- This Series X isn't displaying properly and appears to have a broken HDMI port. Will I be able to replace the port without causing more damage?
Unlikely.
But, let's find out!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid rubber strap thing
Yeah I don't like rubbers either
@@samholdsworth420 Why?
Yes I had a similar problem with the stupid rubber strap too!
@@dvsr5296 because I'm allergic to them. Dermatitis 😭
@@samholdsworth420 That's not the real reason you don't like them. Lambskin exists.
This fix had it all, mystery, drama and a happy ending!!! Good man Steve!!!
😁 thanks Greg!

I hope they'll make a sequel with a new bad guy and a new plot :D
Yes special massage for my eyeballs.
Even had a rubber strap-on.
I like your videos because you break stuff almost as often as you fix it. Keep the good work.
It's just because he's bad at what he's doing
@@H.EL-Othemany I've looked everywhere, but can't find your RUclips channel with 100K+ subscribers, mate.
Thick pcb you should use your solder wick to remove the mount points first rather than try to heat the board all the way through all at once. Makes it a lot easier when you go topside
Or use the desolder gun...
@@oldguy9051 AKA "The Cow"
low melt would have helped too
Yeah but he was trying to do a quick fix. Ended up making it worse. No shortcuts next time steve.

Man!!! That soldering bypass was so hard to pull off! I was getting anxiety just by watching you have a go at it. You got my total respect for pulling that one off! Love your channel and your fixes man!
when he found the chip, I paused the video and looked up the chip. from the results, this chip flying off when doing HDMI replacements is very common!
then I went down the rabbit hole more and found it is not for sale anywhere and the only way to get one is from a donor board.
went back to the video and was super glad there is a way to bypass it. I know the PlayStation really does not like filters not being used and this could have ended poorly if it was Sony
You sir have the appropriate amount of balls! 👍 Sketcheriffic, and awesome fix.
Thanks Chris! 👍
but allways the incorrect amount of thermal paste
I saw that chip hit the deck when you pulled the port off, was hoping it was one of the caps that's only there for protection and not strictly necessary like I've seen on other vids.
Righteous hack in the end though, gratz.
At 6: 41when the nozzle touches the board , probably knocked it off
Another fantastic video! And I appreciate all the elements, especially the masking. When you realize just how tiny of a workspace you're really working with, it makes the repair that much more impressive.
Tuned in for solder masking, was not disappointed. Congrats on hitting 90k, well deserved!
I've gotten back into redoing my guitar electronics after seeing your videos, and that is challenging enough for me. The precision required for what you're doing is absolutely crazy.
Hey Steve, I've been watching your stuff for quite a while and you really inspired me to start this stuff myself. Thanks to your videos i managed to fix a friend's speaker, that had broke off pads on the charging port. Keep going with your amazing work!
Same ESD as the ONE X's I believe but if you bypass you will only get 1080p. Love the videos my man! Keep it up.
Fantastic as always and the look on your face when the bypass worked was priceless. Keep up the awesome videos.
Might need some merch with that shocked it's alive expression. Maybe a mug with " it's alive shocked face" on one side and "stupid game face" on the other
Sick flip on that chip Steve :) also thanks for "boring" us with the solder mask
you make electronic repair fun and hilarious, and your content is really helpful as well. you gained a new a loyal subscriber! Hello from Austin Tx!
One of my favourite videos in a while. I love when they go a bit longer. I feel like we are all here for the nitty gritty like the soldering mask. Great stuff.
Hello Steve, discovered your channel few months back and I'm having an absolute blast, thank you.
Have you considered making tutorial videos about the tools you use and how to use them? I think it'll benefit some of us knowing how to use a multimeter for example; or when and how to use a solder flux. Thx!
Love your vids man! You’ve got such a good temperament for fault finding! Very soothing watching you work
This must be one of my favourites. Good recovery on the fix. I hear that component is needed for 4k though, so maybe if you can get a replacement there will be a follow up video??
Awesome video mate. The look on your face when it worked... Priceless. Love the content. Thanks for sharing 😁
Great Job Steve! Good save with that chip! I did a video of one of these a few weeks back, and they do require a fair amount of heat to remove the port. I would recommend using LOW MELT solder, it makes the job a little easier!
Yeah, definitely wish I had some low-melt for this job. Will be using it next time for sure! 👍
@@StezStixFix You still did a great job Steve and you got it working! They are still a real pain to do even with low melt. I don't really fancy doing another one any time soon!
@@StezStixFix You can buy 70 C melting temperature solder
So glad I found this channel. It's important to show what can go wrong as well as right. You are doing something definitely right with your approach. Keep it up!!!
Congrats to the newest fix! What an amazing trip we could watch here!
Epic recovery and patience, Nice Win. Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Steve.. avid semi-amateur repairist here.. came by your channel flicking through repair videos and watched this one.. first one I've seen from you and.. its different.. but a good different haha I really liked it so I've subscribed :)
What an intense roller-coaster of emotions this was. My anxiety was through the roof. Only thing calming was seeing DAVE.
Wow this video was amazing! Keep up the great content
your sense of humour is so bloody brilliant!
Absolutely love your videos. You pretend like you don't really know what you're doing, but in reality you are a repair ninja.
Love ya work Steve.... Keep on Soldering on brother.....whats the backing track you are using for the over dub....sounds very Soulish mate...cheers
This works and I almost cried after seeing my home screen show up.. Because I had one of those "Hiroshima" repairs on mine.. All 19 PADS. 3 trace wires all the way up to the encoder chip, a new encoder, and I went through 3 HDMI ports and this bypass before it fired up! Great great video!!
Low melt solder makes it way much easier, great video Steve!
Yes, low melt solder is the magic element here. 👍
Nicely done Steve 👍😎
Thanks Vince, felt good to get this one going. I hope it's a lasting fix, but time will tell. I'm keeping this for myself anyway, so I'm happy with how it turned out! If those chips become available to buy at some point, I will definitely get one👍
@@StezStixFix Yes, I'm sure it will be fine. Maybe just ground yourself before changing out the HDMI cable if you been doing the running man on thick piled carpet (don't deny it). Phil (TheCod3r) will no doubt be able to sort you out with one of those ESD chips in the future if needed 👌👍👍👍
@@Mymatevince I can indeed lol. I'll dm him and hook him up with one ;)
@@itsconsolefix Well done Phil👌👍👍👍👍
@@itsconsolefix Nice one Phil. I was going to suggest that too as I know you do lots of console repairs. I know you used to be into coding so you might like my latest video, where I had to reverse engineer some software and write a keygen to access a service menu in an inverter, as technical support were not being very helpful! I also found some Easter eggs in the program.
Low melt solder is the way to remove connecters and avoid any mess.
6:40 You can see that IC go tata and landing on the mat. it was as you rested the board against the hot-air gun, Steve, OOPS!
New to your channel, Earned yourself a sub. Liking the format and approach to fixing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Well impressed that you got it working! I would have no idea what to do after that. Well done :)
I've no idea how you managed to pull off this one, but great job and great video!
Thanks Adam! Yeah, I genuinely didn't think that bypass would work! 👍
Great job. Love your videos. I guess putting it fully back together solved the issue of no beep when turning it on.
Well done you, I am so pleased that you got it working.
Amazing video thanks Steve
Great video, I believe it's a solder mask you need. These are used for repairing main boards in mobile phones and are usually on a sheet on which you would typically use a solder paste to create the solder balls with the correct spacing.
What an awesome job Dave !
(It was great soldering skill too, Steve.)
Best video and fix ever!!!Nice job Steve
Well done snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Brilliant video. Welcome back Dave!!
Amazing work....great vid buddy.
Another great fix Steve! 👍
enjoyed this & your other videos please keep up the awesome work = )
Love your videos, Dave.
Hi Steve great work as always.
Just curious if you find that aluminum tape works better than kapton tape for protecting plastic components
As soon as that chip dropped..... I swore for you. But daaaaamn man you pulled it back. Fantastic video mate 👍👍👍
Awesome video as always!!!!!!!
Great fix Steve really enjoyed this one
Awesome fix... tricky but very successful 👏👏👏
Hey Steve! I love your content, you should totally try to fix faulty/broken Guitar Hero/Rock Band guitars or drum sets, there’s a LOT of them that get tossed into the trash or sold for a few bucks
brilliant ! love your videos ,keep up the good work!
i actually cheered when that came on!!, fantastic recovery! ow and that rap was on point!
ur videos are brilliant love ur humour in them!! keep it up mate
I enjoyed that thanks. Any idea why there is a workaround fror that chip ? or was it just they had the same issue as you and accidentally removed it ?
low melt solder is your friend Steve. just mix the current solder with low melt and Viola easy peasy lemon squeezy
Yeah, in hindsight I wish I had some. Definitely will next time! 👍
Just found your channel a few weeks ago. Love the content, Dave & VO Steve. Any suggestions on removing hdmi that some genius hot glued in? Surprisingly there's no output to TV 😂. Keep ... Solid 😊
Shiver me timbers that was entertaining, great to see a real world repair and not a perfect HDMI port replacement.
Hats off for giving the bypass a try and balls or no balls I that that was a solid result.
Just discoverd your channel and its awesome. Subbed.
I love your expression when you fix things. It's awesome
Hey there, first of all, thanks for the great video :D
What is the name of the monitor you are using from the beginning of the video?
Love your videos Steve
Great repair Steve! This reminds me of when I used to do a lot of surface mount mods and rework on prototype phones. You spend literally hours working under the microscope then when you look at it with your eyes, it's so tiny, you think, how the heck did I just do that?!!... Those ESD devices are there to protect the device so it will be a tad more vulnerable now 😉
Vulnerable to what?
@@mandokir ESD, static electricity
Hi Steve, why didn't you use some solder wick to remove the solder from the attachement lugs of the HDMI port, and then heat the pin side ? Great work anyway, Cheers from France 😉
Cool vid, this is one of my favourites I've seen. Just wondering would you have shown the video still had that chip bypass thing not been a thing? Also, do you think it was just those 2 little caps touching, rather than the chip being nackered (the first time you tested after re-applying the chip that fell off)? (oops, I watched it again and noticed you had already separated those caps)...I wonder what this chip was supposed to do lol
These videos are fantastic, yeah the others may be able to solder better, and pretend to know they know what they are doing, but you're a much better presenter and entertainer. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Steve for the awesome vide. Say hi to Dave from me. Did he enjoy the short vacation.
😁 thanks Frederick! Dave says Hi. And yes, I think he enjoyed being in a box in the shed for a week. Nice change of scenery for him! 🤣
Lol Steve’s reaction to it working reminds me of Austin Powers and him trying not to talk about the mole 😂
love every single video you do
Great video! What does the (now removed) chip do normally?EDIT I scrolled below and found the response.
What type and size jumper wire do you use ? And great video and wish everything was that easy to bypass lol.
What a brilliant fix! What's the chances of finding out you could bypass that chip! Brilliant video as usual 👏
I found your video and also the way you present it very amazing .
You make my day , i thought it was me trying to fix something easy and making it worst by mistake and it becomes horribly hard and longer 😅
Well done Steve for getting it to work even though it gave you a headache 🤕 keep your videos coming sir you are a gemstone 💎 😊
"Want to skip" - What an insult! NEVER! Song is great!
No way 😮😮😮 that is crazy Dave congrats 👏👏👏
Hi Stezstix I Love all your videos and the Raps :) I was just wondering im going to try and fix some of my kids stuff that requires soldering can i ask what is the Microscope you use please ? I understand you are a Busy legend so If you dont get back to me i understand :) Keep up the good work
I rarely understand the use of that huge hot air thingie, and this one is no exception... It melts everything in a large area. Can't you just use solder wick and the Moo-machine? :D
Sadly not on stuff like this, it wouldn't be able to remove the solder. I had the hot air on 500 degrees, and it was still only just enough to get the port off. With an iron or desoldering gun, it would've gone nowhere!
That Home Alone face was satisfying as hell. Stellar job, mate!
One of the best channels on RUclips on your way to 100k subs steve
Great fix mate very entertaining video
Baller job, Steve!
New visitor to your channel and wow love it and yes you sir have mighty balls lol. Them moments when you think its not going to work then boom absolutely priceless awesome 😊
Fantastic video
Good job, my dude!
Nice one Steve didnt think you were going to fettle this one for a while
Always love d rap at d start 🤣 great job as always
Hooray not a short. Long form rules.
What an emotional rollercoaster, good fix! Forgetting the Gimp strap is standard practice.
Well done Steve!
can you tell me where you got the monitor from please
Low melt solder is always worth a try.
Nice save Steve. I would recommend to pick up some Chip Quik low melt solder. This would have taken for a couple of minutes with it :)
Discovered you this week. Been watching before bed and feel inspired. Going to buy a kit for this kind of stuff and then fix broken stuff in the future. Fuck planned obsoletion. Any advice on a cheap kit to get started? Probs get a soldering iron and one of your connections testing things. The beeper. And then start going from there.
Quality, love your videos 👌
?
Low melt solder is your friend. And clean your soldering iron tip, please. What you lacked in reballing, you definitely surpassed in bodge wiring! Nice work!
Steve, you looked like the painting named ' The Scream ' when you turned on the Xbox and it WORKED !😂
