No previous experience with auto/engine repair. Friend's beetle blew out the thermostat drain. I had no clue how to get to that lower screw. thanks very much. this video was EXACTLY what I needed. I felt accomplishment and saved my friend $$$$!! Thanks very much
Thanks so much for this awesome video! I have a Bentley manual, but this video was way more valuable with the suggestions for how to get at the lower bolt, which was super easy with a couple of wobble extensions with the wire off the back of the alternator. My kids and I will now once again have heat in the car in a cold Montana winter!
Thanks. Always good to see what you can expect before you start the job!
Thanks for the vid. Need to do this repair this afternoon, and you made my life easier.
You are the best man. Watched a boatload of videos on far fixing and YOURS are THE BEST! THANX!
Very clear and concise and well lit tutorial. You should be commended.
Wicked video! Thanks for taking the time to upload this!
Thanks Rich You explain things very well. Thank You.
Nice job and thank you for the detailed work , excellent.
Thanks so much! This was perfect. Made changing mine out a breeze.
2003 2.0L Jetta GL
Extremely helpful. Thanks!!!!
Thank you very much for this video!
Very good video. Looks like I will be doing this before winter sets in.
I appreciate your video I've learned so much
Thanks for the videos they are a huge help post more!
Great video, very well done, Thanks!!
Love watching your video's, always so informative!!!!

thank you man you just save me some money...
When it gets hot are both top and bottom radiator hoes the same temperature.
nice video, thank you!
do you know if it would be the same on a 2002 jetta gl? i just had to replace the altonator and now its over heating. i just cant find any videos on an 02. Thanks much!!
Thanks. So simpme. This will save me $200
hi rich thanks for the video very informative, but i have a questio when your not a mechanic and havent worked on many cars do you think this is like easy moderate or hard for someone?
Excellent Video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video.
thanks so much!
Rich, do you have a video on replacing the water pump on a 2001 jetta 2.0?
So what were the symptoms? Stuck open or closed? Great Vid. Thank You!
Thank u so much for sharing
Do you think a similar setup but a 3/8 size would fit getting that bottom bolt off
Excellent
Hey guys thanks for the video! Just changed mine in 10degree weather so the wife could have heat. Your video made my nightmare not so bad. Hey why drain radiator?
A lot of times i just pull the part and let it drain from there.
What thermostat and coolant should I used for optimum performance?
Very well done video. Made it real easy, got it done in about 30 minutes. Thank you!
Also, for anyone out there as well, if changing the thermostat does not fix the overheating problem what other suggestions do you have? AND
Does the time of coolant really matter when flushing the radiator?
I have a 05 vw golf 2.0
With the thermostat removed it is an excellent time to check for a cracked or broken impeller on the water pump which the 2.0L is prone to do.
Thanks! The thermostat seemed to do it. Apreciate the video.
***** Yes you can see it through the thermostat housing.
muy bueno, ojala me dijeran dnd tiene el tornillo de llenado p/una transmision automatica Beatles 2.0
Rich, i have the same problem on my 98 jetta, the hoses have the same temp, but the radiator still cool......what else could be?
Did u replace the radiator on this car as well?
It depends were the coolant is leaking from.
I have a 1997 vw jetta gt and have replaced the water pump, thermostat sensors and radiator, but it stills over heats the radiator doesn't get hot it and the fans don't turn on. I tested them and they work. what do you think it could be the problem?
So the drain valve to drain the fluid, it's located on the driver's side on the bottom?
thanks!!!
do you know if this would be the same for a 2003 VW Jetta?
hi, i have two questions. is it really nessasary to drill a small hole on the top of the new thermostat (to bleed air out)? is it true that you can feel the impeller of your water pump with you fingers, when you have the thermostat out?
did you replace the gasket for the thermostat?
I'm gonna replace the thermostat on my beetle, but I'm not going to put the thermostat I'm just going to put the housing back on with out the thermostat, but do I need the gasket ring?
Overheating, coolant not circulating. On the 2.0L you must look at the plastic water pump impeller which is a big problem.
richpin06a plastic when overheating ruins each part sometimes ouch
The later ones with the 2.0L had plastic impellers on the water pumps which came apart resulting in engine overheating.
i replaced the thermostat and it is now leaking out antifreeze.. i no that my water pump was apparently going because a mechanic said the funny sound when i start my car is a pump, but do u think my thermostat is just put in wrong?
Thks BROTTTTTTHHHHHH
My thermostat has 2 hoses come out if it instead of the single this this vid. It’s an 05 Jetta 2.0l, is it stil the same process?
Yes i put a new o-ring gasket in.
Thanks!
Thank you Mark.
So, how can I check the impeller? Its there a noise? Whater leak? I thougth that may be the thermostat...
Is this the only reason for the rediator be cold while the hoses are hot?
how about bleeding the system? thanks Hugo Melchor USN RET
Is 190 faran the Oem temperature rating on the thermostat?
Thanks. Very nice video. Question for richpin06a or anyone else. I have seen kits that have 2 o-rings (inner and outer). I only noticed one o-ring (outer) going in here. I know some people actually drill holes in thermostats so the inner o-ring probably doesn't do much, but is it needed to have the right spacing and get a good seal between the water outlet/thermostat housing and the engine block.
Hey Bret...drilling the small hole is great on older engines, so I did it on my VW 2.0. Now I get to RE-DO the thermostat job, it throws an error code! Don't drill the small hole in VW thermostats!! No idea on the 2 o-rings...seems useless.
Why does everyone remove the nut at 0:39? The cover just slides out of the retaining grommet. Hmm
Now someone finally tells me.
Good to know. ;) Thx
Who has a 10mm anyway??
Sorry I have replaced so many cracked "tubes" on Volkwagens and Audi's. The material they make the inlet and outlet hoses are crap. I cringed when you where pulling off that upper radiator hose watching the plastic bend and creek. Anyway I love all your videos. Keep up the good work
What about under heating. We have had a few days of around 0 degree weather windchill below. My car will start and run, (takes a second when the wind has been blowing on it all day) but in my 30 min drive to work (mostly highway) my heater never seems to warm up all the way. the temp gauge will sometimes will not even get off the three lowest lines. I get some heat but not enough to really feel it (i don't see my breath after a little bit) not getting any funny smells, I just did a coolant flush in the fall (used proper vw coolant and distilled water) a previous owner removed the bottom splash guards.
Could it be the thermostat is going bad, or is too much air getting into the engine bay. How do I test to see if my thermostat is going bad?
30 degree weather it seems to do fine (not warm enough to run you out but comfortable). In the summer warm air comes out of the vents but I have not messed with the AC unit yet.
VW golf 2000 mk4 2.0
Definitely the thermostat.
Jetta thermostat fails open so it has less potential to cause catastrophic damage
Is this the same for my 95 jetta
Where do you get the adapter hose ?
My 96 Golf is overheating. Just replaced the thermostat. Lower radiator hose and radiator don't heat up. Heat seems to radiate from large hose on right side of engine. Running engine I see no water pumped out of top radiator hose or any hoses to overflow ball. Sound like I need a water pump? The blades felt OK through the thermostat hole.
My 2000 Golf 2.0 started overheating a few days ago. I went with the cheapest option first by replacing the thermostat. Now it leaks from the connections where the plastic hose meets the engine. Could the o ring be backwards or not sitting properly?
Most of these 2.0L engines that are overheating are because of a broken impeller on the water pump which you can see when the thermostat is out.
smtimes the housing is collapsed try making a flange out of flange papper and add some silicone too
what is that pipe to the right of the water outlet? how do u change that?
Coolant return or bypass pipe from the heater core. It wraps around the side of the engine. You'll have to remove the ignition coil and secondary air pump (if your engine has it) along with anything else that is in the way.
Do u know where the bleeder valve is located? Did u have to bleed the air out when you were dodne?
I think it's a self bleeding system. Notice the reservoir is higher than the rest of the system.
If you have a 2.0L and it is overheating it would be wise to check the water pump for impeller failure.
Great video. 2011 jetta sportwagen diagnosed with faulty thermostat - temp gets halfway between normal and overheating. Question: is the procedure in general the same as n this video for my car?
Video possible to change Termstadt 1.6
Hi rich, thanks for the great video. But i would like some input on a situation i am having with my cooling system. its a 2004 Jetta with a 2.0 engine. while driving it started overheating i checked the code and it showed a P0117 code. I changed the coolant sensor with a new sensor (green) and hoped everything will be normal. Started the car and the temperature gauge went up again and this time it threw a P3081 code. I made sure i had a working new thermostat by throwing it in a pot of boiling water and installed it in the car. same situation still persist. When i took out the thermostat i flashed some light where the water pump is and its still intact. i dont see any shredded or broken impeller. could you think of something that could use this problem?
Appreciate it in advance
I have seen the plastic impeller look ok but actually it was loose and spinning on the water pump shaft.
Woudnt u want the water pump to be spinning on the shaft?
I did try spinning it by hand and it does spin a lil. Very little
The impeller's knurling can strip and free wheel.
How did you know that the thermostat was the culprit for the overheating?
I'm not sure if it's the coolant temp sensor, or the thermostat that needs replacing..
I saw on another video if the upper radiator hose gets hot, then it's possibly not the water pump(I'm hoping it's not)
I'm just noticing more and more every day that I drive my Vdub that the temp keeps going up more and more past the upright middle marker on the temp gauge.
If you have this 2.0L engine and you are over heating the first place to look is the water pump because they use a plastic impeller which cracks and falls apart.
Remove thermostat. Insert gloved finger into thermostat mounting hole . try to turn impeller with gloved finger. If impeller moves freely it has failed.
Hi, I had the heater core replaced my 2000 Jetta 2.0 about 10 days ago. The other day on my way the work (the temperature outside was about 17 degrees), my car overheated. Once the tow truck brought my car back, my husband checked the fluid levels & all was okay. He drove it around & had no issues. The next day I drove it to work (the temp outside was about 27 degrees) & I made it all the way to work without it overheating but the temperature did go over 190 degrees. I drove it during lunch when it was warmer and made it home without any issues. I had no issues yesterday. However, today my car overheated again (it was about 16 degrees outside this morning). I pulled off the side of the road and this time fluid was flowing out of my car. I let it cool down, added more antifreeze and drove back home. My husband told me that the fans weren't running while the car was running. He wants to know if the thermostat needs to be replaced. Also, the first morning my car overheated, I noticed a clicking sound from under the dash. I noticed that for a couple of days and but not today or the day before. Could that be from a bad module? Thanks for any info you can provide.
We are now home and my husband has added more antifreeze and has ran the car for about 15 minutes. All the hoses are warm to the touch but not the bottom radiator hose. There is now heat in the car (I forgot to mention the lack of heat earlier) and the temperature gauge is steady at 190. However, the radiator fans have not turned on yet.
The most common problem on these 2.0L engines when there is a overheating issues is the plastic impeller breaks apart on the water pump. With the thermostat removed the impeller can be inspected.
The belt is ribbed on both sides so it is very different.
Will this stop ac??? If car become ovet heat
Nice video, but this procedure is a little different on a 1.8 turbo. You can see it on my channel
No it is different coolant vw came up with.
#Good
I am not getting ay hot air coming out from my car heater air . do you thing its related to the thermostat ?
Is the car overheating and what is the temp of the top and bottom radiator hoses like at normal temperature.
the car is not over heating .the hoses were hot both and, I found a cracking on the housing cap . that is leaking .
G12 is pink or in some cases violet. but Dex-cool can be used but you will lose the lifetime protection of the coolant to 5 years. according to the Zerex chart.
I do not at the present time.
It could be the water pump because that seems to be a big problem on these cars.
oh also a little tip. while you have the Thermostat out. if you look inside( to the left) with a flash light. you can see the plastic water pump impeller. make sure its in good shape.
briansmobile1 shows it in How to diagnose Beetle overheating.
What size are the thermostat housing bolts? Thanks!
Simcat I wish i could remember the size.....if i was to take a guess i would say 10mm.
richpin06a I think they are 14mm
richpin06a Good job getting in that tight space! Have you ever replaced the cooling hose connector at the firewall. Looks simple enough but can't find any guides on the job.
Simon C I have not as yet replaced that hose.
Andre Romero I ended up replacing it. I think I had to get an elbow piece to get socket in there. I can't recall the tutorial. maybe I used several different tutorials?
There is way to much plastic on these modern cars makes working on them like steeping through a mine field.
There's no gasket that goes in between the hose and block?
O ring you see
No, just the O-Ring but feel free to use a light layer of RTV on the outermost flange of the housing.
That serp belt is worn out pretty good. Anyway I have replaced so many cracked plastic "tubes" k
Almost looks like it might be worth the time to remove the alternator entirely no?
Would you believe a Samung TL105 with a tripod.
OEM Thermostat and G12 or ++ variants on any 93+ VW regardless of engine.
Hmmm . . . My wife's 2001 Jetta is almost at 180k, and the only thing that's failed, other than a bunch of sensors, was the water pump. Well, I need to replace the outer flange and thermostat now, and the CV boot is torn, but the way it's driving we're looking to get 300k out of it. If it doesn't rust to pieces first, that is
its similar to Dex-cool but not quite. EG Pentosin SF (VW G12).
You said the book time was 2.8h to change not trying to brag but I had mine changed in 1h 45m. That's changed and running.
korean cars are even simpler to repair just like Japanese cars. then when you need coolant just use any brand of Japanese coolant available.(Honda,Toyota,Nissan,Subaru,Zerex Asian vehicle, etc.) plenty of parts too since most Korean cars share parts with Mitsubishi.
nice friendly user german engineering...
No i did not.
No they didn't bother to put one in.
If you work flat rate on a shop. thats what they charge it does not matter if you do it in 5 minutes or 3 days. u get paid . 2,8 hours.
You can remove your alternator for more easy job.
By that book huh
MY THERMOSTAT HAS A TINY BLEED HOLE IN IT ,ON MY NEW BEETLE 1.8T
I DID NOT SEE THE THE POSITION OF THE BLEED HOLE RELATIVE TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE IN WHATEVER CORRECT POSITION IT SUPPOSED TO BE IN .....THE BLEED HOLE SHOULD EITHER BE TOWARD THE TOP OR TOWARD THE THE BOTTOM OF THE THERMOSTAT .....ANYBODY HERE HAVE THE ANSWER ?
