I own this lens and used it a lot shooting weddings. The review is spot on. Chromatic aberration is the biggest flaw of this lens. Don't use it outside or in back-lit situations wide open. Obviously focusing on a manual lens wide open will not be easy either with moving objects or still. Build quality is great and price is great. Got mine for $177. It is a good low light tool.
Nice review on explaining how a 85mm lens with AF focus differ from the 85mm lens with manual focus...Honest review without prejudice towards either brands...
The extension on the bottom of the lens is for the correct flange focal distance from the sensor to allow proper infinity focus. Primarily designed as a DSLR lens and not a mirrorless E-mount lens to start out with.
This brand confusion has to do with a little known investment company who owns the rights to several brands, their idea is to buy well known brand names or names that sounds like something expensive or well known, the name of the company is Elite Brands Inc. They own the rights for other brands like Rokkor, Minolta, Bell & Howell and they have also signed the rights to sell Samyang's products to the Americas. Elite Brands Inc don't have any production facilities or research laboratories, it's just about owning the brand and then subcontract a company like Samyang to make their "Rokinon" or "Xeen" lenses, or another company for their cameras and other products. This is just like Gillette razors, Duracell batteries or Braun shavers, they are all just brands owned by an investment company who then buys in the stuff, slaps the branding on them and sells it as people are willing to pay more for top brands, it used to be Proctor & Gamble who bought Gillette, the parent company that owned the brands Duracell and Braun, now Berkshire Hathaway owns at least Duracell. So forget all the brand mumbo jumbo when it comes to batteries and razors.
You mention near the end of the video about how the Sony 85mm you just pick it up and click because of how fast the AF is. It got me thinking, could you make a video about the settings you use for your a6000?
Just ordered this as a starter.. once I have extra money I will upgrade. Thank for the review. I think your the only one with a review on this particular lens
Wow !! Finally you've reviewed this lens. But I've already bought this lens with Sony A6000, as the Sony 85mm f1.8 is way expensive here in India @$660. And yes chromatic aberration is a huge issue on this lens at f/1.4 and sometimes focusing also as in case of non-still subject. Otherwise I love this lens for extremely beautiful and creamy bokeh, nice subject pop up from background giving some kind of 3D effect.

From what I heard the Mitakon 85mm f1.2 is superb. It’s manual, it’s slightly more expensive and even better than the sel85f18. A side by side comparison with both at 1.8 would have be interesting.
Congratulations on this and all the reviews, you are one of the best resources to deepen and spend money wisely! What do you think about a review of the new Samyang / Rokinon 24mm f 2.8 AF? I'm waiting to decide as an alternative to the Zonlai 22mm F 1.8 Thanks so much Francesco
I feel like some of the issues come from the adapter they have on there, I have your #1 manual lens (rokinon 21mm) and it never suffers from any of those downfalls exept from the experience you need handling manual lenses.. i'm getting there... I think your your outcome was good.. after using all manual lenses vs fast autofocus lenses deff believe there is a time and place for both.
Yeah, especially the chromatic aberration. That isn't an issue in other situations. In his case, it's likely the adapter and less likely, the lens' reaction with his specific camera.
If you're into shooting video with manual focus, this lens RIPS for video like the G master F1.4 without the auto focus. I'm sure you can get auto focus with this lens now with the right adapter that will AF any manual lens, and THAT is cool! Don't have one, but I've heard all about it. On an a6500, it's awesome!
Rokinon and Samyang are the same company. The company uses differences names for different countries. Something similar not very long ago was happening with Minolta cameras. Minolta digital cameras were named Maxxum in America, Dynax in Europe and α (Alpha) in Asia. All of them were a-mount. After the purchase of Minolta by Sony the α (Alpha) name passed to the digital Sony cameras. Actually Minolta had very innovative α7 and α9 SLR film cameras. The legacy passed to Sony α7 and α9 full frame cameras. I bet that many of Minolta scientists during the purchase of Minolta-Konica by Sony in 2006 still work and develop the Sony mirrorless cameras. I am not very sure but I think that Meike and Neewer lenses are made from the same company.
I take it this is the exact same lens they make for SLRs, which have a far greater flange distance due to the mirror, hence this version for Sony has an inbuilt adapter the size of an SLR mirrorbox and becomes front heavy. I bought a Canon version a while back 2ndhand on eBay for aus$160, but didn’t really take to it until I got my Fuji X-T20 due to manual focusing on an SKR being a pain and slow without focus peaking. Now it is actually useful, and produce great results, even if it is slower to manual focus than if you have AF, and you’re more prone to mis focus if you’re not careful. But I love it with focus peaking on mirrorless. They’ve recently released an f1.8 version designed specifically for mirrorless APS-C, and hence considerably smaller without the large empty space at the back, and presumably better balanced as a result.
bought this thing back in 2011 for about 450 dollars! I still use it!it was mounted on a crappy D3100 that I gave away!putting this on a D800 and now a D750 is still great though I prefer it at aperture 2!
I have this lens on my Nikon DSLR and it's shorter and at 1.4 CA is well controlled. I think they just inserted that mirrorless adaptor to make it fit on Sony cameras. That causes more CA and makes the lens longer. Besides the Nikon version has some sort of chip that makes your camera beep o indicate when the subject in focus.
I have the same setup and I love the camera and the lens. It took a while for me to adjust from af to mf but once I got the hang of it I couldn't let it go. the picture quality is amazing I was able to get the lens for 150.
This lens is a fairly old design of theirs now, 5-6 years old maybe. I think the 85mm af is updated, and the 85mm cine ds has a new coating. Any possibility you can get your hands on those for review? I recently saw someone comment the picture quality improved in the newer design. The cine ds version is close to the same price. 400 USD, I believe.
My favourite Samyang lenses are the Samyang 8mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC II Fisheye for APS-C and the Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 FE for full frame. Very affordable, tiny, and great image quality. Definitely check them out if you can.
just bought the 85 1.8 for my mft system, just came out and looked more pleasant to me than this version, also in sharpness, by the portraits, of course it's easy to miss sharpness at 1.4. Especially the chromatic aberration was a lot at 1.4. but still a decent performance overal for that price!
Your videos are always top notch. You mentioned the Sony 85 1.8 being much sharper and I know you've done shooting with the a6500 and a7iii. Do you notice a huge difference in image quality across the board from the a6500 to a7iii with the 85? I can shoot adapted to my a6000 with my Nikon mount Sigma 85 Art but only manually and can't adjust the f stop. I'd like to get the Sony 85 but only with the premium body. Your thoughts? Thanks.
GRJCLyon The sensor on the a7iii is significantly better than the a6500 sensor. Honestly the full frame kit lens looks sharper than most prime lenses on the a6500. So yes, the 85mm will look much, much better on the a7iii.
Thx for the video. The Samyang was my first portrait lense paired with the a6000 and I really like it. I bought the Sony as well and it’s so much better because of the AF. For some reason the Samyang works better on the a6000 than on my a7iii. Anyways it’s a great lense to start with.
I returned mine for Panasonic G85 MFT mount. Was very hard to focus. Can really be used for portraits only. Focus picking did not work well on my camera
I recommend everyone to get the Canon EF version and get a Viltrox EF-E II Speedbooster to go with it. By that way, you can bypass the crop factor of Sony APS-C camera and unlock the full potential of the lens. and trust me, it's awesome! And please ignore the comment if you have Sony Fullframe cameras.
Is this good for vlogging? I’m doing gym videos but working on doing daily vlogs. I have a small 2.8-16 lense currently . I clog with it but I’d like to be able to zoom in and still have great quality . I pretty much have to have someone old for he camera or set it ima tripod

Thanks for reviewing this lens! The only thing I didnt like about the lens was the chromatic aberrations (thank God for lightroom). I'm sure on a full frame a7 series camera it would be much more toned down due to it being a full frame lens but all in all I'm happy with the apsc performance for the amazing price.
Focus peaking makes focusing with this lens so much easier and personally I think it's for FF primarily, where any CA is minimal. It's a great lens.
The legendary camera Sony A6000, i wonder how many times you mount-unmount your lens on this camera.
Did u used this lens in a6000?

Samyang is Rokinon, Rokinon is Samyang 😂. Samyang is the real company name actually.
I think they tried to rebrand their name to make foreign market more approachable but it ended up confusing everyone lool
@@kevinsong2038 Rokinon is for US market. Samyang is for Asian market. A very bad marketing strategy.
