    I always finished my metal in 180, followed by self etch, then 2k surfacer. That was when I did "peelers" when I worked at dealerships in the 80's and 90's. I helped Chrysler analyze a peeling problem they had back then. Usually the problem is because the factory primer was over baked. This makes the primers too "molecularly" tight resulting in adhesion problems. That's what it appears to be on that Frontier. My advice to the owner: unload it after its repaired, it's just getting started and eventually all the panels will begin peeling, probably the front of the roof will be next. I like your multiple cleaning process, used to do the same myself, it definitely makes a difference. 👍

    After watching a lot of these videos I got what I need to fix my paint. The roof is actually rusting in several places. Spring is coming.... Gonna fix all these spots as explained in these videos... Thanks garage noise. I'm confident I can do it right!

      My frontier rain gutters in the roof are also peeling and rusting underneath. So hoping this class action suit gets a good hold as ever panel on my truck has some form of blister or adhesion issue.

    Really like your videos Chris. You explain every step clearly. Being a first timer I'm struggling with gun setup. Devilbiss finishline 1.5 primer and 1.3 single stage white. 30 psi at the gun. Not sure what to use as far as fluid fan setup. Great videos.

      On paint, I would start with full fan and 2.5 turns out from closed and adjust from there as needed.

    I thought you had to have a 320G scratch to primer over a panel, but I guess it’s different when you start right from the metal rather than sanded paint or filler.
    Thanks Chris and great job 👍🏽

    • @GarageNoise
      @GarageNoise  4 месяца назад +3

      Yes, it's different over metal and for different products. Paint and filler hold the primer a bit better. The upol calls for a 180 grit scratch so when it doubt ust the product technical data sheet. Good question and I appreciate the support!

    Love the videos Chris always looking forward to the next one, I have learned a bunch! DIY’r new to auto body but getting ready to strip an 05 sprinter to bare metal and repaint. I believe I saw you using Speedokote blender in other videos, just wondering if you have any experience with their other products? I have a gal of their epoxy I want to know if it’s really easy sanding or if I need to put urethane over it? Also wondering what the durability is on Speedokote.

    Early Chevy 2000 models notorious for white paint pealing off. It's all over my 2001 truck. The clear bubbles up then the paint peals off....

  • @luisflicks4974

    Im restoring a car, in the video you suggested to prime over metal with epoxy and then 2k primer. What's the difference between the two and what would be the purpose of doing that. Do you recommend doing these steps in new body panels that are already primered? Thank you

  • @daubs2daubs69
    @daubs2daubs69 14 дней назад +1

    Crazy my white 17' Frontier has the same identical paint peel on the hood. Also my roof rain gutters have had the sealer pull away from the pannel and are now starting to rust. Every panel has some small blister or adhesion issue on the edges. This really should be a class action suit against Nissan. Off topic what makes auto body clear fog up and peel on many repaints I've seen?

    • @GarageNoise

      It's sun damage breaking down the clear coat.

    I have one of those white Crown Vic PI's that has sections peeling off all over the car. I was going to try feathering those areas, but I'm thinking after watching this vid that I should bite the bullet and take it all down to metal. Comments?

    • @GarageNoise
      @GarageNoise  4 месяца назад +1

      Just keep in mind if you don't strip it you may just be delaying the enviable peeling later on. You may put air to it and it may fly off in sheets.

    I was under the impression that 2253 is not tech a direct to metal. I have the same stuff but reading the instructions it has a * stating to etch bare metal. So I’m a bit confused with there directions. And does this stuff build good cuz that’s what I’m going to apply over my epoxy for some final blocking.

      Yes sand bare metal with 180. You can check the TDS. It can be applied to bare metal

    Chris on the burn thru area I see you used self etching primer . What grit of sand paper did you scuff up the self etching primer with and how many coats for self etching primer did you put on ? Also would I need to seal it or straight paint over it with base coat .

    • @GarageNoise
      @GarageNoise  4 месяца назад

      For that situation you dont need a heavy coat but you want it covered. It's a chemical bond when using self etching primer. I sand it with 600 because you need a mechanical bond between the primer and paint. No need to seal it but you can if you want a uniform substrate. Good question, I appreciate you support!

    I have a question. According to upol , from what I understand, that you are supposed to use etching primer on bare metal before using upol 2253 (even though it says dtm). How good is the adhesion when done this way?

    • @GarageNoise
      @GarageNoise  4 месяца назад +1

      If you check the TDS it can be applied to bare metal and I haven't had an issue with adhesion even when sanding it.

      The "dealership" subs the work out to bodyshops. They do the work for the dealer. I worked at a shop and all I was doing was stripping the paint off the entire car with the exception of bumpers and mirrors and door and trunk jams. If the car had dings or dents that would be an extra cost.....those aren't under dealer warranty. The painter would spray right over it they didn't want to pay extra 🏌🏼‍♂️
