- Monster Variations make up a huge portion of the Monster Hunter roster, but how well are they implemented and do they add to the Monster Hunter experience? Let's talk about it.

Rare species are by definition a sub-species, just rare, and deviants are by definition variants, just as the result of a hunter specifically. And Espinas’ rare species could still come later
Definitely bloodbath is hunter related, and there may be one or two more, but not all deviants are hunter related. You are right about rare species being subspecies, and deviants being mega variants.
@@0kadou0 only Yian garuga and bloodbath are hunter related iirc. Deviants are just individual variants, like how any rajang can become furious upon losing their tail but not all diablos become bloodbath when loosing a horn.
@@paztah2194 Not strictly for deadeye, its just a smaller garuga that had fought countless battles, strengthening it to the point of being uncontested, some fights may have involved hunters, only bloodbath was created out of hunter interference
@@paztah2194 isn't soulseer also hunter related?
@@kbrxion5620 it was blinded, but it wasn’t stated how, if I remember right.
There's a ton of Monsters and they usually mess up with the concept of "WTH ARE YOU? SUB, VARIANT, DEVIANT?!"
As an example, Shah Dalamadur is a Dalamadur who just recently shed up it's skin, so he's a Variant of a Dalamadur, but he's classified as Subspecies, same for Black Diablos, she was supposed to be a Variant just by concept, but she's a subspecies
Basically;
Normal Species: Monsters, that's It
Subspecies: Monsters that Changed and adapted to other biomes and conditions, and while some of them just have Different colors, they usually can adapt and use a whole Different Element, like Agnaktor and Glacial Agnaktor
Rare Species: There's just a few rare Species, but that's because They're rare individuals of a Monsters that can be encountered in very specific locales, like the Tower, they usually maintain the things that define their normal version with some addition that Made then pretty Different
Variants: Specific individuals from the normal Species, but something happened and Made them mutate and change, Variants always have the same Element of the normal version, but increased to a whole other Level
Scarred Garuga, a Garuga who survived against hunters and got all those scars
Raging Brachydios; A Brachydios which survived the symbiotic relationship with the Flashpoint Slime, acquiring even More volatile Slime, being bigger and a bit Slower than a normal Brachydios
Furious Rajang, a Rajang who lost His Tail, leaving him always enraged and on His Golden fur State, but becoming even stronger and capable or Using a whole new Level of Power... A super simia-
MOVE ON-
Deviants; They're just Variants
Then why the Different name?
Basically due to Generations' Deviant System, or as they called in Japan; "Two-Name Monsters.", While Deviants feel different from Variants, They're Basically the same as a Variant, and This Is More evident with Monsters like Crimson Glow Valstrax which Is Basically a Deviant Monster in every sense, they even gave him the "Two-Name." Thing
Hell-Blade
Soul-Seer
Elder-Frost
Crimson-Glow
But they Made It like This due to: In Japanese Subspecies doesn't have specific names
In Japanese, Subspecies are called just Subspecies (Ashū)
Lioleus Ashu is Rathalos Subspecies, aka Azure Rathalos
And Rare Species are called Kishoshū
Lioleus Kishoshū Is a Rathalos Rare Species, aka Silver Rathalos
With this they don't have two Rathalos Subspecies, or two Lioleus Ashū in Japan, where they don't have specific names
And just like Variants, Deviants has specific names unlike Subspecies in Japan
Tengen Mizutsune - Soulseer Mizutsune
Shi o Matou Varuhazaku - Blackveil Vaal Hazak
Shirohayate Narugakuruga - Silverwind Nargacuga
Ensadoyomeku Magaimagado - Scorned Magnamalo
Even with Variants and Deviants being Different categories, they can easily being considered Variants by concept
And I still feel bad for Apex Monsters:(
The idea wasn't even bad, they were Monsters that survived Ibushi's Storm and became stronger, but the fact that they were recolored Deviants without Armor ruined the idea for me.
The Apex monsters of rise are just weaker versions of the Deviants but also look less cool.
But they atleast have the better theme song.
I like to think that deviants are just rare species but for variants (basically just even rarer and stronger variants)
If only Apexes gets their own weapons other than Rampage, or at the very least their own armors
I really hope they add Molten to sunbreak, It would be nice to get as many rare’s as possible.
we already have to many fire and blast variants its a bit boring
He is extremely likely for TU2 and most people seem to want him since he's a fan favorite so it's definitely leaning to hi being added
@@Detroph Molten weapons are not known for their blast qualities but for their high Raw DMG and white sharpness with two slots for decos and 20% affinitty, it would be something similar to Silverlos and Goldian weapons but with a small Blast bonus.
I'd be down to hearing what you think of Frontier's variations. Zenith species are basically more extreme Deviants with focus on monsters having over developed body parts that players need to prioritize breaking since they take a lot of abuse before they break. For example Zenith Rathalos's Zenith part are his huge wings and Espinas's is his massive horn.
They also make use of Extreme Blights that, without the right protection, can devastate hunters quickly. They also have far stronger roars, tremors, and wind pressure so much so that Zenith wind pressure can send Hunters flying across the area without protection or i-framing.
One last thing about Zeniths is that they have 3 battle themes associated with their escalating quests and they all slap.
Monsters so strong that their roars and tremors got their own tier higher from the rest that named after them
Honestly it does all come down to sub and variants. Rare is just rarer sub species. Special species from Explore could easily be recategorizes as subspecies’s or rare, which is what is likely to happen with Mitzu in the next title update.
Even zenith and origin species could be reclassified for main line if they wanted too (and should).
Origin Species are unique enough to be their own thing. They’re living fossils of creatures that other monsters descended from; they’re the coelacanth/dinosaurs and such of the monster hunter world.
Love the video!
I think it's hard to call the Apex monsters in Rise bad because of the whole lockdown situation putting a lot of businesses in a spiral, and also Rise being made by the Portable team. They had to make an endgame, everyone was at home, work was getting weird, may as well borrow the animations and moves and ideas from the deviants to get something across the line.
Hunting Apex Rath for the Crit Boost deco did give me Flameking PTSD so I might be biased
As a fellow appreciator of Hellblade Glavenus, the warmth with which you speak of him makes me indescribably happy.
🤨
I'd be super down with deviants again if they actually include the armor from Generations you can get from fighting them. They had very specific and set skill sets when combined, but at least for the ones that weren't as good they did look amazing. I remember not too long ago going back to XX to fight Redhelm for the first time and it was surprisingly challenging despite myself having written it off as a low level test to introduce the concept since you can fight it extremely early on. The claws would actually start to home in on you and be stringed together more. His ground speed while doing so actually made it almost necessary to save an evade skill or time your superman correctly so your i-frames would last on the final swings. But the female armor looked like this cool punk attire that was a big shift from the more cutesy and iconic regular Arzuros set with the hat - it was an even a decent starter kit for bow which I was trying to wrap my head around since this is pre-world bow.
I'm really conflicted with variations.
For one, I like the idea of monsters mutating into a different kind by adapting to a new environment; on the other hand, I cannot help but look at them as a lazy work from Capcom to add a new monster by copying-pasting any monster, adding a new color, some new moves and call it a day, instead of adding a *real new* monster to the roster.
The MHW:I subspecies are basically new monsters with how they change up the fight.
Nit it makes sense lore wise since
These are animals were talking about..
I already know about the Frontier variations but id still like you to cover them :)
By the way, Lore-Wise and Gameplay-Wise, it is technically possible to have, in the next MH games, a Gold Dreadqueen Rathian, a Silver Dreadking Rathalos, a Lucent Silverwind Nargacuga, a Stygian Thunderlord Zinogre, a Magma Grimclaw Tigrex or even a Black Bloodbath Diablos (Just typing these names hurt my soul ಥ﹏ಥ )
I specially loved the yian garuga deviant, a easy monster that through his intellect an ability managed to become a real threat, with scars of previous battles in their body, you could feel why they managed to live so long
I'd really like to see a video on the Frontier and Online variations! I already know a bit about the Frontier ones, but it seems like Online is less covered.
Espinas Rare Species can still come, maybe just later down the line.
Subspecies are genetically different from their base form while variants aren’t, they had something in their life make them like Rajang losing its tail. Rare species are subspecies but well, rare.
nothing tops the greatness that's the Coral Pukei Pukei. Truly the pinnacle of monster design
Love the video!
It may be because I'm a 5th gen hunter, but I never had a problem with the Rise iteration of Apex monsters. I honestly thought they all looked pretty cool and their reason for existing was at somewhat believable, no less than the story behind Tempered or Frenzied monsters.
I guess my big thing is that this isn't a new thing. Frenzy-style Apexes, Hypers, and Tempered monsters imo were basically the same across the board with a tiny bit of different flavor. No one complains about that. Afflicted monsters, while neat, are essentially the same as well if you ignore the Quirio burst mechanic. But like the others, (aside from the bloated HP pool) no one complains about them. So I don't understand why the Deviants being touched was such a sin in everyone's eyes
And personally, I think they did the job BETTER in some ways. I went and personally fought those 6 Deviants and honestly Apex Mizutsune was the only one that felt like a slight downgrade from Soulseer purely due to mechanics. All the others have slightly more advanced combos, a couple new moves, and even full blown ultimates that didn't exist. Hell, Apex Diablos & Zinogre imo were WORLDS harder than Bloodbath & Thunder Lord EVER were imo
Hell, even Master Rank AFFLICTED Diablos & Zinogre feel dumbed down compared to those two
Yes them not having unique armor kinda sucked, but if that's the primary reason for them being so hated, I have to say its a little silly imo
Why not a video on frontier, as some exclusive monster are pretty interesting such as Gureadomosu (a water Gravios said to be one of its ancestor), zenith monster though... they are just bad
Btw its really sad we didn't had a 4/5th gen rare specie, as Molten and Brachydios are 2nd and 3rd gen monsters, ngl a Seregios rare specie would be cool for exemple
I won't say anything about the design, but Apex Rathalos and Zinogre are much more fun to hunt than their Deviants
So, let me get this straight... Subspecies and Rare Species are basically the same thing, with Variants and Deviants being basically the same thing as well? But while the four categories are all very similar, they're different?
Yup! Only difference between deviants and variants are deviants are almost always, maybe even solely brought about by an outside input. He might’ve said that in the video and I’m just repeating but I haven’t finished it yet
And rare species aren’t even basically the same thing, they are subspecies just extremely far and few between to the point where they have a separate category
Deviants are Deviants just because of the GU's Deviant System with all the tickets and levels and all that thing, outside of that, They're just Variants
Rare Species are Subspecies, but They're just... Rare to encounter, and usually in Rare specific Places like the Tower
Deviants are basically "Rare Variants"
Imagine a Malzeno that’s begun turning to stone in some abstracting way after staying in the sun too long (in an also abstract way).
It’s been heavily hindered by this and in response it’s begun doubling down on its quiro manipulation seeing as going out to eat a monster itself is out of the picture.
It’d also be neat if it’s super-ultra-you’re-gonna-cart rage form had it straight up eat some of the qurio in a last ditch effort to survive, kicking its bloodlust into overdrive.
Spitballing of course but it sounds neat in theory
10:49 My man you nailed.! If Capcom wants deviance in monster hunter rise they need to add what makes them DEVIANCES.!
Fun Fact : The scarred Yian Garuga from Iceborne is just a young Deadeye Yian Garuga. I mean if they can live long enough they can become Deadeyes Yian Garugas, after all they have the same wound. Besides, I think the New World Deadeyes are much stronger since there is all the bioenergy that boosts the monsters.
Scarred yian garuga have always existed since freedom the first yian garuga you canonically fight is a scarred and dead eyes are confirmed to be that way by a hunter. and if that where true there would be dead eyes every where since in 4u every yian garuga you fight is a scarred. need to see a source.
I’m glad I wasnt the only one who had Goss Harag bile issues
Okay I'll say this; I don't know the deviants, because I didn't play those games. But if the apex are just those, that's probably fine for new players.
Personally I think they should keep it simple with subspecies, rare species variants and deviants being the only version if you don't count things like frenzy
I love subspecies that take a monster and flip it but in a way that also makes ecological sense like coral puki puki which I think he is brilliant, variants are awesome and deviants need to be brought back properly not this apex bullshit
Also slight side note I think i lot of 1st gen subspecies should get reclassified as variant as even lore wise that's really what they are, especially black diablos that should be a variant straight up
If I had to pick a favourite for each category it would be
Subspecies = coral puki puki
Rare species = molten Tigrex
Variant = Chaotic gore magala
Deviant = Bloodbath diablos
You should do a video about monster variations that come from things like the frenzy virus or the anomaly.
Al-MUD-dren! Nice, I've been calling it Almuh-dron this whole time.
All these years and I still can’t get over the fact that they classify Black Diablos as a subspecies not a variant 😩
6:48 Is that a Fist of The North star reference?
My favour variation is a tie between Abyssal Lagiacrus and probably Hellblade Glavenus
1:12 actually there's 2, Crimson Glow Valstrax.
Whats about tempered Monster?
Wasn't there a joke somewhere in a data book or side quest where they joke that the guild is stubborn on changing monster classifications after being verified
Bro I don't think anyone would be mad if they just shot the Apex's in the head and brought the deviants back proper in sunbreak, I think that would make everyone much happier especially as they still refuse to give us armor for hunting the dang things. It's not like they don't have the movesets already in the game, just in need of an updated model and bringing over the armor sets. I think with how much focus is put into mixed sets nowadays having some sets that work better for wearing the whole thing is something that could be quite fun.
Deviants are just mainline version of zeniths
Ever since the deviants, Capcom has made many great variations. I didn’t like Glavenus in world but Acidic is really cool. And the subspecies Sunbreak brought back for title updates are more fun than ever. Still, there are a lot of duds like Ebony Odogaron, Aurora Somnacanth and the Apex of Rise. Which is sad, they ended up being boring despite the awesome concept.
Did he just say "die-a-blos" skull?
Deviants where amazing, but chances are extremely low for them to appear in Sunbreak updates with the introduction of Apex monsters
Zinogre needs to get a Rare Species fr
Although it would be great if the three lords had a variant unfortunately they can't, the monsters that debut in the title expansion don't receive new forms until the next generation.
You have examples from the first MH1G with Azure and in MHDos debuted Silverlos, MHFU who had nargacuga and in MH3rd debuted Green, MHGU added Valstrax and got his new form in MHRise, etc etc etc.
This is almost like a rule since MH1 so all three lords would be getting their Sub or Variant in MH6-MH6U, MH6Portable-MH6UPortable.
Or they can have the bad luck like Seregios that until today he doesn't have a variant or sub and we are about to finish the 5th Generation.
chaotic gore would like to have a word with you
@@kbrxion5620 Ehh... You know that Gore Magala debuted in MH4 right? that's why they released his variant in MH4U.
Monsters of the base games like MH1, MHDos, MHTri, MH4, MHG, MHW and MHR their flagship monsters gain a variant or sub specie in the Ultimate version.
You have examples like: Magnamalo, Nergigante, Lagiacrus, Rathalos, Kushala, Zinogre, Gore and the fated 4.
Those monsters came out in the base game and in the Ultimate versions received their variant/sub as: Scorned Magnamalo, Ruiner Nergigante, Ivory and Abyss Lagiacrus, Rusted kushala, Azure and Silverlos, Stygian Zinogre and Chaotic Magala.
Very different cases from Seregios, Velkhana and Malzeno who are part of the ultimate version and not the base version.
I dunno man i kinda like the Apexes. But I haven't played 4th gen though so i cannot comapre them with the Deviants. Apex Rathian feels like a Pink Rathian so i kinda view the Apexes as a kind of sub species.
I thought black diablos was changed to a variant
It's such a shame they ruined the term Apex for basically just re-skinned Deviants, because I loved the Apex monsters in 4U, and soloing each and every one of them was an experience I'll never forget (Apex Tidal Naja was pure evil though).
I like how even if apexes are a bit mid, some of theyr fights are better than the deviants imo
There are monsters in monster hunter?
yes, the hunter
burst species when
Subspecies in Gen 1 where basicly Tempered Monsters, and Rarespecies where Arch Tempered. But they rightfully expanded them into fullmfledged Monsters and made them truely interesting. While Subspecies have a lot of bad Classifications, they mostly like real life Subspecies, like Snow Tigers. As such im a bit anoyed everytime someone breaks his Spine by trying to explain a real Life Concept as if its pure made up Game Terminology.
Variants are basicly Silverback Gorillas, quiet cool, but a bit overused recently.
Rare Species are limited to Flagships, what makes them super special. Only the most iconic Monster have a Chance to get one. Rathian is on the Logo, so she counts.
While not explained in Story, I always saw them like Cryptids. A Big Food is basicly a Rare species of Ape, and a Phönix a rare species of Bird.
But they maybe less magically then the Phönix I guess.
Getting butted by bird wyverns and Bullfangos While fighting bosse is annoying asf
Aw man... Rampage was the shittiest experience in MH ever... Throughout the quest I was like "please end already!!!" Maybe it's more fun playing with friends but playing solo is so boring.
Now I know monster hunter has monsters...
But heres something that will BLOW your mind.
Did you know...
We HUNT the monsters?!
Came as a shock to me too
black diablos isn’t a fucking subspecies ? it’s a lambda female diablos in heat ! a temporary variant if anything
Red Khezu is actually a normal Khezu and white Khezu is the inferior albino sub-species of it, but for some reason white Khezu breed faster thus become more common than normal Khezu so younger generation don't realize it true origin and assume Red Khezu to be sub-specie instead.
in real world albino is considered inferior trait and that's the reason why the albino Khezu is a lot weaker than "normal" Khezu
Except they aren't all that rare considering you could exclusively fight them once unlocked.
I thought something was off about this video, your showing MHR gameplay in the background while playing music from MHW, it totally threw me off
My favorite subspecies is base monoblos who is a confirmed subspecies of Diablos
Fav rare probably metal raths
Fav variant old school furious rajang the new fight is kinda lame
Fav deviant elder frost gammoth
Fav apex zinoger cuz it looks the most like it's deviant
...confirmed where? I'm pretty sure Monoblos is a different species, but closely related. Like Radobaan and Uragaan.
@@handtomouth4690 hm freedom Diablos bio
@@blankblank6214 you just heard bullshit from another. Monoblos ISN'T a subspecies. Even Monoblos has it's own subspecies
@@eren7kruger129 Bru you ever read the monster bio of Diablos in mh freedom it says and I quote "Monoblos is a confirmed subspecies of Diablos" less you got a game that says otherwise monoblos is a subspecies
I know how you feel about Goss Harag, I wish to never hunt another one again, cause the biles don't drop.
It's easy, just break the back! (Its not really easy)
Comparing MH roster to pokemon is useless coz pokemon's is quantity over quality while the MH team is the opposite.
What's the deal with bird variations? Chickens? Falcons? Yup that's how dumb this question is 🤷
First :P
Yeah man silly monsters
I would have to disagree, the apexes were much better fights than they were in generations. Aside from fake bloodbath. If you actually compare them to the deviants, it is true they were inspired by them, not all of them are 1 to 1 rehashes, they each have like at most 2 moves from the deviants. And apex rathalos is nothing like the shittier deviant rathalos or the shit deviant rathian. i don't remember deviant rathian having 3 backflips or thunder lord sending out waves of lighting or any of the more cooler combos. Apexes are far superior fights, they're faster and have less bs attached to them, unlike their deviant counterparts. The only thing i dislike is that they don't have any unique gear.
They are easier compared to deviants, i guess.. i wouldn't really consider any deviant that hard, more so annoying. which was the case with over half of the deviants
The apex classes are such a downgrade from deviants. Horrible choice by Capcom.
