@@solthegamer3769 I think he mean traditional martial arts from Chinese movies aka chinese opera fights or basically any Jackie chan film but animated.
Actually I've seen authors of other works describe fights this way as well, and RVB is my prime example for it. For example in the Legend of Drizzit when other people watch Drizzit and Artemis Entreri either fight others or eachother characters that see the fight always describe it as a dance, a beautiful piece of death.
@@Browntable It's such a shame that he's no longer here. I'm glad they're still continuing RWBY in his honor and though I adore the show to death, I cannot help but wonder just how much more amazing it currently would be with Monty still at the helm of the fight scenes. RIP Monty and know that you'll never be forgotten.
@@YouGottaShootEmInTheHead To be exact, he died of an allergic reaction to anesthesia after never waking up from his coma. Someone from Roosterteeth said something similar to this (i think it was Burnie) that always stuck with me: It was like Monty knew his time was short because of how hard he worked.
gk with superior breaching he had an allergic reaction to a medical treatment (I think an allergy shot) like 4 years ago and passed away, he was 33. A tragic loss of a wonderful man, RvB and RWBY were never quite the same.
I was so sure Monty would eventually get some really BIG role in an animated movie somewhere and his name would become synonym to action animation. I was so sure I'd be hearing his name being thrown around when people talked about movie making and doing action scenes. I was so sure people would be learning his name in books at school, teachers calling his name time and time again. I was so sure of all of it. That's how good Monty was, but he died too young. The world never got to experience what he could do safe for a few people that watched RvB, RWBY, Haloid, and Dead Fantasy. We lost a genius. Humanity should've mourned his passing.
when we got to the bit that said "Monty got to a level of excellence through practice and dedication and you can too" i was convinced it was going to segue into a Skillshare sponsor message ngl
TBH Reviews, the adventures on Blood Gulch were the best in a narrative setting, but Monty Oum’s fight scenes in Seasons 8-10 of Red vs Blue are better than current seasons so far.
Thread Bomb, I didn’t like the government conspiracy plot, the civil war plot, and the time travel plot, so the fight scenes were the best in seasons 8-10, but the narrative story altogether was the best in Blood Gulches because it was making fun of how shitty how early Halo games are so easy to animate them that even people that have never graduated high school/college could make them if they already know how to code and design the basic hardware/software for early Xbox games, and the fight scenes with Monty Oum were so great that later Halo games tried copying Monty Oum’s fighting style because Monty Oum is like the Walt Disney or Osamu Tezuka of modern times whenever it comes to fighting choreography.
What's really funny about Monty is that he not only had no formal training in animation, but he just started doing it at like the age of 15. Also when he was asked what the principles of animation were he genuinely didn't know. He basically got good because he was a breakdancer and had a great sense of rhythm. Also, RT addressed that since Monty's passing they wanted to move away from his style, either because they didn't believe they could emulate it correctly or because of a vision change. They wanted to go more hollywood in approach, which wasn't the best choice.
The way Monty's camera followed the action, I would describe as having the proximity of a helmet cam but with the focus agility of your own eyes. It looks almost like a POV if you were actually there fighting with the character.
And you see how he doesn't use too many jump cuts but rely on following the characters, making sure the viewers never get confused in the entire fight.
@@MrAsh1100 yes! Even through many parts of the fights go fast, im still able to keep up with it while watching casually, and sometimes i go back and slow down a certain move just to enjoy the smoothness and beauty

@@markss367 On the contrary, I liked S15-17s fights. Those had the cleanest flow between machinima and animation, without having to completely sacrifice fast paced sequences (although still far from Monty’s). Chorus used motion capture, which means there were many physical limitations in animation. That being said, Season 10’s Freelancer animations were fantastic.
Good stuff. I haven't watched recent seasons (Starting now!) but from these clips, I notice a lack of depth of field and other blending effects that make the new stuff feel so plasticy and silly
That and loads of continuity errors where you see characters teleporting all around the map because they want it to be "cinematic" rather than making sure viewers can see how the fight goes.

Monty left us too early and it’s a shame we’ll never see his work again. That being said RvB was never going to get the same level of animation during Monty’s time because of RWBY. It’s good to see a deep understanding of how Monty created action, well done.
Not only that, we won't see what the original path was. Although we may never know if the claims about it were true, but it's obvious the direction in the plot has changed.

Good luck, you can do it. Look up Mark as well who animated a fan made team SLVR, might give some ideas because he's also another animator and liked Monty's style too.
One of the more underrated things is how well he worked with Jeff Williams. The music and animation clearly were built together and took advantage of eachother.
Completely agree. Haven’t watched RvB in YEARS, but the anime-like camera direction was amazing for a while there. Really underrated aspect of animated fight scenes.
I'm honestly surprised that you made this whole video without mentioning "This One Goes To Eleven." That whole episode blows me away every time I watch it, the animation, music, and dialogue make it one of the greatest episodes of anything, ever.
Cutting/subtracting frames between motions for a bigger impact is the oldest trick in making excellent fight scenes in cinematography in general. Unfortunately, a lot of Hollywood movies nowadays simply missed it, especially the big blockbuster CGI heavy movies. I think you should check out some old Hong Kong movies or maybe recent "The Raid" franchise movies.
I’ve noticed how the animation changed when Monty passed away. It was.... different? Odd? Slow? Not fast? It was something I’ve noticed while watching the new animations began and well.... damn.

I miss Monty so much. It's just not fair. I still love this series to death, but this and RWBY (which I also love to death) truly haven't been the same ever since. I do really like the merc episodes from season 14 tho. Edit: even tho I agree that RWBY is far from the show it used to be, I think the show is far from terrible. It absolutely has had its moments (V4 was kinda boring, 5 was garbage, and 6 started strong but fell off in the 2nd half) where it was kinda shit, but especially recently, I think it's gotten somewhat of a return to form. @@Gannoh Oh yea i completely understand the criticism that it has gotten with the story (despite the fact that i haven't watched Season 17 yet because tbh, i didnt even know it was released until i watched this video) and even though i wouldn't call it my favorite at all, not even the best in the show, i stil personally like it and i would still watch the show to see where it goes, for now im still giving it a chance, after all season 1 to 10 was its own journey deeply connected, and even though it had plenty of arcs thorough it, it was still just one massive storyline, so if they go for the same approach here, i am going to atleast give it a chance. But yea, animation wise, Season 15 was kinda meh, but as far as i remember, there was a fight in Season 16 ( i think it was Donut vs O'malley, i might be wrong here) that i personally really liked and thought it was really good, maybe not "best fight ever in the show so far" but still fairly good.
I ironically stopped watching it after 13 by choice until recently due to church being killed off for good. That was before I had learned anything about Monty or how much of a downgrade the story would get. Mostly because RVB felt like church's story and it had ended beautifully. Recently rewatched the entire series and I'm in 16 now and I got to say that it's honestly been painful to watch at times. Not just the animation(which is by far the worst for me and just cringe worthy for me at times) but he characters, like Tucker feels like such a step backwards since season 13, Grif and Simmons aswell. Though I will admit Cabooses final farewell to his best bud was a great character moment, but the only character that doesn't feel like a complete regression right now is Washington due to his injury. It just feel like a complete step backwards from animation, to writing and characters being dynamic.
Forewarning about RWBY, the same thing happened with the fight scenes as well. All the fights from Pre-Trailers till like, season 4 were directed by Oum and are honestly so incredible. Now, there’s very little, stylized action when it comes to choreographing fights. It’s a little jarring to think about an anime that has natural progression of character’s talents going from quick, snappy, and sick to slow, reserved, and unimaginative. Thankfully, the team was smart and focused a lot of the show’s direction into story but it still feels a bit hollow w/o the fights that made rwby so well known.
I'm not gonna disagree that the fights from volume 3 (that Monty didn't direct) through volume 5 often suffer from the same issues as recent rvb but volumes 6 and 7 (so far) have shown a real improvement in fight scenes, from the Grimm fights in the premieres to the Blake and Yang vs Adam fight at the end of volume 6.
JonoMate oh right it was season 3 that was his last one. But yea I agree they’ve gotten better. I don’t think the fighting will ever look as flashy but seeing them change the style into what it is gives me hope for future fights. A lot of what I’ve noticed now are fights based around their semblances rather than their body movements so it at least strengthens the importance of a character and their “power”.
@@Talsbynians Yea nobody can animate the way Monty did so I'm glad they're using a new style instead, and apart from Blake semblance use has been more prominent or at least incorporated in smarter ways
They did have one animator that I believe captured Monty’s style. Why it looked so good in season 4 despite monty moving on. However the issue is rooster teeth did not keep the animator at the company so when he left that’s when it REALLY started to dip. So I don’t believe it’s impossible to mimic or try to get something simulator to Monty’s style but roosterteeth is just not hiring the right people
It looks like one of the main differences is that post-Monty, they use a lot of motion capture for their fights which are naturally slower and easier to animate. Monty didn't use motion capture for the actual fights.
pretty sure it's the other way around, monty was big on mo-cap and they stop using it after because it took too long... It's one of the reasons why his work has a certain realistic weight to it.
Monty really was a goddamn master of the craft. I wish he could see just how much everyone admires what he did even now and probably for decades to come.
Monty always talked about the "rule of cool" or if you paused a fight at any point, the characters still look cool, something that was missing for a long time but now (or at least in this volume of RWBY) has been remedied
I wouldn't say remedied for Rwby. For RVB their take on fighting after Monty passed works because Halo is more grounded in what the characters should be capable of since it's still Halo at the end of the day. RWBY? Not so much.
You’re definitely right that the fight scenes have declined since Monty passed, but I still love this show because of the characters. I’ve never felt like any of the reds and blues have stopped being themselves for a second, and I love all of them so much I can’t even describe it. So even if the writing and animation start to decline, I hope they keep making it until they feel it’s time to say good bye.
Yep, They are slowly getting better, seasons 6 and 7 of rwby has had pretty good animation. WAY better than season 4 did (the one created after Monty's passing) Still suffers from a few issues though. the weapons just turning into a blur rather than seeing the thing in motion. a lot of the ranged attacks lack a punch, sometimes literally with Yang where she used to kinda shadow box when firing the ranged attacks but now just straight arm shooting the projectiles off. They are getting better but its basically season by season.
@@Skyguy-hi2rk Writing is getting better as well i think. But threes still quite a few issues. Brunswick farms is a great example of good writing and direction, That arc if youd call it that was amazing. The apathy was a really good and dangerous grimm and the use of the silver eyes made sense, just like in volume 3.
The point in RWBY that just made me go OOF I believe was in season 5 at the last-ish battle where Mercury lightly wacked Ruby's scythe with his foot, made a horrendously cheesy line, and she just picked it right back up and made some other defiant cheesy line in response. It made me wanna stop watching right there but I toughed it out and stopped watching after the end of that season.
Right? Even though they all are just the same old idiots, the character development is just amazing. Not all of them had the same level of character development as a character like Church or Tucker, but they all learned and changed in very deliberate and satisfying ways going from the first few seasons to season 10. They felt almost like close friends I've known for years by the end.
Monty's death really changed so much at Rooster Teeth. I still like their content, but moreso their live action and podcasts. I don't think RvB and RWBU were ever able to recover from losing him. It's so sad that we lost so much with him. But he did leave an amazing legacy.
Legit if black clover was picked up by any other studio that didn't want to put it out as an indefinitely running show with no budget it could have been amazing. Instead the animation and especially characters come across as garbage because there's no time to put love and effort into it
RIGHT!? I was so excited and hopeful for Black Clover because the first episodes and fight scenes were so good and showed a lot of promise. Instead it's just another run of the mill "let's milk the fuck outta this show for money and kill all sense of pacing and plot progress. Oh, and the characters can feel empty too."
@@caseyhall2320 , I’m excited for Black Clover film on Netflix this year, and all of the complaints I’ve seen for Black Clover anime only makes sense if you’re watching the English dub only, and that’s you’re very first introduction to the Black Clover anime series.
rvb is SUCH a great show and yeah the freelancer arc is so good story wise AND animation wise!! i’m really sad over how the new season’s animation looks (especially the tex carolina scene) but like season 12 and 13 were pretty good too like the huge freelancer/mercs fight was pretty cool!!
I'm like a year late, but one of the most memorable scenes in any animation I've ever seen was the Freeway Fight from Season 9. Particularly, when we reach the climax. It wasn't just the animation, but the MUSIC-amidst chasing one of the Insurgents, goaded on by Tex's sudden appearance, Carolina pushes herself further and further, faster and faster, and the camerawork and music follow her, building up to a ridiculous tempo that feels impossible to sustain. She moves so fast that pavement shatters under her feet. Glass shreds beneath her hands as she passes by. Her theme is being played at easily twice it's normal speed, and as the viewer you just KNEW that something had to give. And then it does, she wipes out hard, and the camera and music follow that brutal impact. It gave me goosebumps so potent that I can replicate the feeling just by listening to the score of that scene all these years later. I'm not gonna lie, there were still some moments in seasons 11-13 that gave me that feeling (Carolina VS Sharkface in their first matchup had the same "Carolina is pushing too far" feel) but after 13 it all sort of vanished. I'd love to see your assesment of RVB Zero, garbage fire that it is, because the ONE THING it has going for it is fairly decent action scenes (and literally nothing else).
Dude I just happened to see this randomly in my recommended. It may be because its only a day after upload, but you need more views and subs man, this editing and composition is top tier. PS. (The added touch of not only grasping but EXPLAINING the 12 principles and why they're important blew this out of the water for me. The Research (or maybe knowledge) you did/had for animation was shown for sure here
Also, I can help you out with RWBY. The earlier seasons, especially season 1, have those principles that Monty was a huge fan of. Even though it's gotten way better then it's first season post-Monty, and especially better than RVB, it used to have really static "fights", and that's me being pretty generous. Seasons 4 and 5 of the show are the biggest sinners of this. Season 6 was a big step in the right direction, and so far, season 7 is ok. And I honestly do recommend the show. I just wanna give you a fair warning
I'm more of an OG RvB fan than anything, I think I watched it as it was released until about season 6 or 7, so watching all of these flashy fight scenes has got me somewhat confused lol
I watched this video quite a few months back and I "liked" it then, but after having some time past I found myself thinking back about this specific video again and again. Out of all the thousands of video's I've seen on RUclips, this one is one of my absolute favorite. You do great work and you've defiantly earned my sub with this one.
Literally watching RWBY without Monty's presence there is a noticeable sense of lifelessness in the fights of RWBY. The heart and soul of the series. Idc what anyone says, the fights is what bring out and speak alot about he characters then the dialogue and story. His style gave so much, on top with music implemented with it? Beautiful.
Such a fantastic video, always felt there wasn’t something quite “right” about watching later seasons of RvB and could never really put my finger on it, Thankyou for being able to put it into words so eloquently!
this showcases the strength of animation as a medium (and further proves how ""realistic""/""live action"" remakes fail to understand the point). animation lets you focus mainly on the narrative and visual storytelling without bounding you to the limitations of physics.
Monty Oum is easily one of the best thing to ever happen to animation. His animation surpasses a lot of large companies and that fact that rooster teeth isn’t a huge mega corporation is really inspiring. His death hurt me deeply and none of the shows he worked on are the same.
I binged the whole show recently imagine my face when it went from fights scene where you can feel the "energy", the intensity to 2 people punching themselves like they were 70yo
thank you so much for making this video! I've been trying to articulate my thoughts around the difference in RvB in the Monty era and after and you did such an incredible job of utilizing the principles of animation in your explanation. note: my absolute favorite part of this was when you put in the kinect when you said connect, I literally laughed out loud
I know you said you don't watch RWBY so you don't want to comment on it, but you could pretend everything you were saying was actually about RWBY and it would still hold true.
Thank you for making this video. I really love and am inspired by Monty, there are so many show that have gotten worse without him. But people like you who examine his work and figure out what makes it great, people like you gives me hope that Monty won’t ever be forgotten and that one day someone will step up and take on his style of animation and direction.
Its funny, it seems like every few years rvb has a fantastic finale season. 10, 13, 17. There will probably be season 17 purists very soon given how zero is going.
@@hannahnelson4569 Actually, that’s what RT intended. They made perfect finales so that viewers can stop watching at any point if they don’t want to continue with RvB.
Season 16 isn't that good, but season 17 is most definitely a step up. I reckon it is in fact worth watching, because they do some solid character development for Donut, a couple genuinely good character moments for Caboose, a look at Carolina's development from beginning to end, and a few gags that genuinely made me laugh (such as Felix being afraid of knives - context required for that sentence, but yeah). And a minor thing on the environment in Carolina's self-harming segment, I do think it works better without the environment contributing anything. No tricks, no holds barred, no games, just her vs her past mindset. It's a fight she loses, but that doesn't matter because she knows she has genuine people who can and will support her. The animation criticisms are perfectly valid, but that fight means less if there are any outside factors contributing to the action.
3:05 thats good because i can, pretty much everything that monty did well in red vs blue he did well in rwby, and much like how hte annimation quality dropped in red vs blue so did in rwby, you notice the cracks in volume 3 in which monty died during the production of i believe.

Very well made video, and I think the nail was hit on the head. What Monty did for not only the animation in Red VS Blue, but to really drive home a characters motivations in the action sequences. What he did took true talent and imagination.
Season 13 was the last great season and season 3 was the last great season of RWBY. Monty Oum is the reason I'm studying animation. He was such an inspiration.
Damn this is so nostalgic like every single time I’ve rematched the end of season 13 which is when I stopped watching, I literally just start crying, every damn time. I don’t know why, but when I watched that show when I was like 9-10 I was so invested in that and I got so connected with each and every character and I loved the whole entire series and I loved it and it’s by far one of the best shows I’ve seen in my life and it’s so hilarious
Monty Oum's passing was when the series ended for me, both red vs blue and RWBY. I haven't watched anything RoosterTeeth related in years and I don't think I ever will again... (edit) Proceeds to rewatch up to season 10

I am soooo glad I came across this video, it put into words why I just couldn’t get into the fight scenes after he died. You definitely know your stuff.
I thought I was the only person with the same idea. With the idea that from season 9 and forward, there was this lack of exaggeration in their fight-scenes. And I thought I was the only one that miss the action from season 8 or 9. I love the way you talk (nohomo) and the way you cover all the points with examples that perfectly fits on them. I think the same thing about the frames in the punches and in the action choreographies. I've been practicing it 2 years ago, and I tried to implement that technic in my Stop-motion animations to make them look better. Another point that you mentioned is that the camera moves at the same time the characters move. And I've noticed that too. Another trick that I was trying to add to my videos, but it was kind of something difficult due to my limited spaces on the filming set (a table). It's awesome the way you talk and the way you say things having bases and causes. Not just yell for nothing. You know how to speak and how to tell things. You've just gained a subscriber.

Actually I've seen authors of other works describe fights this way as well, and RVB is my prime example for it. For example in the Legend of Drizzit when other people watch Drizzit and Artemis Entreri either fight others or eachother characters that see the fight always describe it as a dance, a beautiful piece of death.
I got Monty's autograph about a year before he passed. I miss him dearly.

TBH Reviews, the adventures on Blood Gulch were the best in a narrative setting, but Monty Oum’s fight scenes in Seasons 8-10 of Red vs Blue are better than current seasons so far.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr Watching RvB for the action is, uh, incorrect.
Do you ever wonder why we're here?
Archangel Jegudiel, why are we here it’s life greatest memories?

Or at least 14 as a goodbye
So I don’t believe it’s impossible to mimic or try to get something simulator to Monty’s style but roosterteeth is just not hiring the right people
Except they failed to do any build up and it feels more of an after thought. IE Adam actual fight only happens in vol 6 finale and short
@@karaokekingskingdom I’ve definitely seen them using mocap for more recent seasons so idk but that’s not the difference here

One of my favorite fight scenes is the fight between the meta and agent Washington vs Agent Texas
Monty was and still is my hero
Monty really was a goddamn master of the craft. I wish he could see just how much everyone admires what he did even now and probably for decades to come.
“The success of RvB can be partially laid to animation Jesus Monty Oum”
Monty always talked about the "rule of cool" or if you paused a fight at any point, the characters still look cool, something that was missing for a long time but now (or at least in this volume of RWBY) has been remedied
I wouldn't say remedied for Rwby. For RVB their take on fighting after Monty passed works because Halo is more grounded in what the characters should be capable of since it's still Halo at the end of the day. RWBY? Not so much.
Agents Washington and Carolina are the only reason I still watch RvB as they have a more grounded story while the Reds and Blues deal with time travel

It wasn't as bad as rvb. Rvb just went to a complete mess after season 13. I had to stop watching because of how bad it was
Yep, They are slowly getting better, seasons 6 and 7 of rwby has had pretty good animation.
They are getting better but its basically season by season.
whitepaws60 The biggest drop in quality is the writing (don’t get me wrong the fights suck too). Thank god they got a new writer for V7
Season ten is the only season that made me cry and it has always been my favorite not only because of the action but because of the characters.
Now season 13, church’s final speech is what made me cry

This was an excellent video! So well done! Glad I came across it! Looking forward to checking out older vids! Thanks and keep up the good work.

Literally watching RWBY without Monty's presence there is a noticeable sense of lifelessness in the fights of RWBY. The heart and soul of the series. this showcases the strength of animation as a medium (and further proves how ""realistic""/""live action"" remakes fail to understand the point). animation lets you focus mainly on the narrative and visual storytelling without bounding you to the limitations of physics.
A better question: "you ever wonder why we're here?"
Monty Oum is easily one of the best thing to ever happen to animation. His animation surpasses a lot of large companies and that fact that rooster teeth isn’t a huge mega corporation is really inspiring. His death hurt me deeply and none of the shows he worked on are the same.

You can really tell when Monty Passed in RWBY also. It just lacks the flow and preservation of momentum that Monty really knew how to nail.
Personally, my opinion, I think Season 17 is starting to bring it back around as far as storytelling. It has a ways to go, but to me it improved.
"Carolina's self-harming segment"
lmao
3:05 thats good because i can, pretty much everything that monty did well in red vs blue he did well in rwby, and much like how hte annimation quality dropped in red vs blue so did in rwby, you notice the cracks in volume 3 in which monty died during the production of i believe.
Watching things like this, it just makes me wonder how RT shows would be nowadays, had Monty not passed away.
Thank you Monty, for creating these amazing memories that influenced my childhood. RvB Seasons 9 and 10 will always have a special place in my heart.
You were gone too soon. RIP Sir.
Season 13s ending made me shed 1 1/2 tears. Such an impactful ending. I stopped watching after that
Season 14 was alright but stay away from seasons 15 and above
A wise decision
@@BobbyWong1069 Yeah, watch season 14. You get interesting background on the RvB characters, plus the awesome merc trilogy of episodes.
@@BobbyWong1069 17's much better but not quite at the level of seasons 6-13.
The seasons og RWBY Monty was there to create were amazing.
Very well made video, and I think the nail was hit on the head. What Monty did for not only the animation in Red VS Blue, but to really drive home a characters motivations in the action sequences. What he did took true talent and imagination.
I saw one of my videos in the intro. Thank you so much! :O
Dude, that makes a lot of sense; I kinda thought I’d just grown out of epic fights. A+
This has explain so much to me on what was missing from the fight scenes. Thank you, Sir.
Monty Oum's passing was when the series ended for me, both red vs blue and RWBY. I haven't watched anything RoosterTeeth related in years and I don't think I ever will again...
(edit) Proceeds to rewatch up to season 10
I was genuinely upset by Monty Oum’s passing. He had such an amazing future in animation and it might’ve really changed things to come.
Love the video! I have new things to watch for in animated action scenes.
Thanks for making me cry not even two minutes into this video.
But really though, I haven't thought of Monty in awhile now, thanks for bringing memories of him back.
You should check out Destiny 2's cut scene "Last Stand of a Gunslinger"
Haven't played the game in about a year now, but damn that was a good fight scene
Youve helped me understand why i felt like things were missing since monty left this is depressing
