Most of the time the strain relief is a separate part, maybe it was glued a little, sometimes spot welded with something hot but it can be removed. Try removing the wires inside the shroud and then remove the shroud by twisting it. If you are having trouble, try a drill to remove the rest of the shroud but use low rpm. If you have trouble putting it on the rest of the cable, make sure it's clean and try applying some soap or some lubricant. You can also try to blow hot air from a hairdrier on the strain relief so it gets expanded a little. In the case of Xbox you only need to solder 4-5 wires (it's basically USB I think or very close to it), it's pretty easy but other consoles have more cables. A multimeter can help you tone out the wires if needed but in this case it's easy since the wires are color coded and you still have the original. If you are replacing a wire with a new one the colors might be different, look up a pinout in that case. I usually get an extension cable and just cut off one end and use it as the new wire.
Edit: I wrote my comment before I watched your method. Just cut off the fire, don't try to solder back the ends, it's going to look awful. Cut off the cable, desolder the rest of that chunk and solder the long end of the wire directly to the PCB. You don't need that connector thingy...
I think the previous owner wrapped the wire around the controller body and the wire got twisted a lot at it's base and the shroud was tired and just broke.
While you are there, all opened up, you should clean the contacts with some IPA.

Using an extension cable as a replacement is a novel idea. I have intentions to clean the controller another time as the whole thing is dirty. Just didn't have the time for it at the moment 😁

Possible cause of wire damage, sibling rivalry.

I have a couple of controllers that have begun to do this, a used Dualshock 1 that I bought in that state and a third party PS2 controller that I got new back in the day.
Neither of them have had the wires themselves snap yet but the outer layer beginning from where it emerges from the strain relief seems to have cracked cleanly through and started to slip away.
In the case of my controller, I don't think it was ever pulled particularly hard. I think instead that the manufacturer cheaped out of the cable shroud material and it just cracked through from repetitive movement.

Most likely, and sometimes the rubber on the sheath tends to degrade over time.
