- Skies of Arcadia is a wonderful RPG and one of my favourite games of all time, and I think it's finally time that I shared it with you, so sit back, relax, and let me tell you a story...
Skies of Arcadia is tragically completely unavailable to purchase on any currently existing store, and was also never released on PC. If you want to play it yourself, your options are the GameCube and Dreamcast versions, which were the only releases. Sorry.

Jon reads the dialogue with all the enthusiasm and gusto of parent reading their favorite bedtime story to their kids for the very first time. I love it and I'm excited for the rest of the 44-part series where Jon gets to be nothing but excited and happy.
i was just about to mention this but make a joke about how let's plays are actually little sibling culture. it's the same massive vibe as "big brother has realized you are now old enough to watch his fav game, and he'll read out the dialog since you're small and would take awhile"
You can almost hear Jon's massive smiles throughout the episode.
almost? The smiles were so overpowering as to be contagious. :D
Smiles per minute in this playthrough is going to be stratospheric, fittingly enough, for both viewers and Jon.
I just realized.... this is Jon's _Zoo Tycoon_ . I think I'm going to like this series.
I like how the very beginning is basically A New Hope until the pirates.

Imho the correct response to 'my name is Fina' shouldn't be that it's a 'great' or 'nice' name, I'd argue correct response would be 'that name is almost Fine'

More than anything else, the loveliest thing about this series is how much Jon is clearly smiling throughout all of it.
The fact that Air Pirates still use old-style sails on their ship when other ships are more modern-looking means that the whole old-style look is there purely for aesthetic reasons. Which I have no problem with, that would be my choice as well.
Or maybe hybrid propulsion is way cheaper.
To be fair the time period is that of the early ironclads. While military ships might be ironclads civilian ships would still be majority wooden.
I don't think it's 'purely' aesthetic. The game makes quite clear that Valua is the industrial powerhouse, while other cultures and civilisations are either lagging behind or exploiting different methods or means.
Vyse and Aika are guest characters in the game Valkirya Chronicles, which does feature Voice Acting, and i can say, the way you pronounce the names is right.
Fina is also the medic

I really do love how 90's and early 2000's games just get you straight into the meat of things. No giant tutorials, no massive cutscenes, just evil empires, air pirates, and someone to rescue

Well, to be fair, the game operates by Pokemon rules, figure of speech, so how much tutorial would you even need?
The biggest difference to me is that the "tutorials" you're referring to have an entire level dedicated to them and (in cases) poorly integrate story or something.

Where one could feel incredibly self-satisfied and clever by figuring it out for themselves only to later realize it was all spelled out in a little booklet? It sure felt great back in Mortal Kombat to master a character and their moves... in an era without internet. You think that the library can tell you how to rip out someone's spleen with Sub-Zero? :D Ahhhh... nostalgia.
The Age of Sail but with Floating Islands is the best setting and I can prove it with math

Not sure how much of a completionist MATN is going to be at this game, but for anyone getting into this game because of him, know that with discoveries that the longer you take in a game to discover them the less they are worth with the logic that there are other explorers out there looking for them also and you might be only verifying someone else's discovery. But the good news is time is more story-based in this game. So basically before you progress the story, make as many discoveries as you can before moving on. It's the game's way of rewarding you for not just focusing only on the story. See the world!
And now I better understand Jon's desire for bridges with wraparound windows in Starfield. That IS a good bridge.
While looking this up, thanks to JelloApocalypse's series initially, I heard a rumor that Sega could possibly be working on bringing Skies of Arcadia back from the "dead" to modern consoles finally. This was from several articles made last year, so I hope that we'll get this game eventually.
I see a post about that once a year on Reddit. Until I have it in my hands, I remain skeptical.
I'm hearing that rumor for more then 10 years.
Same with a Bloodborne pc port. Stop playing with my heart, you monsters

The sheer joy that the opening theme and the introduction theme to the Blue Rogues gave me can't be expressed through words
We have heard many a tale from MATN of Skies of Arcadia. I did not forsee the day we'd get a series of it, though. Oh, me of little faith, I say.
Skies of Arcadia's intro instantly grabbed me as a kid. The initial mystery around Fina, the imposing metal warship style of the Valuan armada juxtaposed by the older style pirate ship, and then the game just kicks you off RAIDING said warship and rescuing Fina all within the FIRST 30 MINUTES of the game.
JRPGs get a lot of guff for starting slow, and some of them certainly earn that, but one of the best things about Skies is its pacing, in every way. You start off as just another raider on your dad's ship, going on small scale adventures, and the scale slowly builds throughout the game. I won't spoil where it goes, of course, but it all feels incredibly natural and earned, and by the time you get to be "Vyse the Legend", it really FEELS like you've become one and have earned that title.
The commandeering of the Delphinus was when i felt the game really made you feel like you'd made it. From that point on, you could stand toe-to-toe with any enemy.
The simplistic beauty in these older games is something i really miss
Intantly reminded me of Time Splitters 2 on Came Cube. I would argue games like these are the proof that graphical fidelity isn't all as important as certain people want to make you believe.
I've been looking forward to this ever since it was put up to a vote over a year ago. It's absolutely one of my favorite games of all times, very deserving of a remake/remaster. And watching it again just makes me want to play it again.
I do say, one of the minor details I love is that in combat all the characters and enemies trade and block/dodge attacks while picking moves and other characters are attacking. No one is just doing the typical RPG standing around, and that small bit of movement adds a lot to the fight.
PS: I cannot wait for the "Dance for me" special. My favorite in the game.
It's been a long time, Skies of Arcadia. The way you're saying Aika's name is how it is in the Japanese version (although going by that logic Fina's name would be pronounced with a long I sound and I don't think anyone's going to get that so it's up to you really). Shout outs to Rieko Kodama!
Oh, I see. Her name has a pronunciation similar to Aika's. Translators choice I guess. I would have gone with Faina personally, but I can see why a translator would choose Fina instead.

I've been waiting for Jon to make a series of this ages. I can only hope he puts as much ...gusto... with the voices as he does with dating sims
It wouldn't be hyperbole to say that I've played hundreds of games over the last three decades, but out of all of them I think the imagery from Skies of Arcadia lived rent free in my head the longest. The worldbuilding is incredibly unique, the characters are wonderful, and the ships and enemies are so so cool.
If Skies of Arcadia has one caveat, it's that nobody on the playground knew what I was talking about! I only ever met one other person irl who played this game and we probably talked about it for an hour right then and there.

I just Googled this out of curiosity and it seems that there's rumors from last August that a remake is being worked on
My Number One Favorite Game of All Time. Everything About it is wonderful, the story, the characters, the music, the gameplay. I just...I just wish more people could play it legally. We Need a port

I love this so much! I honestly thought I'd never see more people play this game! It's been something I've returned to year after year since I was a child. So many school nights staying up late and getting up early to play a bit before school lol. I can't wait to see more! I wish I could experience this game for the first time again.
This is also one of my favorite games of all time. So excited for this series, I am so glad to go through this game with Jon and have him introduce it to folks.
I was a junior in college when the game was released and I made the mistake of renting it (you used to rent games from stores back in the 90’s) and I lost a complete week of my life and it is probably the reason I had a fifth year of study. But I will always cherish that feverish magical first play through of this masterpiece. It was just me alone in a one bedroom apt, my Dreamcast and the adventure of a lifetime. I cannot stress enough how amazing this game was at the time. It was worth that fifth year of college. Thank you for giving it the accolades it deserves!
It is so rare, Jon, that this works out this way. But I am one of those viewers new to Skies of Arcadia. I was there with you when you finally stepped foot into the world of Fallout 1 and 2... I'd waited patiently for that. As a person who grew up on early consoles, and the first real boom of PC games... it's incredibly enjoyable to me that you can now introduce me to something new. Thank you to MATN for all of the happiness you bring.
As an aside, this is probably the only youtube channel I've watched long enough to develop something like a para-social relationship with. Not in an unhealthy way... but you guys helped me greatly during the isolation of the pandemic. I find it both odd and comforting that not only was I devastated by the loss of the fabulous Many a True Cat Tabby... but was equally overjoyed for you upon the arrival of the glorious Many a True Dog Ted.
You are people I'll never in reality have a proper conversation with... we'll never meet. But somehow, I feel a kinship I cannot quantify. To me, that is a testament to the lovely community that you have built up around yourself. It is a loving, inclusive and fun community here at MATN. I thank you greatly for providing that, and hope that you never stop doing what you are doing.

Those ghastling enemies look like they're based on cliones, a type of deep sea slug also called sea angels

I'm glad Jon touched on the boss music in this game, I loved the shifting tones of the boss battles, when you're close to victory and the music swells; its just peak 👌

Such a wave of nostalgia as soon as I heard the intro music. Loved this on the Dreamcast even with the vastly overinflated random encounter rate, been looking forward to this series for ages.

Skies of Arcadia is my favorite RPG on both the Dreamcast and Gamecube. If one was in a thrift store and saw this game and the system you would need to play it would be worth it to snag them up.
I've nvr played or seen this game in my 33 yrs but im looking forward to seeing it first while watching u enthusiastically play and explain it Jon. This gonna be great! 😁

I am 5 minutes in and I am already enjoying this so much. I can feel the love Jon has for this game, and his reading of character dialogue is amazing! I usually hate being read to, but this just feels so right!
holy shit this bring me back. me and my brother would finish school go on home and he would put this on his GameCube, and i would sit back and watch him i would'nt play it myself for a while later on an emulator (dolphin works for it) such a good time i listen to bombardment once in a while. If you've never played SoA, but Vyse and Aika give you deja vu, they both appeared as recruitable members of Squad7 in Valkyria Chronicles, another absolute masterpiece Jon should do a full playthrough of. It's odd that Jon praises Skies of Arcadia as much as he does, but doesn't play other games from the same devs, like Valkyria Chronicles, Phantasy Star, Sakura Wars. Valkyria Chronicles was directed by Shuntaro Tanaka, who was the scenario writer for this game.
I litterally bought a gamecube, years after it came out, so I could play this one game. Worth it.
For me, I did it for this and Eternal Darkness. I'd do it again for either of them if I ever get off my current game obsessions.
This is a game that I always wanted to sit down and play and just never found the time. I'm so glad that you're playing it now, Jon.
I remember commenting long ago about how you should do a run of this, and now…I’m so happy. This game was amazing on the Dreamcast (that’s where I played it). The story was amazing and the setting was thrilling.

Having played a bunch of older RPGs (Grandia, Legend of Dragoon, Trials of Mana) for the first time over the last couple of years, this looks right up my alley.
As someone who grew up playing those games too, I definitely recommend this game!! It’s a fantastic adventure story.

What a trip down memory lane this is for me. The original Dreamcast version was good, but the Gamecube remake just "blows it out of the sky". Simply Phenomenal.
I never had any gaming console. Where I grew up people either can't afford it or it was never available to buy in the first place, not when I grew up at least. Hell, my first pokemon game was pokemon raptor, a fan made game modified to be playable on PC.
Needless to say this will be my first time seeing this game, and heck outside of this channel, I never even heard of skies of Arcadia. But your preview trailer/top game of the year sold me on it. This is the kind of game I would wish I grew up with and would probably be confounded that my peer never even heard of it, leading me to think I gaslit myself into believing this game was real.
This channel makes me so happy in ways I would not otherwise be. Thanks

I loved this on the Dreamcast back in the day -- the feeling of discovery and the base and crew building mechanics really made the world feel lived in. Very psyched to see this run.

This is my all time favourite game. I picked it up one day back on the GameCube thinking it might just be a bit of fun and it quickly rocketed to my all time favourite, and years later it still holds that position.
From the Story, Characters, World building, Settings, Adventures, Quests. Just everything about this game is amazing.
And while it seems like a game that might be leaning for the more younger anime crowd it sets up within the first few minutes (as we saw this episode) with Alphonso KILLING someone in cold blood to show it's not messing around.
I've been dying to see this series ever since it won in the votes so long ago and I'm going to be watching every minute.
I think the only issue I ever had with the game was it never tells you that the longer you play the tougher bosses get, and so on my first playthrough I was trying to complete all the extra stuff at the end and ended up racking up so many hours that the final boss was impossible to beat. No issue, it just meant I could play through it all again, and I have several times.
Man, I played the demo of this game on the Dreamcast back in the day and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, despite begging my mum, I never got the full version. When I got older, I bought a Gamecube just to be able to play it.
On the one hand, it's a shame that I missed the notification for the video, but on the other hand, I can now catch up on a few episodes. I'm really looking forward to it!

My first Dreamcast game was Record of Lodoss War. This was number two, although I replayed it more on Gamecube.

What a joy it is to finally see this. I remember the first time I played this in it's entirety after trying out the demo on the dreamcast, courtesy of my younger brother. This game is one of if not the best i've played in my time. Thoroughly looking forward to your adventures through the skies Jon.
This is the moment Ive been waiting for for years. Skies is my literal favorite game of all time. I wish it was simpler to replay myself, especially in regard to Pinta’s Quest…but watching Jon express a similar level of joy is going to bring me so much joy, Im sure.

I think I'm among the many MATN fans who were too young to remember the year 2000. The GameCube/Dreamcast era of gaming is all a blur in my mind. I'm very excited to go back into the gaming past watching Jon play a game he loves.

I haven't played this game in so long, like two decades 😆 and I still have a few printed out pages of a walkthrough from the internet (back when it made sense to print out walkthroughs cause checking was so much work).
That should be a wonderful series, looking forward to it
