- 15 OBS Things You (Might) Do Wrong Everyday and how to improve this.
1) Choose the wrong frame rate for your content (30fps vs 60 fps)
2) Select the wrong resolution for your canvas vs output scaled resolution
3) Auto-enable “Global Audio Devices” which causes resource issues and doubling
4) Use Simple mode vs advanced mode in the “Output” tab
5) Select NVENC encoder if it is available vs x264
6) Manually selecting settings for Recording vs streaming
7) Increasing audio bitrate to 320 to double quality
8) Livestream to one platform when you could be streaming to multiple and growing faster
9) Put everything into one scene rather than splitting into multiple scenes
10) Not using mic filters to make yourself sound better
11) Not syncing your audio and video using Advanced audio properties
12) Not muting and hiding irrelevant audio sources in your mixer
13) Using studio mode when you don’t actually need it
14) Not streaming at the right bitrate
15) Not checking your stats on a test stream/recording in “View” → stats

Thank you Awall for this in depth pro tips to better OBS. As a Canadian Military Veteran 27.5 years of service and disabilities from my military service, I use OBS , Live Elements and Now because of your expert advice Restream. I try to help other veterans, USA / CANADA in filing claims to VAC " Veterans Affairs" for their disabilities all the while streaming a game, be it Star Citizen, Call of Duty or ONE on ONE. This is invaluable advice and FREE, whats not to like. I may be taking you up on a Phone call / video for support advice in the near future for moving this even better and father. THANK YOU so much for making this video Andrew.
I'm 56 and have been struggling with all this stuff and I just want to say that you are awesome. Thanks.
Super high quality value on OBS! Really appreciate the time and effort in this. This is gold. Seen several things I need to up my OBS settings game on.
Glad it helped!
Great TIPS.
#14 is actually Megabits not Megabyte. - Megabit /Gigabit are used for speed and network measurement. Megabyte/Gigabyte are used for storage and file sizes.
Correct
And if you want to convert between the two, Megabyte -> Megabit multiply by 8; Megabit -> Megabyte divide by 8
And byte is capital B (megabyte is MB), while bit is lower case b (megabit is Mb). Other than that this is a GREAT video. I'm going to be spending a couple of hours with it to fix up my OBS! Thank you!!!
That was bothering me too. I really doesn't make a difference in this video, but in most cases, there is a big difference (8x) between x bits/sec and x Bytes/sec.
checked the comments just to make sure i wasn't crazy on this one. thanks for confirming.
Explaining the different scenes was very useful, I always wondered how people did that so easily. Nothing I had seen so far about setting up OBS mentioned separating scenes. edit: A little tip for others, I created a new scene with a second sound source one day, and this created a reverb effect in my stream which I personally couldn't hear until I played it back later. The stream was over an hour long and no one said anything! Always do a test recording of your settings to see how things might look and sound before you go live.
Wow. People actually use just one scene for everything? I knew, day 1, that I had to create multiple scenes. Great video.
That’s me…😂 everything in one scene …..😅piano, metronome, my face and musical staff. No wonder my obs crashes. This video is so informative ❤
Hey thanks, you just showed an almost seventy-year-old woman, and art teacher, how to even begin to understand how to use OBS. Now I just need to add my iPevo document camera and/or GoPro and use it all within zoom and I will up my gain at least tenfold!!
You're awesome. Appreciated waiting 5min until throwing in the sponsor and also keeping things super professional and brief as possible with enough info.
Lots of great points even for someone using OBS for over a year now daily. I’m going to have to make some changes!
Thank you.
New OBS user here - this was great - will look over all your videos next - Thank you - Appreciated!
Thank you for great tips! I watch your videos from Japan! Many videos explained in Japanese are inadequate, so these are very helpful.
You're very welcome!
I was messing with the canvas size yesterday because I wanted to test streaming in 4K. OBS won't allow a canvas size bigger than the screen's current resolution. So, I can't stream 4K from my 1080P laptop. I had to use my desktop screen which is wide 5K screen, and force it to 4K.
Dude, how the hell do you have only this many subs and views on this video? This is such quality content omg, thank you so much for the tips!
This is amazing information, all these little settings are what tripped me up the most when I started streaming, and I couldn’t find all this info in one place. Thank you, I’m going back to check all my settings again! 🙌🏽👏🏽🙏🏽
This guy is absolutely amazing and I've learned a ton. Thank you! Though, I did notice this video stagger and stutter a few times due to some of the performance settings he suggests. Also, when he says "megabytes" referring to your upload rate, he should have said "megabits". Subtle difference but important. Internet speed is measured in bits per second, and 1 byte = 8 bits. When making your quality performance calculations this makes a huge difference.
Omg thank you so much. I am using Obs for recording, taking most of my post production out by doing most things live. I had really good video but choppy audio. I couldnt understand why bc the audio from my rodecaster I would have to take the audio from my rodecaster pro and synch it up in post production.
I JUST WATCH YOUR CHANNEL FOR THE FIRST TIME IS SO MUCH INFO THANK YOU THE BEST THING IS YOU SPEAK SLOW AND UNDERSTANDABLE FOR NOT NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS THANKS
Microphone settings (Comressor, limiter, etc.) are personal, there isn't a single best setting like you preach. Should've explained each slider to ease that process.
A tip from me: Scenes, Sources, Buttons, ... panels are all draggable, and can be moved to those empty wasted grey areas around preview window. Then OBS takes less space, can appear next to live chat window and fit. If you're inspecting some little detail and need to zoom in on preview: pop it out into separate window (right-click).
You really helped me with the audio device part because I had double audio and extra microphones like you said thanks for that.
Couldnt find the awall podcast channel you mentioned.
Lots of great, factual info. However, your audio sync is off by approximately -0.300s. You might want to fix that.
Great tips, always professionally done with a bit of humor. Thanks
You are the first comment on this new channel!
Great video!
One thing I wish OBS had was something similar to what Pro Tools does. You can hide a channel strip in PT and you can hide and disable a channel as well. I used that all the time when I’m tracking or mixing. I wish you can disable and hide audio tracks as well instead of muting them. As an extra precaution, I also lower the volume to 0 to the audio sources I don’t use in OBS as well.
How in the hell did you get yourself to look so big in your OBS? And how did you remove your room's background? Niiiice!!
14:50 I downloaded the audio track of this RUclips video (192kbps). RUclips doesn't allow 320kbps so it's pointless to set that high, unless your profile is ripping audio from games.
Many Thanks! Some great tips...off now to do some fine tuning and testing...👍
Have fun!
Ok, so why did I only find your channel now. Awesome stuff!
GREAT Video but if i disable all audio devices i lose my "desktop audio" so how do i setup the audio stuff after?
AWALL, I'm a new subscriber after watching this video. This is very informative and helpful. Then I watched some of your other videos and I am thrilled with the quality insight that you have to offer. You are the man! Thank you and I will watch for those notifications.
All the best,
- Robert
Do not use simple! Man , you are a great teacher!
Are you using the Epic Pen app to annotate on screen?
Do you have a video about your annotation implementation? Thanks!
You should only use restream if you are not twitch affiliate thank you for the audio i know the rest :D
is using the graphic card for output the same for mac ... don't think it uses Nvidia, by the way. your info is AWESOME and Life saving
A practical and helpful check list. Thankyou.
Thanks for pointing these things out , just started streaming and your pointers are very usefull.
Excellent tutorial! I wish I found this video 2yrs. ago when started my channel and wouldn't have to experience all the issues you pointed out (especially audio echos, audio/video syncing, etc.). For 4k recording, is there a recommended common FPS value?
You videos are amazing. No BS, I have learned so much in such a short period of time - thank you! Do you have any suggestions (or videos) on incorporating either an eGPU or a separate "gaming" machine into my setup? right now I'm using my work laptop (macbook pro) primarily for feeding zoom through OBS. At times it can get glitchy and I can hear the fan screaming for mercy. I suspect a better setup would be to separate them and use the laptop primarily for powerpoint or whatever I'm demonstrating in my web browser and then have OBS, Zoom, my DSLR webcam and mic coming into a separate system. Thank you again, guilty as charged of at least half of the above offenses!
thank you for your question and thank you for sparking a new video idea , surely in the we will make a video about this!
@@notcorruptmedia That would be awesome, and timely. Could you do something about the cost of gaming/streaming PCs and components while you're at it? ;)
Great videos man.. Getting more info than I expected..!!
I would like to hire you for an hour or so. I set everything up as i thought you suggested, now my output volume is so low i can't even hear it... i started backtracking and now im in a terrible mess. 🙏 please, can you help
This is great. Thank you for all you do. One thing I've always been curious about I can't find an answer to is how to best scale a camera feed. My camera is 1080p60, but I resize it in most scenes. Should I be using a 'scale/aspect ratio' filter? Or just manually resize it? Not sure what the optimal method is for both picture quality and performance.
Wow very helpful thank you!
Thanks for all of these tips😃 I need to do some adjustments 😂
but with restreaming, what if you get affiliate with any of the stream sites? Twitch, RUclips, Facebook, they don't allow restreaming to other competitors, wouldn't you then need to kill the others off? Won't that hurt in the end if your (personal) goal is to become an affiliate on one of the platforms?
Excellent video!!
Very helpful tips but do these setup work for iMac computer ?
Little John Military Vet. and Photo Enthusiast for about 20+ plus years, as WE, all know everything is either video, streaming or digital. So, I've been adapting and trying digital and I've been wanting to also do the streaming thing
Bottom line!!... I just spent several hours watching others and " Your Video is Awesome to the point and easy to understand.. I just shared it some of my Battle Buddies, Keep up the Awesome work and I subcribed looking forward to more information.
Thanks LJSxxx-23
Thanks! Working, liked :)
Hi Awall great tips! Thanks.. How do you make a setting the on screen demo as background with you on the right of it? With OBS also or use another apps? Please reply.. Thank you so much..
Awesome video! Thank you for all of the tips!
awesome thank you so much fam audio is mint now
I use virtual camara obs for streaming with Stream Yard. This OBS-settings are also useful ? Or Stream Yard is regulating all this settings?
Excellent Thank you Best on here for tech and so helpful, Thank you 😀
When is it appropriate to set fps to 29.97 instead of 30? I thought video cameras shot at 29.97.
love the prana hat
I’m trying to use OBS with my ATEM 810 mini pro iso video switcher for live streaming.
OBS will identify NDI, my webcam. Yet OBS doesn’t see my ATEM.
I’m running Mojave 10.14.6 on my mid 2013 laptop.
Blackmagic is telling me I’m not supposed to be able to stream using 8.6 with Mojave. I might need to uninstall this newer version of the ATEM software and use this older version which might allow me to have OBS see my ATEM 810..
Just to be sure that I am understanding this correctly. My upload speed was 123 Mbps. Therefore, my streaming bitrate (max) is 70% of that x 1000 = approx. 26,000 Kbps. Correct? If so, then I can then adjust
my recording output bit rate to a higher rate than that? What rate would you then suggest I adjust my recording bitrate to? Thanks for your input. This video is fantastic. I will be following you from here on out as I try to dive into the world of content creation.
hey mate thanks for reaching out about this so your recording bitrates depends on what gpu you have i mean is it from nvidia or amd? but if its from nvidia a value of 60,000 would be perfect as 60,000 is the limit of the nvenc encoder! above than that will not be not doing anything as the gpu will only be using 60,000 only
@@notcorruptmedia Thanks for the reply. I currently have nvidia GEForce RTX 2060 series GPU. I have adjusted my recording bitrate to 60,000. Thanks again for your help and very informative and entertaining channel. I,m sure I will have more questions down the road.
Thanks buddy, it worked
Great video - thanks a lot! On MacBook: which encoder do vou recommend? X264 or Apple-VT-H264-Hardwareencoder or Apple-VT-H264-Softwareencoder to take the load off the processor ?
I have one question. My canvas screen is a 5120x1440 samsung ultrawide but it wont let me have a 1920x1080 output (scale). are there any ways around that so i dont lose any of the size of my main screen. or do i say bugger it and set them both to 1920x1080 and call it a day. lol
Broooooo you are the absolute GOAT 🐐
Thank you so much!
Hi, Love your video's! My cameras and capture card are all 1920x1080 60fps (I do virtual cycling classes). When I output to ZOOM should I keep my Output at 1920x1080 or change it to a different setting?
This dude is awesome!
Question about mic filters for you do I add filters on OBS if I have a GOXLR and set my audio up already? Will it cause any reverb or feedback?
Thank You. The recording of yourself is good but the screen recording is not. How to improve the screen recording? 12:30
Thank you for such great video.
Our pleasure!
How to set a timer to start and stop OBS recordings of your screen?
in the tools menu
I have 500mbps upload and download for 50€, should i be streaming at 300 000 kbps then?
Please zoom into the screen to make it easy for us to see.
3:00: so because 1 source exceeds canvas size, I should go over and size-up all other sources?
No, you set the canvas size to what screen ratio you're going for, most likely the monitor resolution you'll be recording most, then Ctrl+F new sources and optionally scaling them the way you see fit (if they escape bounds for example).
It's factual that canvas should be big for comfortable positioning of sources, just your 4k camera argument was wrong - 1 source doesn't dictate your entire canvas.
Using any downscale filter other than Lanchos is also a mistake. It's best with no real drawbacks.
Thank you
Do one prism live studio. One day
What if i have 681.81 Mbps in upload ???
how can i learn about Obs
The single best every OBS video tutorial ever made! Awesome! Thank you so much!
Waooo ! Thank you sooooo much for sharing all these informations !
I clicked on the link to schedule an one-on-one coaching to get help with my OBS syncing audio & video issues. The link is not working. Any other way i can contact you?
Youre a hero !! 😂
Cool thanks
Thank you for everything.
You are so welcome!
I missed the mustache Awall
it's perfect man
VERY GOOD !!! :-)
Increasing your audio bitrate will not increase your audio quality automatically. The platform has to support that bitrate. And it will NOT double the audio quality. It's not a linear function.
..but wait..... theres more (2 hours LATER) ....but wait...theres more hehehehehe 💜💙💛💚🧡💗
I disabled everything like you said and it's still doubling.. 🤔
Take a look at the sources that you have in your audio mixer and mute and hide the ones that you don’t want.
Wow! I'm fucking up pretty much everything on this list 🤣
affi win this
Mistakes presenters make: Saying, "but wait, there's more" all the time.
Hearing every single day every single second is a mistake made every single day
i knew all that and im a brand new streamer...the thing im having an issue with, is OBS crashing in the middle of my stream...there is no error report, but it does say there are 35 memory leaks, and i have no clue where they are or what they are...sometimes my stream will last for 5 hours, sometimes it wont last for 30 min
One byte = 8 bits. One Mb = 8000 kbits.
oops. now it won't record...
DO NOT USE SIMPLE! IT'S REALLY BAD!
Клоун в кепке что-то втерает, 15 веще которые не стоит делать, то что показанно в Видео, полная чушь!
Я не стал смотреть и вам советую, диз Одназначно!!!
Twitch partners nyt allowed To stream multiple sites
dnt ya hate when they say lets get straight to it and then still bla, bla, bla, who cares why just give d answer, They say no more jibba jabba , n da jibba, jabba dnt stop. ja,jaaa!! just f#%$^ with ya but ya know wut i mean....
You’re the freakin best!! Grateful 🥲
can you make a video for how to used nvidia broadcast 1.4 on gtx GPU for eye contact.
Hey it’s me again. Lol I’m guy that wants to promote healthy gaming. I’m wondering if I could get your feedback on something else know I’ve though of. I liberally wan to be ChromeSkull which is the name of m RUclips channel. There is a video on my channel where I talk about it. I really need your feedback. And your advice on what to do. Please help me out. I really feel passionate about what I want to do here.
