that I am just always busy, though I say that quite literally. I find it laughable in conversations whenever other people equate there ground to mine when they say "yea I'm busy too, everyone's busy."
No I am busy. If you see your friends or family more than once every 3 or so years, if you live outside of more than a 1 mile radius, if you see your girlfriend of 15+ years only perhaps 3 times a year.
    My day consists of:
    1. Wake up
    2. Brush my teeth
    3. Drive to work (across the street)
    4. Work
    5. Eat something at my desk while working
    6. Skype "quality time with girlfriend" while working
    7. Watch something together while working
    8. Work till I'm tired
    9. Shift my category of work to something I can do while half conscious
    10. Go home (back across the street)
    11. Shower
    12. Sleep
    13. Start over
This process goes on every day of the week, throughout the year. I am quite literally at my desk whenever I am not sleeping or in the shower. If you are not a complete prisoner of yourself, you are not my kind of busy.
2 months earlier voice messages and emails had started showing up about mom's condition. That she had taken a turn for the worse and I should come home. My initial reaction, like my reaction to anything that takes me away from my desk is, "but I'm too busy." For the uninitiated the easiest way to describe what I do is animation, a category of storytelling that consumes every ounce of my being. I've made a name for myself by working hard, not something I was known for growing up. I can't recall if I was simply disinterested, or if the formula I've found that keeps me going is simply too pacifying that it makes things like dealing with the real world a passable hindrance.
"Workaholic? Please. That's sounds like something lazy people would say."
So my mother, the one who gave birth to me is dying. Frantic emails and voice messages from my older brothers and sisters biding I drop everything and go home ASAP kept flooding my inboxes. Now this year happened to be perhaps one of the most pinnacle years for RvB. We are in our tenth season, and we have a monstrous amount of work ahead of us that we're uncertain we'll be able to finish by deadline (despite tripling the size of the team.) Considering I play a huge keystone role to this whole project. It's perhaps the worst time possible for me to cut and run. Is she dying right now? Oh there's still time? Maybe I can fly next week. With the most inappropriate amount of hesitance, I started collecting my work to take with me. I booked a ticket. I started creating shots that I could work on offsite. No joke, in a perverse level of dedication I planned to be working while my mother was on her deathbed. Was this my way of not dealing with it? In my head unlike the rest of my family who were mourning, I thought it better that I honor my mother by doing her proud. I think this was true. Only time will tell.
It's June 22nd 2012 and my flight approaching. I check my messages to find that they have changed. My mother had passed. Oh and it's also my birthday.
I can't recall what it was that I felt upon hearing the news. There was pause, and then logic in its ugliest form reared itself.
"Well why am I even flying now?"
Did I really think that? Yes I did, not only did I think it, I said it, to Matt, to Kathleen who were both aware how in the thick of it we were with RvB. Both of them being my friends (and human) understood the weight of a parent passing. Apparently more so than I… I think.
2 days after I've turned 31 I'm in Providence Rhode Island with the rest of my family. It is pretty difficult for my large family to be together all at once. We've thus scattered about the world onto our own lives, some of us also not being able to actually afford flying. But somehow all 8 of us manage to be together again for the first time in over 10 years, minus our mother.
Going home and being with my siblings in this time of remembrance conjured up old thoughts in me as well as brought new ones I didn't realize were always there. Because everyone was this mode of old tales, we talked about things mom used to do, how she lived, I discovered how she was in her final days.
I found out they had to take the starter out of the car to keep her from going grocery shopping. They told me how despite having help in the house she would get up every day to cook and clean and work. And that it was impossible to stop her despite her organs failing one after another. Up until her body stopped working she didn't. I started to realize I of all people understood her the most. Work isn't a choice, not when it comes to surviving.
There have been moments the past few years where I'd felt cursed by our family's upbringing. I'd often say that we were born poor, and that we were raised to think like poor people. Most of my brothers are unemployed or in debt, and I wasn't an exception for many years. I felt some pride of being able to break our family's mold by taking a chance on living what I thought was a different life than what I was raised to be. But I understand now that I still learned something very important without even realizing it.
33 years ago my parents dragged our family here from the war on their own two feet, it was a matter of survival. We came to this country with no money, and not being able to speak the language. My mother pregnant with my older brother, and then myself a year after, found a job, learned the language, and provided for our family. My father who had suffered from post war syndrome was little help. So all I can remember of my mother in those early years was the she was never around. She was never around because she was busy fighting, she fought for our family to survive, because she had no choice. That's why you work, because the alternative is unthinkable.
I realized that at a level beyond excuses my mother's spirit lived on within me. Perhaps long before now that she passed on surviving with no alternative. I recall it was the 8 years ago when we first realized she had brain cancer that I started getting my ass in gear. Back then they told her she had perhaps months to live at best. I remember her being in the hospital, hole in her head, only to come home and be walking as soon as she could stand. The cancer had come back several times over the last 8 years only for her to literally walk it off each time. In choosing between laying down and dying, and getting up and doing something, there was no choice. She went down swinging, she achieved something great, there were no other options.
I feel the same way about my work, because I have no feelings about anything else.
It is now sunday, it's raining, the wake is upon us. I don't think I've ever seen a corpse before, not sure how I should act about it. Of course it was quite, somber, the air was thick with the pretense of formality. Some of it is real, wasn't sure where I stand.
Finding my mother's corpse, she looked peaceful. I felt peaceful. I began thinking that saying goodbye, and mourning over someone passing. That's something you do for yourself. Somehow coming here and seeing her one final time, all I could do was smile. Everyone took their time paying their respects, somehow I didn't feel odd in the slightest being the only one in the whole room smiling ear to ear. I can't recall if it was pride for her or myself, maybe there wasn't a difference at this point. Seeing her empty vessel I only felt that I'd finally managed to do something right.
All the time she's known me I'd been a delinquent and a failure. Even though I was known to be intelligent and perceptive, somehow my report cards ware always bad news. From being left behind a grade, to failing out of multiple schools, the things I did spend my time focusing on, Legos, videos games, drawing, no one would ever think it would amount to anything. At least at the very last minute I was able to pull it together and rise above my lifetime of failure, and make her proud. She managed to see me on stage accepting an award for a show in something. In a category of work that she could have no understanding of. And nor did I do it knowing she would've seen me do it; the only thing I had to focus on was doing it. And to my delight I was told she managed to see it.
The answer to why I came? To find out something I kind of already knew. To confirm it further.
From seeing her body to when we carried it to the fire, I could not stop smiling. I suspect some even found it odd as I caught a few curiously tilted heads. It's a tad odd, even I found it a little surprising. Upon my mother's death I left work only focused on what I should be doing. I returned to work without missing beat, but with a better understand who I was. Going from slight uncertainty about my level of appropriateness. To what was honestly my natural reaction to her death. And then being completely certain I was honoring her in my own way best possible. I work because there is no alternative.
Getting away from my work pretty much equates to paralysis, I simply don't know what to do with myself when I am away. I hope the same for others, because I've always said the world looks very different, when you're pushing yourself every second you've got. Have I succeeded? I've succeeded in being more than I was. Only to understand it all looks no different from yesterday, just a little bit clearer.

Everybody remember that everybody has a different way of mourning. If people use religion to help get through it, that's fine. If somebody has to cry to somebody about it, that's also fine. Religious debate has a time and a place, this is not it. If Christians believe he is happy animating in Heaven, if Hindus believe he's already been reborn, if Buddhists believe he has achieved Nirvana, or if atheists believe he is at eternal peace and rest, these are perfectly fine and I'm sure Monty would respect all people in mourning. Nobody should be attacking each other for their beliefs on what happens after death, because the only people who do know are the ones who have passed.

It's been 8 years now. 8, long, hard years.
I still remember hearing the news that Monty had been hospitalized. How every member of Rooster Teeth - fans and employees alike - came together in unison to pray for his health and well being. I remember Googling his name every other hour to finally hear the good news that he managed to recover from a sudden, unfair illness. I remember all the forums and threads dedicated to letting him know how excited we all were to get him back eventually and that we were there to support him in any way possible.
But then a morning finally came that he didn't get to see. The thing that we had spent so much time convincing ourselves that COULDN'T happen, DID happen. Monty Oum was gone And no one knew what to think. No one knew what to do.
I remember the tears that were shed, the holes that were left, and the overbearing, monumental sense of loss that was shared by a group of people who were genuinely driven by the creative force that this one person had achieved for himself. I even remember hurting like I was attending the funeral of one of my own family members, which is not something I say lightly.
But the one thing I'll always remember above the others is what came next: With wet cheeks, unsteady hands, and trembling lips, we started walking. Even when we thought it was the most impossible, that something irrevocably precious had been stolen away, we mustered whatever strength we could gather and shuffled onwards one step at a time. Because that was what he taught us: "Keep moving forward."
He would always say that as long as you keep trying you've never truly failed. He would say that as long as you don't break your stride, regardless of it's length, you're never really wasting yourself. To refute that by constantly wallowing in our pain would have been the greatest disservice to him and his memory. So we didn't. It took a while, granted. But we still didnt. We let our hearts bleed for him, then took a deep, slow breath, and then said "Is that all you've got?" while glaring life straight on with bleary eyes and strained voices.
Really, I guess what I'm trying to illustrate is how much I miss him and how much he inspired me (and so many others) to be both brave and passionate in the face of apathy or despair. And if there really is a "big DDR machine in the sky," I hope I can finally have a proper match with him someday.

And that's so inspiring to me. Like many fans, I'm here if anyone wants to talk. Instead of worrying about the continuation of his projects, I think we should enjoy what's made and appreciate the outcome of whatever happens next in Monty's honor. Just found a quote from monty
"I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death."

Well technically, of enough time passes by, it may be possible that a civilization trillions of years into the future could make machine that can trace the history of all matter in the universe, then they could reconnect the matter of all Living things at their prime. Basically there is no guarantee that anything is forever, even your existence. The universe will be here for a long time, and before it reaches an equalibrium, there will have been a perfect copy of earth made.

I might as well add my 2 cents. This has been bugging me for a while, and hopefully getting this off my chest will help.
I never heard of Monty Oum until long after he passed (fall 2015, I know this cause my coworker introduced me to RWBY as season 3 was starting).
And I feel bad that I never got to appreciate his work while he was alive. I'm especially sad that he died so young from something so random yet so dangerous.
I like to think that Stephen Hawking is right. That there are an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of possibilities, many in which Monty is still alive (it's a nice thought).
I am well aware of his insane work ethic (another reason I'm sad to have never heard of him until too late).
Most of all, on a lighter note, I think Monty's getting sick of all the RIPs (Miles joked after a moment of silence that he'd want Miles to get back to work). I am well aware of my hypocrisy on this, but sometimes it is hard to let go.
But I am happy that, despite his short life, he left a huge impact on the world.

This is all very sad...but we shouldn't be sad right now...
I'm not going to pretend I knew Monty, but he left an amazing Legacy when he was alive, and he made so many friendships with Rooster teeth members, Ross and The other Grumps, Markiplier and his fans, We can't all be sad about what he left, but we should be happy with the things he has done. He made everyone smile, he was a working machine, and a talented Animator and Writer.
I wanted to meet him and a lot of the other members of RT, but I guess death had other plans, but people like Monty inspire me to work, inspire me to try new things, say and do things that others will think are stupid or wrong, I was sad when I heard this a few hours ago, but I and We the RT community and the RT members, NEED to stay strong, Monty wouldn't want us to be sad, he wants us to be happy, he wants us to keep on believing in ourselves and work hard on what we want to work on and make others smile.
So smile for Monty. Smile for the RWBY Cast. Smile for Sheena. Smile for Monty's Family. Smile for all of the fans, friends and family of Monty Oum, I know it'll be hard but it's what he would want...
    RIP Monty Oum.

Secondly and more importantly, Monty was an inspiration to us all. Monty gave as close to 100% as he could physicly give to his work, making some of the best pieces of work I have ever seen. Monty was a pleasure to meet on the scenes of Gauntlet S2. He was charming, funny and kind from what I got to know him as and I regret nothing in terms of ever knowing him. Monty was a true hard worker in the face of RoosterTeeth and he showed off his true performance with many accomplishments, most commonly known is the creation of RWBY and a splendid job was done there.
A heavy heart sinks into my chest knowing that this is not a sad prank, but a true moment in time. Like losing a best friend you've known since childhood, Monty was a great friend behind the scenes and in person to everyone he met, a very respectful and inspirational person. He knew how to work hard and get things done, but also knew when to try and enjoy himself (even though he worked to the bone a lot of the time to get things done because that's how he was).
I think I speak for many when I say we will miss you Monty, and we love you with all of our heart. Your spirit and name will live on in infamy and we will never forget your dedication/hard work and most importantly, YOU in general.
Love you Monty, Love you RoosterTeeth

I actually found out he was hospitalized when I logged into RT looking for news of RWBY season three.
It was unexpected, the story had only been posted twenty-two hours ago.
Considering his apparent lack of previous health problems, I had expected a recovery.
      Just unexpected, I suppose.

Okay, why would over 1,000 people dislike this? This is serious, I mean did they think it was a joke cause the lady sounded, no not sounded, was literally about to ball her eyes on camera from giving everyone the news of Mounty's death. Never really heard of the guy until I started watching RWBY, but it really pains me to hear this. I send my prayers out to the family hoping that they're doing alright. I know this was months ago but it still happened this year...man what a way to start out the year XC

  • @TeamFahrenheit

I need to speak my mind about this and I doubt I will get a response from roosterteeth but I think they should hear this...for a while I was in a very dark place (I don't wish to describe what I went through but I still get nightmares about it). When I went to talk with people someone told me to watch a halo animation red vs blue because my favorite thing in the world was to play halo. Since then roosterteeth and its members have made me laugh and got me out of a extremely hard time. At a point I didn't think I could go on but the love I felt from the group kept me going. I thought of roosterteeth as my family and I love all of them deeply.
When I heard Monty was in the hospital I immediately sent money over to help pay for his hospital bill and prayed for his health. I learned today that my hero has passed on. My prayers are out to his family and friends but I would like to point something out. We (the fans) got together as a family to mourn and that makes me feel a lot better about the whole scenario we are going through
I know many people mourn him, the only reason I can type this is because of him and roosterteeth and I thank you guys so much for helping me you don't understand what you guys did for me and I want you to know that I'm better now because of you guys and Monty and I will never forget what he did for the community and especially for me
Thank you roosterteeth and I'm sorry for your loss

So this may sound like a sob story but its a true one. I would like to start by saying I think Monty saved me. So about a year or two ago I was in a deep depression and short story is it lead to me considering suicide. Around this time RWBY came out and it truly help to take my mind off it. And the all around positivity of the fans of it really helped me out. RWBY wouldn't have came about without Monty. I know a lot of people won't care about this but I felt that It needed to be said.

Coming up to the four year mark of your passing Monty, you're still touching lives through your legacy and the inspiration that provides.
Four and a half years ago you came down under to a convention to meet people, I believe Joel was there with you. I just wanted to go up so much and tell you how much your work meant to me, before I found RT I used to watch your halo edit fight scenes and sketch out my own as a kid, then I got into animation at school and again looked to you for inspiration.
Thank you Monty for touching my life so
    Rest in peace

I'm not going to pretend like I know all the details involved, but this is so freaking messed up. The fact that anyone can go into a modern American hospital, and get treated for something that isn't at all life-threatening, and end up dying from the treatment itself is completely unacceptable.
RWBY has been a huge inspiration for a lot of the 3D models I have made recently. I absolutely adore cell shaded graphics, and in fact found myself mentally dissecting the animations of all the characters because the choreography is so impressive, and have indeed picked up a few new tricks in doing so.
It is pretty awesome how much of an inspiration someone you never have and never will meet can be. RIP Monty Oum.
