Skies of Arcadia - Part 2 - A Shrine Of Things To Come
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 апр 2024
- Skies of Arcadia continues, as we explore our beautiful home village, engage in some highly dubious behaviour, and head back into the skies to hunt down an unexpected treasure...
Skies of Arcadia is tragically completely unavailable to purchase on any currently existing store, and was also never released on PC. If you want to play it yourself, your options are the GameCube and Dreamcast versions, which were the only releases. Sorry.

Both Aika and Vyse are bonus characters in Valkyria Chronicles and both characters are voiced and say their own name, so I can confirm Jon is pronouncing Aika's name correctly
By implication, Jon is pronouncing Vyse's name incorrectly and you are a very kind person 🤭
I love that game
When you inevitably create a endcard containing clips from this game, you must include "One of these days, maybe, something good will happen if I light literally everything on fire" in it
I was thinking literally the same thing.
Enemy dying to a counterattack be like - it attacks the hero and Vyse versa
“This is the only time when Aika needs to fix her hair the entire game.” Damn, I need to get some of that Pirate Island hairspray. Alfonso must be jealous.
"One of these days, maybe, something good will happen if I light literally everything on fire."
-MATN 2024
Ah, 90s/early 2000s gaming, where all the good info is in the manual and the manual is also wrong. The good old days.
Mechano used to do it wrong on purpose to make you think about ways to fix and improve things.
At some point there's going to be a "In need of some good adVyse" type episode title pun and I am here for it!
Vyse, Aika, and Fina all three have names that are golden for puns:
“Vyse Principles”
“The revolution will not be teleVysed”
“Aika make you care”
“Grand Fina-le”
And a dozen more that I’m sure Jon’s thought of that I haven’t
@@queenannsrevenge100Really? Aikan't think of any off the top of my Fina. I mean, head.
@@inkyGhosty - I'm Dyne to see the rest of the series to see what he comes up with, though.
Aika...ramba.
@@S14N9LS Aika means time in Finnish
I feel like we need to have a "The Moon is responsible" counter everytime the game explicitly states or Jon implies/jokes that The Moon is to blame lol
I always remember the music transition from “You’re winning” to “Ow crap, near death” during boss fights. Heard that a little too often.
I'm going to predict that the first time we hear it will be the first fight against Piastol...
@ManyATrueNerd I have my own prediction that you will hear it against Bleigock.
@@ManyATrueNerdPiastol 😱💀
Funniest thing about seeing Jon going through the dungeon and explaining how grueling an experience it will be is that the GameCube version significantly cut down the amount of random battles. I think you get less than half what you used to get. And still, it didn't detract from the game a single bit, that's how special it was.
Haha! I bought it on the Dreamcast and can confirm the encounter rate was brutal. Sometimes every few steps. You got less EXP in the Dreamcast version too.
@@katieheys3007 On the dreamcast you could actualy "hear" the encounter being loaded on the disc too, it would make a weird noise
The counterattack seems to prevent him using Blaster. When he used Target Search, and then you attacked him, and he counterattacked, that is when he didn't use Blaster, but instead would just attack.
Got to admit, I spent so many play throughs trying out different configurations of lighting up those torches . Was years later seeing they didn’t do anything 😅
I always figured they were just there to mark where you've been already
@@inkyGhosty initially I thought the same but I noticed they only lit up when you got close, so with all the added mechanics and stuff it seemed to be a weird added point that could lead to something good 😅.
Also to be a swashbuckler, you don’t need to be a sailor. Swash - Sword, Buckle was a type of shield.. so even seasick people can be swashbuckler’s despite Arcadian prejudice 😂
Arrghhh ☠️ 🏴☠️
When my mom got me Daggerfall for my birthday in 96' I was in highschool and could not play it until the weekend. I stayed up three nights strait reading the manual from cover to cover until I was able to play on Friday after school.
I did the same with the first Baldurs Gate, the thing is back then it was a great read, I used to love it. Reading about lore and spells, looking at maps..... It was a great time!
Yet another example of Jon introducing me to a game I would have never found on my own. Thank you sir for a new weekly binge 🍻
Jon your enthusiasm for this game is infectious and I love it. 😊
ah, the 7 torches puzzle. Yea, you got to not only light all the torches in a specific order, but also discover that one secret torch in a hidden chamber. My uncle worked at Nintendo told me about this.
This is true, I am the CEO of nintendo, Mr. Bunkichi.
Holy crap, that ladder! It’s a wonder you don’t burn your stamina just climbing up the thing 😄
Aika with her hair down and that angry look, priceless. Vyse be the hero you truly are, no more creeping 😂
There is in fact one single other time we see Aika with her hair down, but we'll get there...
that was the nicest stalker I ever met! poor Gilder...
"one of these days, maybe something good will happen if I light literally everything on fire!"
Claire? Hide the matches.
Having a new episode waiting for me as soon as I get home from work is amazing
I think there's definitely some inspiration from Laputa: Castle in the Sky (the Ghibli film), and I really love that. It has the same kind of sentiment as well as aesthetic similarities.
My headcannon is that fina comea from the moon qnd something up there goes wrong/went wrong.
I have never heard of or played this game, this is just me listening to johns advice, if you dont know about it, its the moon.
She has a strong "moon princess" vibe
oh so loppers are this game’s metal slimes!
I always liked this game and its definitely overlooked, and I always appreciate seeing more people talk about it.
One of my favourite games of all time is Final Fantasy 9. Getting such vibes from this series here!
MATN "...probably the Moon did it." merch when?
yes
A very minor thing, but can you let the "correct dialog choice" sound effect play out, please? If it's under the commentary, it's just such a satisfying jingle.
Also suggestion, for some reason watching the magic exp tick down is also very satisfying and also let's us know how the magic build is progressing combat by combat. There's going to be an eventuality where the sky high encounter rate will just have them cut out but maybe an endslate of all the numbers ticking down? I'm grasping on that one admittedly.
As someone vicariously living nostalgia through this LP, I'm loving it so far. Looking forward to Monday!
Such an interesting game, didn't expect to get so hooked
Still one of the best RPGs of all times.
I hadn't heard of this game until your 50 favorite games list. I can't believe it flew under my radar. This is exactly the type of fun, wholesome game I like to play. Thanks for exposing me to it! ❤
I wonder if Jon has heard of Dark Cloud
Huzzah for more Skies of Arcadia. Perfect for listening to at work
"probably the moons did it" that sums up the whole game basically lol
Good ol nostalgia :) I hope the series continues till the end.
Galcian: By the way what do you think of my moustache Ramirez? And Think cafefuly on your answer, we are thousands of feet in the air.
Lovely! We’re rapidly coming to the end of my personal experience in this game and I’m so excited to see more
13:30 Fina using Vyse's bed
I didn't know that etiquette was still used. I learned it and have implemented it myself, I'm just surprised that Jon brought it up like this.
This is a situation where the game shows very deeply what market it was made for; the two downstairs beds are both for the parents (each even has just one pillow) so that nothing adult is even implied, and meanwhile no guest bed needs to be shown because everyone in Japan would assume the guest 'bed' is a set of really heavy blankets that were rolled back up into the closet before breakfast.
love that ghibli made castle in the sky a game
Had never seen this game, loving it so far. One thing that reminds me of another game is the Spirit system reminds me of Legend of Legaia, where you used the bar to input combos.
Loving this series so far! I can't wait to see more.
I'm so happy this is the newest series. This is gonna be quite the ride.
It's a shame that we won't get to see Pinta's quest in this series. Dreamcast was too ahead of its time.
I remember spending way too long on Pinta's quest and raising Sonic Chao. Ah the VMU was something!
I am absolutely loving this. Can't wait for the next part
I don't wn't to be the guy you said not to be in the last video: but; this is one of my favorite rpg's. I had it on both systems but loving it more in HD.. It builds; it has archs and I cant wait
I always grinded on Shine Island untill I get a Throwing Blade (weapon for Aika) to drop from a Grounder. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it actually takes quite a while.
Yeah, Loopers of all colors are easily defeated by special physical attacks, like Vyses Cutlass Fury, if they don't run away. They give good EXP and loot. I found it always so frustrating if they run away, especially when they used an attack first, then evade and then run away.
I've been waiting all day for this! I can see this being my new addiction, it's buckets of nonsense and Jon is the perfect person to take us on this journey!
You get to see Aika with her hair down later in a cutscene Jon.
Loving this series!
Can't believe I didn't know this game existed. Thanks Jon
Yaaay! More adventures with Jon! :)
Perfect timing! Just got home from work and can kick back to enjoy MATN shenanigans!
I never played this game, but somehow it still feels nostalgic
Oh Aika gets the kill
I think in all the times I’ve played aika ALWAYS gets the most kills
Yes! Been waiting all day for this!! Episode one was awesome, and im hooked!!!
Been looking forward to this, Jons enthusiasm makes these videos so fun!
ah this game is just pure chill i love it
I love this game, but Jon, please at some point in your own time check out Grandia 1, same lovely atmosphere, and you get to enjoy that dinner with your Mum!
Edit: IIRC I believe the lanterns were necessary for a certain other kinda spoliery dungeon
I laughed at the games opening equipment of pot lids and wooden swords. So reminiscent of children on adventures. Always intended to pick up number 2.
You ever try Alundra? 1 was great, Shane what they did to 2 😢.
@@Docktavion Grandia 2 was still very good, gameplay was somewhat improved, but the unique tone and story took a big hit. The series went more towards the gameplay, abandoning story as time went on. Never got round to Alundra though.
@@bluemujika if you get the chance definitely check the game out in person or a play through. I will definitely either try to buy a copy or catch a play through then.
Think biggest issue I had with Alundra 2 was a drastic change in graphics and controls. Made it “unplayable”. Similarly situations to the broken sword games.
Definitely another classic RPG with an epic scale!
Pow is the best boy
Perfect timing.
This game reminds me so much of one of my favorite stories, one full of floating islands, magic and airships. If the islands in the game start falling out of the sky....
The edge chronicles?
Jon's love of this early section is making me think he would love the start of Kingdom Hearts 2. Just hanging out watching the sunset with your buds.
I'd have assumed that the light thingies would do what the alarm does in the first dungeon and stop random encounters
I've never played the game though
Full playthrough pls!
Make full series please!!
If i may say you called your place pirate island .... Thats a big hint to were to find you
Vyse holding one cutlass like a tonfa to guard with it kind of hurts my brain to look at...at least he attacks with the other one.
Good lord, Aika has huge hands!
Couldn't we sail away home to heal up from this place
Since it is a Japanese rpg, are the ticks and circles in reverse because Japanese mark tests and exams the other way around?
About the mystery lights in the Shrine island, are you supposed to return there with Fina and see if she does anything with the lights on?
Yeah baby!
That damage graph is incorrected even the corrected version, Each value should the same on each side of the diagonal.
Thank you.
Was Aika seeing what she looked like with Fina’s hairstyle?
I'm wondering if this will be a pattern...plot hole/mechanic weirdness? Blame the moon! 😂
Looper is the Golden Hands from Persona 4
The lights are just..... lights
pretty important
The current gen version of this game would have overwhelming graphics. I miss the physical booklets. The Sims and those Harry Potter games were great, also I love when books and games come with a copy of the Fantasy Map.
Commenting to boost the algorithm.
SKIES!!!
I might be wrong, but I think you can one shot the loopers with alpha storm
_comment for the algorithm_
So you can accidentally skip moon stones by not talking to the right person at the right time, it seems? Noted.
Also, I have to admit I'd be struggling to save up moonberries; not least because Cutlass Fury seems *expensive*, I'd want to see if Vyse gets a cheaper option for normal fights.
Do you think Jon would be more upset if they had a lighthouse they destroyed?
Jon, play Dink Smallwood
I bought this game used with no manual.
Only problem with this is you cannot buy the hardware or software at a reasonable price or with a warranty.
2:19 oh goodness what happened to Sonic?
This game might be from 1987 but at least it looks better than Fallout 3.
you skipped my fav optional scene of Vyse being a dick to his dad tho... : [
Wait - who attacked the island? Valuan Empire or Galcian Empire?
Nevermind, "Galcian Flagship" refers to the emperor Galcian of Valuan Empire. I misunderstood
Am I the only one who thinks the theme song is really close to TinTin?
I wonder if Jon would like Valkyria chronicles since it and Skies of Arcadia have the same director, and Vyse, Aika, and Fina even have cameos in that you can recruit soldiers with their names and that look like them. Not connected to this game besides that, since it takes place in fantasy WW1 Europe where the country you play as is a mix of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Poland. Defending against an Empire that is both Germany AND Russia, so needless to say you're the underdogs
Ah yes, "Nature Lover vs The Empire" is a wonderful game. Got to have one of the most unique main characters I have ever come across.
@@bobbys332 Himbo genius strategist that just wants the war to end so he can draw fish
Sure it came after, but if Jon gushes this much over this title, he would adore the Legend of Heroes series, especially the Sky Trilogy.
If he went in blind with the exception of a list of main and hidden quests, so he doesn't miss anything, and maybe took the time to speak to every NPC at every story transition (the only way to play the series, IMO), he'd fall in love with Estelle and co, too.
Haha he would never complete the games within a reasonable time frame, never mind him trying to find all the books and newspapers. Some of those interactions are on the point of obnoxious 😅.
I did enjoy the ones I played. One thou I could not get behind (in side a weird memory realm, opening up doors and such to retrieve characters from memories etc. I found it so boring and repetitive). Always intended to pick up the rest and try them out.
Got to admit I got confused with collecting the games between the trails games and the tales games 🤣
To the skiesssssssss!!!!! We lootin and tootin with this one.
What? What do you mean the Blue Rogue don't do that?
Good show, Jon the Unimpressive :D
😊
[Video spoilers, you have been warned]
You know, I did wonder while we were exploring how long it was going to take for the peaceful hometown of our hero to get destroyed, but I wasn't expecting the answer to be "about 5 seconds from now".
Purple for ice magic. That is very non-standard. Mostly in games purple is for lightning, blue for ice.
But if lightning is yellow, and blue is (presumably) water, what other colour would ice be?
(I´m mostly used to lightning being yellow.)
@@johnyshadow I find it kind of unusual to have both ice and water magic as separate. They kind of fill the same role elementally.
Ice could be white.
@@Dead-EyeJuncan Hmm, white is good for ice, if you´re not dealing with any holy/light elements.
And yeah, often water and ice are under the same category, but I don´t think it´s that uncommon for them to be separate.
It´s a similar situation as putting air and lightning together.
(Though some games also use blue/water for healing/buff spells. And have no green/nature, or use green for air/wind.
It can be a big mess.)
So this is the game Soectrobes copied, good game if you haven't played it.
