      I only want this lens for photos. Thank you for making this video. I was making myself crazy debating whether or not to buy this or the Sony. Since I only want it for photos (video performance is bad), YOU saved me a LOT of money!! Thanks, Pete!

    I have this lens. Couple of things to point out: the casing is plastic not metal-a really tough plastic that looks metal but is still plastic. Also, once you load the v3 firmware, autofocus is amazing in both stills and video.

      "The aluminum body, designed with precision by mechanical engineering specialists, has only three spaces in its basic design. Weather sealing covers even these small spaces to effectively protect the lens from dust and rain. This protective design enables users to capture the moment outdoors in any environment, providing the dependability you need to keep shooting."

      How do you update the firmware

    • @JB_Hobbies
      @JB_Hobbies 3 года назад +15

      @@cubstr7111 Oh wow, I missed a lot of these comments. Firmware update is via the usb dock, which is sold separately. Some retailers bundle it, though. I got mine from Adorama, and they have a sku with bundled dock for the same price as the lens by itself. Otherwise, I think the dock is $50. As for other comments. Autofocus in low light works fine. The autofocus on this lens isn't quite at the same level as Sony's high-end lenses, but it is pretty good and does not appear to degrade with normal loss of light. I have had no issues focusing the lens at golden hour or even at blue hour. You might have some slight misses where the eye is not in perfect focus, but that's more of a 1.4 issue than anything else. Skin is rendered just fine. Overall rendering from this lens is a little warm when shooting on auto white balance. As far as aluminum goes, I guess I was wrong. It feels and sounds like plastic, but hey, if Samyang says its aluminum, then I guess that's what it is.

    Sold my 85mm 1.8 sony for this lens and Im very happy with it. Creamier bokeh and AF is excellent. The only downside is the color is slighty warmer so you get a yellow tint in your pics with the lens but you can change that in post.

    Thanks for the review. I have been enjoying this lens since it came out. I use it purely for stills so I can't comment on video. Make sure you update the firmware to version 3 or above (v4 is out at the time of this comment) for better low light performance. I use it mainly at f1.4, 5.6 and 8 and it is very sharp wide open in the center. Love the rendering and contrast too. For better Bokeh, make sure to turn OFF e-front curtain shutter (EFCS) on the A7III/A7RIII, noticeable difference when shooting at high shutter speeds.

  • @ПітерАндрійХенфілдКолісник

    Hello from Kyiv. Good review. I totally agree with you . For stills this lens is as good as the Sony GM (Well done Samyang) . This lens for its price point is excellent value and delivers. Bokeh is subjective with every lens. I think the bokeh is excellent with the Samyang 85mm as I do with the Tamron 28 to 75mm. Some people think that the bokeh on the Tamron is busy and swirly but I like it. Bokeh is a personal thing to each individual. Now to video. Yes it is terrible but I think it can be fixed with a software/firmware update but let us be honest and ask the question. How many people use an 85mm for videos? In general RUclipsrs and Vloggers prefer lenses less than 35mm. 85mm is classed as a telephoto prime. So I do not think that not being a great lens for video is a deal breaker. For stills it is punching above its class. This lens is aimed at portrait shooters and weddings. As with the 35mm these problems can be fixed with software and Samyang has stated they are working on this and will be ongoing. They have a 50mm F1.4 but my advice is stay well clear. No software will fix the problems with that lens only a complete redesign and rebuild so do not even bother with a review you will be wasting your time. All I can say is that every time Samyang bring out a new lens for the Sony FE system they just get better and better. Same as Tamron ( Sony owns part of Tamron by the way) they just get better and I am waiting to see how the new 17 to 28mm will perform. Tamron has also registered a patent for a 70 to 200mm and a 100 to 600 for the Sony FE system. When these will be launched is any ones guess but I hope soon because I want to test the 70 to 200 (perhaps it will be 75 to 200) against the Sony GM 70 to 200. Nice review and very entertaining.

    I bought the Manual 85 MM F1.4 and it was a great price however I decided to return it and get the Autofocus for one of my Sony A3000 because I just realized that it would be better for me. The Manual one is a great quality so I have to assume this one will be as well. I don't do video with these cameras, strictly portrait photography so I am sure it will be great after your review.

    Those saying it's plastic, it's not:

    Just got my Samyang 85 about a week and just it yesterday in my wedding shoot yesterday, and what I see from the first results is great. I went for this one over the GM because of price and weight. I don’t need the buttons and rings on my lens and other things to accidentally fiddle with, so I like my lenses clean. I don’t do video either, so that’s not an issue for me, but I think the facial and eye detection is a bit weak in lower light situation as in a church, and when shooting into the sun. Otherwise I have fallen in love with it and can’t wait to shoot more. Hilsen en norrbagge 😉 og en ny sub 👌🏻👍🏻

      I don’t discredit what peter is saying cause that would be a great set up. The 35/85 will probably serve you better though. I have found that I am usually 40mm or below or 75 on the long end. Most people usually don’t shot at the between focus but like the ease of not moving.

      Peter Lindgren I was thinking from the event/wedding point of view. The lower f stop works in darker places. You would have a lens on both cameras. 35/85, two zooms, or a combination of both. That way you don’t miss a shot. Outside of that I am shooting on one body.

      Not stupid at all! Well yeah, it does give you a really nice looking background compression that will give your videos a more professional looking result. And it's also good if you need a bit of reach in your videos! I'm shooting a lot of b roll using my Batis 85 lens :)

    Thank you for excellent review! I got my copy of this 85mm lens few days ago. I have been having trouble with AF from the beginning. Everything seems to be ok when shooting, AF focus fast and tracks eye very well. However when I look at the pictures at my computer, about 75% of the shots are slightly out of focus. Shots where I used eye-AF, subjects eye is actually out of focus, and the tip of the nose starts to be in focus. This is always the case, lens seems to focus too close to the camera. Strange this is that AF-C seems to be doing better job than AF-S. Also when using DMF and manually correcting focus I'm successfully getting sharp and in focus pictures . No other lens I own does this... Have you stumbled across this kind of problem? I'm suspecting that I have a bad copy of this lens...

    • @PeterLindgren1
      @PeterLindgren1  5 лет назад

      You're welcome!
      I didn't have any issues with focusing not being spot on. I used Eye AF fro all my shots almost and it was dead on.

    • @mujihuz8433
      @mujihuz8433 5 лет назад

      I had the exact same problem and It was really really pissing me off. I returned the lens to the seller and they sent it back to Samyang for diagnosis. I don't care if they send me a good copy or not, I had such a bad experience that I've put enough money aside to exchange this with a GM as soon as it arrives back to the seller.

      I doubt it will outperform the Sony 1.8, so unless you absolutely need the small increase in light, the sony will prove much better. The weight and size, the manual override and dedicated button and being native, it’s a no brainer.

  • @mrwashur1991
    @mrwashur1991 4 года назад

    I just can’t trust samyang to make a focus by wire lens. I barely trust their manual lenses to not fall apart lol. Maybe they are upping their game though. Idk. Sigma used to be terrible, now I’d say they’re number 1 in photography right now. Zeiss is getting a run for their money these days lol.
    Also I love the whole weather sealing games. Like what about the lenses from the 60’s and earlier that are just fine. Also why does it cost companies more to include a couple of o rings that cost a fraction of a penny.

    I really want to like this lens but I can't get over how brown/yellowish everything looks in comparison videos. Similarly, background blur looks comparatively dark and low contrast. Compared to the GM, but also all the other lenses in Dustin Abbott's shootout, I keep seeing: "Super sharp, super CA, affordable, soft but dull and dark bokeh, yellow wash, less contrast in general".

    The only downside is bad AF in video? Everything else like the colours and sharpness is the same in video as well, isn’t it? If so, this is perfect for video too for serious video makers and not youtubers. Because we anyway use Manual focus 95% of the times. So yeah, this lens is insanely good for the price, Legendary Stuff.

    • @PeterLindgren1

      @@ShutterKnack so are most iPhones. I don't subscribe to that particular line of reasoning. An item, especially a lens should stand on its own merits. Samyang would seem better by virtue of price (and associated implications) but I tried both briefly and Viltrox focus is noticeably snappier. Kind of threw a spanner in the works there. AND I can't do a true comparison since I'd have to ship the Viltrox (no local availability).
