    Thanks for the review man. I used the 35mm version and even though these new generation Samyang/Rokinon lenses are more budget friendly, in the back of my mind I still would want to have a native Sony, Sigma or the Tamron lens.
    The 35mm was also soft but for weddings it actually works and has a certain dreamy soft look to it.
    I returned the one I had and now waiting for the Sony version 😀

    Not sure why poor autofocus happened to you but this lens works like a charm when updated to the latest firmware.

    Happy to see this since there aren’t many recent reviews out there. I just received this lens the other day and agree with everything you said.
    Did the focus ever freeze up on you? In addition to being slow, it has just stopped working for me and it is somewhat of a hassle to start up again.
    I haven’t updated to the most recent firmware, but from reading comments about prior upgrades it doesn’t sound too promising.

    Happy owner of the Zeiss 50 1.4 and while expensive and as you pointed out, heavy, it's just something about it. I mean I could definitely just be dreaming up the superlatives for it to try to justify the hefty price for myself, but it just gives me that extra feeling and its been more or less glued on my camera since I got it.
    The Samyang looks pretty good once you stop it down though.

    Good video! I like your style :) With that said sharpness is only one aspect of a lens. Bokeh, color, contrast and the overall look it gets is what I look for. For example I use a voigtländer 35 1.4 nokton and the imgaes it puts out is beautiful but its realy soft in the corners at pretty much any aperture. Also I had a samyang 14mm 2.8 long time ago. It was sharp! But I sold it since the images had weird colors in some light.

  • @raalaa121
    @raalaa121 4 года назад +5

    People are getting confused about wanting "sharp" lenses. These inexpensive (in comparison to native lenses) Samyang F1.4 50mm's are beauty lenses in my opinion. Perfect for close ups of the brides face. It won't pick up acne, spots, craters in the skin. We keep going on about sharp lenses. I much prefer a softer flattering look as that's all I will be using the 50mm for ... portraits.

    As a proud owner of the Zeiss 55mm 1.8, I’d recommend saving up and going for it instead. It was the first lens I bought for Sony mirrorless and it has rarely left my camera bag. This Samyang looks like a good, cheaper alternative, but I’m still not swayed.

    • @PeterLindgren1

    • @cballspradley
      @cballspradley 5 лет назад

      It also has a quality that different people find with different lenses. To me the 55 has some quality that makes me want to go out and use it. It makes me want to pick up my camera more. If you can find a lens, no matter what kind, that has this quality for you, GET IT!!! You’re going to be producing more content and that alone is worth it.

    Sounds like this lens compares more with the Sony 50 f1.8. The Sony being cheaper seems like a better deal. I have the 55 f1.8 so I will be sticking with that small little wonder. A lot of people seem to love these Samyang lenses. Personally I would stick with Sony, Zeiss, Sigma or Tamron glass. Dive deep into the reviews on B&H and quality control issues are very much a problem with Samyang. Great video as usual. Please don’t give up your vloging job, I don’t think modeling is your thing.

    Hejsan Peter. Först och främst tusen tack för denna video. Jag har aldrig hållt på med kameror. Men köpte mig en Sony a6000 med starter kit. Problemet är att jag vill få den dära bookeh, suddiga bakgrunden vilket jag har svårt med kit lens. Mitt mål är att ta hel kropps bild på mina outfits. Vill göra lite proffsiga bilder till Instagram. Ville satsa på Sony 30mm f1.4 men tycker den är lite dyr för 3.5k men finns en Samyang 50mm 1.4 för ca 1.5k som jag kanske kan köpa. Skulle du rekommendera denna lens till mina mål? Tack på förhand och ha en bra helg.

    Having had this lens for one & a half years & it has been my go to lens over that period both on my a6500 then a7riii ..Ive had a love hate relationship with it .. the pros are its price , the beautiful rendering & bokeh , the cons its AF (this was Samyang's first AF lens for Sony ) especially the eye AF , although with lens updates & now Sony 3.00/01 update on my a7riii its reasonable also its a little soft . but overall a great 50mm F1.4 & you can pick one up so cheap . now I stopped using this 6 weeks ago as I bought the Samyang 45mm F1.8 ..and that is a awesome ..so I might even sell my 50mm samyang now . you should try & get a copy of the Samyang 45mm for review Peter... its the new kid on the block...

    For me..buy the f1.4....because I want to used it in that aperture..rarely.
    Thats mean I'm not gonna buy & used my f1.4 lens at f2.8...for more sharp or CA reason..
    So thats why I'm gonna stay with my Zeiss 55 f1.8 ZA...instead.😘

    Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I did not buy this lens because I thought it was terrible. I have the Samyang 35mm F1.4 AF and 85mm F1.4 AF and they are awesome for stills. I bought the Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA lens and I paid £959 for this. This is awesome 50mm lens. Yes it is heavy but the images are crushing.

    This, in my opinion, is the worst of the 1.4 samyang lenses, but its actually pretty good! These samyang lenses are really impressive! They perform very comparably to their sony and other competitors mostly its the af on this one that holds it back, but on the others its very comparable with the native glass
    This lense (according to other vids ive watched) works well for video if you adjust the focus settings and make it smoother

    • @PeterLindgren1
      @PeterLindgren1  5 лет назад

      I'd say so too. But it still works!
      It does not work well for video compared to a native lens. It is just waaaay to unreliable!

      1k is steep man but you will be so happy with the zeiss 55mm f1.8. I don’t like samyang for their unreliable auto focus and that focus motor noise is going to kill you! Trust me I returned my Samyang and opted for the 55mm and no regrets just a joy to shoot with

      Lonely Knights I bet it is mate. Haven’t seen a single negative review on that little baby thus far. Was really hoping the far cheaper 50mm f1.8 would cut it but the consensus is that it focus hunts a lot and I can’t have that on video. Seems I’ll have to start saving for that Zeiss 😛

    Samyang released the AF 85mm f1.4 last, so I think it's an indicator of things to come. The AF 35mm and AF 50mm were earlier roll-outs. I own quite a number of Samyang lenses for Canon EF and Micro 4/3, and they are very good value products (especially for those that are running bodies that aren't very pixel-dense). I hope they release AF variants of their XP lenses, as those are their best photography lenses (optically). They are comparable to Sigma Art lenses in resolution, but they are much heavier than their current Samyang AF models.
