Awesome comparison video Pete now I know what 85mm lens to buy for my a7iii 🙌🏼✌🏼😁😎
Thank you for your awesome content keep up the great work ✌🏼 !!! (Hi from Greece )
Thank you! Yeah, the batis is fantastic! Will do my best :D
i know Im kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good place to watch newly released series online ?
@@cyrusemanuel1405hd today bro
Thanks for the review. Even more reason I should keep my Batis. The batis was initially considered a superb lens when it first arrived. Then when sony dropped the GM 1.4, the influencers began to bash the batis in favor of GM. I take the batis on my travels and happy I kept this light weight instead of going for the heavier GM.
On the test did you turn “live mode” off? I heard that when the 85s are stopped down they aren’t open enough to properly use eye af and face af effectively. But with that mode turned off it opens the iris to lock focus. Just checking.
I bought the Zeiss Batis this morning, yes, 5 years after Zeiss launched it. It's still a great lens for Sony full frame cameras and I hope to keep it for a lot of time.
I have been looking for a reason to get this lens and you just gave me a handful of them. Great comparison
Yet again, another review that proves that the Sony 85mm F1.4 GM is probably the most overpriced lens in the Sony lens lineup. Sony should consider decreasing the price, or releasing a revision of the lens.
Yeah, considering the performance it is way too overpriced. They have to drop a V2 of the lens soon enough!
@Chris I think its just how the sony color algorithm is. Was it any better on third party lenses?
@Chris Haha gotcha. Thanks for the reply, Chris. Does this mean that you would recommend a 85mm 1.8 zeiss for sony lenses?
Almost all the GMs are overpriced 😅
@Zeko Reko I have some too... my favorite one is the 135mm 1.8. It is an outstanding lens, but overpriced is subjective to perception. To me $1800 to $2100 that the 135mm prime is worth is definitely not justified, even though it us my mostly used lens. At $2600 the 100-400mm gm too... all those lenses are overpriced to me. The 70-200mm WAS odd too amd it didnt keep up with the A7R4, A9, A1, A92 autofocus. I haven't used the newer version yet, but again $2700 is still a hefty price for lenses that perfom virtually identical to much more less expensive in the competition.
I didn't mean to bash the GM performance... it is just overpriced to me, from my perspective.
The FE has a lot of chromatic aberration! I would definitely go with the Batis! 🤘🏼
Great comparison video! I'm going to hold tight to my Batis 85.
Thanks Orio, yeah it's the best one of the lot for sure!
I would still go for the Sony FE85mm 1.8 because of the size of this thing, its portable and not heavy. It also produces great images, plus the video AF is awesome.
Peter im mainly a car photographer and ive used both for video and photos the 28mm and im very happy with the results for both. Im thinking of a less wider approach with same image quality and yes ive been thinking about the 85 but then heard good things about the 35 too, is the 7mm a big difference or should i go with the 85. Doing close ups, detail and rolling shots mainly
Really good test! It is good to get confirmation that I made a good choice when buyien the Batis.
Thanks man! Yeah, the batis is a freaking awesome lens 👌
I love the 85mm Batis!
Great video! I was surprised that the Samyang outperformed Sony native lenses! I only owned the Samyang 24 f2.8 pancake lense and that was very affordable with good image quality. But does Sigma have no 85mm?
Question: Did you zoom in 1:1 with the Sony 85 1.8 and the Samyang to compare sharpness? I ask because I didn't see it as being sharper.
A great comparison bro❤️
Yes I agree with Rick below. it was somewhat unfair to the GM, being one of the oldest with older, slower focus motors and using the A7RIII with less edge focus points. On my A9 the GM focuses quickly from edge to edge of frame and the EYE-AF doesn't falter. I just came back from a long trip where the GM performed great. But excellent effort here Peter. Full disclosure I own the GM one and love the images I get from it. It could stand a refresh with the latest linear motors like in my 135mmGM. If it gets that and the newer XA lens elements like the 135 GM, 400mm 2.8 GM and 600mm f4 GM, watch out next time you test it. I do love the programmable focus stop button, af/mf switch and declickable aperture on the 85GM, the Batis has none of those features. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Nothing unfair in using the same camera for all tests in my opinion! It sure is due for an upgrade and it would probably need a faster AF motor. The aperture ring and the af mf switch is sure good but has nothing to do with the overall image quality!
Thanks for the comment Gerald!
Your explanations are just incredible, thank you, I needed to see this.
Hi Peter, what do you think about the Viltrox 85mm f1.8?Recommend it?
Thank you
I love your channel bro you have so much good content
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it 😀
Thanks for another great one!
You're welcome!
Good work bro!
Great video! Made my selection much easier.
Glad i could help!
I wish they offered an 85 F1.8 G master. I recently purchased the 24 F1.4 and would love the 24’s aperture ring and weather sealing on an 85 without the weight. The Batis 85 is half the weight of the 85 GM. I’m currently deciding wether to trade the Batis 85 in for an 85FE as other reviews have them optically identical but it also has the extra button for consistency with the 24GM. I wonder if there is more copy variation with the FE and that’s why you are seeing a difference.
The differences are so minor. I went with the Sony 1.8 and couldn't be happier and my wallet was pretty happy too haha! Great comparisons though, this was really useful in helping me decide!
i have the two sony GM AND the f1.8. the budget 85mm is my most used. Fast AF , lightweight , value for money
It sure is better value for the money even though it's a bit soft!
@@PeterLindgren1 lol its anything but soft. Might be (according to you) softER than the others, I have not tested them, but I can most definitely say that the Sony lens is extremely sharp. Been using it for almost a year now, pretty much every day, and it's tack sharp at 1.8. I even do 100-200% crops on 24mpx and still have a darn sharp image.
It's actually the first time i've ever heard of someone saying it's a soft lens, and i've seen plenty of technical reviews and read the DxO charts, which all point to it being very sharp as well as extreme value for money. AF might slack, aberrations may show but being soft? Can't say I (or anyone I've read) agree.
@@Francisco_Otero I tried all the lenses on the Sony A7RIII and this one was the softest wide open compared to the rest, but with that said it's still a really sharp lens as you say!
@@PeterLindgren1 Yep, but you made it sound like it was a soft lens lol can't have that!
Peter Lindgren great video though, loved the swan shot
Wonder how the Batis does against the Sigma ART 85 f/1.4? (obviously released after this vid was made, but still :)
Just got mine in the mail today. Good to know.
The Batis? It's a freaking awesome lens!
I wonder whats your opinion now, considering with the release of new sigma 85 dg dn 1.4? Thinking of buying either the new sigma or batis 85
Perfect comparison video, many thanks. Batis it is 🤗
Bra review Peter. Kul med en göteborgare. Bor i Lerum själv. Står i valet och kvalet att köpa en r7iv med en Tamron 28-75, Sony 200-600 och en Samyang 85mm. Blir nog en bra combo. Har Canon idag men den nya R5 blir för dyr. Följer nu din kanal.
Great comparison thanx for video
Thanks, you're welcome!
thanks for the review.. I was about to buy the samyang but i thought why shouldn't I watch a review before buying it. and found this video
did you do firmware update on Samyang ? After update AF on Samyang should work much faster
How does the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 Lens for Sony E Mount perform in video?
Thanks for the amazing video!
I just got a second hand Batis for ~$600US
When you did the sharpness tests, did you use a tripod or it was hand held? Your results are different from any other sites I have visited. I have the Zeiss Batis 85mm but I don't think it is that sharp of a lens. Do you have RAW files for download?
Tripod all the way!
Since i will not use them for video, can I have problems using them on a a6000 because they don't have OSS?
No, as long as you're shooting with the shutter above 1/250 it probably wont be any issues :)!
Good stuff 👍🏽
Thanks!
Top man thanks. I was a little surprised by the performance of the samyang in video. I thought that it would be better. Can you test the lens with people . This would be interesting.thanks very good job.
You're welcome man! Yeah, the Samyang in video is just weird to be honest. I'm gonna test it in a different setting but it still performs quite badly when i've done my tests.
@@PeterLindgren1 Thanks man 💪
Been using batis since an year on a6500 and presently a7iii , never disappointed, i suggest you review the 18 mm batis too
Batis lenses are great but the 85 is the real performer of them all!
I actually have it on my to do list :D
Batis 18 vs Sony GM 16-35mm pls!
Love your sense of humor 😅
Here's hoping Samyang will address the nervous nature of their AF in future firmware updates. I haven't had the 85 stall, but the twitchy adjustment as it settles is unusable for vids.
Yeah they really need that. They have some great glass but horrible firmware right now.
Whoa, been watching you a few years and just came across this throwback! Haha. Do you still feel the same with the 85mm baits? Strictly for portraits
Love tha batis 🤙🏼
Thank you for your amasing video!!!
Samyang! can you do a review about their 50mm 1.4 AF too?
That would probably be possible, i'll do my best to see if i can get my hands on it!
3:22 the pic is beautiful brother. I loved it
You deserve a lot more than 5k subscribers
Thank you so much!
Five months later he got what you wished for! 150k subs 😮
Can the yellow color be corrected automatic in a Sony a7 iii? Is there any possibility?
The best comparison i have seen ever !! Thanks Pete cheers!!
Awesome!
i like my sony FE 85 :D
next, you should do 35mm ;)
@@najeebbadalandabad8351 I have the 35mm and I'll go with Sony 85mm 1.8 :D Those are my 2-go lenses
A lot of people do and interestingly a lot of people say it is sharper than the batis...
@@SkillzzzSkillzzz yes and unfortunalty i sold that lens for the tamron 70-180 f2.8
please compare the samyang 85 1.4 vs the Sigma Art 85 1.4
Iv just got the zeiss 85mm last week still haven't tryed it in the streets yet can't wait to though
Best video comparison!
Is a7ii proper to using a Gm 85mm / f1.4?
Strange. From the samples ending at 5:05 there is no part in the Batis image that is sharper than the Samyang image. The GM and Samyang look the same (and sharpest) except for the Samyang's lower contrast and yellow wash-out
Just purchased the batis because of this video. Best $1000 spent ever.
Could you review a funky lens?
Tamron 500mm f/8
It’s a mirrored lens, costs like 140 dollars off ebay.
...or the Nikon 50mm f0.95 =D
How about the manual focus performance?
The G-Master has the smoothest autofocus. No breathing. The others are either hesitant or aren't smooth going from A to B. See for yourself 2:34
Did you update the firmware of the samyang to the newly released fw 04 or was it still on fw 03?
It was version 3!
Peter Lindgren thanks, fw04 is a big improvement
Batis & Sony FE seem to jump into focus on the last half second. Sony GM appears to be super smooth throughout entire autofocus.
lol that itch getting more itchy ... time to upgrade my fe85-1.8 ... great effort on video
Which one do you wanna buy :D? Thanks man!
@@PeterLindgren1 either of the two, batis or gm. i need to sleep on it and wake up, rethink life. lol
@@rykhen1459 I say if you're gonna upgrade from the FE 1.8 then go for the GM. It's build quality is just amazing!
hahaha my GM is here. wow love the image char it produce. well im a still shooter, so no regrets worth every penny, thanks alot for the review sir.
Amazing Samyang, reasonable it is.
So the Samyang 85 video performance is poor... I wonder if upgrading the lens firmware via their lens usb docking will increase the video AF performance? Can you confirm about this? (I still use FE 85, but thinking about Samyang 85, 60% photo, 40% video usage)
Ngurah Juniar Dustin Abbott has a thorough test of these lenses on his channel.. the results differ from this “test”..
What about the Viltrox 85mm 1.8?!?! I guess this video was made before it released.
Finally a good video on the important 85mm lenses that exist
Which one are you buying?
The zeiss batis
Thanks man, glad you liked the vid!
Having owned the samyang for a month nearly and had some use with it, it's a awesome lens for the money. Currently £539 NEW, making it the cheapest lens of the four you have reviewed. But I will say you have missed the sigma 85mm lens from your review, I hear its a good lens.
My Samyang RF 85 f1.4 autofocus is fantastic for video in my experience
what was the firmware version of the samyang ?
Thank you!
Man I love the Batis I just need to save up for one 🤣. Love the review I was mind blown by image quality difference to be honest ... The regular 85 is noway near rest
The Batis 85 is a pure powerhouse, no wonder you loved it when I was visiting! Thanks man 🙌
@@PeterLindgren1 The Batis lenses are under-rated because people thinks they're too expensive... but as you have seen, there is a reason behind the price of the Batis. And also behind the lower price of the Sony 1.8.
@@oriomenoni7651 Check the DxO ratings:

@@Francisco_Otero Hmm I can't find anything in those ratings about DoF transition quality, contrast, color profile, out of focus characteristics, rendering style, etc. You know, all those properties that are important to a great photo .. It does test sharpness; the result contradicts every comparison video I've seen, where the batis just edges out the sony. Haven't seen any pictures showing the opposite. Not that it matters to me - both are fantastically sharp. I'd take the Batis for how it renders. And I'd put the Samyang last for that reason, no matter how sharp it is.
@@tfm2934 There are tastes for everyone! I have shot tens of thousands of payed images and the results from my Sony have been outstanding. The scientific results from DxO mark show that the Sony is sharper at rendering, clear as day. This aligns to what I've seen on pretty much every review out there (at least until 2018, which was when I got the lens, so I find it weird that you say it doesn't!). A great photo has little to do with many of the things you said though, most of it is made by the subject, the setting, the lighting and the timing; all of them available on both lenses.
However, that may or may not impact your workflow. I shoot on an A7RII, which squeezes the lens to it's theoretical maximum of 40 mpx and I can tell you, I've cropped in tight many times and have been glad the images were rendered so perfectly.
looks like batis win the game! Great comparison man!
It is! Thank you!
would be cool to see how the tokina that just came out compares
i imagine the eye af on the m3 would be awesome, 7r3 never renowned for its eye af to begin with
Agree. The rokinon 85 1.4 is the best 85 ever made!
It's a really good one 👌
great test Peter...I might sell my Sony FE 85mm & get the Samyang as video is not something i do ..
Oh you definitely should man! It's a beauty!
@@PeterLindgren1 the weight puts me off a little though... but at F1.4 or 1.8 the samyang looks beautiful
@@GilbertTV Due to it's size, it really doesn't seem much heavier, and balances really well with a grip. But, then again - it's HUGE. Well, fat, anyways.
So disappointing that the Capture One still doesn't provide lens profiles for any Samyangs =/
Is the samyang good for video ?
I have a bunch of Canon L glass, and the FE 85mm is by far the sharpest lens on my A7Riii. And now you tell me there is a sharper/cheaper lens available?
Haha well... Yeah!
Not cheaper.
Have you noticed if the AF accuracy of Samyang was on part with GM? I own a GM, but it is very heavy and noisy.
It most certainly is, all my tests it outperformed the GM lens in photo mode.
Sharpness isn't equivalent to being the best lense. For most people posting on instagram or web, you cannot tell the difference anyway. Just buy the lens, you are comfortable paying for
great video
i will trust in you... I will get a Batis 85
soon as possible
You will not be disappointed!!!! Not only have better IQ, AF it also have stabilization and its more flare resistance than the others. Don't forget the Zeiss 3d pop you get in your images!!!
Great video as always Pete, only comment I would have maybe if you could say prices for each lens it will show price/quality which one is best 😁👍👍
Thanks DAvid!
Yeah, might include that in a future video, but since the price differs so much from country to country i didn't include it.
at the 0:40 it jump between eye and face focus is because you move the face out of the center where there is phase detect focus points. phase detect focus points. only cover 67% the sensor in the center of a7riii
Any recommendations on batteries for A7ii? Battery life really sucks!
Unfortunately not, but i do know that the battery time sucks =(
Thoughts on 85mm viltrox
English is not my mothertongue, so every time you say Zeiss Batis I understand Zeiss badass😂
There is now available Viltrox AF 85mm F1.8 STM for Sony, it´s little sharper in the middle of image than Sony FE 85mm F1.8, it also costs only 300 euro, it is a very good performer.
Might have to check it out!
The samyang seems fast but did you really take photos and compared? I have had already 4 copies of the samyang and 60% of my pictures are slightly out of focus. The focus accuracy is really horrible.
It is fast! Yeah, had no issues with missed focus or something similar except for video!
Yes samyang is slow. When I shoot portraits vertical and tried to fill the frame at f1.4 . The eye AF showed while taking the picture, but when I reviewed the picture the eyes were looking soft. Not once but couple of them.
Recently, i shot a cinematic car video with this lens.. Guys this lens is just 🔥
I love my Batis 85mm
Same here, it's amazing!
Batis it is👍
You will be so satisfied!
Well, which lens did you shoot the swan with?
Batis 85 :D
I guessed right! There is something with zeiss glass I really can't explain... How do they do that!?
@@meriredetripsandclicks3153 They focus on rendering instead of on gaming DXO with sharpness and overcorrectedness. They design for photos, not for metrics. They have the luxury of relying on their reputation to be able to take the artistic freedom they believe in. The box in which the lens comes says: "This is the moment we work for".
what about the sigma art 1.4 85mm
What about sigma 85 art?
Thanks - but what about the Canon 85mm 1.2??
@Zeko Reko damn son
Did you really laugh out loud at that
You have an interesting sense of humour :)
There's a thing called an adaptor. Lots of us professional shooters use them. Many many people use Canon lenses on Sony. And I would bet money that many people watching this video are interested in how a Canon 85mm would compare to these lenses.
Sony 85mm 1.8 it's good for video?
It works well, yes!
Sigma 56 1.4 for apsc shooters
Haven't tried it but would be awesome to test!
I’ll take the 85mm otus 😁
what about the old sigma 85mm 1.4 ??
