Vaal Hazak, from the moment he rose out of that pile of corpses, he disgusted me in the best way possible. He is basically undead and with effluvium, he can kill you with our even touching you. Another thing you can add to Khezu's creep factor is that it has canonically eaten a person alive and whole. Back in Freedom Unite the Elder Dragon Researcher in Pokke Village mentions he had a gifted student who had started to travel in order to learn its secrets. She kept a journal or sent letters of her travels and experiences which she sent to her teacher. They were later published by Hunting Life, the serialised magazine published by the Guild you could read at the bookshelf in your house. While on an expedition to the Old Swamp where she befriended the Veggie Elder she decided to explore one of the caves. She was actually eaten alive by a Khezu which grabbed from above. She mentions "now I know how a Kelbi feels". She was saved by a group of Hunters who were secretly sent by her teacher to make sure she was safe. She would later fight a Gravios alongside them in the Old Volcano using a Bowgun
For me one of the scariest monsters in the series is by far the Gigginox Leeches are one of those creatures that many find unsettling, so making one of them massive with wings and legs is already unsettling. The animations give it so much eerie personality, oh and we can't ever forget the babies it spawns and can sometimes leave on its back as it climbs the ceiling and lets their leech babies drop down onto unsuspecting hunters. Combine all of that with the very simple unsettling point of "you don't know which side is which at first" and imo you have one of the scariest monsters in series
Fun fact about nerscylla. It actually doesn't have the fangs that spiders use to slurp liquefied insides of its prey. Spiders also usually start the liquefying process while the prey is still alive. This means that nerscylla probably don't wait for the gypseros to die before flaying it. Also, nerscylla hunt the rubber chicken because its skin is rubben and therefore resistant to electricity (which nerscylla just so happens to be weak to).
another Co op game without any meaningful open-world multiplayer elements. Those companies that make Monster Hunter or Final fantasy really need to watch the kings avatar animation and get some inspiration on how to make a complete games
Honestly Gogmazios has been one of those monsters that sort of freak me out as well. The burning tar giving off a black smoke that shrouds it is very eerie, as well as the glowing markings on its underside. The proportions are also odd, as its limbs seem very thin compared to the rest of its body, giving it an almost skeletal appearance. The music also REALLY drives that freaky tone, especially in his phase 1 music using the water harp, and other metallic percussion and dissonance. Last but not least, his roar is horrifying, almost like a scream.
Gogmazios Hands down the scariest one You'll know it when that thing Starts Flying not to mention the giant snake, A world eater, A Rotting walking corpse, and a walking virus that makes the other monsters 10x terrifying (4u Apex PTSD) ohh and fatalis
Not sure how you missed Gigginox, especially if you faced it in Tri where Dark Caves was an actual game mechanic. Just imagine yourself in a pitch black darkness when you see a feint glow in the distance, next thing you know, you find yourself being both poisoned and with leeches draining your life away as you stumble around looking for an exit.
Nakarkos because of the whole undead motif added to its squid/cuttlefish look, and the lore stuff with it shooting down air ships and eating the crew inside or that one G rank quest in GU where a nakarkos ate an entire costal village (minus the old man who issued the quest) in a single night also those hook things it has in its mouth/throat make me uneasy
I find Paolumu really freaky. It’s very cute at first and looks like a little puffball, but then it shows its angry face and looks just like a giant flying rat.
I personally find Gigginox much more on the unsettling side than Khezu. The fact that it give birth multiple times mid-fight is just so spine tingling to me. Also honorable mention, Shara Ishvalda for those goddamn eyes.
Rajang has always been scary in the game play aspect at least. As for Diablos, I remember being really surprised when I first really saw its face in World. They had managed to make it so scary and threatening looking. Up until then, it just used to be an angry herbivore.
Gigginox is the scariest monster by far, actually got shivers in my first few fights, might still if I still tuned into the game's audio. Deviljho really scared me in World, I hid in the camp from it while it was still hounding me at the entrance. Better still, an awkward conversation was in the room at the time and I really wanted to leave, and only thought you could leave from the map. Seeing a strong invader like Apex Jang or Apex Deviljho or Frenzied Azure back in 4u was scary. Ooh, Nibelsnarf and Gobul are good for a few scares, too.
When I first started with 4U, anything bigger than a Kelby freaked me tf out, so I never got to the fear of jho till World. Sometimes that dude just pops out from nowhere while you're looking at the endemic life.
khezu i find cute in "its so ugly haha" kind of way. but shara ishvalda genuinely freaked me out when i first saw it. seeing it shatter it's rocks to become this thing shocked me.
Rajang's an interesting choice cause while the base form is dark furred with burning red eyes and thats scary to me, the scariness turns a bit to awe when it goes golden and the fact that its a monkey that basically fights against gods out of sheer defiance and tenacity. Cant really make that scary.
I’m ok with Khezu and nerscylla (and garangolm) but there are scarier monster than Yama, Rajang and Diablos… you could have talk about Gigginox, gogmasios, Nakarkos, deviljho (and the savage one)
Creepiest monster to me would probably be Fatalis cause it feels like an anomaly in the world for how powerful it is for a simple fire breathibg dragon, and the first of the black dragons introduced. Sure its design detracts a bit cause his head design's a bit more comical than later high tier elders, but his lore is still freaky. One with good potential to be scary intimidating is probably Gaismagorm cause of its unusual body shape and anatomy alongside all of that blood
Nakarkos on a conceptual level scares me a creature who potentially came from the abyss of the ocean and in a short time almost completely genocides an area to make it's nest just for its own gluttony is really damn scary to me
Fun fact about Khezu: in earlier games because it's blind, hunters weren't considered "spotted." which means they didn't get access to the "panic dive" when fighting it
Rakna Kadaki is also scary cause she can stretch her godamn neck out, but yeah Nerscylla stretching their fangs out makes my skin crawl whenever I fight them.😖 My grandparents bought me a plush gorilla when I was a baby and I was too scared to play with it. My parents put it to use by placing it by the phone so I wouldn't touch it and get tangled in the cords. I don't like most monkeys by default and rajang is no exception. Also, I actually had a dream that my sister had a pet Diablos. Except it didn't dig it would fly for some reason and that made me go "Wtf!?" even in my dream 🤣
I was on a camping trip when I first encountered Khezu. I was in a cabin with the sounds of nature all around me at night, I couldn't sleep so I decided to keep playing Rise until I got tired. The atmosphere of a dark cabin in the woods made encountering the slimy frozen chicken looking wyvern even more unsettling. I wouldn't say I'm scared of the Khezu but I'm definitely unsettled by it.
I was REALLY hoping just to see qurios because one of my biggest fears are parasites that drain blood/life from creatures but I’m glad you did decide to go outside of the box with your choices, ie. excluding the obvious Vaal. Great vid and happy halloween!
I remember installing a mod for mhworld where it replaces a lot of SFX including monsters roars and stuff for the OG SFX, and I swear, hearing rajang fricking angry coming towards you in the guiding lands is a really intimidating thing
Two that stand out for me: Gore magala for being a fungus that reanimates dead wyverns and moves them around like puppets with no eyes, Gogmazios for the sheer power, terror of that fight and epicness. When you see it take off for the 1st time and it unleashes hell, that's when you know fear.
my pick for a scary monster would be Barlagual, mostly because I know that thing would be rendered in a horrifying way in the new style. It sucks hunters dry of their blood and will apparently bleed from the mouth if it's interrupted while using it's pin attack/eating. You don't usually see monsters do that
I think the scariest monster i've hunted so far is the somacanth, not because of its looks but rather its the fact that it and it's aurora subspecies can sing.
The reason Nerscylla flaws Gypceros is because of Gypceros' rubbery skin. Nerscylla is very weak to lighting naturally and we know that rubber is very good at stopping electricity. So to help deal with it's weakness Nerscylla covers itself in the rubbery skin to insulate itself from electricity, thats why the corpses aren't eaten. Nerscylla just want's their skin.
I find that gorn is the unholy combination of a mole rat and a skull crawler from Kong skull island with all of the limbs of both plus the mouth resembling a demogorgon
I like MH1 and probably up to MH3 biology videos a bit more than the latest ones in the recent games. They're less flashier and more natural, it really feels like you're out filming them for a documentary. I loved Rise videos with the japanese teathre theme, but it was more "look how cool he is" rather than "look at this animal in his habitat"
I gotta add, Lagiacrus: It's not scary on its own, but the first time you see it in Tri is during a quest to collect Piscine Liver from a water monster, I think a 2 star mission. It was really scary for me, having this really strong monster in its natural environment hunting me while I'm trying to go about my time, but what's worse is finding out it's invincible. My friend ended up being too afraid to complete the quest and had me do it
