I got into Monster Hunter completely by accident.
I had just finished Horizon Zero Dawn and I wanted to find a game that was similar to that, but with character customization, because I am a sucker for all things "customizable".
And low and behold I came across a video that talked about 5 games like Horizon, one of these was Monster Hunter World. I wasn't too sure about the premise of the game, and like many people I thought it was a "new" series.
So the next time I was at my local game store I went in and asked if they had Monster Hunter World. Purchased it took it home, and started playing.
I was so overwhelmed by all the tutorials and the hand-holding, and the gameplay felt sooo slow... I ended up picking up the Insect glave, because I didn't like the idea of not being able to jump in an adventure game. Even longsword felt too clunky to me.
I got 50 hours in, walled at Nergigante, finally beat him after 8 consecutive tries.... and... quit. I was so fed up with the game, that I took it back to the game store and traded it in.
So about 2 months go by, and I happen to see a video on RUclips talking about Monster Hunter. At first I kind of ignored it, but then it kept popping up in my head. So I figured I'd watch it. I don't remember exactly what it was about, or who it was by, but it was what I needed to give World another go.
I went back to the Gamestore and purchased Monster Hunter World again. (It was a used copy and only cost 12 us dollars so I didn't mind buying it again 😬)
I made a new file, watched a tutorial on the 14 weapons and picked up the longsword for what would be the first time. 1500hrs later and I am addicted to all things Monster Hunter, World and Iceborne have become my favorite game of all time of any franchise(still enjoyed rise and waiting for Sunbreak)
The Monsters that were my walls are now some of my favorites to fight. And I'm a Longsword Weeb till the end....
And that's about it. I managed to get my Dad into the series as well (he is a Switch axe Main and we got to grind Rise together all the way to Valstrax)
    I'll stop talking now 😅

The irony of 5th generation of mh handholding is that it is may be boring tutorial with awfull text box instructions and simultaneously doesn't/badly explain pace or how some parts/mechanics works by saying just go exercise on dummy.

I started in MH3U.....then traded it back in after a week lol. Some months went by and I came back into it and fell in love with the LS. Went to MH4U, MHG, and the World/iceborne is when I finally learned about hitzones, items, what affinity did and the skills and such. I also experimented with more weapons and added the Hunting Horn as my second weapon.

This series is very sentimental to me, my brother bought me the game when we were kids back in 2005, he and i used to play it non stop back then, one of my fondest childhood memory was watching him beat kut-ku for me. wish he was still here to see the release of mhw :')

I personaly started MH back in 2007, i was 7 at the time and saw MHF2 in a store, since i was (and still am) pretty found of dinosaurs i had to take this game with a huge Tyrannosaurus like beast on the cover... and it was love at first sight, i adored the game, everything felt right, the maps, the creatures and the gameplay, and though i was pretty bad i couldn't stop playing, once i discovered MHFU i HAD to get it, and by the end of 2008 i finaly put my hands on it, and like you to this day its my most played game, and since i couldn't get a Wii i didn't played Tri, so MHFU all over again, the MH series was a breath of relief after school, as i was bullied a lot, i hold this game really dear to myself, i wrote fictions (got around 100 pages of these) and draw a lot, my outside school life was pretty much Monster Hunter, and it would continue as in 2013 i finaly had a 3DS XL and could played MH3U, i absolutly loved it, and the graphics were pretty good tbh... and then... MH4U came out... and oh my Gog this game was bonkers, its still in my opinion the best game in the series, it got everything, the story, the good monsters, the good maps (though screw the Volcano its just bad), and to this day its still my favorite game ever, once Gen came out i wasn't too hyped, i knew they couldn't top MH4U and it was the B team, i played MHP3RD and though it wasn't a bad game at all it wasn't at the same level as MHFU (remember there is 3 years between the 2) and i wasn't wrong, its still today the only MH i didn't full cleared, and i was really disapointed not seeing MHXX not came out for occident, after a breath of fresh air with Stories i kinda stoped until that fatefull Playstation conference... i was crazy (and afraid cuz didn't knew with the trailer if the game would launch on Xbox) and couldn't wait for World and once the game launched, and then... it was just magnificient, i loved every bit of it, it took me 150h to get to Xeno Jiiva since i took sooooo much time exploring the maps, watching the monsters behavior and everything, Kulve Taroth was almost another game too as i farmed her so much, i do think i have more hours of Taroth farming than most of the games i play beside MH... and after a kinda weak 2019 year iceborne came out... and it was World all over again, Velkhana is to me the best flagship ever (along with Gore) and Fatalis is the best endgame boss ever in a video game, only drawbacks of the DLC is that some species aren't here for no reason (sand Barioth, Green or Lucent Narga, Jade Baroth and others) and the clutch claw wich is just bad for the game, but its still a great DLC and a superb way to end this journey World was
Now today i still play World as i don't have a Switch, since i'm not really interested in Rise, i do think i'll download MH2 on emulator cuz my Series X need some repair
But anyway MH for life, i hold this game dear in my heart and already planned the MH songs there will be for my funerals (not soon i hope)
    Man that's a long comment 😅

as much as i say that Monster Hunter Tri/Ultimate was my first game, it was actually Monster Hunter Dos that got me captivated in the series, and lo and behold it was not the elder dragon or rathalos that got me hooked.....It was seeing my cousin using the great sword and smash the living heck out of cephadrome. When i was a kid, i was impressed at how "free" the player was. You could move wherever you wanted and go to each area whenever you want as well as fight a big monster!. Most of the games i played where linear and strict, the goal was forward and you had to go get that goal while also having the luck of getting some secrets along the line. games like sonic heroes, Power Ranger Dino Thunder, Pikmin and Four Swords adventure for the ds (the one that you could download for free at the time). All great games, but everything had a restriction or an invisible wall that couldn't let you explore or go to the places you wanted cause you needed something first.
Sadly i didn't get to play MH2 because my cousin had sold it to pay for books and i didn't have a ps2. So as the years passed by and i became a heavy zelda fan enthusiast (I even had the book of Hyrule), i was given something that looked like a black perfume bottle. But that wasn't the case, it was actually a hard drive for my Wii, and once i plug it in to the wii (with dad's help) i eventually found PARADISE (aka, the reason why i didn't buy wii games because of overseas restrictions and/or our Walmart and GameStop was stingy as hell). while i was marveling at the games that the hard drive had, i eventually found a cover of a wii game called "Monster Hunter 3" aaaaaand it couldn't be played, 2 years later i found the solution which was to change the resolution and WABAM i could start playing the game.......and then i stopped at barroth because i got a wii u and i was getting money to buy my own games.
Back to the Wii U, i started playing 3U religiously as if it was part of my routine breakfast. My wall was the Qurupeco because i had no idea how the heck to deal with 2 monsters. weeks pass by, i defeat the darn thing while reading how items worked, and the gloriest item that is Dung Bombs and Flash Bombs. After that, everything went smooth.....and then my next wall was Lagi. I loved his fight so much despite carting like 10 times and having to use the farm to restock on potions. That fight with lagi taught me ALL i needed to know about how to hunt, how opening's work, what is pushback moves, when to risk it, when to fight and when to run. And in doing so i finally got out of my shell and decided to try Hunting Horn and i absolutely loved it (still do, but that's probably because i'm not a 24/7 hunting horn main). I was trying different weapons and forging them from the monster i fought and found that i loved a lot of em but mostly it went likes (GS, HH and Swaxe). and my final monster was Azure Rathalos, after defeating him, i stopped playing the game because my Wii U died. and so i went on MH drought (cause i was poor and getting a 3ds was like getting a cheat paper in an exam room filled with teachers).
Eventually i got a 3ds (black friday's are insane) and Generations and that was the first time ever i had contact with other people playing this game, even CantaPerMe who was posting they're runs on the Miiverse (god what a weird site that was for artist). I got into the community and i was stunned at how they all were working together to beat monsters, all the hunts i did were solo so the aspect of working together with someone that loved the game as i did was weird to me. But once i did, i did not regret it a single bit. I still play solo but from time to time i will go with randoms and play with them just to have fun (despite some of them being bad and to that all i say is bring certain objects to help them like flash bombs). and after all of that, it was smooth ride in the monster hunter series, i had to climb mountains to get some games but other than that it was a smooth ride. Even joined a discord to play with other hunters (left it because discord has been getting crazy as of late, and i got hacked like 3 times so that was a sign for me to get the hell out of that app. and my luck with customer service is abyssal so i wasn't gonna tempt fate). I made a lot of friends that i know they are doing well and i hope some of them can get through their issues.
then World came, i'm sure i'm not the only who saw it and couldn't believe their eyes. Such a beautiful game for an already amazing franchise. Sadly i could not play world when it came out because i had no ps4. and then Iceborne came and with it my Uncle came in and bought me a ps4 (with KH3). I bought World and played through the entirety of world and found it....easy but comfortable. Some monsters got way to easy to read but i was having fun either way. Didn't do tempers because i didn't need the decos and the tempered monsters were......boring for me (it's the same monster with harder skin.) but in a good way. I liked their inclusion but it wasn't for me. then i bought Iceborne and had a tough time getting through it because now everything needed to be Clutch Clawed. at first i was happy, but then after fighting Barioth, i had enough of the clutch claw. But eventually i accepted that it was gonna stay no matter what, so i embraced it and fought my way through it, had fun fighting Ishvalda. The added content were amazing but very restrictive, like i could not do Safi because i had no PS Plus and i had to buy it since i used my free trial. But other then that, it was fun. The guiding lands were weird and odd that i needed specific levels of a certain area to gain all of the items and crystals needed to buff my weapons and also spawn some monsters but i got over it. and Fatalis was just amazing and a piece of art.
Rise came and it was fun, it was fresh air of what the series has come to and while many don't like it, I personally like it. Sure it's waaaay more action paced then the other franchise and some people are now putting methodical themes into the game (to them i say, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN WORLD HAPPENED?!) and somehow they are now game devs and many of them are now Stephen King's and nitpicking every single detail of the game (just because H has the same move as HH, and HH has the same move as H, doesn't mean they play the same at all or the weapons are samey. Because if we are going to nitpick that, then 50% of weapons have the same drawing attack animation). But other then that, it's an easy game to go in (i don't like that it keeps doing this and being very easy for 1st time players. but it's happening) and i had fun with it. I am stoked for Sunbreak but i wasn't ever overhyped. What i saw is what i got in Rise and i don't have issues with how rise is (how the content of Rise was handled IS an issue btw). So i'm going with an open mentality and accepting that Sunbreak is gonna be fast paced and i love it for it.
bonus things: Why did the devs gave LS the most...broken of skills? Harvest moon in the video was balanced, because that's how the LS players were gonna need to do to gained their full damaged counters back. Until the website said "unlimited spirit gauge".
also for a game called Monster Hunter: World. The world sure does hate the monsters huh? Like only monsters can get damaged by a waterfall, rocks and beetlebombs. The ravines only work to keep the monster trapped but they don't do jack to the hunter. Let's be honest, the world in MHW was in our favor and not the monster. the only thing it benefitted them was for transportation and landing, that's it. heck the Ratha's home was literally RIGHT NEXT to a Dam! A DAM and it can only be broken if the hunter either: baits the attack or uses a mega barrel bomb. They really didn't sugar coat it huh? just straight up (the world is your weapon, use it)

My brother got me into Monster Hunter. He had his PSP around when I was still playing on the Xbox 360. I kinda just looked over his shoulder a lot and saw him playing Monster Hunter. I know I borrowed his PSP to play on another save, it was Freedom 2, and I actually enjoyed the game, even being literally 8 years old. But the two of us bought Freedom Unite from the gamestop shelves, and I convinced my parents to buy me my own PSP to play it. I was walled by Blangonga for the longest time, and I think my brother helped me beat him, but I stopped playing after that because MONSTER HUNTER TRI came out.
I pretty much didn’t play much of Tri because, well….. I got it for wii… Embarrassing, I know. But, I DID play a fair amount of 3 Ultimate, just before 4 Ultimate came out.
My god did I play 4U. I LOVED the game. To the core, I was hooked on the new monsters, the new areas, the new insect glaive and charge blade… It was like I just found the holy grail of games. Every second of the game was pure fun.
Then came Generations. I played that game far up to G rank, and I loved every second of it. I loved the hunter arts, the adept style specifically, and I loved the art style. Sadly, I can no longer get that save because the 3ds memory card got broken in an accident involving the back panel and not putting the card back in correctly. It was horrible.
Currently, I’m going through world and iceborne again to catch up to my ps4 save, which only got past Namielle. I’m also just slowly going through GU for fun. It’s a refreshing experience. I remember my first reaction to world being extremely hype. It was probably the most time I spent on an MH game.
I truly do love the feelings and experiences this game gave me. I can’t bring my self to buy rise because it doesn’t seem like my current playstyle, but I’ll likely buy whatever comes next, for better or for worse.

It's funny how I'm not a huge fan of Monster Hunter compared to a lot of you here but it's an interest that never fails to pull me back. Also added that every console/platform I owned was due to a MH releasing there.
It all started when I was 10. My friend invited me to sleep over and play Monster Hunter on PS2. He told me about how good it is. We never got to play it since I wasn't allowed to go. Few months later, I was given a PSP for my birthday, with a few anime games. I visited another friend's and noticed he has a MHF2 disc lying around and I remembered that I was supposed to play that. Then I got absolutely hooked that I'm contemplating on whether or not to return it.
Played it for months, Congalala and Khezu were my first walls that almost made me quit. But I pushed on until I can solo Tigrex and Elder Dragons in the guild hall. I continued towards Unite alone (returned the disc btw) since no one else around played. Clocked in hundreds of hours, but my memory stick corrupted and I lost it all. I resorted to cheating which in turn led me to my premature encounter with Fatalis whose theme and music gave me nightmares for years to come.
Took a break for years until I got my hands on Portable 3rd and a guide. I met my long-time favorite flagship Zinogre. Unfortunately, I didn't play that long, then stopped again.
Years flew once more then I got my hands on 4U and a 3DSXL. Enjoyed every bit of it. Finished it until Gogmazios. This is also my very first time playing in multiplayer but even then I'd prefer hunting alone. I also met a good friend here who strengthened my love for MH but never met again.
Onwards to Generations, pushed through until Nakarkos and barely touching the deviants BUT this is when I found a local LAN party and we used to hang out at a café.
Then came World, and of course, a PS4. Played a bit until Lunastra, then transferred to PC and (by using cheats) caught up to my PS4 progress. This is where the greatest sense of awe was instilled in me. A living, breathing world, epic soundtrack, and lengthy battles. Got into Iceborne a little late but enough to catch up to Safi'jiva towards Fatalis, my childhood nightmare. I still feel the fear it gave me back then which made me commit a lot of mistakes. I haven't beaten it solo but one day, I will. Not soon though because my graphics card broke.
Rise was then announced. I was happy but didn't care much. Before the trailers, I told the community that it'd be nice to have customizable movesets and to my surprise, we did get a Switch Skill system. The release loomed and stars aligned, I saved up enough money with the help of friends who commissioned me to buy a Switch and Rise. Like the others before it, I didn't play it religiously. Only clocking in around 200 hours across 3 save files. It didn't satisfy me the way World did. The music didn't have the same kick and the fights felt a little arcade-y.
Now waiting for Sunbreak and hopefully play with others more and help out new people.

Been aware of monster hunter for years but never been able to give it a go due to the platforms they were on (Only really played on PC). World really was the game changer, and I agree with the feelings on Rise, its not scratching the itch I wanted to scratch from a monhun title the same way world did- and still does. Rise is still fun, and its definetly a different take on the franchise which I respect but I sure hope we don't get another MH game like it in terms of how it 'feels'- if that makes sense. I also started out with the very first game. A friend of mine back in the day came up to me saying he had found two AMAZING dragon games for the PS2 and asked if I wanted to borrow them for a while (and make a copy of them for myself, long live piracy lol). The games were "Drakengard" and "Monster Hunter". I had never heard of any of them before but tried them out. Drakengard was fun, but it didn't really got me hooked or anything. Monster Hunter on the other hand was TOTALLY different, not only in terms of getting me hooked right away but it was also really different from all of the hack'n'slash action adventure games that were so popular on the PS2. The combat was slow and methodical (and using the right analog stick was pretty untuitive as GS user back then), the exploration was really fun and the world really felt alive. A lot of people say that their first experience with series isn't that great and they end up abandoning it, only to try it out later in life and falling in love with it. Not me, I was hooked and in love right from the start. I started playing and had two other friends playing along as well (no online, though. We would each play at our own homes and talked about what we had done or found the next day in school) until we all reached the Yian Kut-Ku at around the same time. At this point, I was still rocking the SnS, because it was the actual default weapon and we didn't start the game with one of each to try out. We had to actually buy or craft new weapons, and lemme tell ya: Buying/Crafting was REALLY expensive back then. Anyway, we all started fighing the Kut-Ku and it was a hell of a wall, to the point where these friends of mine straight up gave up on the game and series as a whole. I was the only one that stuck with it and got through this big chicken, and felling it was one of the greatest rushes I've ever felt with any game. This was the point where I swapped the SnS for the GS, it was the only for me to kill it. I was so in love with the game that, at some point, I think right around when I was about to fight the Rathalos for the first time, my savefile got corrupted and I lost everything. When something like this happens, it's usually so traumatic that I can never get myself to play said game again. But not with MH. I lost my savefile, got sad over it but just went straight for a new savefile. I've put hundreds of hours into this game alone.

Seeing a grey stegosaur chased by blue raptor and eventually snatched by a giant red dragon, then some human try picking up the dragon with giant weapons. World was my first serious MH. I played a little bit of MH until i reached kutku and never been able to beat it. Unfortunately i did not own the PSP and had to give it back. When world was announced a friend of mine lend me a copy and said his brother in law bought it and he wanted to play Bloodborne so we swap copies for about a month. I got to the end game grind and was hard stuck against Behemoth. I tried solo since i dont have a PSN account. I played non stop and only getting around 3 hrs of sleep before my shift but i got addicted really quick. CB was the weapon i mained and damnit even if im bad at it i still pushed through. Then I had to give the copy back. When they announced it will be released on PC i waited until they released IB before buying my copy. Fast-forward today and I'm playing Rise. I had the same feeling as you did. CB in rise did not clicked for me and ended up playing with hammer and SnS more. I don't mind if they focus on portable versions of the game. Graphics is never really a selling point for me but I hope for future games they release it to all consoles and PC. And im hoping that the next game will be a bit more grounded. I had fun swinging around with wirebugs but sometimes I miss World's slower paced hunts 😂

Oh snap, it took almost two weeks of binging popular Monster Hunter YT’er footage and now the algorithm brought me someone new to watch and backlog.
My very first experience with MonHun came from when I was midway through high school and decided I wanted to buy a 3DS again (since I’d sold all my Nintendo stuff back in middle school urgh stupid younger self) and made a list of all the interesting 3DS games I could find people recommending. Among them was Monster Hunter, so I downloaded the demo to what I assume was 3U.
Ditzed around for some 30 minutes with no idea wtf I was doing because I’d really only ever been a big Mainline Nintendo kid with the Marios and the Pokemons (absolutely not Zelda because even that was too complicated for my younger self originally) and other much simpler, easy to enjoy games like platformers and the such. With that outta the way, I moved on to Alpha Sapphire and learned breeding at a beginner’s level and spent all my free time between classes running laps and hatching eggs. Fast forward to the release of World, and my friends who all had experience in MH4U were excited while I had little interest since all my focus was on (mostly turn-based) JRPGs on my newer PS4 that I bought for games like Persona 5 as I started branching out (we’re an Xbox group). I’m chilling at a doctor’s appointment one day and bored when I ask one of them to stream their gameplay for me so I could see what was going on. Bought World the next day, and have been branching out slowly ever since.
While all my friends were hyped for Rise, I had other games to play still and knew that if I caved and bought it for $60 on release I wouldn’t play it enough to justify spending that much money at the time on a single game. So I waited it out for a few months and then in a few days managed to clock in more hours than any of my friends who’d all been trying to pressure me into getting the game sooner all on my own, and it’s definitely my favorite one on the basis of pick-up-and-play function on the Switch. It’s the easiest by far to simply grab my Switch and queue up a hunt, then go mash buttons and do crazy crap against some cool yokai monster for 20 minutes before bed. Having spent these past two weeks exploring 4U for now (3U will come after) I get why people like the older styles, but I’d prefer a timeline with a 3U/4U port to Switch and Rise existing than having an entirely new older style game because Rise offers an experience these others don’t and I crave.
But I will say that with my expectations as low as they are, I’m excited to explore underwater combat. I know that people hated it, so I know what to expect and how to be excited for a change of pace unlike any other entry (but QoL stuff means I gotta dip my toes in 4U before diving into 3U).

My first mh game was mh4u. My dad had bought me a shit ton of games for the 3ds, and mh just happened to be one of the ones he bought. I didn't know anything about it, and had never heard of it prior to finding it in my game collection. I just saw a big edgy black dragon on the cover and went, "This looks awesome! Let's play it!" I was absolutely shit at the game for a long time. I chose one of the most complicated weapons as my first (the charge blade) and could not figure out for at least 1/3 of my playthrough how to actually charge the charge blade and use sword and sheild mode again. I would basically attack the monster until the charged icon appeared, and since the blade always deflected off the monster, I just fought in axe mode for the rest of the hunt. I finally looked up a tutorial and couldn't help but fucking slap my face for my stupidity. I remeber rathalos, seregios, tigrex, diablos, and zinogre kicked my ass for the longest time, but I always felt so accomplished ending those amazing creatures. To this day mh4u remains one of my most memorable mh games for the sheer reactions I shared fighting these monsters. Since then I have played mhg, mhgu, mhw, and mhr, and have forever become a mh fan. So many great experiences over the years that no other game has come close to competing with what monster hunter has done for me. I'm so glad my dad stumbled upon this franchise.

I didn't even beat stories 2 before I had Rise downloading. Currently prepping for sunbreak. I went back and played world. My friend and I are trying to platinum it. Rise I mained light bowgun for a good while until I got curious about the gunlance. Mained that the rest of the game. At some point I switched to switchaxe. I've sunk so much time into those games. I have genU and 3U now, but I haven't touched them much. Also, I don't know how but Barroth became my favorite monster. I just love him. First build figure I ever purchased.

Rise is my first MH game. I didn't know anything about the game and was wishing for it to be harder all throughout low rank. I didn't even know what any of the armor skills and weapon stats meant, but didnt care because I was shalacking every monster. After beating low rank I took about 10 months off. Now I have been playing it consistently for awhile, it is actually somewhat challenging now so I was forced to learn what weapon and armor stats meant, plus what items did. I didn't even know you could use endemic life as items for my first 40 hours in the game..
I am hooked now. I am excited for sunbreak and am waiting until MHGU goes on sale again so I can pick that up.

Although it can be easier since you have absolute evasion, or adept/valor styles, but even with those, you will see that if you mistime something, you will get punished hard.

I dunno, I just love the combat. Actually, I lied, stories 2 is my favourite game and rise is my second, but that's just because I often feel a little bad for the monsters in the main series, and I like turn based combat more than action combat.

Pretty shallow too with an awful story, maps and weird monster selection (you keep fighting the same ones across difficulties, it has all 3 of the copy and pasted Great Baggi/Great Izuchi/Great Wroggi and the pacing is so bad in master rank after MR 10 or 20 where you don't unlock any cool options or monsters to fight for 10+ fight straight. Also village vs hub low rank missions just make no sense.

My exposure to the series was pretty lame compared to yours and/or mostly everyone else in the comments, but I'll still say it anyway:
Back when I was in High School, I have a friend who owns a PSP. (Just a little context: In the Philippines, any gadget can be considered a Luxury. Especially PSP and other game consoles.) At the time, I was only addicted to Pokémon (Emulators on the phone is a thing, 'ya know? People might consider a phone, a phone. But for me, it's my game console. (That can send and receive text messages and calls, anyway.....) I'm also playing some games for the PSP then. It was Birth by Sleep, if I remember correctly. (Yes. I'm a KH fan.) That friend of mine exposed me to few great games thanks to him letting me play 'em. (He's a the reason I'm a huge fan of Dissidia. So yeah, imagine my disappointment on how NT turned out. Though I won't lie, the stages and character models look too d*mn nice. Just a shame that was the gameplay. Going back.....) Also, he plays Freedom Unite on his PSP. And the first monster I fought in my hunting career was the Congalala. (He was fighting it when I saw him playing it. I said I wanted to try it, so he did. God! I fell in love with the game.) This was all in 8th grade, by the way. When we got to 9th grade, another friend of mine made my addiction to these type of gameplays worst (or great? I can't think of a better word.) by introducing me to God Eater Burst. Of course, I loved it as well. I was addicted to it at some point. So much, I even got to the point where I'm helping my friends beat some Aragamis. (Which is pretty unusual considering the fact that I'm addicted to it, but I suck big time. 🤣) Also during that time as well, that very same friend made me play Portable 3rd (it has English Patch by the way) and you have an idea how that goes. We're still playing it 'til 10th grade. We're basically going back to FU and P3rd every now and then when we felt like playing the other one. We can just download it on a ROM site, so there's no need for us to worry. There was this one time where that very same friend again (that introduced me to P3rd) have us play Freedom Unite multiplayer for the first time. (By us, I mean me and that friend of mine that introduced me the series) And you best believe despite the many times we've played, we still suck so this f*cker (he's way better than us. And has a higher rank. He's more addicted to it than us.) decided to throw us against a Rathian. He just stands by watching us while me and my other friend gets destroyed by it. (Not to mention, we still have the early game equipments. (The best we got was Giaprey set) He laughs at our misery. That made me not play it for a long while. (Though I won't deny the fact that I still love the series to the point I follow updates of it even if I can't play it myself.) Fast forward to the present, I can go back and play FU and P3rd whenever I felt like it. (Of course I've lost my save file. But I'm cool with it. Can't really do anything about it. 🤷) I would love to try out the new generation games though. I'm mostly interested in Tri's Underwater Combat. I would love to try it myself. Also I'm laughing at myself for simply having the though of "I might be in the new world now, but you best believe I won't adjust to this easily. I'll still fight like an old timer. 🤣"
If you've reached this far, I'd like to add something: I love Stories. I hope I could play the second game someday. 😍 It looks fun, not to mention a whole lot of monsters too. Including the new ones. New monster for me to Ride! 🤩

MHW is my favourite game of all time, dethroning Nights Into Dreams after 20 years.
The feeling that it is a world, not a game, is what keeps bringing me back. The gameplay is fantastic and even if it's a bit too grindy and had mistakes like tenderising, it's amazing.
I tried getting into MH4U but still haven't managed to like it.
Rise... is OK. I hate that the levels look so poor, coming from World. The game is very, very easy and it's missing the charm of World for sure. To me it feels blandly Japanese (I have lived in Japan and love it, but Rise's version is too cliche). Some cool monsters in it tho, and palamutes are cool. Still nowhere near World.
I am looking forward to getting into MH4 to get a more "old school" experience to compare to

I'm a "World baby" and no other Monster Hunter interests me due to the loading screens. If Capcom ever remade them without loading screens, you bet your butt I'd give the older games a try. I also don't like rise because it has no hit stops. I really like that meaty impact in World. I also prefer the IG in World compared to Rise.
I love listening to all these people and their experiences of how they got into the hobby that they love.
The only reason I even tried World is because of my roommate that loved Monster Hunter. I hadn't even ever heard of the game. He asked if he could use my TV because he was saving up for his own and I agreed. I'd watch him play and the game looked pretty fun. He let me try it eventually and I really liked it. I loved the immersion. I loved the lack of loading screens. I loved that each monster was basically a boss battle. I became an IG lover and put 250 hours in the PS4 version before I put another 250 hours in the PC version. I am finally playing through Iceborne and it's pretty good. A lot of subspecies, but it gives a little twist to an old fight I suppose. I was hoping that World got more monsters, but meh, it is what it is. I have tried other Monster Hunters, but yea, the loading screens are just super annoying to me. World is the only Monster Hunter I appreciate...maybe that means I'm not a Monster Hunter fans, but a World fan, but what Capcom did with World, made me a fan of the game and wanting another like it....Rise was not that game. It did not RISE to the occasion.
