Now I am feeling that I am not using my 24 GM enough- gorgeous shots, Jake! I do love mine for low light street photography and I love how close it can focus.
Can't wait for your review of the 20mm. I love mine and think that even though it's expensive, it's so versatile on both crop-sensor and full frame that it might just be the best value in lenses for the Sony ecosystem.
Thanks Mine should arrive this week so I'm excited to have one (vs renting one occasionally) I think the 20mm might be right for most people but yeah either one of these is a great lens
@@JakeSloan Last year I was doing a collaborative review with Sony Vietnam, and they let me use the Sony a7S3 along with the 24 mm GM. Got some really good results with it, but when I eventually bought my own, I ended up with the 14 - 24 sigma because it was more practical for my uses (vlogging)
With better performing lenses like with the 35mm GM, is the 24 GM still justifiable of a purchase? As much as I've adored both with the short time frame I've had them, I'm not entirely certain whether I should go for the 24 or 35 (focal length preference aside)
Oh man the 35 is amazing as well for me the 24 is better because I do hand hold and film myself for videos. 35 is just too tight to do that. I think if I didn’t do that and wasn’t doing as much landscape work as I do I would get the 35…

Stunning imagery Jake - a quick question if I may. You only have the money $$$ for one camera which one do you pick SONY A7IV or Sony A7SIII and why? Thanks Jake - so frustrating that my trip to Alaska got cancelled last year due to Covid!
Oh man I know. I was really hoping you would get to come up! I think for both video and photo work the A7IV is the best choice. The place the A7sIII would be a better choice would be if you do a lot of very low light stuff and photo work is secondary not say 50/50 with video if that makes sense
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake - hope I get to catch one of your 'lives' again soon. Maybe sell some of my adventure gear and aim for an Alpha 1? Stay safe and keeping having fun.
I love the tamron and use it quite a bit. It’s great and very versatile. Works well in low light. And the image quality is great. The 24mm works well in super low light and the image quality is spectacular. I did a review of the tamron and a test of it for astro in two videos on my channel.
Love the photos 👏 just wondering if did you use this lens on APSC mode?? As I’m thinking to buy this lens and use it with my a7iv on APSC so I get a 36mm as well but I’m not sure about the quality🤔
I loved this lens but traded it out for the 20mm f1.8. I found with aurora and landscape that I just wanted it a little wider than 24mm. If I could have afforded to keep both I would have. :-) Thanks for the update /content.
Interesting timing. I have been looking seriously at the Viltrox 24mm f/1.8 because of the lower price (of course), but also the reduced focus breathing for video. Curious if you ever tried the Viltrox or anyone else's thoughts.
I have in fact I did a review of it and did a fair amount of comparisons with the 24gm! You can watch that here: ruclips.net/video/JKGAUXQ1FEk/видео.html
I have the viltrox coming tomorrow but I just got the Samyang 24 1.8. Its seriously just as good as the gm with some additional positives such as lighter weight, minimum focusing distance, less expensive etc.
Always tempted to get the lens but I got already the 20 1.8 and the 24-105. my next lens will be a 35 or 50 prime. also thinking to get a 85 but I can similar shots at 105 f4 . Always hard decisions but your videos are helpful :)
I think if you have the 20mm you are probably good to go I just picked one of those up. I think the 35 or the 50 would be the way to go. Personally I'd lean to the 50 but I think it's highly specific to what you shoot a lot of. Cheers!!
Have an 2.8 zoom trio, bought the Sigma 85 1.4 Art and loved it for family photos but now with the 24 1.4 dn ART might have to try a wide prime too. Thanks for the examples so I can imagine a use case.
I got a killer deal on the Sony 24mm GM open box from adorama for $1099 full manufacturers warranty 2. It was brand new in the box and is a beast with my Sony A7 IV. I should have gotten one when I first bought the camera!
Great review, I am curious though... how close were you to the shot of the helicopter? Lol. Isit a major crop in or something as I imagine to create that shot would require you to be very close for it not to look tiny considering the distance to subject on a 24mm is distorted
How did the a9ii perform with this lens? I shoot mostly wildlife, especially birds, and sports. I would like to be able to use this lens and the a9ii for landscapes as well. Don’t want to buy an a1 for just that.
I love this lens! For sure my favorite! I finally was able to get one this past year…..for a steal of course lol 😂 Did you switch over to the Sony 20mm and away from the 17-28mm? Sony a7siii needs to have focus breathing compensation!!!!! I remember when you bought that lens from Ken lol
I have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, it is a great Lens and the best 24mm you can get, but I do not need aperture 1.4, so I wish for a lighter and more compact Lens, fx if Voigtländer made a APO-Lanthar 24mm 2.0 Lens or if Sony makes a new high end "GMC"-series of Lenses, like Sony 24mm 2.0 "GMC" that have the highest possible optical quality without the need of software to perform.
Should I go for the 24mm f 1.4 or should I go for the 20mm f 1.8. I'm cheap and I am curious to know if the 24mm f 1.4 is worth the extra 1000 dollars over the f 1.8 lens .
I wish sony do update on other models with fb compensation because I don't want to buy any of their primes due to that reason. Sony 35 1.8 is not enough when we talk about primes
Hi Jake, this video was very very helpful. Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 is my main lens and I am looking to add an astro/landscape lens, and if you could have one lens, would you choose the 24GM or the Tamron 17-28? From my understand 24 GM is a “niche” but provides a “wow” factor, where as the 17-28 is soso but is versatile.
I did a video about astro with the 17-28 here: ruclips.net/video/ElbyOSClk0o/видео.html it’s pretty good but the 24 GM is just a beast for astro. The 20mm G isn’t bad either. Honestly I think you’d be pretty happy with any of them. FYI the primes are considerably sharper than the tamron which is quite sharp already.
Good enthusiastic review delivered in fast paced manner, but how about using facts rather than say "it's really light" say "at under 1 pound, 445 grams to be exact, it's really light." Viewers would find that more helpful, I believe.
@@JakeSloan I've been searching online and seems that most people have the same problem. Meanwhile I found out that the lens doesn't make any noise in my older a7. But on my a7RII it's terrible.
