Removing the gray part (as explained at 7:40) revealed the real problem for me. The left joystick had a small breakoff part stuck behind the gray part. Once I removed it, both joysticks stopped drifting immediately! Thanks a bunch for mentioning it even though you hadn't personally tested it! Some information is better than none! Thanks for a great video, and for helping me fix my controller!
Thank you dude, took the risk and after days of trying I finally found a fix. All I can do is thank you for making this amazing tutorial. Much love brother 🙏
Tried all steps except #6. Didn't want to risk damaging the small components. I ended up flooding everything with electronic contact cleaner, blowing everything out with compressed air. That finally worked and fixed the stick drift.
Dude, it worked! Thank you! I had to take the little discs out of the analog stick because the simpler fixes didn’t work, but sure enough, this worked! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for this! The step by step tutorial was very easy to follow! I did try it, but unfortunately I was not able to fix my controller. It was worth a shot, though, as it was already unusable. But would definitely recommend your video for anyone needing to get inside their controller.
I've had a series s for less than two years and just a few weeks ago I started having drift problems on the right stick in the up direction. I saw this video and thought it would be good and it was!!! I tried method 6 of yours and it worked! It was definitely risky, and it was my first time trying it and I followed it the whole way through and fixed my stick drift!! Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial!
I was a bit skeptical that it would ruin my controller for good and that's exactly what happened. Be very careful with step 6, once I opened those green flaps after 5:42 then my controller was never the same again, now there is an unfixable permanent drift. That part is very sensitive and didn't like being opened. Unless you really don't mind losing a controller I don't recommend going past step 5.
Mine was the opposite, I had the most horrible drift and cleaning that 1 green door thingy, boom no more drift, I think it’s very easy to break so just be careful
It’s likely you were just too rough with that step. The metal on the disc is extremely fragile and prone to breaking off. If you break a piece off it’s super tiny and can get lodged somewhere. Not to mention if you don’t replace it properly it will just flat out break. It goes in a specific orientation or it will just break your stick.
Method 6 did it for me. Thanks a lot mate :) I did it on my second go as at first glance it seemed too difficult for me to disassemble it so much, but it turned out to be quite easy. Good luck everyone!
Update: After a while another issue with the same sensor appeared. I've cleaned everything again but it did nothing this time. Then I opened different sensor to compare the tiny disks (6:40) inside them and it looked like the disk in faulty sensor was a bit deformed - this little nudge in the middle of the moving part was not there, it was flat and it turned out to be too tiny to bend it like that. When all hope seemed lost, I remembered that I have a very old (at least 13 years) logitech controller laying around somewhere. I've decided to see if It's analog sensor uses the same disk by any chance. It did, and placing it in my xbox controller fixed my issue :) So after my experience with all of this I can give you the following advices: - be extra carefull when taking out and putting back in the disk - If you have an old controller with analog sticks somewhere see if you can replace the disk part to fix your issue Cheers!
Method 6 worked perfectly for me! Left analog stick, one of the doors was spotless, one had multiple alcohol soaked q-tips worth of gunk. Very happy to not have to buy a new controller, thanks so much for the video, incredibly helpful and to the point. Legend.
I was able to fix my Aqua Shift controller with this tutorial, method 6 did it in the end. Thank you so much for putting this together, it is truly a service to the gaming community. Liked and subbed!
Ah, I have that controller. I think I might just buy another one, I don't want to risk breaking my controller if I'm going to end up buying another anyway.
Left Analog stick was drifting, tried everything to fix it. Was going to toss it and buy a new one. Opening it up and cleaning those little "green" doors did the trick for me. Thanks alot! Great video!
thank you man! my controller was drifting after 6 years of use and I was about to buy a new one thinking it was old, I just pushed the joystick out as you showed and cleaned it that way and it's working perfectly fine now!! thanks a lot
At 1:45, method five worked for me. I tried everything up to opening it up with no luck. My left thumb stick y-axis was acting up. I q-tipped all the spots you recommended but did not work. So, I opted to separate the green door enough with a dental pick and tried to clean it with a Q-Tip but evidently that wasn't quite good enough, as the next step I took was to actually flush out the potentiometer with the alcohol, and after blowing out the excess alcohol and cycling the controller a bit, replaced the battery and top cover and then gave it a go and it is now working perfectly! Thanks for the video!
Method 6 worked great for me! Thank you a lot! Btw, do not hesitate to bend the little spire metal back once you took it out of the green container and cleaned it.
Experimental method 7 is what finally worked. The gray piece removes in tact and can be placed back just an FYI for anyone worried about trying this method. Thanks for the vid!!
Wow thank you so much. My character was just randomly going up and I couldn't do anything about it. Then I saw your video. Step 1 fixed it. I was like "no way some debry just got into my controller" but it actually worked.

Method 6 was the solution for me. Took about 2 hours since it was my first time doing something like this and I was being extra careful. The Q-tip had dark smudges when cleaning the inside of the green door, so I figured that is what was causing the drift. Closing the green door took longer for me than I thought, but eventually I got it to close. Many thanks for the solution!

I really didn’t wanna have to go for method 6 which looked scary even for an avid hardware guy like me but the other 5 didn’t do the trick. Decided to try it anyway because I couldn’t bother waiting for the replacement and it worked like a charm !
Went in order, gave them serious tries, the straw worked almost immediately, a single white medium sized crumb flew out as soon as I blew into the problem area. Although I know most of you will not be this lucky (I'm surprised myself) it is worth a shot especially considering my controller just went out of warranty and is still otherwise in very good shape. Thank you OP.
I did the sixth method. Eventually it worked well. There is still a very little bit of drift, but it is inside the default deadzone, so it's not even a problem. Thank you for this video. I am very appreciate.
I want to thank you for this, my left thumbstick was making most games actually unplayable. Removing the grey door is exactly what my controller needed, i appreciate you mentioning that even though you didnt exactly believe in it. It seems like removing the grey door works when the stick is having trouble returning to the neutral position, at least in my case.
This video is great! Method 6 worked for me. I was scared to go that deep but he predicted everything that would happen and I got rubbing alcohol and cleaned the green boxes and it fixed my horrible stick drift. I could visually see gunk stuck inside so I’m definitely going to do this to all my old Xbox one controllers that I leave around with horrible stick drift. Thank you!!!!
Same issue. 360 controller is over a decade old and still functioning, One never broke until I've sold my Xbox, but the Series S controller drifted after a few months of playing.
Thank you very much! Simple, structured, straight to the point and without bs, how I like it. Will try the steps, perhaps without step 7, ain't risking that deep.
Thank you so much! Worked like a charm! As you stated the most struggle i had was with the grips... Also my controller was built with security torx screws which have a little pin in the middle. For those of you who also have those screws, you can unscrew them with a small flathead if you dont have the right torx bit. There was also only one connector cable for me. I followed the list up until Method 6, which seemed to do the trick for me. The inside of the "disk-chamber" of my Y-Axis was fairly dirty. I cleaned both of the disks and chambers with Isopropyl. Putting it back together i unfortunately broke one of those tabs in the grip. Both of the grips definitely feel "looser" now but man...the drift is gone... Cheers!
Thank you for making this! I noticed my PowerA controller has a big gap between the left trigger and bumper if you hold down the left trigger. I lifted up the left stick, held the trigger down, blew compressed air through the gap, and now my controller works perfectly!
@@solaria5513 I think it was just some crumb or a dust buildup; something got in under the joystick. Pulling on the stick so it sort of popped up let the compressed air blow whatever it was out.
@@smokingiscool599 Thank you! I was asking though what was the problem with your controller? Was it just stick drift or was it clicking in the L3 or left stick button? My left stick button is all screwed and I was wondering

This video is amazing! I used method 6 but instead of removing the back and fully removing the green doors I just ever so slightly pried the green doors open from the front and left them slightly open like I’m talking a millimeter or two and I just left it like that and that seemed to have done the trick!

Method 6 was the winner!! I was hoping any of methods 1-5 would work because I was dead afraid to go so deep into the electronics of the controller. But since methods 1-5 didn't help, the controller was out of warranty anyways, and the drift was no longer tolerable, I decided to give method 6 a shot. Got the precision toolkit, followed the video step- by- step, and voila! No more drift! I feel like I can do anything now. Thank you so much for this very detailed video!
I used a white Xbox One S controller for like 6 years with a LOT of drops and hits, it stills works perfectly. I have been using the black Series X controller for like less than a year and it is already failing:/
Samee Did method 5 and used a syringe and a mini thin tweezer and properly cleaned it for like 30 minutes. It went from drifting all the way to the top and inconsitently to the bottom to only a minor drift up and a bit right, but so little that it isnt really noticeable
Thanks a lot. Method 6 worked for me. It wasn’t necessary to retire the sensor at all. Just a little open and wd 40. Let the product to “dry” a little (4 hours)
Lol i hate when the method doesnt work for me but everyone else in comments is saying it worked for them. Breath of fresh air to see someone else who it doesnt work for
For what it's worth, I track the work/doesn't work comments. For this video, I estimate about 90% will be able to solve their issue if they do every method. 60% of people will solve it by doing only the non invasive cleaning methods shown early in the video.
Thankyou. I spent 5 hours combing through instruction, drop down menus, posts, etc and contacted Microsoft support. Unplugging, rebooting 3x. Not once was "lift the toggle" suggested...and that's all it was, on both controllers! I was rebuilding a car engine because it was out of gas.
I have a feeling mine is damage related, I just don’t know how. I do know that at one point it fell pretty hard and the left bumper was difficult to press for a while, as if it was bent. Now it feels like normal again, I think. But the left stick drifts with or without contact after a few seconds, sometimes it doesn’t. So weird.
Same here, I got my controller on the 22nd of may of this year as a birthday gift cause I asked for a new controller, my new one has already got drift and I feel that it's something to do with the firmware update, I recently did another controller firmware update and ever since it hasn't been the same and now my camera joystick has upwards drift
@@oe-hr5ft mine too, it drifts upwards sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. I truly believe it has to do with the new controller update because my controller was fine before I updated it, and i take care of my controllers. It’s basically brand new. I used a method that was somewhere between 5 and 6. I opened the doors partially but not enough to remove the discs. I dropped some iso and blew air into the openings. It worked like a charm! After failing several other tries and a lot of frustration, this is what did it for me. Just came here to say that if method 5 didn’t work and you aren’t comfortable taking those tiny, delicate discs out, you can try opening them partially, but also VERY carefully.
Same here. MS really cheaped out with these new controllers. They are obviously defect rather than worn out or abused. There should be a class action lawsuit.
@@TheSleepingDog1165 they didn’t spend any money on good thumbsticks so it does stick drift by itself without any use and because of that they should do a lawsuit

I had insane drifting on my left stick and just cleaning from the inside seemed to have helped greatly. It still moves a tiny tiny bit but stops when I check the calibration, but it's not even registered in games. Thanks man! You just saved me 60€.
I actually went back and did all the steps to try and get rid of the drifting completely (still had some that was getting on my nerves). I was afraid at first as well, but if you're a bit careful, especially with those delicate disks at the sticks, you'll be fine.
I was having issues where the controller stick was registering the wrong directions (going left while pointing right, etc.) Method one actually helped me mitigate the issue! Thank you so much for this video!

Thank you for sharing the fixes. They work. I ended up using Method 6. Not only the disc but the contact inside the green door needs to be cleaned too. And make sure the flat dent of the disc has to point up when you are putting it back inside the green door.

Once I removed it, both joysticks stopped drifting immediately! Thanks a bunch for mentioning it even though you hadn't personally tested it! Some information is better than none!

Tried all steps except #6. Didn't want to risk damaging the small components. I ended up flooding everything with electronic contact cleaner, blowing everything out with compressed air. That finally worked and fixed the stick drift.
You did good. Just did #6 and it utterly broke my analog that is now unresponsive with a permanent drift.
You're a lifesaver, I did all the first 6 fixes and now it works like new, thank you!
Ok, cool, you might still be able to sell the broken one on Ebay and get something back, or keep it for future parts.
I've had a series s for less than two years and just a few weeks ago I started having drift problems on the right stick in the up direction. I saw this video and thought it would be good and it was!!! I tried method 6 of yours and it worked! @@ehlander2954 there is no way to fix stick drift it has nothing to do with microsoft wanting money.
@@ehlander2954 damn I wish someone told me that before I bought this crap lol I'm back to using ps4 controller on pc
Method 6 worked for me perfectly fine. Taking your time is important.
Method 6 did it for me. Thanks a lot mate :)
I did it on my second go as at first glance it seemed too difficult for me to disassemble it so much, but it turned out to be quite easy.
It did, and placing it in my xbox controller fixed my issue :)
So after my experience with all of this I can give you the following advices:
- be extra carefull when taking out and putting back in the disk
- If you have an old controller with analog sticks somewhere see if you can replace the disk part to fix your issue
Cheers!

Great to hear!

THANK YOU METHOD 6 I CAN FINALLY RE-ENJOY MY OVERPRICED STARFIELD CONTROLLER THAT LASTED LIKE 3 MONTHS
I really appreciate the help. I went through 3 controllers in less than three months last year. Those early controllers were super flawed. All of them had stick drift. I used my warranty until it ran out. It's a real shame that I cannot fix this because it's practically new.
Three controllers in less than three months? This drift thing is a bit of an epidemic.
Use one of the updated Xbox one controller that have Bluetooth built in. Those are the Xbox controllers with the least chance to get stick drift

Method 6 finally worked on my XBOX ONE controller that had been drifting forward.
I've been a subscriber for ages for entertainment purposes only and now we've crossed the threshold into DIY. What can't you do! 😁👍
Thank you so much, I was able to fix my 2 weeks old xbox controller using method 6. I really didn’t wanna have to go for method 6 which looked scary even for an avid hardware guy like me but the other 5 didn’t do the trick. Decided to try it anyway because I couldn’t bother waiting for the replacement and it worked like a charm !
How did you do that?
What was wrong with it? Was it the clicking of the joystick? Mine doesn't stay clicked and it's hard to use now.
Newer controller got a nasty drift. Did fixes 1, 2, and 4. Tested it, and the drift is gone. Thanks and good video😎
I did the sixth method. Eventually it worked well. There is still a very little bit of drift, but it is inside the default deadzone, so it's not even a problem. Thank you for this video. I am very appreciate.
SUPER helpful, thank you so much! I've been having trouble with joystick drift for a while and didn't think to manually clean the controller!
Did it work??
I went through all methods and finally method 7 worked for me. The drift is nowhere near as bad as it was. Thank you very much!

I’ve never had this issue until the Series x/S. It’s driving me insane. The easy hacks didn’t work, so I’m about to experiment with the take apart…

Cheers!
Can confirm the right tiny Flathead works
Thank you for making this! I noticed my PowerA controller has a big gap between the left trigger and bumper if you hold down the left trigger.
I lifted up the left stick, held the trigger down, blew compressed air through the gap, and now my controller works perfectly!
What was wrong with it? Was it the clicking of the joystick? Mine doesn't stay clicked and it's hard to use now.

Did method 5 and used a syringe and a mini thin tweezer and properly cleaned it for like 30 minutes.
It's better to use 91% isopropyl. There's less water in that mix.
It is, but if you have one and not the other, it's not worth the drive to the store.
The clean from the inside with rubbing alcohol and a vacuum worked perfect! Thanks. T8 driver for this needed.

Do you play madden?

My controllers has been broken for so long.. thanks, step four worked for me
I had insane drifting on my left stick and just cleaning from the inside seemed to have helped greatly. It still moves a tiny tiny bit but stops when I check the calibration, but it's not even registered in games. Thanks man! You just saved me 60€.
Did you do step 5 or 6 for the cleaning. I’m afraid that I will destroy it if I attempt step 6 lol
I actually went back and did all the steps to try and get rid of the drifting completely (still had some that was getting on my nerves). I was afraid at first as well, but if you're a bit careful, especially with those delicate disks at the sticks, you'll be fine.
The last step was very annoying but worth it. Thanks!
I was having issues where the controller stick was registering the wrong directions (going left while pointing right, etc.) Method one actually helped me mitigate the issue! Thank you so much for this video!
Thanks! I really apreciated the fact that you show every step per method. I tried method 5 several times without any success, However, after just 1 try of method 6 my controller is working as new, also it wasn't as difficult as i thought.
My stick was drifting up alot and Method 3(Vacuum) actually worked for me. Must have just been a big piece of random debris. Thanks so much
Well I can happily say it worked! Loved how thorough and understandable this tutorial was. You earned a sub!
Thank you for sharing the fixes. They work. I ended up using Method 6. Not only the disc but the contact inside the green door needs to be cleaned too. And make sure the flat dent of the disc has to point up when you are putting it back inside the green door.
#6 fixed my issue. I used a q-tip and alcohol. After cleaning my q-tip was black after cleaning one of them. I put it back together and it had 0 issues. Thanks for the help.
Chiming in with the method 6'ers! I was about to suck it up and buy another controller when I searched for fixes.
