I have this lens and use it for video a lot. I do not have problems with autofocus like you stated you do. Maybe your settings need to be changed in the menu. I almost always shoot in 4K at 24fps and like you said, in crop mode it’s like have two lenses in one. By shooting in 4K and editing on a 1080p timeline, I can zoom in or out and people would never know the video was shot with a fixed focal length lens. I have actually shot portraits with this lens. In the past I always used nothing wider than a 50mm and most of the time a 85mm or longer. I recently shot a video and photos exclusively with this lens at the State Fair of Texas and found that if you are in crop mode in video and you change to shooting photos, the camera stays in crop mode. I shot over 100 photos in crop mode which reduced the resolution to around 10mp. It really didn’t matter though because most all of my work is presented only on Instagram and 10mp is more than enough.
I bought this lens 4 months ago, never left my camera since then, is really versatile, good for portrait, landscape, indoor shot, night shooting and even in video, is a must have lens! Good review Peter Lindgren, big fan, keep up with the good work 👌🏽

In my opinion, 18 batis for video and 24 sigma for stills, price is almost same...
I bought this lens a few weeks ago and I love it. Paired with my A7SII for filming weddings, it's perfect for details and open dancefloor footage at the reception.

24mm is a bit wide for me. I find myself using it in crop mode more than not. But I must say: it’s Sony #1 best lens. You can’t fault it. It ticks every box - built quality, size/weight, focus ring smoothiness, focus switch and button, fast 1.4, and it’s even reasonably priced for a premium lens. Hi Peter! First, I would like you to thank you for all your work. You're a great source of both information and inspiration. Please, I would need you to help clarify something for me. I'm about to purchase my first camera - an A7III but I'm not sure which lense to buy with it. In a previous video you don't seem to be as passionate about the 24MM 1.4 GM as you are in this one? I'm a bit confused. Would you recommend this lense, the 16-35MM F4 or the 28-75MM 2.8? My budget will only allow me to buy one lense at this time so I would really appreciate one that can suit my overall needs. I will use my camera for both photos and videos in many different settings. Portraits, product photos, B-rolls, action sports, martial arts, nature, architecture, club/parties, food, vlogging etc. I realize this is basically everything you can do with a camera and that one lense won't be perfect for all of it, but I'f you could help me choose a winner overall lense, I'd be super grateful. Thanks again! /Adam
@@PeterLindgren1 i have never realized how much of a difference a f1.4 would make. It's insane lowlight clarity and looks so good when filming in 4k. I love it.

Peter Lindgren that is the one I have Z6 for video is awesome and use the Z7 for sport and wildlife photography. I would like to use Sony cameras one day to see how good can be the AF eye focus lol I hear awesome stuff about Sony cameras 👍🏼
why doesn‘t stay the F Stop at 1.4 if you use the Crop-Mode on Mirrorless Cameras. You were mentioning that if you use it on this lense it goes from 24mm 1.4 to 35mm (36) at 2.0 Ist always like that. Is there a formula to use? What would the F-Stop be if I use 85mm 1.8 to crop to 127mm Thanks a lot!
Hello Peter, can I have quick question? I wear glasses too and I can't figure out how to reduce the reflection when I want to make videos of myself, I guess its about right lighting in room, but I still don't know how and I think you did it well. I didn't put any video online because of this :)
I'm not a big fan of 24mm because of the way that it deforms the subjects and shooting on the edge of f/1.4 I'm not sure if you are getting the whole sharpness potential of your lens - if you care about it. In the other hand, 85 and 100mm lens are just amazing lens. My favorite ones.
Nice review, but I have a question if you don't mind about the aperture in super 35 mode. Are you sure that the aperture becomes f2.0? I thought that in a full frame camera it remains the same even when cropped in (in this case f1.4). Please advise. Thanks
How bad is the autofocus in video in this lens?? Can you make a video about focusing speeds of various lenses etc.. I’m about to pull the trigger and get one... by the way love your videos mate..
It's not BAD bad, but it does hunt at times when recording talking head videos, but other than that it works good. You'll definitely be satisfied with it! Thanks for being here 🙌
I was thinking about it but ended up buying new Sony 35 1.8 on eBay promotion for about £470 24mm is slightly to wide for me for normal shooting and not wide enough for ultra wide needs. But lens looks cool.
You should make a video how you grow so fast, it’s incredible. I’m struggling with the 24 f1.4 GM and 35mm f1.2 art. I know they are way different but still.
I'll try to see if I can do a really in depth video on it! This is so far the best lena I've tried/reviewed. I love it in every way except for AF in video mode.
Would you say this is a good lens for walking around, street photography? Oh, and it looks like you moved the aperture light, to 45° on you right side? Nice. Looks a lot cleaner.
It's getting a cropped field of view so if you wanna frame the same shots you have to move back if you're in super 35. I have tried a 35 and also have the 35mm focal length on my zoom, but i almost always go for the 24mm whenever i can because i like that focal length better!
Peter Lindgren so if it’s only framed then it’s like a digital kind of zoom with lower quality right? I checked it yesterday and the sharpness is ey much more better on the 35 than on 24 cropped...
@@kfzmonnin when you're shooting video there's no difference in the sharpness if you shoot in super 35 or not! For photos it's always gonna be a loss in resolution if you shoot in super 35 mode :)
That price tag is a little too steep for me. I've set my eyes on the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art for half the money. It doesn't seem to be too shabby either. By the way... I love that you leave your little slips of the tongue in instead of editing them out, like most people do. :)
What is the equivalent focal length to a 24mm full frame on a APSC-body? Currently looking at buying a new lens for my A6000. The focusing edit was hilarious btw!

Peter Lindgren that is the one I have Z6 for video is awesome and use the Z7 for sport and wildlife photography. I would like to use Sony cameras one day to see how good can be the AF eye focus lol I hear awesome stuff about Sony cameras 👍🏼
i love ur color grade in photos and videos . please share how ti get these color plzzzzzzz
I have shared my LUT on my website. Link in the description!
you are so cool brother!!! congratulation on 60k subs!!!!
why doesn‘t stay the F Stop at 1.4 if you use the Crop-Mode on Mirrorless Cameras.
You were mentioning that if you use it on this lense it goes from 24mm 1.4 to 35mm (36) at 2.0
Ist always like that.
Is there a formula to use?
What would the F-Stop be if I use 85mm 1.8 to crop to 127mm
Thanks a lot!
70.1 k subs now!! Keep going!!
Sjukt att jag äntligen hittat den svenska Peter Mckinnon!!
Haha, kommer få leva med den jämförelsen tills jag dör :D
Hello Peter, what do you think about the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 lens?
Yes this looks likes a great lense. Loved those shots at the start
Its sure is! Thank you 🙌
I might buy 70-200 f4 as my telephoto lens to replace my 70-300 tamron lens f mount
Nice review, but I have a question if you don't mind about the aperture in super 35 mode. Are you sure that the aperture becomes f2.0? I thought that in a full frame camera it remains the same even when cropped in (in this case f1.4). Please advise. Thanks
Thank you very much, Peter! You just save part my money :)
Thanks for being here 🙌
Peter Lindgren Keep posting these amazing videos. Thanx for the answer..
I was thinking about it but ended up buying new Sony 35 1.8 on eBay promotion for about £470 24mm is slightly to wide for me for normal shooting and not wide enough for ultra wide needs. But lens looks cool.
I've heard it's an awesome lens as well!
GM no brainer
I need to try out a Sony system soon... I only have the one Canon RF lens at the moment but “I think I like it”! 24-105mm F4 L IS USM
Excellent 👍, thanks for sharing 👍👍
I really want this lens but as a wedding filmmaker I think the Tamron 28-75 would be more practical
The tamron is covering more areas of use for sure. But if you ever need a good prime, this is the one!
Hey Peter ! Thanks for the video :) If you could only have one lens, would it be this one or the 16-35 F4? :) Cheers !
Ouff... Tough question... I think i have to say 24 GM for Photos, 16-35 for videos!
I have the Sony 2470 2.8 and the 85. 1.8 ...is this also a good combo for the A73 ? Or is the better Option to buy this 24mm Lens ?
I'd say if you already have the 24-70 2.8 you don't need to get this lens!
Love my 24 1.4 GM
My favourite lens 85gmastr 1.4
Would you say this is a good lens for walking around, street photography?
Oh, and it looks like you moved the aperture light, to 45° on you right side? Nice. Looks a lot cleaner.
Oh totally! It's great for landscapes, cities, street, architecture, you name it!
Yep, mainly moved the camera though, but testing things out :D
Hi why is it F2.0 in crop? And is it really the same like a real Sony 35mm f1.8f for example? I got both to test and I struggle which to keep....
Peter Lindgren okay but why is there no difference in video? And when do you use your 35? Like in which situation? Thanks for your help :)
That price tag is a little too steep for me. I've set my eyes on the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art for half the money. It doesn't seem to be too shabby either. By the way... I love that you leave your little slips of the tongue in instead of editing them out, like most people do. :)
You said Super 35 mode makes this lens a 35mm f/2.0 lens. Why did you loose a whole f stop? Surely it’s still f/1.4?
But is it the much money worth it? Or should we also go with a Sigma 24mm 1.4?
Would the Sigma 16mm, F1.4 on a A6400 give the same picture size due to cropping?
Yes.
Hello, im from indonesia, mybe only me from Indonesia will watch your video... mybe hahahahaha Goodluck and congrats 60k subs!
Hello Indonesia! Would love to visit some day!
What is the equivalent focal length to a 24mm full frame on a APSC-body? Currently looking at buying a new lens for my A6000. The focusing edit was hilarious btw!
That would be 35mm!
Haha, glad you liked it :D
The Sigma 16mm will give you a 24mm equivalent
I have the Tamron 17-28mm and I'm still tempted.. probably just getting greedy now lol
If you have a 24-70 GM F 2.8, is it better to buy the 24 GM or the 85 GM? I was thinking 85 since the reach of 24-70 doesnt hit that focal range
Yeah, I'd go for the 85mm. As you said you already have the 24mm covered!
@@PeterLindgren1 thanks for the quick reply! 😁 you are the 2nd or 3rd youtuber I've seen that says the 24mm is the MUST have, so I'll definitely consider it in the future. Thanks for putting the video together!
1st comment from India....
India represent!
@@PeterLindgren1 🤞🇮🇳💕😎
I don't understand why you don't get good video on the 24mm G master? Is something wrong with your lens that's causing it to focus hunt so frequently?
What about must have lens for CROP?
Look and think before opening the shutter. The heart and mind are the true lens of the camera.✌💕🎥🎬
I got the Sigma 24/1.4 ... But that one is so damn heavy so i got the 16-35/4 mounted on my camera most of the time..
That's the downside with sigma, they're heavy as hell!
This one is light, small and really damn good!
Can't decide between 16-35mm gm and this! Help! I wanna make videos, street photography, travel and maybe vlogs but i don't know if 24mm will be not wide enough in the long run! Any advice?
For vlogs you should probably go for the 16-35 man!
Glad I got mines, this lens in high demand... so much so, the resell value is about a few hundred bucks extra.
I didn't realise it was stil on back order in a lot of places! Glad you got one :D
