I wanted to express my gratitude for your outstanding video on OBS. I've watched numerous tutorials, but your explanation stands out. Your ability to simplify complex concepts makes it incredibly accessible, especially for a beginner like myself. After watching several videos, finding yours was a breath of fresh air. You truly have a remarkable talent for making things easy to understand.
1/18/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Joe, thank you for your work here. Your quiet, intelligent, concise way has helped me get some of what is going on. Again, thank you.
I’ve been with pinnacle for the last 25 years editing tv repair videos. I tried OBS last year but couldn’t get on with it. Your videos have helped. I think you may have sorted the timer issue. I have a special clock that my desktop grabs as a countdown before I go live. Seems ok. Thank you. I’m catching up slowly. Allen.
You are a gifted teacher internet stranger with the name Joe Milne. You have added something of value to my life. I was really struggling before watching your video. Thank you.
Brilliant Tutorial Joe. It's so hard these days to find tutorials on anything that are neither highly technical nor patronising. I've been slowly pushed down the road of delivering online workshops. OBS looked like the right product, less than an hour with you and not only do I know it is, but I feel like I can probably use it too. Thanks for taking the time!
Well done, Mr Milne. An English teacher with humility to say he doesn't know the intricacies of audio. I like that. This is a very well paced bit of tuition. Bravo!
I am just starting off with iTutor and I was feeling so overwhelmed until I started watching your stuff. Frankly speaking, you have saved my ass. Thank you so much for your work and breaking things down for the rest of us :)
Hi Joe, I just discovered your channel looking for OBS tutorials. The other commenters were right, inspite of the length of this video, I wasn't bored for a second, you are really good at explaining and keeping the audience's focus. Great job, thank you.
I watched every minute of this. Honestly, apart from the excellent content, I enjoyed listening to your calm and genuinely honest way of instruction. I give this 5💫💫💫💫💫
OBS is really very flexible and user-friendly! It has definitely made my classes more interactive and motivating. Thank you for creating this tutorial Teacher Joe!
HOLY MOLEY you made this so digestible. I am a forever subscriber! Your pace is perfect! Im just getting my channel going and this was by far the most helpful video I have seen. THANK YOU a million times over.
Thanks so much , Joe! I can see why you're a great instructor. I'm learning virtual tech as fast as I can. You really convey the info in an easy-to-use format. Virtually, Kelli V.
Joe, I saw your tutorial last night. It was so helpful because today I taught my first class of this semester with OBS!!!!! I used the chroma key, image and many things that you teach in your video. I need to learn how to share videos with audio. It's a way complicated yet, but I will learn. In the meantime I am sharing my videos on Microsoft Teams that is the official platform of our university. Thanks for existing!!!!!
Very good. I'm 62 and trying to keep up with all this software... I sing online and I'm trying to get the sound perfect lol. But thanks so much for not rushing through things. I could keep up ❤
Hi Joe, as I said, now I have a 2 year plan. I will have to figure out what the next step is and how to take advantage of the VPN on multiple computers at home. Hope they have a good tutorial. :) thx again bud
Thank you very much for that video. Absolutely brilliant explanation. Please make a video how to set up video recording or how we can be on the screen but the video behind us to keep moving. And how to choose a screen that we want to be on. THANK YOU
Hi Joe... went through a few OBS 'how tooooos' and found yours the very best... went through the whole thing on morning... phew! - Now I keep it for reffereance on my desktop. Very well done and once again... a great video :)
This is a fantastic tutorial. I watched another tutorial before watching this one, and this one was far more helpful. If you are new at OBS, this will be a great help to you. I highly recommend it.
Really enjoyed it and got a ton out of it! My only issue is audio monitoring. It has to do with playing a live video feed from VR, through my computer to be streamed out. When I go to a scene that only has a web camera and a mic, I mute the mic, and the meter shows no sound, which is what I want, BUT I hear sound through my headphones, so, it's coming from the computer. All I want to hear is what's coming through OBS.
My coworkers and I are so thankful for this. They have no interest in my ManyCam now! lol Thanks to your videos, I may get to take over production of my live show. Cheers, my friend!
Superb video Joe! You have a gift of clearly explaining complex functions, in a well organized way, in a very calm way! Couple of questions -1) sometimes you show the OBS screen and then very nicely zoom into the screen, to make it larger and improving visibility of OBS windows. How is this done? 2) You have great transitions from section to section. How is this done? Thanks so much!
Just my luck, while in the middle of rendering countdowns of different intervals, I thought I'd put your video on in the background, now I know I could have done it much more simpler! Great tutorial though, your students are very lucky.
Great video - super helpful. Have you done a bigger / more complete segment anywhere on using the OBS to record your screen? I get lost trying to do it!
Great, super-helpful video. When using a mirrorless camera (such as a Panasonic Lumix G7), with an HDMI-to-USB (for streaming)... the audio is always on time, and the video is late. What would be a recommended millisecond delay, in the audio settings? I do 250ms but sometimes I've noticed it gets out of sync. Is this a common thing with mirrorless cameras streaming via those HDMI-to-USB adapters? Thanks! Btw, subscribed. SUPERB tutorial, man. I'm sure all the others on your channel are as good as this one.
Sorry for the late response! I'm honestly not sure about connecting a camera to OBS as I don't do that. I'm sure other videos out there can help you though. Sorry!
Thank you for doing this. I went through the steps and got OBS up and running in no time. Fantastic tutorial @Joe Milne! I do have one question and hope you can help me sort this out: my video image from the c922 is seemingly sharp when i view it in the obs studio mode panel. However, the video image in Google Meet and in Zoom when activated there is soft. I've turned off the auto-feature in the c922 via the logitech software as well as in the video processor settings in OBS. Still, my image from OBS --> Gmeet or OBS--> Zoom is soft. How can I fix this?
I found your comment! Sorry for missing it. I responded to your email also: Hi Ninfa, Thanks for appreciating my video! Sorry that I missed your comment on my video. I'll answer your question here. I think that I have experienced the same thing, and it's to do with Zoom and other software's video decoding (or something like that). You might want to try changing your video settings in OBS and playing around with the resolution until you find something that fits. Try both 1080p and 720p for example and see if either one of those is better. To be totally honest with you, I don't use OBS as a virtual camera in Zoom unless absolutely necessary for this reason. Let me know if that helps, though! If not, I might have to look into this a bit further and get back to you. I don't mind doing that. Cheers, Joe Milne.
Joe Thank you for this extensive tutorial! Wow! You have really dedicated a lot of time to it and I appreciate that. I am a little apprehensive to use the camera because it seems very detailed. I work at tutorabc and was wondering; do you use it for your online teaching? Do you basically have many preset scenes that you use over and over? I ask because I don't know if I could concentrate on teaching while fiddling with the camera. I see a link for manycam listed also. Do you continue to use manycam for online teaching or are you using this OBS exclusively? I enjoy all of your tutorials that I have watched and they have helped me immensely! Thank you for your hard work!
Thanks a lot, Ed! Using OBS is a bit more manual than using ManyCam, so ManyCam might be a good bet for you if you're not into fiddling around too much. I use OBS when I teach and I have 3-4 presets I switch to, and I mainly use it for the green screen effect, although it's also great to drag and drop images/gifs in there when explaining vocabulary. 😊 Hope it helps!
Thanks for referring me from your SHAREX video to OBS based on the needs described in my comment on the SHAREX tutorial video. I'm about to watch this now......thanks again
Excellent tutorial! I have two questions: I am a retired teacher and want to continue teaching via streaming or RUclips. I’m quite computer savvy, at least in the Mac world although I’m new to streaming technology. I’m learning to use OBS and Zoom. 1. Why is it preferable to use Studio View? Advantages? 2. Under what circumstances would I be likely to use OBS as a virtual camera? FYI, I’m presently using my iPhone 13 pro max as a virtual camera as I don’t own a webcam. Your presentation on OBS is extremely thorough and easy to follow. Thank you!
Thank you. Your is the best video about recording instruction with OBS. Question, you hit start recording. When you hit stop recording, where does your recorder go? there is no save. How do you preview your recording video you did? No one showed what to do after you hit stop recording. thanks
After you hit stop recording, it should go to your "Videos" folder on your PC. If you go to Settings > Recording in OBS, you should find an option which shows you where your videos save, something like "path settings".
Thanks for saying that. You could click View Mode in the PPT and click Read Mode, then make sure OBS is capturing that. Just his the arrow keys to switch slides.
Definitely outstanding. I am relatively new to OBS and your tutorial brought me up to level much quicker than many I've seen. Great job...highly recommended.
Thanks Joe, that was a fantastic bit of content. I am in the process of getting a handle on this great program. So I can teach my daughter who has just began to do Speech pathology sessions over Zoom. This would improve her sessions 100%. Excellent class for those new to this OBS world. Regards From a land down under 👍🏻🍷❤️🇦🇺
What a brilliant peice of software. Scenes can be studio cameras. You just flip to whichever camera. I understand it can do teleprompting (autocues) as well. Have you made a video on this? 🙂
Thank you for creating such an informative tutorial video on OBS Studio! Your guidance and insights were incredibly valuable. I have a question regarding making a video from the desktop where not all windows are open. Could you please provide guidance on how to achieve this?
Wow brilliant tutorial Joe. Following along here. I'm typing this just as your covering the green screen. Hopefully we will cover sharing an application later on. Thanks so much :)
Wow, this was a great training session thx. I am brand new to OBS and this helped me a great deal. I create online content and I am excited to try a whole lot of things now. Thank you
You are an awesome tutor OMG, I'm new to OBS I have it in my laptop I didn't know what to do... I want to learn so I can be comfortable. I just downloaded lower third for OBS I went into text than browse I'm seeing my download but only to see my timer.
You're an excellent presentor. Your pace is perfect. I'd love to see you explain the differences between streamlabs obs and obs studio. I'd also love to view a "how to use obs with webex for live streaming. Zoom "how to" videos are easy to find on youtube but not webex training with obs. I'm new to all this and appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks again.
Hi Joe, you are the greatest instructor I ever seen, I watched the whole video, even though I needed only 25% of what I learned. 1 question, how can we record only 1/2 or a portion of the screen?
Love the video. It was very helpful. I would love see a video on how do you get your screen the way you have it. You are positioned in the lefthand corner and your screen can be seen very easily and clearly.
Great video, Joe. Can you please make a video on how to record a part of a browser window. I am trying to record a video in the browser window, but I can’t seem to record only the video. I keep capturing areas outside the video window in the browser. Also, it would be great to see a tutorial video geared specifically towards creating a tutorial video. Keep up the great work.
One amazing video....OBS is certainly a great tool for what I have been planning for a long time ie. Online teaching. Stumbled on this amazing tut whilst looking for a simple video cutter. Pardon me for my ignorance: I was unable to find the links you suggested in the video description. I instead searched for the Virtual Cam , downloaded and I think installed but I was unable to find under TOOLS. Your teaching style is super and any dummy will understand your content. Well done.
I wonder if you could do a demo of a live teaching session for say 5-10 minutes to show us how you actually switch between the scenes in OBS whilst teaching in zoom. That’s the bit I am still confused over. But I also wanted to say what a wonderful video and how lucky your kids are to have you - amazing teacher!
Hi Joe this video is really exceptionally helpful to setup OBS. After a first shot to the application I thought it will not fit for me, but with your explanations there is a chance for using it for my planned genealogy tutorials. However after some tests it looks like that I would need two monitors, one where I record from and the other to place OBS allowing to change settings e.g. swithching scenes or is there an option to assign short cuts to a scene name in order to switch between sceenes during the recording when OBS is minimized?
Happy to help! Yes, keyboard shortcuts are a thing! Maybe a video on that would help... but you can just Google them and take a look at which ones are available.
Thanks, it was a very informative video. I had used obs many yrs back and you have refreshed my memory fully. Ill check out your other videos and see whats cool. Thanks again
Good Job!, Good Job!! - A very very good complete OBS tutorial - that I have had the opportunity to come across on YT, But Joe! - wait for what i am going to say next, l honestly like and very much appreciate "Your very Easy Relaxed Calm interesting method of teaching"👍👍👍👍👍 - this also includes letting someone to see where you are placing or moving the Cursor (Very Good and excellent illustration method) - which Some YYTs may do. but sometimes really too fast - l am very very impressed with your method - Good job!!Joe.. Futhermore, you are among one of the best, if not "THE BEST YTT"👍👍👍👍👍I have KNOWN so far - thank you very very much for taking so, so much time putting together this Complete OBS Tutorial - its very highly appreciated. Wishing you a very, very nice day, Ones again - thanks.
Joe, thanks for this tutorial. I have learned a lot about OBS Studio now. However, I still have another question regarding the other gear that you record OBS screen. Do you have another camera that is recording you while teaching this software which records you and your computer screen?
Great video fantastic for a newbie to OBS like me. On another note I would like to know what app the international time clock on your desktop is... Cheers... Thank you
Hey, this tutorial is straightforward to understand and so clearly explained. I have a question when I set up my video capture device it does not show the resolution option for 1920x1080, is it because I am using my built-in laptop camera? looking forward to your response. thank you!
I watched both of your videos on obs -very helpful -thank you! Real super basic questions-do the scenes get saved anywhere? Like a “project” save in some programs. How do you save your work for future reference? I have tried to use the virtual camera aspect but I’m having a hell of a time with the green screen. The minute i access it say in zoom, the green screen looks terrible. I’ve spent days trying to figure out a clean green screen with good lighting, etc. just isn’t working can’t get it to look as clean as you guys and don’t know what the problem is... any suggestions? And thank you so much for all!!!
Thanks! The scenes stay as they are until you change them. Even after you restart your computer. 😊 I don't think you can save/export them. Sorry you're having trouble with the green screen, it sounds like it might be due to a low-quality camera you're using. If it's an internal camera, it won't work as well. External cameras are the way to go. Hope it helps!
Forgot to ask: When I go to the Video settings I cannot change any of the settings on the page - all are not active. How do I do that? I want the output to be mp4
Hey Nick, I'm glad you like the video. You don't have to use the VirtualCam on Zoom. Just close OBS and select your main camera as your camera by clicking the dropdown arrow near the camera symbol. You should click "advanced" when going to video settings, and make sure you're not recording and that the VirtualCam is disabled.
I did like this very much. Only tutorial I have yet found that explains and illustrates what a scene is for and gives examples. The time lapse section was the weakest, although I think I got the point. Not sure of the utility of the countdown or it’s function - do you start streaming a half hour early and then start by switching scene to the next? Will try that myself. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the tutorial! is it possible to use two cameras at once, one for your facial expression and the other for displaying whatever is on your working desk? e.g unboxing something or doing some math.
Hi Joe, This is an extraordinary video for beginners. U R a real teacher. Thanks. Would you please make a Video for the Screen recording with Mouseover highlighted?☺😎
I just did a video on free overlays for OBS, it's a game-changer. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/-bdklcV_zNo/видео.htmlsi=jW4txSZ8d4mu0swR

Definitely outstanding. I am relatively new to OBS and your tutorial brought me up to level much quicker than many I've seen. Great job...highly recommended.
Thanks a lot, buddy!
Thanks Joe, that was a fantastic bit of content. I am in the process of getting a handle on this great program. So I can teach my daughter who has just began to do Speech pathology sessions over Zoom. This would improve her sessions 100%. Excellent class for those new to this OBS world.
Regards From a land down under 👍🏻🍷❤️🇦🇺
So glad to hear it, Bruce. Thanks so much for the comment! 👍
Thank you very much for these golden skills. Someone can literally start a live streaming business after watching this tutorial. Million of Thanks...
Hey, thanks a lot! Glad it helped!
thank you joe. you are the man. as an educator, i find this video really comes in handy. cheers. from Malaysia 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
Thanks a lot, Muhammad!
Wow, you are the best!. You brought all the pieces together. I vote for Joe Milne! Thank you so much!
Thanks a lot, Michele!
Very clear and understandable explanation. Many thanks.
Thanks a lot!
What a brilliant peice of software. Scenes can be studio cameras. You just flip to whichever camera.
I understand it can do teleprompting (autocues) as well. Have you made a video on this? 🙂
Cheers! I haven't used it for teleprompting yet, sadly.
Thank you for creating such an informative tutorial video on OBS Studio! Your guidance and insights were incredibly valuable. I have a question regarding making a video from the desktop where not all windows are open. Could you please provide guidance on how to achieve this?
Glad it was helpful! I think you need to open all the windows.
Wow brilliant tutorial Joe. Following along here. I'm typing this just as your covering the green screen. Hopefully we will cover sharing an application later on. Thanks so much :)
Thanks a lot!!
Excellent! The time-lapse was interesting to watch but, it would be nice to see how you did it.
Wow, this was a great training session thx. I am brand new to OBS and this helped me a great deal. I create online content and I am excited to try a whole lot of things now. Thank you
Thanks so much, Ursula! 😊
You are an awesome tutor OMG, I'm new to OBS I have it in my laptop I didn't know what to do... I want to learn so I can be comfortable. I just downloaded lower third for OBS I went into text than browse I'm seeing my download but only to see my timer.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot, Christine! I'm not familiar with WebEx so this might be of of scope for me. Sorry about that!
Hi Joe, you are the greatest instructor I ever seen, I watched the whole video, even though I needed only 25% of what I learned. 1 question, how can we record only 1/2 or a portion of the screen?
Thanks. You can hold alt and drag the corners to crop.
This is a great tutorial, and a very clever micro studio build.
you are the best instructor, with your instruction i feel fulfilled
Wow. Best software training youtube video I've ever watched, hands down. Thank you.
Thanks so much!!
Best video on OBS I have come across so far. Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Well done.
Virtual cam is now an integrated function! No install necessary!
Great Tutorial but i wish if you talked about the video settings in more details special the downscale filter and the canvas resolution
Sorry about missing that stuff out.
Thanks a lot! Maybe I'll do one in future.
Excellent tutorial..... doesn't quite give you the props you deserve brilliant, cleared up a lot of things i needed /wanted to know about OBS
Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this video, there really isn't a lot of content on OBS out there for teachers. Keep up the great work!
Cheers!
Thank you for this tutorial, this is what I needed. This is very detailed and you are not rushing through so I can appreciate that.
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic. First time I opened OBS and I am feeling like a pro (exhaggerating obviously lol) Thanks buddy
Boom! You got this!
Thank you so much!
Joe, thanks for this tutorial. I have learned a lot about OBS Studio now. However, I still have another question regarding the other gear that you record OBS screen. Do you have another camera that is recording you while teaching this software which records you and your computer screen?
Yes! I had my Sony a6400 set up recording me too (against a green screen).
Thank you for putting out such a thorough video for an obs novice like myself!
Thank you for watching!
Great video fantastic for a newbie to OBS like me. On another note I would like to know what app the international time clock on your desktop is... Cheers... Thank you
Thanks a lot! The app is Qlock!
Great tutorial Joe, I've watched and set up my OBS on a P but video from my external sony camera feed has a lag in time.
I'm not too sure how to fix that. Hmm.
Hey, this tutorial is straightforward to understand and so clearly explained. I have a question when I set up my video capture device it does not show the resolution option for 1920x1080, is it because I am using my built-in laptop camera? looking forward to your response. thank you!
It probably is because of that, yes.
HI Joe, wonderful videos. I was wondering if you have a video of how to capture the cursor.
I have OBS 20.0.2 and all I have done doesn't worked.
I use something called "Pointer Focus".
Joe Milne thank you!!! Yes okay all good to know.and thank you again for all your help! It’s much appreciated!!!
Thank you Joe, trying to apply step by step the things I have learn from you. Thank you
Thanks!
This is so easy to follow - I love it. I installed the Virtual Camera but don't want to use it on Zoom - is there a way of turning it off?
Forgot to ask: When I go to the Video settings I cannot change any of the settings on the page - all are not active. How do I do that? I want the output to be mp4
Hey Nick, I'm glad you like the video. You don't have to use the VirtualCam on Zoom. Just close OBS and select your main camera as your camera by clicking the dropdown arrow near the camera symbol.
You should click "advanced" when going to video settings, and make sure you're not recording and that the VirtualCam is disabled.
So happy to see your amazing work take off. ❤️ I am saving this video for future reference.
Thanks so much, Nikki!! 💜🙏
Brilliant tutroial, best I have seen in a long time. Got me started . Thank you, top class
Thanks so much!
Thank you.
Thanks!
Very good tutorial. Thanks. I will be using OBS with the ATEM Pro switcher
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the tutorial! is it possible to use two cameras at once, one for your facial expression and the other for displaying whatever is on your working desk? e.g unboxing something or doing some math.
Sorry for the late response! I think it's possible, yeah!
Hi Joe, This is an extraordinary video for beginners. U R a real teacher. Thanks. Would you please make a Video for the Screen recording with Mouseover highlighted?☺😎
Thanks a lot!
