- I bought this Original XBOX from eBay for £26. It came with 13 games and 2 controllers. It was listed as "Not Working, Spares & Repairs". Will it turn on?... Well, no it won't... But is there anything else wrong with it?
Hope you enjoy!

Yes, I know I said it hadn't been powered on for years literally 2 minutes after plugging it in, but that's because I'm stupid. I checked all the capacitors on the power board and they were all in the microvolts, just to make sure it was safe to work on. 😬
Oh! You even got Halo 2 as a gift. Awesome!
shit happens ;)
If you want to do a Recap, pls use 16V/3300µF Panasonic FM for the 3300µF/6,3V Caps.
1500µF/6,3V Paasonic FM seems to be a decent replacement for the Nichicon HD around the CPU Socket.
in Voltage Regulation Circuits, the Impedance of the Capacitor is as important, if not more important than the Capacity....
Lucky you that one of the power pins was loose and disconnected, otherwise those capacitors would've been live and dangerous.
That ir sensor is called a DVD playback kit. It came with that ir receiver and a remote, it enabled the Xbox to play dvds. Without that kit you could not watch movies.
Don't be too harsh on yourself man. You just have to be more careful because a shock from one of those capacitors can lead your heart to fibrillate and we don't want that. Always use antistatic gloves mate
13:38 - the stampings on the connectors of the capacitor look like a "+" on one side and a "-" on the other. I'm pretty sure that's an easier way to tell that apart
Oh shit just caught that, the stamps is like a huge +/- nice catch
Good job Steve 👍
Thanks Vince! 👍
Plz don’t spoil! 🤪😅 love your channel

Might be an idea not to read the comments before watching, ya willy wonka!
@@RetroGamesBoy78 the one from Vince was showing up in the RUclips app.. 😅
I can't stop watching your repair videos, even while not understanding a thing going on.
When you said about replacing the thermal paste "with the incorrect amount" really made me chuckle!
Only found your videos today, came up on my recommended. Love to see broken things being repaired, or at least attempts to repair them. Keep up the good work.
Hello Steve. Ive been watching fixing videos for years and following many. I only started to follow you recently and by far you are the best! Can’t wait for more of your brilliant work. Keep it up buddy!! 🇨🇦 🇬🇧
Awesome stuff Steve! I just love the energy you give off in these videos. Congrats on overtaking me by the way, you deserve every sub ❤️
Hi Steve, I came across your videos a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoy them. I love your relaxed attitude and just plain damnable perseverance!! I'm currently doing the IPC 7711/7721 repair and rework courses and your videos have been really helpful. In other words, Thanks and keep 'em coming.
Glad to see you had more patreons now. Your channel its gonna grow so much, you deserve it. I've been watching your videos for a few days and I'm hooked!
Just like to say, I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been absolutely binge watching the majority of your content since. It has resonated a little spark within (unintentional pun), making myself want to restore all these old gems. Keep it up from a fellow Brit :)
Another great video! I discovered your channel recently and have pretty much been binging it all :p I must say I really enjoy the mix of humour and detective work trying to find out the source of the problems👌Always great to learn stuff while having a fun time.
There are many texts and videos out there about this faulty clock capacitor. It should be removed in all older XBoxes since it's known to damage stuff around it.
A mod chip might also be a great addition to it. That way it might make a cool media center device.
These XBoxes are incredible fine consoles. Even for today. They deserve to be repaired and preserved!
Good job on this one, Steve. I love all your repair videos. They gave me the impulse to finally learn soldering etc. Thanks for all your amazing videos!
Thanks Knight! Much appreciated. Good luck with your soldering! 👍
I've got a modded one sitting in storage that I fixed after I messed up loading XBMC. I managed to get the hard drive unlocked and readable by the pc I used to fix it by booting the Xbox and unplugging the hard drive data cable from the Xbox during the boot splash screen. Then plugged it into the PC when I had the bios boot sequence paused. This allowed the PC to see the drive as a native drive and allow read/write access.
just blows that all of them will die due to leaky Caps...
So if you have an OG XBOX, you have to open it up and replace the Clock Caps and the high water containing Ultra Low ESR Caps with suitable replacements (Panasonic FM! and ONLY those are suitable. As they are the only ones I found with similar Impedance to the Original Caps)
Don’t remove the clock cap in the 1.6 as it will NOT work without it. It also is a better quality and rarely if ever fails. You have the best xbox model which is 1.1. It has a 1 Meg bios chip on it. It can be TSOP flashed without requiring any mod chip at all and you get the full benefits of the mod chip as a result. You can also opt to split the TSOP into two banks of 512 and install a switch to alternate between the two. you really really should mod this as you can change the EEPROM to read that it is an NTSC model and then it’ll open up the HD resolutions with an applicable component or HDMI cable. The Euro models are stuck in 480p until the mod is complete. You may also if you want an additional challenge install the missing 4 ram modules to get it up to 128 MB of ram, which makes emulators a bit better specifically the N64.
I put a mod chip in mine back when it was new, for the life of me though I cannot find my Xbox anymore I believe my younger sister gave it away to one of her boyfriends thruout the years.
Love your videos Steve and you are correct, like others have said, its basically a dongle or a way to bypass the main menu so you could watch DVDs on the Xbox. It originally came with a remote and you had to buy it separate from the system itself. You couldn't watch DVDs without that dongle.
If you soft-mod the Xbox and put XBMC on it, you can watch DVDs / DVDRs / CDRs without the need of having that dongle.
Did that to two I have. Currently packed away in the loft. Also put larger HDD drives in. Loved the OG XBOX console.
How is it possible you don't have way more subscribers!! Love the repairs and the small touches too.
I love your video. Watched the whole thing and am commenting for the algorithm. Oh and you passed 50k! Well done. You deserve lots of success
I was super excited to see another video posted from you! Another great fix my man. Please keep them coming!
Found your channel a few weeks ago and I’m now binge watching them. Love the commentary and the gaffes and all approach (not plugged in for a year 2 minutes after pulling out the power lead, don’t know which side of the capacitor is + and - when it’s stamped into the side!). Keep up the great work and getting just the wrong amount of thermal paste every time.
Nice fix, good to see it working again! This brings back memories, as I've worked on a lot of them in my student time. The fan sound is still in my head; back then it was running a linux server for our school day and night.
Love those fix! - Don't ever stop with the music stuff - 10/10
Been watching you for a while, find it so interesting, love watching things get fixed, subbed
Hi Steve I just stumbled into your channel with this vid and I absolutely loved it! You have a great sense of humor and are great at fixing stuff. Thanks man!
It's so weird. Some time ago my wife started watching someone on YT fixing consoles. Then recently your channel appeared in my feed and now I am hooked to watching console repairs. Life is weird!
OMG loved the Mooooo. Was expecting major paste leakage with that incorrect amount of thermal pasta. Really appreciate you sharing and the hours of work. Hopefully this simple power fix will stop more Xbox's in land the landfill enjoyed it!
love watching your videos. win some lose some. this was a win for sure.
the capacitor you used is basically stamped on the leads positive and negative. noticed it in your video. keep it up my man!
RUclips suggested your videos and I’m hooked ,love your channel and playing catch-up on your other videos ,great video 👍👍
Steve! I discovered your channel last week and absolutely addicted. I went ahead and SMASHED that subscribe button. Keep the vids coming!
You're inspirational, I've gone into fixing consoles and controllers here in there. Fixing gaming items is a little hobby of mine. I would like to have my own little desk station down the road when I get my own place, your videos make me look forward to those day when they become reality 😀
Honestly love this content. Look forward to more fixes!
I've been lurking on your channel for a few days now! I just want to say I love your videos, and you've convinced me make the jump and get a microscope and learn more than basic soldering!
Hi Steve another great video… love watching your stuff never gets old…
Nice fix Steve. Looks in beautiful condition. Congrats on hitting over 50K subs. Catching up with Phil now. Well deserved.
Thanks RB! Yeah, scary stuff but exciting times! 👍
@@StezStixFix Wow if 50k was 7 days ago then you've nearly 10k in a week! Love your vids. My type of humour. Keep 'em coming!
Steve! I absolutely love the videos mate! Another awesome job well done!! I've learned a lot from watching your videos and I have been thoroughly entertained the whole time as well! Cheers!
I have an OG Xbox that had this exact problem and I never got around to fixing it. Now you've given me the motivation to dig it out after all these years. Thanks, Steve!
did you fix it?
Ahh, your first Xbox! Love this machine. One of my all time favorite consoles.
That clock cap leaking is a very well known and documented problem with model 1.0 - 1.4 Xbox units. I work for a retro game store and I actually offer the removal service for free to any customers that own an OG Xbox, because if left unattended, that cap WILL destroy the board at some point, if it hasn't already destroyed it, good job recognizing the leakage your first go-around!
I just found you're channel and I very much enjoy watching you're videos! Very interesting and entertaining content!
I think I’ve just found my new favourite channel! You’re a legend! Hurrah!
Hey Steve, just started watching, keep up the good work.
Good work as always, and I sincerely love your comedic timing. Cheers mate!
Just found this guy, he's a must watch for sure. Thanks man for the content.
It's a shame that so many Xbox's have so many problems, who knows how many consoles throughout the years have been tossed because they stopped working, or something as simple as the disc tray stopped opening. The xbox original is one of my favorite consoles and it has so many classic games. If you became quite familiar with them, one could probably make a decent living fixing them, since 90% of the problems are either with the fault disc drive or the clock capacitor. Thanks for fixing up this great machine!
Another great video Steve! The Squeaky screws were painfully! Those capacitors the 5.5v 1F have crude symbols for + and - embossed on either side in the metal.
The satisfaction of repairing these machines is fascinating thanks for sharing!
Just binge watched your whole channel mate. Looks like your channel is exploding in popularity atm. You should be on a quarter million subs by xmas, and you fully deserve the success mate ;-)
Love your channel I'm I've gone to school for Electrical engineering and computer engineering. I find your videos amazing for troubleshooting and soldering techniques without getting into the maths that we go through keep up the great work love it.
I swear you only had 12k subscribers when I started watching your videos a few weeks ago.. congrats on the growth!
Great video, thanks for taking me down memory lane. I can't remember how many OG Xboxes I modded for friends and family to be used with XBMC.
There was some kind if chip I installed which needed me drilling a whole into the case for the IR Receciver. With that you could turn on/off the Xbox with the DVD remote.
Good Times :)
Loved this fix! Hope to see more Xbox fixes in the future.
What a nice lazy Saturday afternoon treat.
I just worked on one of these, a first generation model bought in April 2003.
It used to power up and go into the menu a few months ago but now has the flashing red and green light with error codes 11 & 7. I need a new drive. Removed the clock cap, which was surprisingly okay.
Mine is October '02 also but has a Phillips DVD drive and a Maxtor HDD.
13:39 the spot welded tabs show polarity.
Thanks Gunzee, I didn't notice that at the time! I see it now 😬
As always, great video Steve
Love these video and the humour - look forward to the next one 👍👍
LOVE this channel! Would really love a tutorial explaining how you know where to look and when something is shorting out - trying to teach this stuff to a bunch of grade 10s!
Hi! New subscriber from Idaho. I really enjoy your videos.
That DVD dongle in the front was actually Microsoft's way of getting around having to pay for DVD use license, instead making the consumer pay for it. Interesting story :D
I guess they never wanted to pay Sony.
Didnt that dongle cause problems for the console?
Microsoft has never had a track record for wanting to pay for licensing, ever wondered why you have to download a BluRay player to play them on your Xbox One/S/X? :)
@@firetjue4099 never
@@KeyringHardhat You have to do that on the PS4 too, as far as I remember. PS3 could do it out of the box.
I am also not entirely sure it's a licensing thing, considering you can also play DVDs on the Xbox with the controller (you don't need the remote).
Always upvote an Xbox fix. That one had every common issue that plagues these consoles. Well done.
You might also want to tweak the resistance level on that laser Steve :)
love the vids , keep the good work :)
your hint with the disc drive belt is awesome! i also bought an old xbox some days ago and noticed the same faulty drive behaviour.
i was afraid for needing to replace the whole disc drive. now i have huge hope again, that the fix is actually easier than i thought ❤️
You can also buy new belts for ~$.50 boiling it will help but itst still 20 year old rubber so it will continue to deteriorate.
@@bobothn btw., i did what you suggested and bought some new rubber belts instead of boiling the original rubber belt (which i tried before without the wished result).
with the new rubber belt the drive works like a charm again 😍👍
Hey @stezstix fix, love your videos. Do you have a video or listing showing the equipment you use? Curious what hot air desolderer and soldering iron you use. What flux, solder etc.
Love the videos. I also enjoy hearing “get in there” after you get the stuff working. I would buy a shirt that had that phrase on it. 😂. Keep it up man and can't wait to see the next video.
Although I am neither into repairing nor gaming I thoroughly enjoy these videos 😊. Well done and funny ☺️
I have no idea what / how you are doing this , BUT cant stop watching 👍🙃
3 Fixes in no time your experience is raising up steve Good evening :)
This was excellent. Thanks for the complete step by step as I have 2 consoles with these issues. Cheers 🍻
Just found your stuff it makes me want to learn how to fix and mend just like yourself. Very inspiring i myself are more into Audio repair. You make it so entertaining. Thanks for the info i’m learning and having a laugh that’s the best way.
Cheers again
Great video! Can you please tell me what "microscope with display" you use? Or do I have it wrong?
Literally laughed out loud on the cow image. Well done Steve!
That derpy cow pic was the best.
I'm new to this channel, but i've been hooked on watching these fixes. you might have mentioned this in a prior video or live stream, but where did you learn to all this? and is this knowledge and experience an extension of a pre-youtube job? keep it up, your videos are very entertaining and insightful.. everything you are saying and doing is way over my head - i'm a corporate accountant and have no clue what are you doing, but i am big gamer so its amazing to see the inner workings of the devices i own and reminder to me to clean the dust more often from these consoles.
Keep up w. the good work. You make it look so easy getting into all the devices and mapping out the boards and diagnosing the problem. Makes me want to go buy a solder and multi from Walmart.
Request: There’s absolutely no content on RUclips about Ethernet ports on the Xbox one and up. Through internet feeds It seems to be a common issue I would love to see that. Or fix mine?! Lol.
Great to see another retro games console fixed. I know so many people who have thrown there old consoles away cuz they stopped working. There's plenty more consoles out there to be fixed.
That capacitor had the polarity symbol on the legs. Very subtle but definitely a + and -.
Really enjoyed this one. I also resurrected my own back in the day back to life. And yes, the device is the receiver for the XBOX DVD remote
Hi Steve. I know slightly less than nothing when it comes to this stuff, but I love tinkering and find your videos extremely entertaining! Someone has probably already mentioned, but that capacitor you popped in this Xbox was marked with a +& -. The symbols were pressed into the plates either side.
Sorry for the novice terminology but have a look at one and you'll notice, if you haven't already that is.
Keep up the SOLID work!
The big + and - embeded in the leads should've given a hint on the supercap. Keep up the good work!
Differently the most random channel that I found that answers all my an asked questions but I’m quite glad I found
Could you do a video overview of the tools you use? I'm learning how to solder circuitry and was wondering what gizmos and gadgets you'd recommend for soldering, cleaning boards, and stuff. Also is that white goo stuff in your videos a flux?
Omg seeing Timesplitters in the thumbnail brought me back, I LOVE that series!
I played it to test all the other discs after I stopped filming and I couldn't put it down! I played it for hours. Such a good game!
Looks like that capacitor you fitted had a + and - on either side...great vid as always...
Fantastic as always Steve :)
Really enjoying the videos.
When you used the solder sucker and the cow pic came up that was it for me you sir are insane love it
Hey, some viewers from France here ! I literally don't have any electronics skills, I'm a poor vegetable grower and I like your content man, fix items is fascinating and mandatory in my opinion in this world where we throw every items when they broke, what a waste of money and a terrible pollution for our mother earth.
Great job continue, so relaxing on top of that !
sUpErCaPaCiToR! i love you dude! my favorite techfix channel! keep up the amazing work!
Subbed!! Needed this for sure. My Halo special edition OG Xbox for some reason decided to no longer turn on. Worked find a few weeks ago.
Great video. Nice easy fix and a little tune up.
Good fix Steve!!!...The OG Xbox makes an excellent emulation machine too!!!
Back in 2003 3 I got a mod chip for the original xbox and had to solder it in for it to work. The second you opened that thing it brought back them memories. It was the first time I had ever soldered in my life.
Another good fix there Steve i had one of them too back in the day - nice 1 👍
Cheers Chris! 👍
I love my og Xbox. Still got it somewhere. Installed the Xecuter 1.x mod chip. She was a beast. Happy days

Hello Steve, very nice Videos! Its really relaxing to watch and I always love your special songs :-). PS.: Maybe you can check out, how to bring on the thermal paste better. I think the best way is, to spread it on with a spattle like a bricklayer the cement... Thank you for your Videos and the music !
